Coaching Movement

Illinois fired their coach, Scottie Castaneda. He was their coach for 7 years and has just 1 NCAA appearance to show for it. Illinois brings in Tim Sink, formerly a Grambling and Western Michigan assistant (among other teams). This will be his first head coaching job. He is known for his decent recruiting and hard nosed defensive style. He is decent at judging talent, but runs a miserable offense.

St. Joseph’s fired their coach, Tony Cancellor. He Took them to the Elite 8 in 1938, then the Sweet Sixteen in 1937, then the 1st round in 1940 and then the NIT’s in 1941. Not a good trend and he was fired for it. They bring in Rob Barkslee from Texas Southern. Rob also was the head coach at other schools like Kentucky and Pennsylvania. He brings a 208-165 record. He has 6 NCAA appearances and an Elite Eight.

Another first time champion this past season. Nobody wants to separate themselves from the pack and be the top dog. Anyway, on to recruiting where we have nine 5 star recruits this year. Three of them have declared for the draft, and another 3 have already committed to schools:

#3 PF Jonathan Gilmore, from Torrington, CT has committed to Fordham.
#4 SG Osmond Coxhead, from Denton, UK, has committed to Bethune-Cookman.
#6 SF Angelo smith, from Overton, NV has committed to Sacramento State.

And the other three are still deciding:

#2 PG Keith Frampton, from Jonesville, LA: Bethune
#5 C Frances Klinger, from West Carrollton, OH: Duquesne, St. Bonnie
#7 PG David Reis, from Carbondale, CO: Bethune

He is a 2 year starter and averaged 12 points and 6.8 assists this year. Tonight he scored 19 to pace Bethune. Northern Arizona did not have that may scoring threat, but they did have SF Hayden Hendon. Hayden is a Junior and was ranked #2 overall in 1939. He has started every game in his career and tonight he went for an incredible 32 points. He helped Northern Arizona to the 87-76 victory.

In game 2, Drake continued its magical run by feeding the ball to their SF, Mervin Vargas. Vargas is a Senior and was ranked #17 back in 1938. He is a 3 year starter and led the Drake team with 22 points. PF Joshua Castello also had a monster game with 16 points and 15 boards. Josh is a Senior and was ranked #18 in 1937. Duquesne had a great performance from freshman Adrian Montgomery, ranked #5 in 1940. He scored 15, but it was not enough as Drake wins 69-61.

In the Finals, Hendon had another fine game for Northern Arizona with 15 points. PF Cliff Harrelson and bench player SG Cristobal Stowell each scored 10. Drake countered with SG James Tucker who scored 11 and had 11 rebounds as well. They also had 10 points each from C Dan Smart and backup SG David Joplin. The difference was Drake’s PG Michael Moffitt, a true freshman. He led the team with 13 points, 3 assists and 6 boards, as well as the game winner with less than 30 seconds left. Drake takes it 65-64 and are the NCAA Champs!

Luna is just a Junior and will be returning for his senior season. He is a three year starter and this year scored 16.2 points per game and had 10.8 rebounds per game.

Moffiitt took Drake to a National Championship and hit the game winning shot. Enough said.

Teets is one of the best coaches in the National and along with a National Title, this award solidifies his spot in the coaching universe. In fact, Teets is the winningest coach in the nation with 325 wins and only 1217 losses in his tenure with Duquesne, Florida Atlantic and Akron. He has been with Duquesne for 10 years now.

So Drake finally gets a title after being one of the top teams the last few years. They finally are able to punctuate their nice run as of late. But, if they want to keep it up, they need to capitalize on the title in the recruiting process. This year we have nine 5 star prospects and 3 of them have declared for the draft. That leaves only 6 players for the top teams to fight over. One of them has already committed, and Drake wrapped him up:

#7 SG Justin Walsh, from East Bridgewater, MA has committed to Drake.

