Final Four

Utah State beat Lafayette for the NIT Title.

The Match Ups

#3 Sacramento State vs. #2 Arkansas State
#3 Duquesne vs. #1 Xavier

In game 1, Arkansas State used a swarming defense to force 21 turnovers, and also used Freshman SG Ross Noonan, ranked #97 overall in 1952. Noonan scored 22 points to lead the team and the defense did the rest of the work in an easy 68-55 victory.

In game 2, Duquesne got a team high 14 points from Junior SF Caleb Gonzalez. Caleb was ranked #286 overall in 1951. Xavier got a game high 16 points from their Senior PG Nestor Marx. Marx was ranked #86 overall in 1949. Senior PF Richard Adams, ranked #30 overall in 1949 also added 10 points and Xavier had just enough to get by and take this one 62-58.

In the finals, it was Xavier from start to finish. They had a monster performance from Junior Center Melvin Davis, ranked #86 overall in 1950. Davis will return next year to defend the title too. He scored a game high 24 points today. PF Richard Adams was co-MVP with his 14 points and 11 rebounds. Xavier rolled, 74-55 to claim their first ever National Title!

A lot of pressure will be on my guys this year as I receive the following from my AD:

Code:
Arizona Athletic Director Notes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Current Goal: Finish with atleast a .500 conference record. Job Evaluation: The board of trustees is concerned with your performance. If it doesn't improve, your job may be in jeopardy. Budget Data: Total Budget: $247,500 Staff Salaries: $157,689 Season Recruiting Budget: $97,311 Monthly Recruiting Budget: $9,731 Training Facilities: Current Rating: 25 Conference Rank: 6

I better finish with at least a 500 record this year, or it just might be my last.

No changes with my coaching staff again this year.

Scheduling. No change to my scheduling. All easy teams this year.

Recruiting

This year we have 2 scholarships to give out. We don’t have any real position needs for next year, so we will try and get the best 2 players we possibly can.

At the early signing period, the results were not good at all. The two guys we are after never took to our pitch. One of them already signed somewhere else, and the other is still not very interested. We will have to turn our sights to a couple of new guys now.

Arizona Roster

Centers

23 Lon Williams C Sr 6'10" 239 Westminster, CA

We played great last year after Lon joined the starting 5, so we go with him again at the PF spot.

1 Alfonzo Baptiste C So 6'11" 224 Newman, CA

Baptiste retains his starting Center position this year.

15 John Lindsey C Fr 6'10" 207 Lac St. Pierre, Canada

John is buried in the depth chart and will see little to no playing time.

Power Forwards

50 Andrew Amaral PF Jr 6' 9" 233 Lake Havasu City, AZ

Amaral will be the secondguy off the bench when it comes to backing up both of the post positions. He is solid on the boards and has a nice offensive game, but his defense is not all that great.

54 Joaquin Andres PF So 6' 6" 251 Silver City, NM

Andres is the main backup for both post positions this year. Terrific defender and rebounded, he almost got the start, but will see decent time off the bench instead.

Small Forwards

5 Robert Valliere SF Sr 6' 8" 231 Vernal, UT

Valliere will once again start at the SF spot. This will be his third year as the starter and what we need the most is more consistency from game to game from him.

43 Jarrett Corley SF Jr 6' 7" 255 Kelseyville, CA

Corley will be the backup at the SF spot. Valliere will play a lot of minutes, so Corley’s time will be somewhat limited.

2 Steven Gallaway SF So 6' 7" 244 Tillsonburg, Canada

Gallaway will backup both the SF and SG spots this year, but is still a bit down the bench when it comes to depth.

Shooting Guards

45 Charles Shelly SG Fr 6' 3" 198 Canby, OR

Shelly is our best pure shooter so he gets the start at SG this year. His defense is not at all what I desire, but we truly don’t have any other reasonable options.

20 Alex Quach SG Fr 6' 2" 175 Eagar, AZ

Alex gets a red shirt this year.

Point Guards

32 César Moreno PG So 6' 3" 218 Gandia, Spain

Cesar will be the backup at the SG and PG positions. He is not really terrible at anything, but does not really excel at anything either. Pretty much a role player type of guy.

35 Paul Lin PG Fr 5' 6" 187 Las Vegas, NV

Lin is buried in the depth chart this year, but his time will come in a year or two I think.

12 Tony Alcantar PG Fr 6' 1" 182 Cambria, CA

Tony gets the start thanks to one reason…his sensational defensive ratings. Lin and Moreno might not be all that much worse overall, but Tony’s defense gets him the start as a true freshman.

