Francisco Liriano is now 3-0 with a 0.56 ERA in 3 starts. He likely wouldn't have pitched past the 6th anyway (still on a pitch count), but a bunk call accounted for the only hit he gave up.

Does anyone have him on their fantasy team?

Maybe this was discussed elsewhere, but in case it wasn't: Royals fans rejoice!

Allard Baird Fired

For the click-lazy:

Royals name Moore new GM
Baird dismissed; Jackson interim GM until after draft
By Dick Kaegel / MLB.com

OAKLAND -- After weeks of speculation, the Royals replaced general manager Allard Baird with Dayton Moore of the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.

Baird, the team's general manager since 2000, was dismissed with the Royals holding the worst record in the Majors at 13-37.

Moore, 39, becomes the sixth general manager in franchise history. Neither Moore nor the Royals would reveal the length or details of his contract.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to be going to Kansas City," Moore said. "Kansas City has great tradition and a great fan base. It has ownership that I believe is 100 percent committed to winning. But the most important aspect is the atmosphere it provides to raise a family. For me to grow in baseball and my family to grow and mature, it provides the perfect opportunity."

In Atlanta, MLB.com asked Moore why he took the Kansas City job when other opportunities might have become available.

"There are only 30 of these jobs. You can't pick and choose. You have to be willing to take some risks and accept some challenges. I want to go there, reach my ceiling and meet the next challenge," Moore said.

"I was still undecided Monday as I was going to the ballpark. It just hit me when I pulled into the parking lot that 'this is why we do this.'"

Moore was introduced to Kansas City reporters in a conference call on Wednesday afternoon.

"If I didn't think there was a chance to win a championship in Kansas City, I wouldn't commit myself or my family to this," he said.

Currently assistant general manager of baseball operations to Atlanta's John Schuerholz, Moore has been with the Braves since 1994. Schuerholz was one of his predecessors in the Royals job from 1981 to 1990.

"We are fortunate to attract one of the brightest young minds in baseball," Royals president Dan Glass said. "Dayton comes from a winning tradition and brings tremendous experience in all aspects of baseball operations."

The Royals announced that vice president of baseball operations Muzzy Jackson would serve as interim GM until Moore takes over after next week's First-Year Player Draft.

Moore has Midwest roots -- he was born in Wichita, Kan., and is a former resident of Garden City, Kan. He lives with his wife Marianne and their three children in Duluth, Ga.

For the Braves, Moore was responsible for overseeing all aspects of scouting and player development. He has been the club's director of international scouting and director of player personnel during his career.

He's also been associated with some current Royals front-office employees, including Deric Ladnier, senior director of scouting; Brian Murphy, assistant to the general manager; Jin Wong, director of baseball operations; and Linda Smith, manager of scouting operations.

Moore is a graduate of George Mason University, where he served as assistant baseball coach from 1990 to 1994.

Baird, 44, took over the Royals' GM job on June 17, 2000, succeeding Herk Robinson. A long-time scout, Baird was instrumental in expanding the team's worldwide presence.

However, the Royals' top finish in the Baird era was third place in 2003. After that, the club lost 104 games in 2004 and a record 106 last season.

"The only thing I have to say is I have the ultimate respect for everybody in the organization," Baird said. "I want the best for the Kansas City Royals and for Kansas City."

Baird said he planned to take some unscheduled down time.

"I really don't know what I'm going to do now," he said. "Baseball has been my life. This is the first time I'm not going to be on the field at this time of the year since I was 5."

Baird was in the last year of a two-year contract extension that he signed after the successful 2003 season. He has been associated with the Royals for 18 years.

"We are grateful for Allard's long and loyal service to the Kansas City Royals," Glass said. "He has always acted with integrity and the organization's best interest at heart. We will miss Allard and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors."

Players held Baird in high regard.

"I feel bad for Allard," said pitcher Scott Elarton, whom Baird signed in the offseason. "We should have not been this way. We got off to a bad start, and it was basically our fault that he got fired. Everybody feels bad."

"He was very approachable, a good communicator -- things it's kind of hard to find in a general manager," Elarton said. "He'll be missed, but that's baseball, and I'm sure he'll tell you that himself."

Catcher John Buck, obtained by Baird in the Carlos Beltran trade, said he was shocked by the move.

"Something that everybody respected with Allard is that he was always up-front and honest with the players," Buck said. "What a good general manager he was -- it's kind of tough to see him go."

