Been out for a couple of days, looks like I missed a lot here. Fun read, Marmel. I would love to see updates on my Illini, although the snapshot you gave earlier doesn't leave too much room for hope right about now. Hopefully they are ready to find a coach who can help elevate them above the Iowa's and Penn State's of this NCAA world. Grambling and Northern Arizona, sadly, seem a long, long ways away. Weird typing that ...

Off Season Stuff
The East wins another High School All-Star Game, 79-75 Code:
End of Season Awards Code:
Edwards led his team to the Final Four as a Junior and has decided to enter the NBA draft. Landers is a red shirt freshman. In 1935 he was rated as a 3 star recruit and #70 overall. That red shirt year really benefited him. Charles Martin took a Prairie View team who has missed the tournament the last 2 years into the NCAA’s. The Recruiting Rankings have been released Code:
Northern Arizona lost a ton of Senior Starters in winning the title, but they reloaded with the following players: #1, #134, #7, #245. Harvard put together a solid class with #30, #21, and #4. Top Conferences: Atlantic 10 (#5 LaSalle, Fordham, St. Bonaventure, Duquesne) Atlantic Sun (#21 Georgia State) Big Sky (#1 Northern Arizona, #14 Sacramento State, #18 Eastern Michigan) Mid-Continent (#23 IUPUI, Southern Utah, UMKC) Mid-Eastern Atheltic (#3 Bethune-Cookman, #6 Howard, Norfolk State, Delaware State) Southwestern Athletic (#2 Grambling, #10 Prairie View) West Coast (#11 San Francisco, Santa Clara) Top Teams: Northern Arizona 77 Grambling 76 Arkansas State 74 Bethune-Cookman 69 San Francisco 68 Santa Clara 68 LaSalle 67 Southern Utah 67 Harvard 66 Howard 66 Drake 65 Georgia State 64 Sacramento State 64 Denver 63 Penn State 41 Umass 32 Iowa 24 UTEP 9 7 teams at 8 Chattanooga 5 Key Coaching Changes Cal Poly fired their head coach and replaced him with Tom Walker from Stony Brook. Walker took Stony to the Elite 8 a couple years ago. Utah State hired away the head coach of Canisius after a Final Four appearance. They replaced him with John Johnson from Loyola Chicago. He got Loyola into a post season tournament the last 4 years, and won an NCAA game in that span. After being the Harvard coach since the inception of the NCAA and pulling in a great recruiting class, Alex Brown left for the top job with Richmond. Harvard stole the head coach from Colorado State to replace him. Scott Black won an NIT title and then took CSU to 2 consecutive NCAA tournaments. Penn State hired a new head coach. Eric Brian was an assistant with Howard for the last 2 seasons. He was the head coach with Drexel from 1931-1933 and won 37 games in 3 seasons. That is all for significant coaching changes. Surprisingly, UTEP is sticking with their now 76 year old head coach.

Illinois added to my update list. Nice and easy with 3 Big 10 (11) teams to do.

Didn't Penn State just win the Big 10 regular season conference crown? Was the old guy hired away or did they feel like they were trading up by getting a piece of the Howard tree?

I have seen some strange coach movement. I never noticed it in a regular game, so my thought is that the team prestige is pretty volatile in this universe and one good season can greatly affect a team's prestige, sending coaches scrambling for jobs that appear better than they really are.

1938-1939 Season
Time for a new batch of NCAA future stars to be visited. This year we have eleven 5 star recruits. This year the top 4, along with #8 and #11 have all declared for the NBA draft. That leaves just 5 top recruits that will attend college. Four of them have already committed! #5 SF Tony Edwards, from Plain Dealing, LA, has committed to Arkansas State. #6 SG Earnest Marcoux, from Eager, AZ, has committed to Northern Arizona. #7 SF Bryant Shay, from Colton, CA, has committed to Santa Clara. #10 SG John Matz, from St. Petersburg, FL, has committed to Bethune-Cookman. Only 1 recruits left: #9 C Shawn Husted, from Oakland, CA: Santa Clara, Howard, Grambling, Arkansas State, Northern Arizona Preseason Polls Code:

Is it just me, or is the coaching staff at Northern Arizona great at recruiting? I mean, 2 5 stars last year and 1 this year? They should be loaded for a long time.
Did Penn State make the tourney last year? Didn't see them in the seeds. |

Regular Season Review
The Final Poll has been released: Code:
UMASS: 8-8, 16-13 Illinois: 12-4 (Regular Season Champs), 22-9 Iowa: 9-7, 17-15 Penn State: 8-8, 13-16 UTEP: 5-13, 6-23 Stat leaders Points per game Code:
Crippen repeats as the Nation’s leading scorer. Teams in his conference will be glad he is graduating. Hernandez is a Junior and was ranked only #322 back in 1935. Rebounds per game Code:
Bert is a Junior and was a top 100 recruit back in 1935. Pearman is a Senior this year and was ranked #45 back in 1934. Assists per game Code:
Hynes is a Senior this year. He was a 5 star prospect and rated #13 overall in 1934. Hoffman is just a junior and will be back for one more year. He was the #23 prospect back in 1935. Early Departures Code:
And now, the Brackets! West 1 Sacramento State 2 Duquesne 3 Florida International 4 Fresno State 8 Cal Poly 9 Georgia State 12 St. Joseph’s 10 Cal State Northridge Pretty strong region from top to bottom here. Midwest 1 Norfolk State 2 Drake 3 Boston University 4 IUPUI 8 Northern Arizona 9 San Francisco 5 Wichita State 7 St. Louis 6 Denver I don’t see the top seeds as being particularly strong here. The 8/9 game should be a great one, with the winner having a legit shot at knocking off the #1 seed. South 1 Grambling 2 Bethune-Cookman 3 Fordham 4 Penn 13 Texas 6 Southern Utah Outside of #1 and #2, this is a weak region. East 1 Arkansas State 2 Princeton 3 Howard 4 Troy State 13 Washington 5 Brown 11 Holy Cross

I will have to check the Big10's prestige. I know no teams have been ranked in the conference the last 2 years. They might be a bad conference and only the post season tournament winner gets in.

First Round highlights
The top 8 seeds in the tournament, that is, all of the #1 and #2 seeds advanced into the second round. The 3 seeds did not do nearly as good, in fact, we lost half of them in the first day of play. In the West Region, #14 Southeast Missouri State knocked off #3 Florida International, and in the East Region, #14 Florida Atlantic knocked off #3 Howard. We also lost a 4 seed in round 1. #13 Evansville beat #4 Fresno State in the West Region. Other notable teams to advance: #8 Cal Poly, #12 St. Joseph’s, #8 Northern Arizona, #5 Wichita State, #7 St. Louis, #6 Denver Second Round Highlights The West Region was already busted, but now we lost a #1 seed. Cal Poly knocked off a Final Four team from last year, and #1 seed Sacramento State! The other #1 seeds all advanced into the Sweet Sixteen. We also lost one of our #2 seeds, and maybe the best 2 seed out there. #2 Bethune-Cookman was upset by #7 St. Peter’s. We had two 3 seeds coming into this round and now we are down to just 1 as #6 Denver beats #3 Boston University. All three of the #4 seeds left won, and advanced into the Sweet 16. Other notable in the Sweet 16: #12 St. Joseph’s, #11 Holy Cross

Sweet Sixteen Highlights
And we have lost our second #1 seed of the tournament. In the East, #4 Troy State knocked off #1 Arkansas State. Grambling and Norfolk State have advanced to the Round of 8. The #2 seeds really struggled. #2 Duquesne was knocked out by #14 Southeast Missouri State. This Cinderella team will face #12 St. Joseph’s for a trip to the Final Four, so we will have a double digit seed in there, from the West. In the Midwest, the brackets held up perfectly as #1 Norfolk State will face off against #2 Drake. In the south, #3 Fordham will have to beat powerhouse #1 Grambling in order to reach the Final Four. #4 Troy State will face #11 Holy Cross in the East Region. Elite Eight Highlights Starting in the West, #12 St. Joseph’s used their experience at the end of the game to beat #14 Southeast Missouri State, 63-62 and become our first Final Four team of the year. In the Midwest, Norfolk State cruised to an easy 85-66 win over #2 Drake to claim a spot. #3 Fordham pulls off the huge upset, denying #1 Grambling another trip to the Final Four. Finally, in the East, #4 Troy State took care of #11 Holy Cross, 80-70 to advance.

