Sly Leader takes the early lead. Purple is eighth. Tendresse takes over as Sly falters a bit. 500m to go and Tendresse still clings to her lead with Chateau, Sly and Purple well back. Aurore Roinville takes the lead with 300m left, but Sly is on the move on the outside. 200m now and Sly retakes the lead over Aurore and he increases his lead all the way to the finish, winning by 2 1/2 lengths.

Listed and Level II horses in this one. Ordinarily a walk for Favorite but not today with her form in the outhouse- a bad 63.8. She will be doing well to finish in the money- which is all we are betting on.

Delta Race runs to the early lead with Favorite settling on the rail in fourth (big mistake). Leaders are 3 wide with Delta, Society Magesty and Senor Nightmare jockeying for position. Society opens up a length lead on Delta down the back straight with Favorite stuck inside in fourth. With 500m left it's Society by 1 over Favorite but Favorite is still hemmed inside on the rail waiting for clearance. With 400m to go Society shoots forward from a whip and Favorite goes 6 rows outside looking to free herself as Themis Compagne takes advantage and surges forward. With 100m to the finish, Themis starts to accelerate and opens a lead that stands up for the win.

Another Almighty Farms horse in poor form as Imperatrice faces one of the best, Indien de France. Indien has seen an increase in her speed rating, we see, from our last encounter. Otherwise, mostly Level II stock to compete against.

Indien, Imperatrice and Minnesota lead the way, in that order. Down the back straight it's the same three, with Minnesota passing Imperatrice for second. The three take the final turn together and then, with 500m left, Minnesota surges slightly to the lead. 400m to go and Minnesota is the first with the whip and he surges. Marcos swats Imperatrice, but she doesn't respond well and Indien mves to second. 200m to go and Loupiot charges from nowhere to take the lead with Indien second. With 100m left, Indien leads by a head over Loupiot. Loupiot whips forward and Indien cannot answer, as Imperatrice flies by into second. Loupiot maintains and wins over Imperatrice by 3/4.

As usual Bug, a good question, and I wish I could give an adequate answer. Unfortunately, I really can't.

In the manual at one point, it points you, when discussing the jockey, to the "section choice of jockey in meeting mode." Well guess what? I looked and looked and the manual (at least the copy I got with the game) does NOT have a section titled 'meeting mode' anywhere. So I look for information and all I can find, basically, is that the jockey choice is very important. It says to pay attention to his characteristics: gains, salary, behavior. It never says how or why they matter or what anything would equate to.

So we just try to find one that says "horse was sharp, yada...." and keep using that one. Maybe Ladonia needs a better jock now that she is going International, but I don't know how to choose one except trial and error.

This time I am pretty sure I have it right- these are all 1-year old horses.

These are the horses available at the auction we are attending. We have plenty of room for as many as we think will end up being high level performers.

Take one, take none. What would you do with this group if you were in charge of Almighty Farms. General Almighty, the patriarch of the Almighty family has, of course, already made his choice(s) and (s)he or they are friskily prancing about the stables and pastures outside Dallas. What say you?

Here is a brief look at what the statistics are supposed to indicate:
  1. KM- fastest time for 1 kilometre
  2. Speed- maximum possible speed
  3. Acceleration- acceleration speed
  4. Technique- ability to overtake horses in a race
  5. Adaptability- to the behavior of the jockey
  6. Discipline- capacity to progress through training
  7. Resistance- capacity to sustain injuries
  8. Injure- shows how close to injury and how much an animal can take before it gets hurt
  9. Endurance- ability to sustain in longer races

This is another race where our entry, Hold, has low form. However, he got lucky on the draw as there are no standout horses, just a bunch of regular Level II horses with stats in the 50s and 60s.

Hold takes the lead out of the gate with Island Angel second. He holds the lead until the 300m to go mark when Island inches by. 200m to go and Island Angel and Hold are neck-and-neck. Nothing suspenseful happens, just Hold steadily pulls ahead to win easily by 3 1/2 lengths.

Tocar From Barons takes the lead as Feline looks sluggish in trying to get to the front. She manages to get to the rail in second but is immediately hemmed in by Riton a Jour. Tocar continues to lead but Beautiful Promotor joins him at the front in second with Feline dropping further behind. 500m to go and Tocar leads Riton by 1 1/2. At the 400m mark the lead extends to 2 1/2 over Riton. Nobody is able to close down on the leader and Tocar wins by 2 lengths, Riton in second.

---> The dietician came by to check on all our horses, except Purple Tearse (since she was not around at the start of the year). Each has had their diet checked and one more of the ingredients has been maximized to create a better mix.

---> Oh yeah, Imperatrice has been moved up a level through her latest race performance. She is now at Level III.

---> Fame has shot to 75. Almighty Farms is now tied for 37th place in the stable rankings.

Triple Crown: Yes, Virginia

There is a Triple Crown, albeit one with a serious error that could cost a horse a shot at winning all 3 races.

