I am pleased to annouce, that after weighing my options and considering the opinions that you guys contributed, I have taken over the head coaching job at the University of Arizona! The PAC 10's conference prestige is 2. Arizona's prestige is 23. This is clearly an entry level job into the world of NCAA coaching.
I am a 25 year old head coach. Level 0. Ratings: Recruiting 35 Scouting 35 Offense 15 Defense 15

I can do something like that. Maybe 1 player a year. I would like to create you guys in line with the type of players the schools are getting though. I'll try to add something like that in the coming seasons.

Coaching Movement:
Illinois fired their head coach after 3 consecutive losing seasons. They hired Doug Hitt, a Pepperdine assistant as the new head coach. Doug had a head coaching job with McNeese State about 10 years ago, where he went 70-102.

1950-1951
Early on my first day on the job, I get an email from the Athletic Director: Code:
I already have a coaching staff, but I think a slight change might be in order. I am happy with my sout and recruiter: Daniel Charette, Recruiter. Rating 62 Arthur Daly, Scout. Rating 48. I decide to fire my coaching assistant. I replace him with: William Davis, Assistant. Rated 34 on offense and 48 on defense. My coaching philosophy: The first thing I am going to look at when deciding who will play and who will not play is their defensive ability. Certainly, my options will be limited at this point in my career, as I am inheriting a whole team of players that are not my own. Slowly, but surely, I will be bringing in my type of players. Great defensive for my guards. Great defense and some rebounding ability for my big men. I will sacrafice defense for offense at the SF position only. I love at a guy at SF who can score from inside and outside, and will try to make the SF the focus of my offense. Arizona History Code:
Despite a Final Four appearance back in 1933, this team has been bad for a long time. Just 2 winning season since 1942 and one of those season was just 16-15. Scheduling Phase. I am not interested in putting together a top 25 schedule here. I will schedule 2, maybe 3 games against top competition. The rest of the games, in particular the early portion of the schedule, should be bad teams. Like Arizona. Code:
Recruiting Phase. This year we have 2 scholarships available to us. We won’t have any pressing positional needs to fill next year so we are going after the best players available to my program that fit my style. In the early signing period we got one guy, and we went after him hard. SG Brian James, from Las Vegas, NV has committed to Arizona. Brian is a 3 star recruit. He is ranked #85 overall in the West Region. His defensive potential is a B, and his shooting is excellent. If my scouts are even close on this guy, he is a marksman from three point range! Code:
I am also heavily recruiting a local point guard from Tucson, Guy Wheeler. He is also a 3 star prospect, and if I can land him I have both of my guards in place for the next 4 years!

Took chicken to play Northern Arizona Marmel...jk jk
Good luck at Arizona. Also did anyone realize that Brown pulled in probably the closest recruiting ever to the Fab Five by getting recruits 6, 8, 10, 18, and 39! Must be a lot of smart guys who can play basketball. Last edited by bballdanman5 : 02-09-2004 at 03:59 PM. |

Introducing the Arizona Wildcats for the 1950-1951 Season
Centers 0 Rich Buss C Sr 7' 1" 242 Whittier, CA Buss will get the start at Center this year. As a starter last season, he averaged only 5 points a game, but did grab almost 9 rebounds per game. He is solid on defense and has great rebounding ratings. He will not be much of an offensive weapon again this year. 34 Scott Hernandez C Fr 6' 9" 224 Bakersfield, CA Scott is a true freshman and will back up the Center spot. He won’t see much time, but should provide a bit of a scoring punch at the Center spot when needed. He should compliment Rich Buss very well this year. 2 Kenny Koontz C Fr 6' 9" 204 Maynardville, TN Kenny is getting a red shirt this season. Power Forwards 31 Rudy Nelson PF Jr 6'10" 216 Concord, CA Rudy will get the start at PF this year. Defensively, he is fine, and he does give us a much needed scoring option down low. This will be his first year as a starter. 12 Carl Rausch PF So 6' 9" 210 Chino Valley, AZ Carl will backup the PF spot, as well as see a few minutes at Center. He is a nice compliment to Nelson because he can come in and help out on the boards. He is not much of a scoring threat, but he can play decent defense. 25 Walter Walsh PF Fr 6'11" 224 Mesa, AZ Walter is a freshman and is similar to Rausch. I don’t expect him to see the floor this year, but in the future he will be useful I think. Small Forward 55 Gaston Ortiz SF Jr 6' 5" 212 Orofino, ID Ortiz is out best option at SF, but I am not very excited by his skills to be honest with you. His defense is below average, as is his offense. He started last year as a sophomore and averaged 10 points and 5.5 rebounds. If he could improve upon that a little bit, I think we will be OK here for now. 1 Russ Kim SF So 6' 7" 226 Duncan, AZ Kim is the main backup at SF. His offense is better than Ortiz’s, but his defense is bad. 21 Robert Grundy SF So 6' 8" 250 Raton, NM Grundy will also see some time at SF. He does play great defense in the post, but is horrible on the perimeter. He also has a solid three point shot, but not much other offensive capability. Shooting Guards 41 Ward McGaha SG So 6' 5" 208 Woods Cross, UT McGaha gets the start at SG, only because we have no other options. He does play great defense but for a shooting guard, he has no shot. 14 Maximo Lewis SG Fr 6' 6" 190 Las Vegas, NV Lewis gets a red shirt this year. 30 Chris Pope SG Fr 6' 5" 184 Rockville, MD Pope also gets a red shirt this year. Point Guard 35 Henry Eubank PG Sr 6' 3" 204 Richmond, CA Henry might be the best player on our team. He gets the start at the point. His defense is not what I want in a point guard, but I really have to give him the start, or we will struggle to do anything on offense. He has great shooting ability and is great at getting steals. Last year he scored 13 points a game and had 3.5 assists along with 2.6 steals per game. He tends to run the ball over as he had 3 turnovers a game last year. 3 Thomas Floyd PG So 6' 1" 198 Albuquerque, NM Floyd won’t see much court time this year. He will be the second backup at both the point and SG spots. 10 Albert Gouge PG Fr 6' 3" 186 Tomales, CA I like Gouge and he will be the primary backup at both guard spots. He plays decent defense and also can score a bit for us. We are going to run a pretty balanced offense this year. A little motion and a medium paced game. We won’t rely too much on the 3 point shot, but if the guy is open, he is free to take it. We have some athletes, so we are going to run a press and trap half court and full court defense….mixing it up. On defense, we will run a 3-2 zone with some doubling as necessary.