Final Four
NIT Results: Cal State Fullerton beats UMBC for the NIT Title. The match ups: #12 St. Joseph’s vs. #3 Fordham #1 Norfolk State vs. #4 Troy State It is refreshing to see all these new teams here. The field is pretty wide open, even #12 St. Joseph’s can get it done since they have the most NCAA experience. Game 1 was a close game the whole way. St. Joseph’s PG got into foul trouble and they had to rely on their backup, Rudy Day, who was a #5 overall recruit in 1936. He is only a sophomore and he kept St. Joseph’s in the game with a game high 17 points and a game MVP award. Fordham just had too much depth though, and wore out the St. Joseph’s squad who saw 2 starters foul out. PF Roderick McGee and bench player, PG David jenkins each scored 12 for Fordham and they take the hard fought 76-71 victory. In game 2, Norfolk State had a monster game from C Joseph Brotherton, a #6 recruit in 1935 and a Junior who has declared for the draft. He scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Troy State just used their depth to out play Norfolk though. SF Mitch Duvall led the team with 13 points and they had 12 players score for them in a 75-64 victory. So the final has #3 Fordham vs. #4 Troy State The game was close for most of the time, but Fordham went inside on every possession late in the game, and their two big guys delivered. C Buster Mull scored 12 points and grabbed 12 boards while PF Roderick McGee scored 15 points to give Fordham a 68-60 victory and the 1938-1939 NCAA Title!

BU hired a no name assistant to replace him. Cal Poly’s coach headed to South Carolina State, so they went out and hired Tim McVay from Savannah State. He got that team into the NCAA tourney last year. UTEP’s coach finally retired. They went out and hired Damian Forsberg. Forsberg began his career as the head coach of Houston but was fired after 2 years and a 22-35 record. He went on to assist at North and South Carolina and last year was an assistant at Penn, where he helped get the team to the Sweet Sixteen. He is a good scout and has a solid O/D base of knowledge. His scouting is a bit weak.

We have a lot of 5 star recruits this year. 13 of them in fact. However, 6 of them, including the #1 overall recruit declared for the NBA draft. An additional one did not qualify academically to play in college. Only two of them have committed to a school so far. #2 SG Hayden Hendon, from Aurora, CA, committed to Northern Arizona. #6 SF Dallas Ray, from Muskegon, MI, has committed to Fordham. And the rest of them: #3 C Gervasio Rodriguez, from San Jose, CA: Arkansas State, Northern Arizona, San Francisco, Grambling, Fordham #7 SG Joseph McCrea, from Landrum, SC: Fordham, Grambling, Arkansas State #10 SG Gregory Roundtree, from Indio, CA: Northern Arizona, Grambling, Arkansas State, Fordham, San Francisco #12 SF Spencer Moran, from Voorheesville, NY: exactly the same as #10 The Preseason Polls have been released: Code:

Would you be able to post RPIs for the additional teams as well? That would give us some kind of idea if our teams are playing scrubs or a decent schedule and (hopefully?) give some hope of a slow build to respectability and NCAA tournaments.
If it is a major pain to pull that info up, then obviously don't put yourself out. Thanks for putting together an entertaining read. |

