Kiper's newest 1st round mock has the Cowboys selecting WR Chad Jackson out of Florida. Not sure about that pick as the Cowboys have more pressing needs.

I liked his previous mock as he had the 'boys picking Jimmy Williams out of V. Tech. He can play corner or safety, which is what the Cowboys need.

I wouldn't even be concerned with the 3 base, 2 incentives deal. With Henderson, Davenport, and Fisher all going to be FAs in a few days (or weeks at this pace), I think he's worth the risk. If he's not able to perform close to the level he did before, $2 or $3 mill is not a HUGE problem. If he does, the Packers will have a chance to lock him up for a few more years. Ahman wants to be a Packer. This gives both sides a "feeler" year. Even though he'll be 30 next year, if he proves he's "back", someone will give him a decent short-term contract, especially if '07 is uncapped. I'll just be interested to see what the Packers do now with the rest of the RBs, or if they draft somebody like LenDale White. Despite his injury, I think Davenport might get some good offers and be gone. Hopefully they can keep Fisher and Henderson.

Willie McGinest has been cut.

Willie McGinest - LB - NE - Mar. 9 - 8:35 am et
The Patriots have decided to release 12-year veteran linebacker Willie McGinest.
There is still a decent chance McGinest will return and there was no way he was coming back with an $8.3 million cap figure. The Browns, Chargers, and Cowboys are expected to show interest. Mar. 9 - 8:35 am et

Expected, I think. There was an article in the Globe a few days ago where he said he expected to get cut. It will be interesting to see where he ends up. Although compared to the teams on that list, I have to think he'll believe his best chance to win more championships is in NE.

My main concern is that they resign Adam V. asap.

What's going to happen is the Patriots sign Vanderjagt instead who proceeds to kick the game winning field goal in a playoff game vs. the Colts.

Only problem with that scenario is the reality -

New England's Vanderjagt is up to attempt a 45 yard field goat. What's this? Vanderjagt has came out wearing an AFC champion hat instead of a helmet and pointing to the Colt's bench laughing, he lines up for the kick - wide right... the Colts are your AFC champions.

Maybe the Colts have a secret agreement with Vanderjagt and Vinatieri lined up where they switch teams.

ESPN is saying a deal is in place to trade Daunte Culpepper and will be announced tomorrow. They don't know where he is going except that it is not to Oakland, although Oakland is considering tonight whether to beat the current offer.

Browns agree with offensive linemen Bentley, Shaffer

With money to spend and holes to fill, the Cleveland Browns struck quickly in free agency Saturday, reaching agreements with a pair of high-profile unrestricted free agents who will dramatically alter the landscape of the team's offensive line unit.

The Browns have signed center LeCharles Bentley of New Orleans, the top-ranked player overall in ESPN.com's ratings of unrestricted free agents. The team also reached an agreement in principle with Atlanta Falcons left offensive tackle Kevin Shaffer, ESPN.com's 26th-rated free agent.

Bentley's contract is for six years at $36 million, and includes $12.5 million in guarantees. While some details remain to be worked out on Shaffer's contract, it will be a seven-year deal worth more than $5 million annually.

Cleveland officials had suggested as the free agency signing period approached that they would be very active, and early on, in addressing key needs. The Browns had about $20 million in salary cap room even before the extension to the collective bargaining agreement added $7.5 million more per team. General manager Phil Savage and coach Romeo Crennel moved quickly in 2004 at the outset of free agency, and their Saturday forays will aid an offense that statistically ranked No. 26 in the league in 2005.

Landing the highly regarded Bentley is a huge acquisition for the Browns, who wanted more bulk and power on the interior of their offensive line. The signing represents a homecoming for Bentley, who is a Cleveland native, attended that city's St. Ignatius High School, and is a longtime Browns fan.

It had been rumored for about two weeks that Bentley would sign with Philadelphia once the free agent market opened for business, but those reports proved erroneous.

Bentley, 26, was the Saints' second-round pick in the 2002 draft. He began his career at guard and then moved to center in 2004. He earned one Pro Bowl berth at each position and scouts leaguwide agree that his best football is still ahead of him. The former Ohio State standout is a mauler, the sort of road-grader blocker the Browns need. At 315 pounds, he can take on the NFL's biggest nose tackle and has the power to drive defenders off the line of scrimmage.

In four seasons with the Saints, he played in 57 games, all as a starter.

The intention of the Browns at left tackle was to re-sign L.J. Shelton, who started all 16 games in 2005, while playing on a one-year deal. But when they could not land an extension with Shelton, the Browns quickly turned to Shaffer, a four-year veteran.

Although he struggled against speed-rushers at times in 2005, Shaffer is an emerging pass protector, as former seventh-round choice who made himself a solid player through hard work. The former Tulsa star moved into the Falcons' starting lineup midway through the 2003 season. A very good technician, and a player who figures to keep improving, Shaffer has played in 53 games and started 39 of them.

ESPN.com's Michael Smith contributed to this report.