Stupid me. I just remembered that there is no 3 point shot in this dynasty. Forget all that 3 point stuff I just mentioned.

November 12, 1950
Kansas (0-0) at Arizona (0-0) My first game as a head coach was a great success. We blew Kansas out on our home court, 69-44. Rich Buss had a career high 20 rebounds on opening day. Eubank was the scoring threat I expected him to be with a game high 22 points. That was also a career high for him. Ortiz was named the game MVP for his 11 points, 4 assists and 8 rebounds. If I get that from him every game, I will be quite happy. Code:
November 17, 1950 Arizona (1-0) at Colorado (0-0) Our first road game of the year is a success, and I am 2-0 as a head coach after a 72-64 victory. Eubank was the game MVP with 26 points, 5 assists and 7 rebounds. Ortiz was solid again at SF with 15 points and 9 boards. Code:
November 22, 1950 Arizona (2-0) at TCU (0-1) We run our record to 3-0 on the season with a 89-76 victory on the road today. Eubank continues to shine. He scored another 23 points today and was again named game MVP. Ortiz added 14 and 7 rebounds and Buss broke out with 16 points. Code:
November 28, 1950 Arizona (3-0) at Furman (1-1) Another solid road victory for us, as we take this one 70-59. Eubank scored 18 with 5 assists to again win game MVP. Ortiz added another 10 with 4 boards. He is providing us exactly what we need from him. Code:
November Recruiting. That PG we are after still has not signed with anyone. It seems to be a contest between us and Long Beach State for his services. In the mean time I am contacting my two backup plans. A SF and another Point Guard.

December 3, 1950
Michigan State (0-5) at Arizona (4-0) We return home and keep our perfect record in tact with a 76-63 victory over the Spartans. Eubank is the game MVP again, for the fourth game in a row. He scored 21 points today. PF Nelson and SG McGaha each added 14 points towards our cause. Code:
December 9, 1950 Arizona (5-0) at St. Louis (2-4) Our offense is doing much better than I expected this year. Eubank is of course the catalyst. He scored a game high 28 points today. Ortiz has been really good. In fact, I thought his averages would be about half of what he is getting based on his ratings. Today he scored 14 for us. A couple bench players came in and each contributed 10 points today: C Scott Hernandez and SG Thomas Floyd. The final score here was 76-69. Code:
December 12, 1950 St. Peter’s (4-3) at Arizona (6-0) Our undefeated run finally comes to a thud. We got blasted at home, 78-57. Eubank was held in check and only scored 14 points for us today. It might appear that Buss played good, with 9 points and 14 boards, but he got eaten up by the opposing center, who went for 23 points today. Ortiz had his first bad game of the season. Let’s hope this does not start a trend for him. Code:
December 20, 1950 Arizona (6-1) at Syracuse (5-2) The long flight East took its toll on our kids, but somehow we found a way to pull out a narrow 67-65 victory over the ‘Cuse. Eubank went off for 27 points and McGaha scored 15 to help us get the win. Code:
December 24, 1950 Colorado State (5-4) at Arizona (7-1) We drop our second game in three tries today, 64-61. Eubank did everything he could do in scoring 20 points and handing out 8 assists. Buss was also solid with 8 points and 13 boards. Ortiz was in foul trouble all game long and finished with a big goose egg. McGaha only chipped in with 6. We will need more from the SG spot in order to win games if Ortiz is struggling. One of those guys has to step up in every game. Code:
December 28, 1950 Arizona (7-2) at Washington State (1-8) We are now officially in a slump as we drop this road game, and conference opener, 71-67. Eubank led the team with 18 points today. McGaha and Ortiz contributed with a combined 19 points as well, but it still was not enough. The problem was a bad shooting percentage for our guards. Eubank and McGaha were a combined 11 for 29. Code:
December 30, 1950 Arizona (7-3) at Washington (6-3) We rebound with a win against a traditionally solid Washington squad, 50-47. This kind of grind it out, defensive game is what I expected all season long. Eubank led the team with 16 points. McGaha added 11 and Buss had 10 boards. Code:
December Recruiting. PG Guy Wheeler declined our scholarship offer and decided to attend Long Beach State. We have to move to our backup plan at PG. We also contacted a guy from Canada as the new backup plan. Ortiz was injured in our last game and will miss a couple of weeks of play.