We will run a balanced offense once again, with Baptiste and Shelly will be our go to guys on offense. We will try to play at an average pace to start out the season. As always, we will run a man to man defense, only double teaming on the outside when Shelly gets in trouble. Very little pressing and trapping.

I don’t have high hopes for this team. We need to finish 500 in conference play, and in order to do that, our defense has to be one of the best. I don’t know if we have the talent to do that though.

Still no recruits for us this year. We are targeting a PG and a PF, but to be honest, I am not terribly excited about either one of them.

We keep our perfect record in tact with a 81-67 road win today. Valliere and Baptiste have really stepped up and took the lead on offense this year. Valliere had 20 and Baptiste had 18. As a team we are playing terrific defense and have been ranked in the top 20 in that category.

As odd as it was that we were ranked as high as #18 in the country, we are now not ranked at all, and not even receiving any votes. We never even lost a game!

Our perfect record is finally marred by an ugly road loss in conference, 62-42. Baptiste scored 10 points while Valliere and Williams scored 9 each. That was all the offense we had basically. The defense played fine, but 42 points won’t win any games.

Arizona (14-1) at Arizona State (6-9)

The Sun Devils return the favor and hand us our second loss in convincing fashion, 83-58. Where the heck did the defense go today? Valliere had 17 points and Shelly added 10. Moreno was injured in this game and will miss 3 weeks. Lindsey was also banged up but will be fine for our next game.

Arizona (14-2) at UCLA (8-8)

We drop two in a row now. It is not time to panic as they were both road games, but we cannot lose the momentum we built in the OOC portion of our schedule. The final here was 73-61. Valliere and Baptiste each scored 17 and Williams added 11. Shelly was injured today and will miss a week or two.

We defend our home court by a dozen points in a 69-57 victory. Baptiste had a terrific game again with 19 points as well as 11 rebounds. If this guy starts rebounding half as good as he scores, other teams are in for big problems. Valliere added 13 points.

We need to win our next three games to finish at 500 because our final 2 games are both in the state of Washington, where we just don’t get wins.

We drop this one 81-70, so the season comes down to one final game in order for us to finish at 500 and hopefully save my job. Baptiste had 22 in the losing effort and Shelly added a dozen.

(3) Arizona State (15-13) vs. (6) Arizona (18-10)

If these are my last games as the Arizona Head Coach, I sure don’t want to go out with a loss to the Sun Devils, but that is exactly what might happen as we lose 80-69. Our two seniors, Valliere and Williams played OK in the final game. Williams scored 11 with 10 boards and Valliere had 12 points.

The Match Ups

#3 Eastern Washington vs. #1 Duquesne
#2 Bethune-Cookman vs. #1 Penn

In game 1, Duquesne used their tournament experience and Junior PF Jimmy Sadler to advance with relative ease over Eastern Washington. Sadler is leaving after this year and wants to top his collegiate career with a title. Tonight he scored 23 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to lead the team to a 75-60 victory.

In Game 2, Penn’s Sophomore SF John Conley came to play. He scored a game high 21 points. Bethune-Cookman also has a ton of tournament experience though and they had a pair of star players tonight. Junior C Herbert Noonan and Sophomore SF Alex Dacosta both scored 18 points to lead Bethune to a 74-61 victory.

The finals was a complete blowout. Duquesne just dominated from start to finish in a 92-52 win. Senior SF Caleb Gonzalez was the high scorer with 14 points, but 3 other Duquesne players scored 11 tonight and the title goes to Duquesne, which is their 3rd title, tied for the most ever with Grambling!

Coaching Changes

Penn State fired their coach, Lenny Purser. They hired Will Vela, who was an assistant with Lehigh the last two years. This will be Will’s first head coaching job.

Prairie View fired their head coach and hired Forest Cusick from Savannah State. He has a 111-99 record. And 2 straight NCAA appearances.

San Francisco’s Les Emery has retired. They replace him with Josh Williams from Wyoming. He has a 326-242 record as a coach as well as a National Title in 1951 with Wyoming!

Santa Clara’s Michale Rodriguez retired. They replace him with Tom Robb from Eastern Washington. He has a 382-245 record as a coach and took his team to the Final Four last year.

Once again there are no changes to my coaching staff.