That leaves 5 guys still undecided:

#1 SF Jerald Purcell, from Sacramento, CA: Drake
#2 PF Mark Waddle, from Poultney, VT: Brown, Wichita State, St. Bonnie (He is a JUCO, you might remember him not qualifying a couple years back.)
#4 SF Lucius Hughs, from Newark, DE: Arkansas State
#5 PF Reed Gouge, from Campbellsport, WI: St. Bonnie
#8 PF Dan Krawczyk, from Saxonburg, PA: St. Bonnie, Brown, Duquesne

Although we have a bunch of former champs, this year, this region is not a tough one.

First Round Highlights

One of the most prestigious teams in the country fell flat on their face today. #1 Bethune lost to #16 seed Oral Roberts in the first round! The final score was 75-73.

The other #1 seeds survived, all with ease.

All four #2 seeds advanced, which means Penn State is gone already.

We also lost a #3 seed in this round. #14 Hofstra beat #3 Brown.

The #4 seeds all advanced pretty easily as well.

Other notable to advance: #8 Coppin State, #12 Cal State Northridge, #7 Troy State, #7 Georgia State, #6 Grambling, #5 Penn, #7 Delaware State

Second Round Highlights

We lost another #1 seed this round. #8 Navy beat Seton Hall in round 1 and then knocked off #1 Duquesne in this round. That leaves us with just two #1 seeds in the Sweet Sixteen.

We also lost our first #2 seed in this round. #2 Sacramento State was upset by #7 Georgia State.

All three of the remaining 3 seeds advanced in this round.

We started this round with all four #4 seeds, and suddenly we are down to just one of them: St. Bonaventure in the Midwest bracket. In the West, #12 Cal State Northridge beat #4 Nicholls State. In the South, #5 Princeton beat #4 Norfolk State and in the East, #5 Penn beat #4 South Carolina State.

Other notables to advance: #16 Oral Roberts, #11 Chicago State

Final Four

San Francisco had a down year, but settled for the NIT title with a win over Gonzaga.

The matchups

#1 Northern Arizona vs. #2 Santa Clara
#7 Georgia State vs. #2 Drake

Three of these teams are former champs, with Drake being the defending champ. This is also Georgia State’s third trip to the Final Four, although they have yet to win it all.

Northern Arizona had a tough time scoring against the Santa Clara defense. Sophomore SF San Moreau, a #5 overall recruit in 1941 scored a team high 13 points for Northern Arizona. Santa Clara had not only the defense but a killer offense going for them. It was led by Senior C Jaime Luna. Luna was the #23 overall recruit in 1938, and the National Freshman of the year in 1940. He was also last year’s National Player of the year! He went crazy for 25 points and 14 rebounds as Santa Clara crushed N. Arizona 81-63.

In game 2, Drake survived a pair of double doubles by Georgia State players PF Charles Crissman and SF Jose Helms. Helms is a junior and tied a game high with 17 points along with 11 rebounds. But Drake had 4 players score in double figures and are determined to defend their title. They were led by PG Mike Moffitt, now a sophomore. He was ranked #8 overall in 1941 and had a huge impact last year if you recall. He led the team with 17 points and SF Milton McGlothlin added 16 as Drake wins 72-64.

Drake fell one game short of winning back to back titles, something only Grambling has been able to do. The great Santa Clara defense was up to the task, shutting two of the Drake starters out of the scoring column. C Jamie Luna had another great game for Santa Clara with 21 points and 9 boards. SF Will Roll also added in 16 points and 10 boards. Santa Clara takes the game, 75-62 and wins their second National Title!

What a career for Luna. Back to back Final Fours, back to back National Player of the Year Awards, Freshman of the year and a National Title. Could he be the greatest player in NCAA history?

Ken Turner was not highly regarded in recruiting last year. He was ranked just #382. He started every game and scored 20 points and grabbed 6 boards per game.