January 4, 1951
UCLA (4-6) at Arizona (8-3) We fall to 1-2 in conference play with a 77-75 loss today. Eubank was limited in his playing time due to foul problems and finished with just 11 points. Kim started at the SF spot and chipped in with 8 points. Buss led the team with 12. When Buss leads the team in scoring, you know we are in trouble. Code:
January 6, 1951 Southern California (4-8) at Arizona (8-4) We rebound with a win at home to even up our conference record at 2-2. The final score today was 66-61. Eubank came back with a strong game and scored 18 points. PF Nel,son had maybe the best offensive game of the season for him with 14 points. Code:
January 11, 1951 Washington State (4-9) at Arizona (9-4) Our season continues to be an up and down one. We drop another close one at home, 71-70. Eubank scored 17 and McGaha added 15. Buss had 9 points and 14 boards. Washington State only had 1 starter in double figures. Two of their starters scored just 1 point each. They just wore us down with their incredible depth. Code:
January 13, 1951 Washington (8-5) at Arizona (9-5) We play our best game of the conference schedule so far and beat Washington 76-57 to sweep them on the season. This also evens our conference record at 3-3. Eubank scored 22 today. Kim added 13 from the SF spot. Buss had 11 boards. We lost PF Nelson in this game for about 2 months. Code:
January 18, 1951 Arizona (10-5) at California (9-6) We pick up a huge road win today, 72-70. Eubank struggled bad today, shooting just 2 for 11-0 from the field. He finished with 9 points. Buss picked up the slack with a monster game, scoring 22 points and pulling in 13 rebounds. McGaha was also great with a 20 point night. Carl Rausch, our new starting PF chipped in with 6 points and 7 boards in his first start. Code:
January 20, 1951 Arizona (11-5) at Stanford (6-9) We win back to back road games by the narrowest of margins. Today’s final score was 56-55. Eubank was back on his game and scored a team high 15. Ortiz and Rausch both chipped in 13 points each and Buss hauled in 12 rebounds. Code:
January 25, 1951 California (10-7) at Arizona (12-5) We pick up our third consecutive conference victory today with a 66-59 win. Eubank had the hot hand again tonight, finished with 25 points. Buss is having a nice run of games as he scored 11 and grabbed 18 boards today. Code:
January 27, 1951 Stanford (6-11) at Arizona (13-5) We lay a big egg at home today and drop a game to one of the conference bottom feeders, 73-63. Eubank scored 15 for us, while Ortiz and Buss each added 10. Buss also grabbed a dozen rebounds, but the opposing center scored a team high 15 points against him. Code:
January Recruiting. We got our point guard. He was our second option from the start, but he is still a good fit for our team. Preston Thornton is from Gilbert, AZ. He is a 3 star recruit and is ranked #73 in the West Region. He plays very good defense and is great at driving and finishing in the paint. Code:

February 1, 1951
Arizona (13-6) at UCLA (10-8) In what was to be a battle for first place, UCLA took complete control of the conference race with a convincing 69-52 victory over us. Eubank did fine, scoring 19 points and Ortiz added 10. Their PF just overwhelmed us though with 21 points and 11 boards. Code:
February 3, 1951 Arizona (13-7) at Southern California (9-11) Our season is starting to fall apart and we drop to 6-6 in conference play with a 76-50 beating today. Eubank was held to just 12 points and he was our leading scorer. That pretty much says it all. Code:
February 8, 1951 Arizona (13-8) at Oregon State (9-11) We pick up a huge win to get back over 500 in conference play. Remember, the AD expects me to finish with at least a 500 record in the PAC 10. The final here was 57-52. Eubank led the team with 16 points and Ortiz added 13. Buss cleaned up the boards with 16 rebounds. Code:
February 10, 1951 Arizona (14-8) at Oregon (11-10) We drop a close one today, 85-81. We just cannot seem to get any momentum going and keep it going from game to game at this point. Eubank had a huge game with 28 points and Ortiz added another 24. We took the game to overtime but rank out of steam today. Code:
February 15, 1951 Oregon (12-10) at Arizona (14-9) Just when things are down low, we come right back and blow out Oregon 81-60. Eubank with another huge game, led the team with 28 points. I am really going to miss him next year. Ortiz and Buss added 11 points each. Code:
February 17, 1951 Oregon State (11-12) at Arizona (15-9) Our defense was picture perfect today and we win two in a row with a 66-40 victory. Eubank was held to just 10 points but still handed out 7 assists. Both Ortiz and McGaha scored 14 points each to lead the team. Both Buss and Rausch grabbed double digit rebounds. Code:
February 20, 1951 Arizona (16-9) at Memphis (12-12) We step out of conference for a little break and pick up a nice 80-72 victory. Eubank sets a new career high in scoring with a 30 point night. Ortiz added 11 and Gouge came off the bench to chip in with 10 points. Code:
February 24, 1951 Arizona State (9-17) at Arizona (17-9) Our last two games are against in state rival ASU. We take the first leg of the home and home series, 77-66. All 5 of our starters were able to score in double figures today, led by SG McGaha with 15. Buss scored 13 and had 12 rebounds. Eubank scored 13 tonight. Code:
March 1, 1951 Arizona (18-9) at Arizona State (9-18) We blow our chance to sweep ASU this year by dropping this regular season finale, 69-67. Eubank finished with 19 points tonight while Rausch had a double double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Code:

PAC 10 Wrap up and Post Season Tournament
Code:
March 8, 1951 (3) Arizona (18-10) vs. (6) Oregon (14-14) Only 8 of the PAC 10 teams advance to the post season tournament and we are a 3 seed in my first year here. Thanks to Eubank, we are now in the semi-finals after a 75-66 victory over Oregon. Eubanks was our leading scorer with 17 points and also our leading rebounded with 9. He had 3 assists for good measure. McGaha and Ortiz both had great games as well, combining for 29 points between them. Code:
March 9, 1951 (7) Washington (15-14) vs. (3) Arizona (19-10) It proves a bit too tough for us to win 3 games against Washington this year. We took the two regular season games, but they got us when it counted the most. The final score was 75-73. Eubank scored 15 points, but Ortiz led the way with 18 and McGaha added 16. Now we have to sit back and wait to see if we are invited to the NIT. Code:
Washington went on to beat UCLA in the finals, 60-59, and earn a trip the NCAA Tournament.

(10) Arizona (19-11) at (7) Cal Poly (17-14) - NIT Preliminary Round The good new is that we made a post season tourney. The bad news is that our season ended with a good thumping. We lost this one 81-62. Eubank ended his career on a real sour note, shooting 3 for 11 for only 6 points. McGaha scored 14 points to lead the team. He is making a final statement to keep his starting job next season when my own SG comes into the program. Senior C Rich Buss ends his career with 11 rebounds, but only 2 points. Code:

tough loss, but i m glad to see you accepted my idea of UofA. You actually led the nation in steals, which is awsome. Keep of the solid work!

In the South, we lost another #1 seed as Duquesne falls victim to #5 Oakland. Oakland will matchup with #3 Norfolk State in the next round. They beat #2 New Mexico State to advance. Final Four
In the NIT Finals, UMKC beats Wisconsin for the Title. The Match Ups #5 IUPUI vs. #3 Norfolk State #7 San Francisco vs. #1 Brown In Game 1, IUPUI just totally outclassed Norfolk State. Junior SG Doug Tong was the best player on the court tonight. He was ranked #113 in 1947. He was the game high scorer with 21 points. Another Junior, PF Doug Vogt also had a huge game. He was ranked #17 overall in 1947 and scored17 points along with 13 rebounds tonight. All that gave IUPUI the 79-58 victory and a spot in the Finals. In Game 2, #1 Brown was also outclassed. San Francisco was led by an amazing performance from Senior SF Will Burrus. Will was ranked #38 in 1945 and saved his best game for the final Four as he poured in 33 points to lead San Francisco to a 80-63 win. In the Finals, Burrus had another huge game, scoring 24 points, but IUPUI had much more than that. Their starting SF, John Mines only scored 11 points, but his backup, Senior Colton Turpin, ranked #8 overall (how nice is it to have a top 10 recruit be a backup as a senior?) scored a game high 21 points in just 12 minutes of play. This scoring outburst allowed IUPUI to pull away in the second half and cruise to a 81-69 victory and a National Title!

Arizona Off Season
I take a two week vacation after our season comes to an end and when I return to my office, I have this email in my inbox, from the AD: Code:
I request an upgrade to our training facilities. I also find out that my scout, Arthur Daly has retired. We will need to replace him. Jefferson Truelove, Scout. Rated 42. My assistant coach has been hired away by Air Force, so we need to replace him as well. Bert Partain, Assistant. Rated 28 on offense. 47 on defense. Scheduling Phase. I think last year’s strategy is the way to go. I will start the season with teams in my prestige range and slowly build up to a couple of good challenges. Code:
My request for a facilities upgrade was approved. It will be ready for next season! Recruiting Phase. I have 2 scholarships to offer again this year. I will be targeting SF, PF and C positions this year. We land one recruit in the early signing period. SF Robert Valliere is from Vernal, UT. He is a 3 star recruit and ranked #82 overall in the West Region. He plays like a PF, but can get outside and defend as well. Code:
We have one more scholarship to offer and right now I am offering it to a Center. The backup plan is another center and another SF to offer up.

November 18, 1951
Indiana (0-0) at Arizona (0-0) It is great to start the season out on a winning note, and we did it exactly how I would have hoped. With defense. The final score was 64-43. Ortiz opens with a huge game, and we hope this does not end up being his season high. He went for 22 today. He did break his nose late in the game, but I think he will be ready to go in our next game. Code:
November 24, 1951 Arizona (1-0) at Ohio State (0-0) We win our road opener as well and get off to a 2-0 start after a 67-63 victory. McGaha had a solid game, leading the team with 18 points. Ortiz added 10, still playing at less than 100 percent. Freshman PG Preston Thornton had a nice game with 13 points. Rausch was huge on the boards with 17. Code:
November 29, 1951 Arizona (2-0) at Tulane (0-2) Another nice performance today as we win 80-61. Ortiz was back to 100% and played like it. He led the game with 21 points. Thornton had 16 points along with 5 assists. Rausch pulled in another 10 rebounds. Code:
November Recruiting. We rounded out our recruiting class with the Center we wanted. Lon Williams is a 3 star recruit and is ranked as the #32 Center overall! Code:

December 3, 1951
Canisius (1-3) at Arizona (3-0) Our first real test of the year is an average Canisius team. Although they make the tournament every now and then, they showed we are not at that level yet. We drop this one 79-64. Thornton and Nelson each scored 10 points, but nobody else played consistently, and the defense was poor today. Code:
December 8, 1951 Arizona (3-1) at Missouri (0-2) We don’t came back well at all after out first loss and now drop our second in a row, 86-71. McGaha and Thornton each scored 16 points and Ortiz added 10, but once again the defense was nowhere to be found. Code:
December 14, 1951 #8 Long Beach State (6-0) at Arizona (3-2) When I scheduled this game, I never imagined this team would be a top 10 team! We played them tough from start to finish but could not close the deal and we lose our 3rd straight, 75-73 in overtime. Ortiz was our leading scorer with 19 points. Rausch had a great game, hopefully a breakout for him, with 14 points and 12 boards. Code:
December 20, 1951 Seton Hall (3-3) at Arizona (3-3) Things are starting to crumble and changes might be in order very soon. We drop another one. The final score was 77-62. McGaha scored 18 to lead the team. Gouge came off the bench with a solid 14 point game and Thornton added a dozen. Code:
December 30, 1951 Arizona (3-4) at St. Peter’s (3-6) We now drop our 5th straight game, and I will be juggling the lineup before we play again. Ortiz was the only offensive force today, scoring 15. Code:

Nelson was taken out of the lineup at Center and Hernandez is given the chance to start. Nelson will back up both the C and PF spots. McGaha will see his PT increased, while Thornton’s will probably drop a bit. Not because of his performance, but because Gouge will see more time.
January 5, 1952 Arizona State (1-9) at Arizona (3-5) The conference season begins now, and we start with a fresh slate. It didn’t take long to screw that up though as we lose the conference opener, at home, 69-63. Hernandez was alright in his first start of the year, scoring 5, but grabbing 14 boards. Rausch scored 10 along with 9 boards. Thornton was the leading scorer with 16. Code:
January 10, 1952 Oregon State (5-7) at Arizona (3-6) We finally break the 6 game losing streak, barely, but we get the 61-60 victory at home. Their PF went off for 33 points, but We had balanced scoring and just enough to win. Ortiz led the team with 11 points and Thornton added 10. Code:
January 12, 1952 Oregon (4-8) at Arizona (4-6) It kills me to do it, but I want to try out Gouge as the starting PG and move Thornton to the bench. He should still get a lot of playing time, but I need to try out some things here. It didn’t result in a win today though. We drop this one 65-62. Gouge was our leading scorer today though with 15 points and also had 6 assists. Hernandez added 12 points and 13 rebounds. Code:
January 14, 1952 Colorado (7-5) at Arizona (4-7) More juggling of the lineup as Gouge moves to the starting SG spot and thornton takes over the starting point spot again. That means McGaha will backup the guard spots. The results still are not better as we lose again at home, 72-68. Thornton scored 16 points to lead the team. Both of our big men had double doubles. The real problem with this team is the SG and SF spots right now. I am not getting any production there. Code:
January 17, 1952 Arizona (4-8) at Arizona State (4-9) This season is getting very, very ugly. We lose again, 83-74. Thornton had a career game with 24 points, but it was all for nothing. Ortiz added 16 with 11 rebounds. Code:
January 20, 1952 Michigan (8-4) at Arizona (4-9) Might as well give the other freshman a shot. Brian James gets the start at SG today, and it was ugly. We get crushed 73-54 today. Ortiz scored 17 to lead us and Thornton added 15. James shot 1 for 8 for 2 points. Code:
January 24, 1952 Arizona (4-10) at UCLA (7-9) Another game, another loss. The final here was 66-58. Gouge came off the bench to lead the team with 14 points. Thornton and Ortiz added 10 each. Code:
January 26, 1952 Arizona (4-11) at Southern California (4-13) We started the season 3-0, and since them we have gone 1-11. Well, today we turn it around and pick up a win on the road, 73-54. Ortiz and McGaha led the team with 16 points each and Thornton added 10. Code:
January 31, 1952 California (12-4) at Arizona (5-11) We win two in a row now, and if we can win our next game we get back to 500 in conference play. That is what the AD expects, and if I can finish there, it would be a nice turnaround to the season. The final here was 74-64. Gouge again led the team in scoring off the bench with 14. Ortiz added 13 and Hernandez had 12. Rausch was just short of a double double with 9 points and 11 boards. Code:

February 2, 1952
Stanford (3-14) at Arizona (6-11) We work our way back to .500 in conference play with a 57-53 victory at home today. Hernandez was a monster and played the best game of his career. He scored 19 points and pulled in 19 rebounds, both career highs for him! Code:
February 7, 1952 Southern California (5-15) at Arizona (7-11) I don’t know if we are out of our funk, or if the competition is really bad, but we pick up yet another win, 78-66. We had 3 players each score a dozen points to lead us to the win: Ortiz, McGaha and Rudy Nelson (off the bench). Code:
February 9, 1952 UCLA (11-10) at Arizona (8-11) Another huge win, 65-57, and this one puts us Just 1 game out of first at 6-4 in conference play. Ortiz has a 20 point night and Hernandez continues to play well with 11 points and 6 boards. Code:
February 14, 1952 Arizona (9-11) at Washington State (10-10) Our streak comes to an abrupt end as we get crushed on the road today, 83-62. Ortiz scored 13, but nobody else could get the ball in the hoop. Code:
February 16, 1952 Arizona (9-12) at Washington (14-7) We get hammered for the second consecutive game on the road. The final today was 79-60 and we fall back to .500 in conference play. Thornton had 15 points, but the rest of the team struggled and the defense was a sieve. Code:
February 21, 1952 Washington (15-7) at Arizona (9-13) As we come down the stretch, every game is so important if we are going to finish even in conference play. Our hopes take a hit as we lose at home today, 69-60. Ortiz had 17 points to lead us, but their point guard went crazy for 20 and they take the win. Code:
February 23, 1952 Washington State (13-10) at Arizona (9-14) With our last 4 games on the road, this is a must win, but we don’t play like it and lose 73-65. Hernandez led the team with 15 points and 9 rebounds, but he gave up 17 points and 13 rebounds. Code:
February 28, 1952 Arizona (9-15) at Stanford (6-18) We pick up a win here and now we just need to go 2-1 the rest of the way to finish even. The final here was 66-62. Hernandez with yet another big game, scoring 19 and grabbing 14 boards. Code:

Arizona (10-15) at California (19-6) We get beat up on the road today, and now must win our final 2 games. 78-66 was the final score. Thornton led the team with 21 and Ortiz had 17. Hernandez fouled out with just 1 point. Code:
March 6, 1952 Arizona (10-16) at Oregon (9-17) Well, we failed. We lost this game 84-73 and the best we can finished is 8-10 in league play. Now the concern is to finish top 8 so we can at least play in the conference tournament. Right now we are in 7th place. Code:
March 8, 1952 Arizona (10-17) at Oregon State (9-18) We finish the regular season with a win that ensures us a spot in the PAC 10 tournament. The final here was 79-69. Ortiz led us with 14 points while three other players scored in double figures. Code:

Sweet Sixteen Highlights
The #1 seeds were just rolling along, looking like maybe we might have all 4 in the Final four. That was until this round. We lost 75% of the #1 seeds. The only one to survive was Drake in the Midwest Region. #1 Penn lost to #4 Wyoming. #1 Duquesne lost to #5 Georgia State. #1 Brown lost to #4 Fordham. On the bottom of the brackets, #2 Weber State advanced over #2 Weber State. #2 Oakland beat #3 Sacramento State. #2 Loyola beat #6 Southern Illinois. #10 Princeton beat #3 Northern Arizona in a real shocker. Elite Eight Highlights In the West Region, #4 Wyoming beats #2 Weber State and they are the finrst team to qualify for the Final Four. In the Midwest, #2 Oakland knocks off #1 Drake to advance. #2 Loyola, in the South Region, beats #5 Georgia State. Finally in the East, #10 Princeton continues its Cinderella run by advancing to the Final Four with a victory over #4 Fordham.

Final Four
In the NIT, Wichita State beats Valparaiso for the Title. The Match Ups #4 Wyoming vs. #2 Loyola #2 Oakland vs. #10 Princeton In game 1, Loyola was heavily favored and used their size advantage to build an early lead. Junior PF Virgil Levan, ranked #4 overall in 1948 scored 15 points. Senior Center, Zacarias Leon, ranked #307 in 1946, scored 15 of his own. However, the second half saw one of the greatest performances by a singloe player in Final Four history. Junior SF Joquin Pilcher, a JUCO transfer and ranked #5 overall last year scored 33 points, most in the second half. Pilcher is leaving for the draft and going out with a real bang this year. He led Wyoming to a blowout victory, 92-74. In Game 2, Oakland had a great performance from Senior PF Derick Erb. Erb scored 20 points. This seems to be the year for Princeton though. They had a pair of Shooting Guards, Senior Warren Cabrales and Senior Eusebio Spillman. They combined for 29 points and 12 rebounds! They led Princeton to a 78-70 victory. Princeton’s amazing run came to a crash landing in the Finals. They got punked hard, 99-44. That is a 55 point loss for those who are counting. Wyoming had Sophomore Center Chris Judkins. Judkins was the #17 recruit back in 1948, and today he was dominate. He might have had the best performance by a Center in the final Four, ever. He scored 27 points and hauled in 19 rebounds. He just dominated the paint. Princeton’s opposing Center had no answer. He scored no points and fouled out after just 9 minutes of play. His backup did no better, scoring just 4 points and grabbing only 2 rebounds. Total domination and he will be back for at least one more year!

Arizona, 1952-1953
Assistant Coaches Phase. This year, all three of my assistants remain for another run. Here they are again: Daniel Charette, Recruiter. Rated 62 Jefferson Truelove, Scout. Rated 42 Bert Partain, Asssitant. Rated 28 Offense, 47 Defense Scheduling Phase. I really don’t see any need to change what I am doing here. In fact, last year I might have made the schedule a little too tough for my team. I think we have a good mix of games this year: Code:
Recruiting Phase. We have a lot of work to do this year. We have 5 scholarships to hand out. Primary needs are PF and SF right now. Obviously, with the state of this program, we are just trying to get the best guys that we can, who fit into what we are trying to accomplish. When the early signing period comes to an end, we have filled two scholarships, and both of them are at the key positions we need to fill SF Jarrett Corley is from Kelseyville, CA. He is a 3 star recruit and ranked #89 overall in the West Region. He is pretty good on inside defense, but needs to work on his perimeter defense. It looks like he will be able to develop a nice scoring touch down low as well. Code:
PF Joaquin Andres is from Silver City, NM. He is a 3 star recruit and is ranked as the 16th best PF in the West Region. He is a good fit for our program. Great defense and an equally great rebounded. His offensive game is raw, but shows a ton of potential. I think by the time he is a Senior, he will be one of the best I have recruited so far. Code:
We have a slew of guys we are still looking at, a PG in particular, but it might be a long shot to land him.