Here is the email I get from the AD:

Code:
Arizona Athletic Director Notes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Current Goal: Finish with atleast a .500 conference record. Job Evaluation: The board of trustees is very disappointed with your performance. It needs to improve. Budget Data: Total Budget: $237,500 Staff Salaries: $157,689 Season Recruiting Budget: $89,811 Monthly Recruiting Budget: $8,981 Training Facilities: Current Rating: 23 Conference Rank: 6

Just like last year, I am on the hot seat. I think winning Coach of the Year in the conference saved my job. I cannot count on that again.

Last year’s schedule worked great for us, and I will do the same exact thing this season

Recruiting

We have 2 scholarships to offer up this year. We will have needs at SF and PF in 2 years, and that is where we will begin our focus.

We did land one recruit in the early signing period. SF Eberhard Kreckel is from Weimar Germany. He is the #14 ranked foreign player this year.

Arizona Wildcats Roster

Centers

1 Alfonzo Baptiste C Jr 6'11" 224 Newman, CA

Baptiste gets the start once again at Center. He should be our leading scorer once again this year.

15 John Lindsey C So 6'10" 211 Lac St. Pierre, Canada

John will be the second backup for the low post positions, and he is actually last on my bench. I don’t expect him to see much court time at all.

Power Forwards

50 Andrew Amaral PF Sr 6' 9" 234 Lake Havasu City, AZ

Amaral is our top backup off the bench for the C and PF positions. He will bring in some great rebounding and some nice low post offense.

54 Joaquin Andres PF Jr 6' 7" 253 Silver City, NM

Andres gets the start again at PF. His defense is much superior to Amaral, and he is also an excellent rebounded.

53 Grant Weber PF Fr 6'10" 249 Eloy, AZ

Grant gets a red shirt this year.

Small Forwards

43 Jarrett Corley SF Sr 6' 7" 256 Kelseyville, CA

Corley will be the backup SF this year. He is good enough to start, I just decided to go with the younger Gallaway.

2 Steven Gallaway SF Jr 6' 7" 245 Tillsonburg, Canada

As I said above, Gallaway gets the start at SF this year. He has a very nice jump shot and is a very good defender on the perimeter. His post defense needs some work though.

Shotting Guards

45 Charles Shelly SG So 6' 4" 209 Canby, OR

Sheely is demoted to backup SG this year. He is still a fine player, but our red shirted freshman is ready to play now.

20 Alex Quach SG Fr 6' 2" 177 Eagar, AZ

Alex has great defense and great offense, so this is a no brainer to give him the starting no over the incumbent, Shelly.

Point Guards

32 César Moreno PG Jr 6' 3" 218 Gandia, Spain

Moreno is our top backup at the point, just as he was last year. He did a great job last year, and we except the same from him this season.

35 Paul Lin PG So 5' 7" 188 Las Vegas, NV

Paul is buried in the depth charts still and may never work his way out.

12 Tony Alcantar PG So 6' 1" 185 Cambria, CA

Tony gets the start again at the point thanks to his defensive play.

5 John Bates PG Fr 6' 0" 173 Bayard, NM

John gets a red shirt this season.

Not much change in coaching philosophy this year. We will run a medium paced, balanced offense. Baptiste and Quach will be our go to guys on offense.

We will run a man to man defense with just a bit of pressing and a bit of double teaming, only when needed.

I expect a better than 500 finish this year, with a very aggressive defense!

We did beat the Sun Devils twice this year, but winning a third time is always tough to do.

Brackets

West
1 Santa Clara
2 UMKC
3 Bradley
4 South Carolina State
16 Canisius
8 Troy State
9 Prairie View
15 Arizona
10 Fordham
14 Cal State Northridge
11 Delaware State

An extremely good and very deep region!

Mid West
1 Oakland
2 Weber State
3 Pepperdine
4 Southern Illinois
5 Sacramento State
7 IUPUI
10 Denver
6 Penn

Some great teams on top of this region, but not a lot of depth.

South
1 Coppin State
2 New Mexico State
3 Portland
4 Brown
8 Duquesne
5 Wichita State
14 Army

The 2 and the 4 seed are my prediction to meet in the Elite Eight. The other teams are not all that impressive, but watch for Duquesne as the 8 seed.

East
1 Yale
2 Northern Arizona
3 Bethune
4 St. Mary’s
16 UMBC
5 Stony Brook
7 Arkansas State
14 LaSalle
6 Princeton

Bethune is the only team in the top of this region that has accomplished anything in the last 10 years.

Looks like Wisconsin has become the darlings of the Big TenPlusOne. Who from the Big Ten actually made either field?

(2) #9 UMKC (26-6) vs. (15) Arizona (20-11)

We were able to stick with them for about 5 minutes, and then Baptiste went down with an injury. He did not return in the first half and we trailed 39-24 at the half.