In an amusing attempt to keep out of court (I assume), the races are named...just slightly off.
  • Kentucky Dirby
  • Prikness Stakes
  • Belmont Stokes
The problem involves timing of the races. The Preakness is not 2 weeks after the Derby, but 1 week, meaning a horse running in both will not be able to recoup the loss of form from the Derby.

There is also the Santa Anita Handicap prior to the Kentucky Derby. Also, all of these races are run, in the game, at Arlington Park, as opposed to the real venues. Only those horses at Level I, International, will be eligible to pursue the dream, so Purple Tearse, or any of our other stock, has some work to do to be eligible to run.

But, hey, there will be a run at the Triple Crown.

I am curious to see her run in a million dollar race as well, kingfc, but it appears we will be waiting a while. For whatever reason, after B. Ladonia moved up in rank, her schedule is bare. She has no option to run a race until October and that is not a biggie race. Only one other 'til the new year. I guess she will be getting a lot of training in for the rest of this year.

The newest member of the Almighty Farms stable is Artisanale Pour L'Honneur. That is a bit much on the name front. We need to just go with Artisanale I think.

She was an obvious choice as soon as I saw the discipline and resistance ratings. With a 95.9 discipline score, she will be a training freak (at least based on what we have seen so far) and the high resistance means we can train her all we want and it won't really ever hurt her.

We took a long look at Lancelot, but with his injure rating already in the low 30s, we thought that training him to the level needed would make him a horse that breaks down all the time.

Key was another possibility, but she is just a poor man's Artisanale, in our opinion. Several others got a second glance but always had some flaw or another that made us pass on them.

So, welcome Artisanale to Almighty Farms. May she be a monster and we hope to see her in the Triple Crown ring in a couple of years.

Imperatrice breaks out to an immediate 5 length lead. The field finally catches her towards the end of the first turn with Heavenly Dynamite in second. Imperatrice builds a 1 1/2 length lead as many try to make a run at her but all fall back quickly to the pack. With 500m to go Heavenly makes a frenzied charge to take the lead but it lasts only a second as Green shows the whip to Imperatrice and she bolts, leaving the field in her dust. She wins going away by 7.

Samurai Mystery takes the early lead with Favorite on his heels. Purple takes a while to get to the rail in fourth. Down the back straight, Samurai takes the lead by 1 over Favorite with Purple stuck on the rail by Gambling Gift. In the final turn, it's Samurai by 1 1/2 over Favorite with Purple in third on the rail. 500m left and Favorite takes the lead by a head. With 400m left, Samurai gets the whip and moves past Favorite. 300m left and Purple and Favorite make a move simultaneously, going by Samurai. With 100m to the wire, Favorite clears the field, Purple follows but hasn't the energy to keep up and Favorite wins by 1/2 length.

---> Beautiful Ladonia is now the highest valued horse in the country (or the world. We don't know which the rankings are for) at $2,294,620. Former #1 horse, Gato, is now second with a value of $2,286,170. Way to go, B. Lad.

---> Ursulo has finally recovered from his illness. His form, however, is now in the toilet at 24, so he will remain unable to race as he gets back in condition.

---> Fame and place are unchanged.

We shouldn't count our chickens yet, having never seen what kind of stats a Level I, Internetional horse brings to a race. Of course, on the other hand, BL has lots of training she will be getting in before the Triple Crown races happen since there are only 2 races she can enter for the rest of '04.

What the Hell?? Feline gets to run against, that's right, Sly Leader, who just ran the previous race and still has his high form rating. That's an especially big problem in this game...not a big enough group to choose from, so the same horses are constantly running. That sucks.

Into the final turn, Sly Leader zips past Feline by 1/2 length. Note: I am putting a few lines between the race description and the result boxes. That way, if you are so inclined, when you scroll down and see a 'RESULTS' intro line, you can just look at the race log before you see the 'WINNER' box. Don't know if that will help, but some may like to read the log before seeing who wins as the 'WINNER' box is kinda big and bold.

Ursulo breaks cleanly to the rail in first with Golden Banana in second. Down the back straight the two are side-by-side in front with no other horse around them. With 500m to the wire, Ursulo leads by 3/4 over Golden. The closer to the finish, the wider the gap Ursulo has on Golden. Imperatrice is second to the rail behind OK but by the back straight, the 2 are side-by-side in front. With 500m to go, the pair are still dead even but other entrants are closing in. 400m to go and OK whips to the lead and...Armstrong what the hell are you thinking. Imperatrice's jockey has dropped her onto the rail right behind the leader and she is now trapped. Glass now comes up to OK with 300m left. 200m to the wire and Glass leads Thorough Pool by 1/2. Glass accelerates away from the field which opens the door for Imperatrice to make a run but it is far too late. Stupid jockey.

All entries, except Favorite are Level II with ratings in the 50s and 60s. OK, third in the last race, is entered again. We have figured a bit on the handicap from this race. As the Level III weenie, Favorite has 0 extra weight to carry, so she has an added advantage there.