Scheel has been the only head coach in Santa Clara history, and after winning his second National Title, he solidifies his standing as a top coach with a National Coach of the Year Award. Scheel is the 14th winningest coach in NCAA history and has only failed to reach a post season tournament once, and that was 1930, the first year of exitance for the NCAA. Amazing.

The Recruiting rankings have been released:

Code:

UTEP SF Richard Whetstone ** 239. Penn State SF Leonard Griffin ** 279. Illinois SF Pedro Pfaff * 310. Massachusetts PF Ralph Harrington *

A bit of a surprise here as Wichita State grabbed the top 2 recruits in the country and finished 3rd.

Drake hauled in #8, #25, #108, #7

Northern Arizona got #11, 36, 77, 20

Wichita State had just those 2 recruits.

Not a single change in the 5 star cnferences this year, so I won’t repeat them like I normally do.

Here are some notables:

Big East 3
Big Ten 2
WAC 2

Coaching Changes

The biggest news here is that Duquesne’s head coach, Ken Teets has retired as the all time leader in career victories! Duquesne will not be able to get a coach this great, but they almost did! They stole Fordham coach Chris Martinez right out from under a perennial #1 seed’s nose! Chris has a 311-157 career coaching record and a National Championship! He also has countless NCAA appearances. Duquesne may not miss a beat with him.

Fordham had to find a replacement and they made a decent choice. They got Gary Moua from Chicago State. Gary got Chicago State to the Sweet Sixteen last year. He has a 239-199 career record. He has only 3 NCAA appearances, but a bunch of NIT appearances with some mediocre team like Buffalo and Jacksonville. He also was the head coach at UCLA and got them to where they are now.

Iowa made a coaching change, and a pretty darn good one. James Coker has been all over the country as an assistant coach, most recently with Pennsylvania. He is considered one of the top defensive minds in the country (rated 100). He helped get Penn to the Sweet Sixteen last year and was also a part of a Sweet Sixteen Bethune coaching squad.

So Ken Teets retires, and he is arguably the best coach in the history of the NCAA so far. A National Title, an NIT Title, and a coach of the year award top his resume. He is third all time in winning percentage with a 0.745.

Glad to have a good coach removed from Chicago State so the Illini can hopefully elevate their standing in the home state. But a little dismayed to hear that Iowa brought in some talent. Based on the recruits I have seen come in the last three years I hope our guy is a hardcourt Belicheck when it comes to coaching/defense.

Yeah two 5 star recruits from Vermont in 14 years! Took Waddles a couple tries but with him and #1 recruit Jerald Purcell Witchita State should be in for a good future. I'm sure Shaplowsky loves this.

Now only if UMass could recruit a basketball player.

The Brackets!

West
1 Northern Arizona
2 Arkansas State
3 Santa Clara
4 Norfolk State
9 Denver
5 Washington
7 Penn State
6 Cal State Northridge

Very impressive bracket of teams.

Midwest
1 Drake
2 St. Joseph’s
3 Loyola Marymount
4 Southern Utah
9 Penn
13 St. Louis
5 Sacramento State
7 Iowa
6 New Mexico State

Some good teams, but I think it will be a surprise if Drake does not blow through this bracket.

South
1 Bethune-Cookman
2 Georgia State
3 Air Force
4 St. Mary’s
8 Troy State
9 IUPUI
6 Delaware State

Weaker than average bracket

East
1 Brown
2 Coppin State
3 UMKC
4 Wyoming
5 Duquesne
7 Fordham
14 Florida

Some big names, but overall, not incredibly strong. Look for Duquesne to come out of this bracket.

rjolley - Both Penn State and Iowa came out of nowhere with RPI's in the 20's and gaudy regular season records. The conference may finally get some respect!

First Round Highlights

All of the #1 seeds advanced easily into the second round.

We had three of our #2 seeds advance, but #15 Fairfield knocked off #2 Coppin State in the East Region, 76-67.