First Round Highlights
All four of our #1 seeds cruised into the second round of the tournament. The #2 seeds were almost perfect until just about the last game of the first round. Probably the strongest #2 seed, and clearly the most dominate team in NCAA history were upset big time in round 2. #15 Vermont took down #2 Grambling, 67-64! We also lost one of our #3 seeds. #14 Mercer took down #3 Norfolk State in the East Region. We also lost half of our #4 seeds. In the South, Georgia Southern beat #4 Santa Clara. In the Midwest, #13 Illinois-Chicago beat #4 Fordham. The defending champs fail to get out of the first round. Round Two Highlights Three of our #1 seeds advanced to the Sweet Sixteen this year. In the Midwest, we had our first #1 go down. #8 New Mexico State upset #1 Bethune-Cookman, 80-63. We lost another #2 seed in this round. #10 Pittsburgh beat Denver in round 1 and then beat #2 St. Mary’s in this round. We also lost another #3 seed. In the West, #6 Delaware State beat #3 Drake to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. All of our #4 seeds are now gone. In this round, #5 Villanova beat #4 Savannah State in the East Region. In the West, #5 Wichita State beat #4 St. Bonaventure.

In the Midwest, another 5 seed advances as Eastern Washington beats #8 New Mexico State. They will meet up with #3 San Francisco, who beat #2 Sacramento State in a bitter in-state rivalry game. In the South, #1 St. Joseph’s advances to face #2 South Carolina State. In the East, #1 Duquesne advances to face #10 Washington. Elite Eight Highlights First in the West, #5 Wichita State is the first team to get into the Final Four. They beat Pittsburgh, 69-61. In the Midwest, another #5 seed advances as Eastern Washington beats #3 San Francisco, 70-46. In a 1 vs. 2 battle, the #2 seed prevails in the South as South Carolina State beats #1 St. Joseph’s. Finally, in the East, our only #1 seed to survive and advance to the final four is Duquesne!

The Miners were nearly .500! Our best season yet!
Are the Miners playing NMSU twice a year like they do in real life? If so, that's gotta help the Miner's RPI a bit. Damn those Aggies and their being good...

The Final Four
NIT Results: St. Louis beats Kentucky for the NIT Title. The Match Ups #5 Wichita State vs. #2 South Carolina State #5 Eastern Washington vs. #1 Duquesne We have a whole new crop of teams outside of Duquesne, who was here once before. We will be crowning a First Time Champion this year, and outside of Duquesne, these are teams with not a strong tradition in the 10 years of NCAA history. In game 1, South Carolina State had the game’s leading scorer in PF Darrel Wilkins. Darrel is a Senior and was ranked as the #21 recruit back in 1935. He scored 18 points tonight. Wichita State overcame this performance with a few solid performances. Most notably, C Jeff Garton. Jeff is a Junior and was ranked #130 overall in 1935. He scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, both team highs to lead Wichita State to the 77-67 victory. In Game 2, Eastern Washington’s SF Courtney Halcomb just dominated the game. Courtney is a true freshman and was ranked just 64 overall in 1938. He was the game high scorer with 22 points. But one man alone does not make a team. Duquesne used a starting 5 where anybody could hurt you every time up the floor. The starters scored 9, 7, 8, 13, and 10. Plus they had a lot of help off the bench. Adan Whiting, another true freshman hit the game winning three pointer in addition to his team high 13 points to give Duquesne a 75-73 victory. The Finals was not much of a matchup, #1 Duquesne ran away with this game, thanks in part to Senior PG Ronnie Martel. He scored a game high 16 points and had 5 assists. Junior SF Andrew Chandler scored 12 and Sophomore PF Tim Kelly scored 11 with 10 rebounds. All of that added up to a decisive 73-59 victory and Duquesne’s first ever National Title!