First baseman Matt Stairs said he was disappointed by Baird's departure.

"I've been here three years now. He brought me here. It's not just a baseball relationship but a friends' relationship," Stairs said. "Not only was he a good general manager but he turned out to be a very good friend."

Good for the Royals. First question though - will Moore be given the OK to draft Andrew Miller regardless of cost?

He's not taking over in the draft - conflict of interest with the Braves and what not. On the other hand, I think an arguement could be made that you take Linecum (who has better numbers) and pay $3.5M (as opposed to $5M that Miller would cost) and spend the $1.5M on another prospect who might be a hard sign - Miller's reported to be good, but I don't know how big the gap between him and Linecum really is.

Hmmm, I would think he'd at least want some input on the top choice. Most reports I've seen have Miller as the top talent with Brad Lincoln usually pegged as a close #2, with Lincecum and guys like Brandon Morrow and Max Scherzer (and now Luke Hochevar now that the Dodgers failed to sign him) following.

As for Lincecum, he's an interesting call - he's got wicked stuff (upper 90's heater, hard curve) and misses bats like few others (199K in 125.1 IP this year, 491K in 342 IP career). On the other hand, his control is a significant issue (63 BB this year, 216 for his career) and his mechanics are somewhat unusual (see video here. He's also been used pretty heavily by the UW, with frequent high pitch counts (I've seen actual tallies as high as 143 and estimated tallies as much as 165, and he's been identified as the #5 most abused pitcher in college in 2005 by this website.

I'm not sure what to think about him - if he's available when the M's pick at #5 there will certainly be some added pressure to take the local kid, but I'm scared by his walk totals and high pitch counts.

Ok, I take back what I said about Chan Ho Park. He can pitch (6 innings tonight, 5 hits, 0 er, 8k) and hit (3 for 3 at the plate).

Zambrano has his no-hit bid ended in the 8th.

Amazing that he got through 7 1/3 playing a game in the Houston band box.

Corey Patterson stole a base tonight, making that 9 games in a row with a steal. The MLB record is 12. He leads the majors with 26. Thanks Cubbies!

Of the 2 guys that were traded for Patterson (Nate Spears & Carlos Perez), one has a .221 AVG and one has a 6.67 ERA, both for the Daytona Cubs.

By the time he was traded, the Cubs would have settled for Patterson merely putting the ball in play.

I got a last minute (and free) ticket to the Lexington Legends game tonight. Pretty fun time. I left after the 4th inning, of course. The HR Clemens gave up was an absolute bomb. We were all jokin that the kid was going to go straight into the clubhouse and retire, cuz it ain't gettin' any better than that for him in his career. And to top it off, it was $.25 hotdog night. Can't beat that!

Apparently last year they were nickel hotdogs, but this year they raised it to $.25. Every Tuesday. Just happened to fall on the night Clemens pitches. The people working the hotdog stand looked less than thrilled.

Back in the day they used to have nickle beer nights at the El Paso Diablos games, but one time they ran out of beer and there was a drunken riot in the stands and that was the end of that...

Cole Hamels looks good in 5 1/3. If he is as good as advertised (and stays healthy), the Fightin's should at least be competitive with the Mets throughout the year (3.5 games out now)

From the low expectations dept......

I gotta give some credit to the Marlins whenever I can. They have won six in a row and 16 of their last 22 going into tonight's game. They are only 4 1/2 out of second place in the division.

Hey a guy has to take his baseball happiness anyway he can get it when he is a Marlins fan

So John Smoltz says he would accept a trade if "it's best for the team."

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2493341

I gotta say though, as a Met fan, the only reason I really posted this is for this quote from the article:

Quote:
Those questions have extended all the way to the kids in Smoltz's annual baseball camp this week. Smoltz said one camper asked him Tuesday morning if the Braves were mathematically eliminated from the playoff chase.

Watching baseball tonight and i just found it hilarious, im pretty sure it was Lee out in LF during the Brewers, Tigers game and they showed the HRs the Tigers hit out to left and as they show the ball leaving the park you see the LF not move an inch on all 3 or 4 of them, just turns around and watches where its gonna land. Not sure why, just found that hilarious.

DETROIT -- St. Louis Cardinals left-hander Mark Mulder has rotator cuff inflammation and irritation in his left shoulder, an MRI revealed.

The Cardinals plan to re-examine Mulder's shoulder in about a week, and haven't set a timetable on his return. Mulder was supposed to start Sunday, but Sidney Ponson took his spot in the rotation against the Tigers.