We lost two #2 seeds in this round as well! #14 George Mason beat #3 Santa Clara in the West, and again in the East we had a big upset as #14 Florida beat #3 UMKC.

The four seeds had the same success as the 2 seeds in this round. We only lost one of them when #13 Maryland beat #4 St. Mary’s in the South Bracket.

Other notable to advance: #9 Denver, #6 Cal State Northridge, #9 Penn, #5 Sacramento State, #6 New Mexico State, #8 Troy State, #5 Nicholls State, #6 Delaware State, $5 Duquesne, #7 Fordham

Penn State and Iowa were both knocked out in the first round.

Second Round Highlights

Sweet Sixteen Highlights

The #2 seeds started falling today. In fact, only #1 Drake in the Midwest remains. #12 Portland continues its magical run by knocking off #1 Northern Arizona in the West. They will face #10 Indiana State in a battle of double digit seeds for a trip to the Final Four.

In the Midwest, Drake survived and will face #2 St. Joseph’s in a #1/#2 showdown.

In the South, #8 Troy State advanced over #13 Maryland. They will face #7 Princeton, who were able to beat #6 Delaware State.

Finally, in the East, #5 Duquesne knocked off #1 seed Brown to advance. #6 Columbia will face them after beating #7 Fordham.

Elite Eight Highlights

In the West, #10 Indiana State won the battle of the Cinderellas over #12 Portland to advance to the Final Four.

In the Midwest, our only #1 seed, Drake beat the 2 seed, St. Joseph’s to advance.

In the South, another high seed advances as #8 Troy State beats #7 Princeton.

Finally in the East, #5 Duquesne is no surprise as they return to the final four after taking care of #6 Columbia.

Final Four

In the NIT, San Francisco beat UNLV for the Title.

The matchups

#10 Indiana State vs. #8 Troy State
#1 Drake vs. #5 Duquesne

It would seem game 1 will determine who gets crushed in the finals….

Game 1 was a defensive affair, but two players stood out. For Troy State, SG Harley Pinada, a Junior and ranked #15 overall in 1941 led his team with 19 points. For Indiana State, SF Al Holden, a senior and ranked #66 overall in 1940, did a little bit better with 21 points and 12 rebounds. That little bit more gave Indiana State just a little more on the scoreboard and a 66-63 victory.

Game 2 was supposed to be a battle. Duquesne is always great and Drake is in their 3rd consecutive Final Four. The game turned out differently though as Duquesne just ran Drake right out of the gym. Junior SG Adrian Montgomery, who is leaving after this year for the draft scored 20 to lead the team. Junior C Chris Funke, ranked #16 overall in 1941, added 19. Drake had a great performance from Senior C Nestor Reed, ranked #237 in 1939. He scored 19 points and grabbed 10 boards in the losing cause. Duquesne wins big, 90-65.

Duquesne, looking for their second title in 6 seasons had a great gameplan and shut down the starters for Indiana State. But they didn’t count on little used SG, Sophomore John Hacker, who was ranked just #1118 in 1941. John scored 13 points in 17 minutes off the bench, all in the second half to keep Indiana State in the game. Duquesne was just a little too much today though. Guards Adrian Montgomery and Edward Densmore, both leaving college after this year paced Duqesne with 13 points each and gave Duquesne the title with a narrow 60-58 victory!

Coaching Changes

Big news this year! UMASS has hired away Arkansas State’s Head Coach of 11 years, Mason Morgan. Mason won a title with them in 1936 and has been to the NCAA tournament every year with Arkansas State. Now he will try to bring UMASS to that level of play.

Arkansas State went out and hired the Washington head coach, Tony Harness. Tony has a 279-148 record as a head coach and took Washington to the NCAAs every year he was there, including an elite Eight appearance.

Illinois fired their head coach after 3 mediocre years and hired Stony Brook assistant Tyrell Pope. This will be Pope’s first head coaching job.

