I hate drafting first. Went with a second QB a little earlier than I had hoped but it's such a long time until my next pick I didn't want to end up with somebody like Flacco or Freeman in my lineup.

God- I hate all of the RB there right now as they seem like huge questions marks or reaches. There are the three "R" QBs which will not make it back to me but they all are a little bit of a reach. And then there's a couple of quality WRs out there I really like but we only start 3 or 4 and there are inconsistencies at that position which make values so much better later in the draft after locking in good production from other positions earlier on.

I do. But then I went and selected Julio Jones so that may tell you something about my value picking.

Although, it was a toss up between him and McFadden. I had typed McFadden in but spur of the moment deleted it and said fuck it, Julio Jones it is.

Makes me a little queasy to make this reach, but

3.2 QB Matt Ryan, ATL

I'd rather be picking at the middle of this round where I could get one of him, Romo, Rivers, or Vick (maybe Manning) but then it feels like a pretty steep drop off.

Unsure. If you are meaning value based drafting techniques period - no. If there is a specific tool - yes.

With the way our league is set up, each position gets pretty thin. Though I think TE is deeper than normal since we now only require 1 starter there.

I do think Manning was a reach at 20, but he likely would not have been available at 40.

What projections are you using for VBD and do you account for the scarcity difference between this and other leagues (the 20th QB being the baseline not the 10th, and all)?

Eli was the 6th highest scoring QB in the league last year and scored over 100 points more than the QBs in the 14-15 range. There were also 25 WRs that all scored within 100 points of each other, meaning WR is deep as hell while top-end QBs are the most consistent high-point scorers in the league.

This draft seems so odd. Ideally, you'd have picked one of the top QBs (Rodgers/Brees/Brady/Stafford/Newton?) and one RB near the top (Foster/Rice/McCoy/Johnson/Forte/McFadden) but no one has that and they were fairly evenly distributed in the 1st and 2nd rounds thru 2.7. Only one team has 2 of them and it's 2 RBs (Chief). Everyone else threw a dart at a TE or WR in the hope to make big points there.

So here's where I found myself:

Eli Manning could be in that group or he may not be in that group but I think he's more the top of the next group which includes Vick (injury concerns), Ryan (never been top 5), Rivers (stupid INTs), Romo (kindof stupid in general), PManning (huge injury ?).

On the RB side, there's MJD (holding out still with Jennings there), Matthews (hurt), Richardson (hurt), Lynch (completely inconsistent and likely suspended), Murray (has he even started half a season yet), Peterson (recovering), Charles (recovering), Turner (old), Jackson (injury prone)... I'd rather take some more fliers later on.

At WR, there are 3 really big names I think out there: Andre Johnson (injury) and Jordy Nelson (one season) fighting with Greg Jennings (concussoin) for catches in GB where they probably have enough for each to go around if not for the question marks. And I picked Roddy White as he's been Mr. Consistent even on the wrong side of 30. It was between him and Johnson for pick #1.

In a league where we start two QBs, I think it is foolish to go past the third round without at least one QB.

You nailed it, SI. Every RB I went to take, it was like... do I really want this guy?

Romo, even with his injury racked up the points last year. If he can stay upright, yes I definitely want him.

In the end, this is why I went with Johnson over a second tier QB or the last of the remaining top tier WRs. I just didn't see the dropoff at QB or WR that I saw with RBs.

At the point I was drafting, I felt there were two clear cut elite RBs left, in CJ and MJD. Everyone after, including McFadden, has serious question marks. MJD being in a holdout made my choice easy, once I decided to go RB.

There is going to be some quibbling around the edges, to be sure. I was looking at some McFadden reviews just as that pick came in and had decided on Fitz when the pick before me came in (d'oh) but I'd feel comfortable with McFadden this year. Yes, injury history, but he looks ok now and has the potential to be an actual 3 down back. That said, he wasn't on the board when it got to me so I didn't look much further

I actually like McFadden a lot--I had him on one of my fantasy teams the past two years, and when he wasn't hurt, he was very effective, especially at the start of last year. But he has been hurt too much too often to not heavily consider that in his value. I will be stunned if he plays in more than 13 games this year, and presume it will be closer to 10. I think the Raiders were incredibly dumb to let Michael Bush get away.

All that said, I do like McFadden and wish Danny good luck with him.

Yea, the one thing that I, and I'm sure many, run into is trying to find that balance of value vs. positional runs vs. team needs. I tend to try and stay away from the runs, but then sometimes I wait too long.

When Vick was injured last year my team went to shit. And here I sit in round 3 not wanting to take a QB yet.

Slight homer pick, but if he returns to form and doesn't have all of his TDs vultured, could be a steal.

If i didnt want to grab a QB I was going to take the risk with Charles. Pre-injury he was going to be a premier back. We'll see..
