Aristotle and Elvin are both great picks, though I think of Aristotle more as an intellectual. I had Elvis right after Beethoven.

4.10 Pablo Picasso (Pre WWII) - Artist
I don't get why so many people love his work, but they do. I chose the era that spans most of his life. I considered taking him over Homer so I am quite happy he was still available here. |

He could well be used as an intelletual as well, but I already had someone in that slot =) And with all the things he wrote he fits the scribe category quite well also. The wiki info says that only about a 1/3 of his actual writings are still in existance. So sad to lose so much knowledge. |

I realized I typed Elvin. Elvin from Elvin at the Chipmunks wouldn't be a bad pick either.

Barkeep's pick:
4.12 Theodore Roosevelt - Diplomat/Ruler (Pre WWII) The only sitting President to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Roosevelt exemplifies the American Spirit. Having been a boxer, hunter, soldier, and crusader, he also made a pretty good President. His policy on foreign affairs (Speak softly and carry a big stick) and domestic affairs (his reformist attitude particularly against the trusts) resonates in both political parties to this day. His second pick has been taken (Elvis), and he didn't send me any backups, so I can't post his pick for 5.1... |

Don't know if this will work but can we establish a rule that we cannot vote for ourselves? I think doing so is cheesy and classless, and I would be more interested in what those of us here think of the other picks.

Nice catch. I was thinking how ironic it was that he was more iconic after his death. Very nice catch. My mind is uncontrollable at times.

I don't know if this has already been addressed, but I want to confirm the category here. You have combined two categories here (Military Leader and Ruler/Diplomat). For now, I am going with Military Leader.

Yes, that's up to you. Your goal is your own. The stated goal is to produce the "best" list (no standards really set to define "best"), which will be voted on after the draft is completed. So if your goal is to win the vote, then you might steer your picks toward that. But what your aim is here is up to you.

While I agree with the perception of a Middle Ages bend for her, you are correct that she lived in the Renaissance period as I have set it out. The Renaissance was already beginning to bloom in Italy in the early 15th century, but France and England were too busy fighting a century long war to notice. I actually think this is one of those picks where you could have gone either way and not have been too penalized for it by voters, but we'll see.

I always laugh thinking about Oprah because there is a morning radio show here in LA (Kevin & Bean on KROQ) that professes that Oprah rules the world, because if she came on her show and told all the women of the world to kill their men, they would do it without hesitation.

Hey everyone, by and large we have made good progress today, and can still make even more tonight. That said, I think today also illustrates why lists are important--particularly lengthy lists. I mentioned lists being just enough for your picks as a problem last night after we got stalled with Noop's pick. So we get here today and Noop was saying at one point that he was sending in just enough picks for his turn (he was here to make his picks fortunately), and Barkeep did the same thing. We have to wait essentially because of short lists. So I'll emphasize again that it would really help us along if everyone sends in longer lists. Not just enough to cover your picks. Think at least three or four times as long. Unless you are literally one spot away from drafting, your list should be at least five names long. Maybe even longer if you're way down on the other end of the draft.
So if we could keep that in mind in the future, I think we would all be very appreciative of that. Other than that, no quibbles and some excellent picks. I am looking forward to seeing how the rest of this plays out.

Kinda wish I got involved in this one, but it's fun reading along anyway.
I do have an idea for what the next draft could be, though I'd probably need help managing it as I try to stay off these boards during the daytime hours (except over lunch) while at work. I searched around and while there was a sports greats draft some time back, this new draft would be completely different in nature from that one. If I can get some strikes of interest, I'll set up a new thread, but I'll delay the start of the draft until after this one is done. |

With pick 5.1 I'm choosing
Nelson Mandela - Historical Good (1980s & 1990s) Much like the a couple of the previous picks in this category (King & Ghandi) Mandela fought relentlessly for the rights of his people against an oppressive force. After being jailed for his views Mandela was released and helped with the surprisingly peaceful transition from apartheid to majority black rule. |