Word is the 49ers and Redskins are close to a deal that would send WR Brandon Lloyd to the Skins for a 3rd rounder this year and a 4th rounder in 2007.

Interesting... looks like the Browns are getting serious. With an updated O-Line and Jurevicius coming to town, they look to be taking some good steps to get out of their mediocrity.

The Vikings sign another NFC North kicker, Ryan Longwell.

The Ravens sign Trevor Pryce.

Ravens | Team lands Pryce
Sat, 11 Mar 2006 15:26:19 -0800
ESPN.com's John Clayton and Len Pasquarelli report the Baltimore Ravens have agreed to a five-year, $25 million contract with free agent DE Trevor Pryce (Broncos). Included in the deal for Pryce is $10 million of guarantees.

The Saints are really hot after Drew Brees which is interesting since they are the ones that have always been projected to draft Matt Leinart. It looks great if they are able to sign Brees and get some team that covets Leinart to trade up.

Apparently the Redskins do not believe in the draft. By trading their 3rd rounder this year, the Redskins have a 2nd, 5th, 2 6th, and a 7th round draft pick (they could get more via compensatory).

I'd be surprised if Vinatieri signs with another team. He'd certainly get a larger contract, but he gets a lot of endorsement money up here. Not to mention his contuing legacy in New England(which he may just not care about).

In the end though, I disagree with most Pats fans(it seems). He's just a kicker, they shouldn't break the bank to keep him.

Apparently there are rumors that Givens may resign with the Pats. That' be awesome but I can't see that coming to pass. The man deserves his pay day.

New England receiver David Givens, who played at Humble High School, had been scheduled to visit the Texans today but agreed to re-sign with the Patriots late Saturday.

His agent denies it.

I would be shocked if Seattle doesn't match any offer for Hutch. Seattle has plenty of cap room, and they have a strong desire to keep their OL intact.

I've heard that about McGinest as well. Is it really true? Would McGinest really make significantly more in endorsement money in Boston as opposed to, say, Phoenix or Detroit? It's pretty hard for me to believe.

The Vikes sign Chester Taylor as well this weekend:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2365156

He probably will be starting for them. I don't think he was brought in to be another RB to add to the 3 headed monster.

Browns get some more players:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2365425

Quote:
the Browns on Sunday added two more players, reaching an agreement with veteran defensive tackle Ted Washington and signing punter Dave Zastudil.

Not as big as Saturday's signings, but it seems Crennel and co are serious about signing players this off season.

I'm not sure the difference in endorsement income for McGinest would be large enough to make up the difference in salary.

Vinatieri is a different story I think. I see him in commercials more than Willie and I think the difference in salary is going to be less. I think the Pats are going to offer upwards of 2.5m a year, I don't see him getting much more than 3 from another team.

According to Profootballtalk, the Vikings have made a huge offer.

The Vikings have signed G Steve Hutchinson to an offer sheet worth $49 million over seven years, including $16 million in guaranteed money.
The deal has a huge cap number in the first year, which will discourage the Seahawks from matching it. They have seven days to do so. Seattle has to be regretting not placing the franchise tag on him in order to get draft pick compensation. This is the biggest contract for an interior lineman in league history by far. I was hoping the Bears could sign him to put him opposite of Muhammed.

It's now been picked up by Patriots Football Weekly and is on patriots.com FWIW. Still coming off that Houston Chronicle report, and PFW reports that calls to Stacy James in Media Relations were not returned. edit: digging @ Patsfan.com reveals that the report appears to have been false, although there has been contact b/w the Pats and Givens' agent.

So now they have Moss, Lloyd, Randle-El, and Patten? I don't think Patten thought this is what he'd be getting into (4th reciever again) when he signed on with Washington.

If he'd caught more than 22 balls for 217 yards in his half season as the #2 guy or made fewer incendiary remarks to the media, he might not be in this situation. Washington was expecting him to be a #2 guy.

That is absolutely insane overpayment for Randel El. At least that should net the steelers a 4th rounder compensatory next season.

The deal has a huge cap number in the first year, which will discourage the Seahawks from matching it. They have seven days to do so. Seattle has to be regretting not placing the franchise tag on him in order to get draft pick compensation. This is the biggest contract for an interior lineman in league history by far. I seriously don't care what the hit is in the first season. I have to believe that the Seahawks were willing to match any offer to Hutch when they went this road vs franchise tagging him, and they MUST step up and match this offer and take him off the market. Get it done guys, lock him up and keep the best left side in football together for a long time.

I agree, but I think it's obvious the Seahawks blew it on this one. The only reason I can think of that they didn't go the franchise route was to avoid pissing Hutch off, but they're going to pay for it big-time. No way he gets an offer sheet like this if he's franchised and the offering team has to surrender two #1 picks.

What a spectacular blunder from the Seahawks. Just spectacular.

There's a $590,000 difference between the two tags, right? All off-season long we've heard there's a lack of good guards in free agency, and the draft isn't exactly deep here. This was inevitable.

Hutch is getting his cash, which is great for him. He deserves a big payday. But you can't make a blunder like this when you're running a professional football team.
