1.5 Cliff Huxtable - Dad
Gotta go with Cliff, one of the funniest and most likeable dads in TV history. My favorite Cliff moment is in the first episode where he teaches Theo how to live like a regular person, using monopoly money as an example.

I thought Cliff might fall to me at #7. Damn.
I'm now in "trade down for more picks" mode.

Was that scene really in the first Cosby Show episode? Truly a memorable one.
And I fully agree on Archie being a much more memorable dad than Lucy was a mom. |

1.6 Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox) - Brother
Alex epitomized the Reagan era and sprung Michael J. Fox onto the big screen in the Back to the Future movies. It's sort of fitting that as the Cosby Show closes out with pick 1.5, Family Ties follows with pick 1.6. |

Just a heads up - I woke up feeling really ill this morning. I'm at work, but probably going home. If I'm unavailable my brother, lordscarlet, will be trying to make picks for me.

After the first four picks, I was excited to see Dr. Huxtable and Alex Keaton still on the board. I was even wondering if I'd get really lucky and wind up with both.
Screw you guys.

Archie Bunker is definately a dad and cartman vaults into the early lead.
That totally would have been my pick. Talk about a guy who changed the genre of TV. |

I think that at the end of the draft, bsak should assign everyone a grade for how quickly they picked. Voters could choose to factor that into their choices if they wanted to.
Might motivate us to move a little quicker and send a few lists.

I think there should be punishing auto-picks. Like one of the Cavemen from that show or something equally horrible.

I normally put together a google spreadsheet of the picks, but I don't know if I will have time.
If I copy the format to a new sheet (which will do make multiple style lists based on a single data entry -- by category, by draft order, etc) would someone want to keep it up to date?

Homer would have been my 1.1 -- the most iconic TV dad of the last 15 years.
I'm still surprised by the disdain for the Lucy pick. Maybe I simply watched it more growing up than others did. |

Good pick Lathum. Was on my short list for 1.12/1.13, but didn't think it would make it there.

I would imagine that is because there is no family in Seinfeld. But, it appears others think it was a good pick. I'm not sure how it fits in to a "TV Family" draft, though. I guess it depends on your interpretation. I already argued with Wade about that one.

It's very easy. Do you have a google docs account? If so, post it here or PM me. If not, send me an email address for me to send it to and it should let you edit it from that. I put in the data up to now. It can be embedded in the first post, if you like. That's what I do when I run a draft, but you certainly don't have to. For those that want to view it: FOFC TV Family Draft - Google Docs

IMO this statement makes no sense. A. Jerry's and Georges parents are very central players in the show. B. The catergory was best friend, last time I checked most peoples best friend isn't in their family. I can't really think of another best friend that is more relevant from a more popular show. |

A. I think they were side characters at best. The show was not about their family. However, I can see the justification. B. Yes, but it is the "Television Family" draft. I think I will be the only one that feels this way, so it is not really worth arguing. I can concede that you can come up with logic to justify it, I just don't agree. In the end I doubt it will make a huge impact on my voting, but I hope it isn't a gateway into even looser interpretations.

I agree LS. I think it's a decent pick, but not a first rounder. Maybe the "television family" part of the draft is not as central as I interpreted.

I would think that he is narrowing the choices down to those Sitcoms that are about a family (e.g. Family Ties) although, I didn't take the draft to be that narrow in scope.

IMO the family part isn't as central. I'm not sure how you can say the guys best friend from arguably that greatest sitcom ever isn't a first round pick, but thats the point of these things. Quote:
If it is that narrow a scope it will be virtualy impossible to find enough people from "family" sitcoms. |

I can think of a ton of "best friend" types who were much more a part of the family than George was part of Jerry's family. The Fonz, for instance, was practically part of the Cunningham family.

Well it says "Television Family" draft. I would've never considered George for that reason. That doesn't mean it's not a good pick. Some people will reward you. Some people will punish you. I certainly pushed boundaries in previous drafts, like my Gilgamesh pick in the history draft.
And I disagree that it will be virtually impossible with that scope. There have been a ton of family sitcoms over the years.

If you want to get technical, the rules were best friend (of the lead character) so, The Fonz would be a horrible choice for that category because Happy Days didn't have a lead character and if anyone was the lead in Happy Days, it was the Fonz. I'm just playing Devil's Advocate... I am in no way thinking The Fonz was a bad choice as the lead in Happy Days was the Cunningham family and The Fonz was the best friend to them and in the most technical interpretation of the rule, Jerry is the lead of Seinfeld and George is his best friend. Aren't drafts fun.

I don't quite get that. Richie was clearly the lead character in Happy Days.
Sure, Fonzie eventually ended up stealing the show, but it was Richie's show he was stealing.
