6.6 - October 17, 1989 - San Francisco Earthquake during the World Series (Natural Disaster)

America-Centric, oh yes. Do you go with something that has a mind-boggling death toll elsewhere, or a very well known event in the US? I'm going with the well known US event. Less than a half hour before the start of game 3 of the 1989 World Series in San Francisco, a major earthquake hit while ABC was broadcasting the pre-game show.

This earthquake measured 7.1 on the Richter Scale, the largest earthquake in the area since the 1906 earthquake(that's already been taken), and 67 people were killed. $6 billion in damage was caused by the quake.

You know.. I'm the big "America-Centric" hater here, but... I have three "I will always remember where I was" moments (pop-culture, not personal event) in my life: The San Francisco Earthquake, The OJ Low-Speed Chase and September 11, 2001.

As far as fictional dates go, I don't think the month and day here are well-known at all (even though they become very important later in the story). But I'm guessing the year might ring a bell for some people...

April 4, 1984 - "It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen..." (Fiction)

That's the other fictional date I was thinking about.

As we move on, we're going to run into more and more "illegal" picks, either due to date overlap or people doubling up on months.

My recommendation would be to invoke the Minnesota Vikings rule: if you don't make a valid pick, everyone else can keep going until you correct it. It's not meant so much to punish somebody for a mistake, but rather to make sure we don't have to pause for hours at a time because somebody thought they made a valid pick and didn't check back.

This reminds me of one of my favorite Daily Show moments. Jon Stewart was talking about MTV and said something along the lines of "The first video ever shown on the channel was 'Video Killed the Radio Star'. That's a neat little bit of trivia... that everybody knows. So if you're one of those people who insists on always bringing it up, stop it!"

6.10 May 30, 1431 - Joan of Arc is burned at the Stake (Pre-17th Century Europe)

Arguably the most influential woman military leader of all time has been a subject of interest in her own time and ours. I'm putting it in 17th Century Europe for now, but am considering switching it to Birth/Deaths if a couple of my ideas there are taken/blocked before I can get to them.