LaSalle fired their coach after just reaching the NCAA tourney once in the last three years and not winning a single game. They hire Stony Brook’s head coach, Michale Rodriguez. He has a 223-231 record as a head coach with mostly Cleveland State.

Nicholls State head coach was hired away by Alabama A&M. Nicholls State replaces him with Clayton Ross, Maryland’s head coach. He brought Maryland to the Sweet 16 last year and has a 113-77 career record.

Northern Arizona’s Kelly Twomey retired! Northern Arizona went and hired Georgia State’s head coach Saul Anderson. Saul has a 312-178 career record and a Final Four appearance 2 years ago.

Penn State saw their coach hired away. They replaced him with Quincy Wood, a Wyoming assistant. This will be Wood’s first head coaching job.

UTEP fired their coach, Chris Edington and hired a St. Joseph’s assistant! Cameron Engle is just 53-97 as a head coach, but as part of St. Joseph’s staff for the last 3 years, he helped them reach 2 Elite eights.

So, Kelly Twomey has retired from Northern Arizona. He took the job in 1934 after starting his job in Lafayette. He won a Championship and was in 3 other Final Fours with Arizona during his career. He retired with a 374-143 record, the most wins in NCAA history right now. He was named Conference Coach of the Year 5 times in his career. He is 5th on the all time winning percentage list with 0.723. He has won 8 conference titles. He also recruited and coached 3 All Americans in his career. The NCAA will miss this legend.

This year’s crop of high schoolers are slim. Only eight 5 star recruits this season. Four of them have already declared for the draft. That leaves four of them for college, and none have declared a school yet.

#3 PF Robert Murray, from Canton, OH: Bethune
#5 SF Randolph Jarman, from Salt Lake City, UT: Sac State
#7 SF Pedro Bryan, from Charleston, SC: Drake
#8 PF Maynard Hicks, from Albuquerque, NM: Bethune, Drake

Hopefully the new coach can help the Miners, and it's good to see that they had a half-way decent recruiting class. Maybe they can put together a second winning season soon...

Final Four

St. Joseph’s wins the NIT Title by beating Evansville.

The Match Ups

#4 South Carolina State vs. #1 Arkansas State
#2 Loyola Marymount vs. #1 Brown

In Game 1, C Vitali Fedorov single handidly won this game for South Carolina State. In grabbing 20 rebounds in the game, he never allowed Arkansas State to get any second chance points. He finished with 12 points and 20 boards. Dale Beach also added 17 points in the 70-61 victory.

In Game 2, it was SF Henry Parent, a true freshman for Brown, and ranked #5 overall last year, who led the team to a victory. He scored a game high 23 points and also grabbed 7 boards from the SF spot. The defense held Loyola in check all game and Brown wins 72-64.

In the Finals, Vitali could not get anything going inside, although he did finish with 11 boards. Once again it was super freshman, Henry Parent who led the team to victory. He scored a game high 24 points for Brown and led them to an easy 85-66 victory and their first ever National Championship, thanks to a true freshman….and he will be back next year!

Brackets

West
1 Loyola Marymount
2 Oakland
3 New Mexico State
4 Hawaii
5 Wichita State
11 Delaware State

Not particularly strong, but a bunch of good teams who have never made a deep run have a good shot this year.

Mid West
1 Drake
2 IUPUI
3 Arkansas State
4 St. Mary’s
9 Sacramento State
15 Washington
11 Norfolk State

Drake is the team to beat.

South
1 Northern Arizona
2 St. Bonaventure
3 Valparaiso
4 Santa Clara
12 Fordham
7 Coppin State
10 Grambling
6 South Alabama

Maybe a new region can get Northern Arizona back to the Final Four.

East
1 Duquesne
2 Brown
3 Bethune
4 Air Force
10 Troy State
14 Penn State
6 Wyoming
11 Nicholls State

This is a stacked bracket, specifically, the top 3 teams are easily the in the top 5 programs of recent memory.
