There was a guy named Ben Gay that was briefly in Browns camp, but couldn't cut it. Apparently, he was a stronger, faster Bo Jackson clone in high school but is/was such a head case that he could not make it as a professional.

(And that is a shame for a guy whose name was custom made for an endorsement).

Ben Gay stories aside--I don't think that Quik is going there with this puzzle.

Just doesn't seem his style, really.

Nobody has hit on this one, yet.

Did the movie Almost Famous have anything to do with San Francisco?

(I'm starting to reach here).

Some interesting famous San Franciscians I googled:

Jerry Garcia
William Randolph Hearst

Could we be going for Jeff Garcia or Garrison Hearst here? Interestingly both players also played for the 49ers.

Transitive participle male, younger. - Eli Manning
(right church, wrong pew - Q)

The only Mannning other than Peyton or Eli currently in the NFL is Ricky Manning.

Of course if this isn't limited to current NFL players, and the Manning family is the church, then that would leave us with Cooper (who is Archie's OLDEST son) or Archie himself. We've already got Peyton, and it would be strange for Quik to double the player and not the clue.

Things I associate with San Francisco:

Golden Gate Bridge, Rice-a-roni, "frisco" burgers, cable cars/trolleys, hills, alcatraz/the rock (isn't it in the SF bay?), Candlestick park.

Thinking out loud here...

It says "Hammer's co-star"... just "hammer", as opposed to "a hammer" or "the hammer". That suggests a name. Reaching here, but maybe MC Hammer? Is there anyone with a name along the lines of McCostar or McSidekick (you get the drift).

"Best in Show" champion.

From the Westminster Kennell Club website (sorry, but I don't know of too many people that would recall this off the top of their head, so I confess to websearching. So sue me)

The 2004 Best In Show was awarded
to "Ch Darbydale's All Rise Pouchcove,"
a.k.a "Josh," a Newfoundland

Any Darby's? Maybe a Josh Darby or a Dale Darby?

Or perhaps Hammerin' Hank Aaron?

MC Hammer is probably more likely. Don't know who is "co-star" would have been.

(Edit: Yeah, I think that's it. There are no "Holly"s in the NFL.)

Another "right church, wrong pew" deal. I intended this to be a full, two-part clue... not exclusively a "they have the same name" reference like a few others are.

Along the same lines:

Hmm...I know Quik said there were some unintended entries earlier...I did some digging (ok, google), and there is also a Bethel College & Seminary in St. Paul (http://www.bethel.edu/)....maybe Bethel Johnson.

These are the Bryants in the NFL according to nfl.com. Need to see who is a Junior, or 2nd or 3rd or something similar to that it would appear. Back to work, I will check this out soon if no one else hits it.

Anyone notice "Best in Show" is in quotes? This implies the mockumentary is the reference to look at. In the movie, Eugene Levy's dog ends up winning. The dog's name is "Winky", which seems to indicate this is a reference to Chris Weinke, Panther QB.

Yeah, that's how we got Fleck earlier (Levy's character is Gerry Fleck). But since Fleck isn't right Weinke sounds good to me...

If that's the case, then the kid is Emmanuel Lewis, which could in turn translate to Bert Emmanuel, I think. (is he still in the league?)

I suggested Ricky Watters for this but it looks like I was wrong. Any other beverage-oriented names that might work here?

There are a lot of pitchers who are known for pitching inside. It seems sort of nebulous and vague if that is the meaning. I've taken the approach that pitcher means container, as in pitcher of beer. The Ricky Watters guess may not have been too far off base (no pun intended).

Dola, there was a old comic (late 1800's) with a bald headed kid with big ears. I had no clue what his name was, so I did a google on it (is that legal?) and got a name, Mickey Dugan. There has to be a Dugan in the NFL.