This year we have ten 5 star recruits. Only 3 of them have declared for the NBA draft. Four of them have already committed to schools:
#1 SG Stephen Clemons, from Conneaut, OH has committed to Wyoming. #4 PF Jarrod Poling, from Butler, NJ, has committed to Brown. #5 PF Robert Lasher, from Sterlington, LA, has committed to Wyoming. #8 SF John Goldsberry, from Louisville, KY has committed to Oakland. Wyoming’s National Title is paying some quick dividends! The others who have not decided yet: #2 PF Isidro Caudell, from Owings Mills, MD: Penn, Brown #6 SG Estevan Iglesias, from Gijon, Spain: Northern Arizona, Brown #9 PG Edgar Allen, from Walkersville, MD: Sac State, Penn, Oakland Pre Season Polls Code:

1952-1953 Arizona Wildcats
Centers 34 Scott Hernandez C Jr 6' 9" 228 Bakersfield, CA Scott started to come on strong during the latter part of the season last year. I am still not very happy with the way he plays defense, but with only a true freshman competing for the job, Scott wins it. Last year he averaged 7.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. 23 Lon Williams C Fr 6' 9" 234 Westminster, CA Lon should develop into exactly the type of player I like down in the low post. He already knows how to guard his man, he just needs a little work on scoring. He will backup Hernandez and see some decent playing time I think. Power forwards 12 Carl Rausch PF Sr 6' 9" 212 Chino Valley, AZ Carl keeps his starting job this year. His defense seems solid and he should pull down a ton of boards this year. Between Rausch and Hernandez if we can get 12 points per game I will be happy. Scoring is not these guys strong suit. 25 Walter Walsh PF Jr 6'11" 231 Mesa, AZ Walsh is the second low post backup on this team behind Lon Williams. His playing time will be scarce. Small Forwards 1 Russ Kim SF Sr 6' 7" 228 Duncan, AZ Kim is buried on in the depth charts. He plays very poor defense, so he won’t be playing much for me. 21 Robert Grundy SF Sr 6' 9" 252 Raton, NM It was a tough call, but Grundy gets the start for me this year. It was between him and the freshman, Valliere. They both have about equal defensive skills (Valliere actually just a bit better), and they both can score from the post, but the difference is that Grundy has a little jump shot as well right now. 5 Robert Valliere SF Fr 6' 7" 229 Vernal, UT Robert will likely see a ton of playing time and almost equally split up the minutes with Grundy at SF. ShottingGuards 41 Ward McGaha SG Sr 6' 5" 217 Woods Cross, UT Ward has started since I arrived on campus. I have never been in love with this kid, but somehow he sticks around in my starting lineup. The same goes for his senior season. 14 Maximo Lewis SG So 6' 6" 196 Las Vegas, NV Max is not a bad player, but he is last on the SG depth chart. 51 Brian James SG So 6' 4" 208 Las Vegas, NV Brian will start to see significant minutes this year, in preparation for him getting the start next season. Point Guards 3 Thomas Floyd PG Sr 6' 2" 202 Albuquerque, NM Thomas is a very capable PG and will be our backup at the point. 10 Albert Gouge PG Jr 6' 3" 187 Tomales, CA Gouge will serve as a SG backup this year. 42 Preston Thornton PG So 5'11" 186 Gilbert, AZ Preston retains his starting job at the point. His game is coming along very nicely. Last year he averaged 11 points and 2.7 assists per game as a true freshman This year, with some solid depth, especially in the back court, , we are going to pick up the pace of the game. We will run a 2-3 zone on defense and do a little pressing and trapping here and there. We will leave the big guys to cover their men, but double team on the outside. I think this should be a pretty fun team to watch play and come together over the course of the season. I think we should easily reach our goal of finishing with a 500 conference record, as long as we get some kind of points from the paint.

November 16, 1952
Sam Houston (0-0) at Arizona (0-0) This is my third year with Arizona, and we have yet to lose on opening day. Today we take the game 62-55. Hernandez starts the season off on a good foot with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Thornton also scored 14 for us. Code:
November 22, 1952 Arizona (1-0) at Long Island (1-0) We win our first road contest of the year as well, 65-59. Today it was Rausch who got the job down in the paint. He scored 15 points and pulled in 11 rebounds. Thornton added 11 with 7 assists and McGaha had 14. True freshman SF, Robert Valliere had a nice game contributing 8 points off the bench in just 10 minutes. Code:
Some crazy people out there voted us into the Top 25 polls, at #19! We are currently ranked high than Bethune-Cookman and Fordham! November 27, 1952 #19 Arizona (2-0) at Notre Dame (2-0) There goes our national ranking. We drop this game 74-67 and fall to 2-1 on the young season. Our two big guys combined for just 6 points, and when that happens we will struggle. Grundy and Thornton led the team with a dozen each. Code:
November 30, 1952 Texas Tech (1-0) at #19 Arizona (2-1) We drop our second straight game, and this one was at home. 74-66 was the final score. We are starting to give up way more points than I want. Thonrton led the team in scoring with a 20 point night along with 6 assists and Hernandez rebounded with a solid game, scoring 14 and pulling in 9 rebounds. Code:
November Recruiting. We did not sign anyone, but we didn’t lose anyone either. We are heavily recruiting 2 more Power Forwards and a Point Guard. The PG is the best of the bunch but seems like a long shot to land.