When it was all said and done, we got crushed, 76-50. Alcantar scored 14 points, and Baptiste never returned from his injury. Still, it was a successful season.

NIT Results: Drake beats Illinois State

The Match Ups

#8 Troy State vs. #4 Brown
#1 Oakland vs. #3 Bethune-Cookman

In Game 1, Troy State’s Cinderella run as an 8 seed comes to and end, 61-48. Brown used a pair of 11 point performances from Senior Center Milton Howard and Junior PF Danial Howze, and a great defensive effort to advacne to the final game.

In Game 2, Oakland also had 2 great performances. Senior PG Daren Kennedy went for 20 points and Junior C Tyrell Tyler went for 18. Tyler has declared for the draft already. That lead to a 73-47 Oakland victory!

In the Finals, it was once again Brown’s defense that determined the outcome of the game. Brown shut down all of Oakland’s stars and held them to 57 points. Brown’s Senior PF Jarrod Poling had a double double with 11 points and 14 rebounds in a 68-57 victory. Brown claims their 3rd National Title and their 2nd in the last 4 years!

Our assistant coaches got some notice last year and they left for much more money as a couple of prominent programs in New Mexico and Fordham.

Her replace them with:

Chris Wells, Recruiter. Rated 36
Bobbie Linker, Scout. Rated 35

Scheduling.

We go with a slightly different philosophy this year. Since we only get 3 home games, we decide to try and bring some tougher competition into our arena. We still go very light on the road schedule.

Recruiting.

We have 4 scholarships to offer this year. Center and Power Forward are the biggest needs in recruiting this year. With 4 to offer though, we will go after anyone we can get.

We land one recruit in the early signing period. Center Ali Fink is from Tucson, AZ and is ranked as the #31 Center in the nation.

We are heavily recruiting another Center, a PF and an SF. We are leading on all of them, but that does not mean we will get them all by any means.

Arizona Wildcats Roster

Centers

1 Alfonzo Baptiste C Sr 6'11" 230 Newman, CA

Without a doubt, Baptiste is our starting Center and will be the #1 scoring option on this team.

15 John Lindsey C Jr 6'10" 211 Lac St. Pierre, Canada

John will be our primary backup for both of the low post positions this year. He is being groomed to take over the starting spot next year.

Power Forwards

54 Joaquin Andres PF Sr 6' 7" 254 Silver City, NM

Andres is our starting PF again. His defense is about as good as it possibly can be. He is also a rebounding machine. He has developed a bit of a post game on offense as well.

53 Grant Weber PF Fr 6'10" 259 Eloy, AZ

Weber is the secondary backup for both low post positions. He has a nasty offensive game, but his defense is going to hold him back in our program.

Small Forwards

2 Steven Gallaway SF Sr 6' 7" 246 Tillsonburg, Canada

Gallaway gets the start at SF again this year. He plays more like a SG, as he plays great offense and defense on the perimeter. His inside games needs a bit of work though.

30 James Millsaps SF Fr 6' 7" 232 San Diego, CA

James gets a red shirt this year.

44 Eberhard Kreckel SF Fr 6' 7" 240 Weimar, Germany

Eberhard is the backup SF as a true freshman. Gallaway will see a lot of minutes due to this fact.

Shooting Guards

45 Charles Shelly SG Jr 6' 4" 210 Canby, OR

I decide to give Shelly a red shirt this year, even though he was once our starter. We have a glutton of guards this year, and he has not used a red shirt yet.

20 Alex Quach SG So 6' 2" 178 Eagar, AZ

Alex is once again the starting SG. He is our #2 option on offense because he has a smooth jumper.

Point Guards

32 César Moreno PG Sr 6' 3" 219 Gandia, Spain

Cesar is the top backup off the bench and will backup both the PG and SG spots.

35 Paul Lin PG Jr 5' 7" 189 Las Vegas, NV

Lin is the second option off the bench and will also backup both guard spots.

12 Tony Alcantar PG Jr 6' 1" 185 Cambria, CA

Tony gets the starting nod again this year. His defense is phenomenal, and he can keep the defense honest with his shot.

5 John Bates PG Fr 6' 0" 173 Bayard, NM

Bates is at the very end of the bench, and just needs time for his game to come around. I like his game though.

Not much change in the way we will play again this year. We will run an averaged paced offense with Baptiste and Quach our inside out side threats. On defense we will run a man to man, which should be the best one we have run so far. We will press and trap a bit, since we have some solid depth. Our defense is very solid and there is no need to double team.