Off Season
The West wins the High School All-Star game for the second year in a row. The All-Time Series is 6-4 in favor of the West. Code:
Season Awards Code:
Hernandez is a Senior and is graduating this year. He was mostly overlooked in recruiting. He was ranked just #322 back in 1935. He started every year of his career and averaged 26.1 points per game in his senior season. Courtney Halcomb had a great year, leading Eastern Washington into the Final Four. He averaged nearly 18 points a game this year. Thomas Walker came to South Carolina State and took them to the Final Four in his first season with them. He was previously the head coach at Cal Poly and Stony Brook among other smaller programs. This year’s recruiting rankings have been released: Code:
Fordham put together a class with the following rankings: #30, 28, 6, 4, 26. That is insane! Northern Arizona had a great class as well, with recruits ranked #50, 264, 2, 39. Top rated conferences: Atlantic 10 (#2 Duquesne, #4 St. Joseph’s, #20 Fordham, #22 St. Bonaventure, LaSalle) Big East (#18 Seton Hall) Big Sky (#1 Northern Arizona, #9 Sacramento State, #23 Eastern Washington) Ivy (#21 Brown) Mid-Continent (#24 IUPUI, UMKC) Mid-Eastern Athletic (#3 Bethune, #6 South Carolina State, #11 Norfolk State, #16 Delaware State) West Coast (#7 San Fran, #8 St. Mary’s, #10 Santa Clara) I would say the A-10 and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conferences are neck and neck for the strongest, with the Big Sky and West Coast, right behind. Top Teams: Duquesne 79 Northern Arizona 78 Arkansas State 77 Grambling 75 Sacramento State 74 San Francisco 73 Drake 70 Troy State 70 Fordham 68 IUPUI 68 Bethune 67 Umass 38 Penn State 37 Illinois 25 Iowa 23 UTEP 19 Nebraska 5 Oklahoma State 5 Chattanooga 4 With two teams in the bottom 3, the Big XII conference flat out sucks. Coaching Movement Grambling’s coach, Colin Kim retired. They hired Cal State Fullerton’s Jason Perkins to replace him. Perkins has been with Fullerton from the start and has a 199-125 career record and 5 NCAA tournament appearances and an NIT Championship. After not reaching the post-season for 2 straight years, Prairie View fired their coach and replaced him with St. Mary’s top assistant, Josh McDonald. Josh has previous head coaching experience, most notably with Syracuse and UNC. He is 78-72 as a head coach. UTEP’s new coach was hired away by Bradley University. UTEP replaced him with Chris Edington. Chris has been an assistant with Oakland and Ohio most recently. He has some head coaching experience with Jackson State where he went 30-30 over 2 seasons. After a Final Four run, Wichita State’s coach retired. They replace him with Mark Lieberman from Alabama State. In 10 years of coaching, Mark is 186-133 with 6 NCAA appearances and a Final Four team with Washington in 1931. A special note about Colin Kim. He retired as the head coach Grambling, a job he held for 8 years after being their assistant for the first 2 years. He led them to 2 NCAA Titles and 8 consecutive NCAA appearances, 5 times getting at least to the Sweet Sixteen. He retires with a 199-48 record as a head coach, 6 Southwestern Athletic Conference Titles, and a Conference Coach of the Year Award this past season. He retires 13th on the All-Time Wins list for head coaches, and #1 all time in winning percentage with a 0.806! He is also the only head coach to win multiple NCAA Titles. He has also had the most All-Americans, with 3. Our first real coaching legend of the game.

1940-1941 Season
We start off the 11th season of NCAA play with, as always, a look at recruiting. This year we have ten 5 star recruits, and only 2 of them have declared for the draft. Even more interesting is the fact that none of them have committed to schools yet. Here they are: #1 PG Joe Gustafson, from Newberg, OR: Arkansas State, San Fran, Sac State, Northern Arizona, Duquesne #3 C Jeffrey Fitch, from Piedmont, SC: Northern Arizona #4 PG Johnnie Hyden, from Venice, FL: Arkansas State #5 SG Adrian Montgomery, from Spring Hill, FL: Duquesne #6 C Billy Hoopes, from Pendleton, OR: Northern Arizona, San Fran, Sac State #7 SF Curtis Batchelder, from New Castle, DE: Delaware State, St. Joseph’s, IUPUI, Princeton #8 SF Josh Marty, from Weippe, ID: Sac State #10 SF Lionel Brinkman, from West Bend, IA: Duquesne And the Pre Season Top 25 Poll Code:

Mid Season Review
On the recruiting front, we have 5 players who have committed to schools. Here they are: #3 C Jeffrey Fitch committed to Northern Arizona. #5 SG Adrian Montgomery committed to Duquesne. #7 SF Curtis Batchelder committed to Delaware State. #8 SF Josh Marty committed to Sacramento State. #10 SF Lionel Brinkman committed to Duquesne. Duquesne is really using that NCAA Title in the recruiting wars to their advantage! Here are the undecided players: #1 PG Joe Gustafson: Arkansas State, San Fran #4 PG Johnnie Hyden: Arkansas State #6 C Billy Hoopes: San Fran And the Mid Season Polls Code:

Regular Season Wrap up
Only 1 more recruit has committed: #1 PG Joe Gustafson has committed to Arkansas State. Final Polls Code:
Umass: 7-9 (4th in East), 16-15, RPI 74 Iowa 10-6 (T3rd), 20-10, RPI 51 Illinois 8-8 (T5th), 14-15, RPI 164 Penn State 4-12 (Last), 10-19, RPI 256 UTEP 7-11 (T7th), 12-18, RPI 289 Iowa and Umass were invited to the NIT Tournament, both in the East Region. Points per game Code:
Guenther is only a sophomore and was ranked only #202 in 1938. Hui is a Junior and was ranked #180 in 1937. Rebounds per game Code:
Yung is a Junior and was ranked #153 in 1936. Tedesco is a Senior and was ranked #200 in 1936. Assists per game Code:
Staud is a Senior and was only ranked #626 back in 1936. Valdez is a Junior and was ranked #456 in 1937. And the Brackets! West 1 Bethune-Cookman 2 St. Mary’s 3 St. Bonaventure 4 Sacramento State 13 Cal State Northridge 5 New Mexico State 6 Eastern Washington 11 South Carolina State Some depth here, but overall a pretty weak bracket. Mid West 1 Troy State 2 Arkansas State 3 Northern Arizona 4 St. Joseph’s 7 San Francisco 6 Wichita State Very top heavy. Poor Troy State, they get a 1 seed and end up in this bracket. South 1 Brown 2 LaSalle 3 Drake 4 New Orleans 5 Fordham 9 Grambling 7 Seton Hall Wide open bracket, especially for some of those top seeds who have been consistently good up until tournament time. East 1 Duquesne 2 Villanova 3 Delaware State 4 Southern Illinois 16 Duke (with a 11-21 record) 9 Florida 13 Washington 5 IUPUI Not all that much in the way of Duquesne getting back to the Final Four for a chance to repeat.

First Round Highlights
The first round saw an upset of such huge proportions. Probably nothing we will ever see again. 11-21 Duke, last place in the ACC, but winners of the conference tournament have knocked out #1 seed and defending champion Duquesne. They didn’t just knock them out either, they crushed them, 75-52. Unbelievable! The other #1 seeds all advanced. We had a #2 seed go down as well, also in the East region. #2 Villanova was upset by #15 St. Peter’s, 77-70. All of the 3 seeds advanced, but we lost one of our 4 seeds, St. Joseph’s. #13 Ohio pulled off the upset. Other notable to advance: #6 Wichita State, #5 New Mexico State, #11 South Carolina State, #9 Grambling, #9 Florida, #5 IUPUI Second Round Highlights After 2 rounds, we are down to just two #1 seeds. This time, #1 Troy State fell victim to #8 Valparaiso, 62-52. The only #2 seed to advance to the Sweet Sixteen was St. Mary’s in the West Region. #2 Arkansas State lost to #10 Western Michigan and #2 LaSalle lost to #10 Loyola Marymount in the South Region. We lost our first #2 seed in this round as #6 Wichita State upset #3 Northern Arizona. And all of our #4 seeds are gone as well. #4 Sac State lost to #5 New Mexico State. #4 New Orleans lost to #12 Wyoming. #4 Southern Illinois lost to #5 IUPUI. So after just 2 rounds, these brackets are all messed up and the field is as wide open as it has been since the first season.