Mulder was put on the 15-day disabled list Thursday because of a shoulder strain after giving up nine runs in 2 1/3 innings against the Chicago White Sox.

"When you throw that bull I was throwing up there, it's not going to get it done," Mulder said after the poor outing.

Mulder is 6-5 this season -- after starting 5-1 -- with a 6.09 ERA. He was 16-8 last season, his first in St. Louis after pitching five seasons for Oakland. The 28-year-old Mulder has a career record of 103-55 with a 4.03 ERA.

I suppose this comes from the medical journal "duh" for anyone who has seen him pitch the last few outings. Sure, he's not as good as his reputation as being on of the "big three" from Oakland but he's not nearly as bad as he had been so something had to be up.

Dodgers acquire Hendrickson, Hall from Devil Rays

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- With an eye toward the future, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays traded pitcher Mark Hendrickson, catcher Toby Hall and $1 million to the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday for pitcher Jae Seo, catcher Dioner Navarro and a player to be named.

The Dodgers were leading the NL West by a half-game over San Diego when they made the deal.

"Mark will add some depth to our starting rotation as we head into the second half of the season," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti. "Toby is an experienced catcher who will serve us well both behind the plate and off the bench."

Hendrickson was 4-8 with a 3.81 ERA in 13 starts this season. The former NBA player held opponents to a .241 batting average.

The 32-year-old lefty led the Devil Rays in wins the last two years.

"He's continually gotten better and we think he'll keep getting better and better," Dodgers manager Grady Little said before Tuesday night's game at Minnesota.

Hendrickson was expected to start Saturday in Anaheim against the Angels. He had been mentioned a lot in recent trade speculation.

"There was obviously interest, deservedly so," Devil Rays executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. "I tip my hat to Ned. He made a bold move early."

The 30-year-old Hall hit .231 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs for the last-place Devil Rays. He has thrown out 35 percent of would-be basestealers in his career.

The deal makes one of the youngest teams in the majors even more youthful with the 22-year-old, switch-hitting Navarro set to replace Hall in Tampa Bay's everyday lineup.

Navarro was the Dodgers' opening day catcher and batted .280 with two homers and eight RBIs in 25 games before going on the 15-day list with a bruised right wrist on May 5. He was activated from the disabled list on June 16 and optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas, where he hit .175 in 11 games.

"The Dodgers did pretty good on this one and so did the Rays," Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "We've had our eyes on [Navarro] for a while. I've heard a whole lot of good things about him."

A former Yankees prospect who made his big league debut with New York in 2004, Navarro has appeared in 70 games in the majors. He is a Tampa resident.

Seo was 2-4 with a 5.78 ERA in 19 appearances, including 10 starts, for the Dodgers this season. He was traded by the New York Mets to Los Angeles in the offseason.

The 29-year-old righty made his major league debut in 2002 and was 8-2 with a 2.59 ERA for the Mets last season. In 90 career appearances, including 76 starts, he is 24-28 with a 4.13 ERA.

Seo is expected to start Sunday at Washington.

"We're excited about what these players can bring to us this year and the future years," Friedman said.

Being in this area, I get a lot of Rays coverage. They seemed to have gotten shortchanged in this deal. I had been hearing that they were looking at getting two propects for each of these players.

I dunno about 2 prospects for each, but 2 prospects would have been nice. Seo is old enough to not even be a prospect

I swear if the Reds consider themselves to be actual contenders this season they have got to do something about this bullpen. They battle back to tie the game Vs the Royals and then the bullpen turns around and blows it again.

That was only the 4th HR the Reds gave up today too. Eric Milton scares me just as much as the bullpen

Don't know what's funnier, this or the "intentional walk" that turned into what proved to be a game winning single earlier this week

Pedro makes his return to Boston tonight vs Beckett. Should make for a good game.

Coco Crisp just made one of the best catches I've ever seen. That might well be the best catch of a line drive that deep in the OF that I've seen. That ball was still stinging as it reached him. I thought it was going to rip his glove off. Wow!

I'll follow-up that last post with this one...

Did anyone see Gary Matthews robbing Mike Lamb of a HR yesterday? I don't even want to give away details for fear of ruining how great it was.

6 White Sox All-Stars. 2 Detroit Tiger All-Stars.

Fuck you Ozzie Guillen. Fuck you. You and you alone, have forced me to despise the White Sox. I hope that team goes down in flames.