December 5, 1952
Arizona (2-2) at Texas A&M (1-2) We snap our little losing streak with a solid 71-62 road victory today. Thornton was our leading scorer with 16, but we had 4 players score in double figures for us. Hernandez put up 11 along with 10 rebounds. Code:
December 9, 1952 Tennessee Tech (2-4) at Arizona (3-2) We pick up our second straight win with a 75-63 final score today. Our two big men both had brilliant games. Hernandez scored 13 and also had 13 rebounds. Rausch equaled him with 13 rebounds of his own, and also scored 11 points. Our backup center, Lon Williams came off the bench to score 11 as well. Code:
December 14, 1952 Arizona (4-2) at Nebraska (0-5) I thought this might be a dangerous game coming in, and we had to battle to pull this one out. We barely did, 76-70. Thornton was huge, coming up with 24 points to lead all scorers. McGaha had a fine game as well with 18. Code:
December 18, 1952 Arizona (5-2) at Louisville (6-2) We pick up a very nice road win against a decent Louisville team today. The final was 81-67, a very decisive victory. Thornton led the team with 19 points and also had 7 assists. McGaha and Grundy both scored in double figures and our two big men both grabbed double digit rebounds. Code:
December 22, 1952 Boston College (4-4) at Arizona (6-2) We find a way to win this one at home, 63-61, but the game was in doubt until the final seconds. McGaha hit the game winner and finished with 12 points. Thornton fouled out of this one, but our backup, Tom Floyd played well and scored 10. Code:
December 27, 1952 Seton Hall (3-6) at Arizona (7-2) Again we eek out a victory over a Big East team, and Seton Hall is traditionally one of the best of that conference. The final here was 66-63. Thornton led our team wit 13 points and 4 assists. Rausch had a double double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Code:
December Recruiting. We landed one new recruit this month. PF Andrew Amaral is from Lake Havasu City, AZ. He is a 3 star recruit and ranked #98 in the West Region. Honestly, he is not quite my type of player but with 5 scholarships we are trying to fill them with some role players as well. Code:
Bad news on the academic front. Our depth just took a big blow as PG Floyd and PG Gouge are both put on academic suspension for the next month. This means that SG Brian James will be seeing a lot of time backing up two positions. Max Lewis may also get some chances now.

January 1, 1953
Arizona (8-2) at Oregon (3-5) We get beat by 11 in our conference opener. The final score was 80-69. McGaha led our team with 12 points while Thornton and Grundy both scored 10. Code:
January 3, 1953 Arizona (8-3) at Oregon State (5-6) Our road trip to Oregon this year was a disaster as we drop both games up there. We lose today 80-71. Thornton had a great game with 23 points and 6 assists. Grundy, Rausch and Hernandez all scored in double figures as well, but the defense was bad, and we are really lacking depth. Code:
January 8, 1953 Oregon State (6-6) at Arizona (8-4) Brian James will miss at least this game with a minor injury. That means our depth at both guard spots is Max Lewis and that is it. It might have cost us this game as we lose 71-61 and start out the conference schedule in a 0-3 hole. Thornton had 14 to lead the team. Code:
January 10, 1053 Oregon (5-6) at Arizona (8-5) James is back in the rotation, but not at 100%. We finally break our losing streak and pick up our first conference win of the year, 73-66. Thornton scored 15 to lead the team today. McGaha added 12 and Hernandez and Valliere both scored 10. Code:
January 15, 1953 Washington State (10-2) at Arizona (9-5) We get clobbered at home today against a very solid squad, 79-62. Thornton scored 18 today but he let his man scorch him for 27. Code:
January 17, 1953 Washington (8-6) at Arizona (9-6) We get embarrassed at home today, 94-53. The season started out great, but once we hit the conference schedule, we have been getting killed. Thornton led the team again today, but was held in check with 12 points. Code:
January 22, 1953 Arizona (9-7) at Washington State (12-2) This one was bound to be ugly. We get crushed, 95-63. Thornton scored 18 and Hernandez had 10. Code:
January 24, 1953 Arizona (9-8) at Washington (9-7) We actually were competitive in this one, but we still lose, 65-60. We are now 1-7 in the conference. McGaha had 15 and Thornton was held to 9. Code:
January 31, 1953 Arizona State (11-7) at Arizona (9-9) We save some face this year by taking the first game again our in state rival, 70-68. I can only hope this is the start of a mini-run and a chance to get close to 500 on the year. Thornton was awesome tonight, scoring 26 points to lead all scorers. McGaha added 12. Code:
January Recruiting. No new recruits this month, but we are targeting a 2 Point guards and a center with our last two scholarships. Both of our guys are back from suspension for the month of February.