Sweet Sixteen Highlights
Our two remaining #1 seeds, Bethune-Cookman and Brown both advance to the round of 8. In the West, Bethune took care of New Mexico and will face #2 St. Mary’s. The West played out as predicted. In the Midwest, #12 Weber State beat #8 Valpo to advance to the Elite Eight. They will face #6 Wichita State. Wichita State will try to make back to back Final Four appearances as they beat #10 Western Michigan. In the South, #1 Brown advanced to face #10 Loyola Marymount, who knocked off #3 Drake. Finally, in the East, #5 IUPUI beat #16 Duke and #3 Delaware State beat #7 Lafayette. Elite Eight Highlights And we are down to only a single #1 seed. #1 Bethune-Cookman beat #2 St. Mary’s to advance to the Final Four from the West Region. In the Midwest, #6 Wichita State returns to the Final Four by beating #12 Weber State. This is the 2nd trip in as many years for Wichita. In the South, #1 Brown was knocked off by #10 Loyola Marymount. And in the East, #5 IUPUI finally earn themselves a spot in the Final Four by beating Delaware State.

Final Four
First, Belmont beat Denver for the NIT title. The Match Ups #1 Bethune-Cookman vs. #10 Loyola Marymount #6 Wichita State vs. #5 IUPUI Both Semi-Final matchups were total blowouts, which should set up a good finals, I hope. In game one, Bethune-Cookman just kept going to C Lenard Grafton. The Junior Center was simply unstoppable in the paint. Grafton scored 28 points on 8 for 10 shooting and 12 for 13 free throw shooting. He also grabbed 7 rebounds. Unfortunatly, Grafton has declared for the draft and we will not get to see his senior season. Needless to say, Bethune rolled to a win, 88-58. IUPUI didn’t have much problems tonight either. They also went down low to a Center. Winford Taylor scored 23 points and pulled down 10 boards. Taylor is a senior and was ranked #37 back in 1936. IUPUI had two other 20 point scorers in Sophomore SG Burton Jenkins scored 22 and Senior PG Rico Velasco scored 20 and had 11 assists. As expected this was just a terrific game. Bethune again went down low to their Center, Lenard Grafton and he responded with another 25 points and 6 rebounds. IUPUI relied on their star PG, Rico Velasco. He scored 22 and dished out 8 assists. The game was tied at the end of regulation. IUPUI was in serious foul trouble, and that was the difference in OT, as they did not have all their starters available. Bethune-Cookman ran away in OT to a 87-80 victory and are the 1940 NCAA Champions! This is their first title.

1941-1942
The last few years has seen Wichita State make 2 straight final fours, but other than that there has not been a dominate team like Grambling and Northern Arizona once were. Most of the same teams are competing for the top recruits. Teams like Duquesne and Bethune have been consistently great, and now have titles to show for it. Can one of these guys be the next Grambling? It all starts with recruiting. This year we have ten 5 star recruits, and only 2 have declared for the draft. Two others have already committed: #1 SF James Steel, from Lancaster, KY, has committed to Troy State. #3 SF Daniel Moreau, from Simi Valley, CA has committed to Northern Arizona. Here are the rest: #2 PF Mark Waddle, from Poultney, VT: Duquesne, Troy State #4 SG Warren Spikes, from Kalamazoo, MI: Drake #5 SG David Joplin, from Chicago, IL: Drake #6 SF Hinrich Stibich, from Frankfurt, Germany: Bethune #8 PG Michael Moffitt, from Monticello, GA: Drake #10 PF Tim Spencer, from Booneville, KY: Duquesne, IUPUI, Bethune, Northern Arizona And the Top 25 Pre Season Polls have been released: Code:

South 1 Brown 2 St. Bonaventure 3 Bethune 4 Loyola Marymount 9 Norfolk State 7 Seton Hall Weak. Bethune has a great shot at getting through this bracket. First Round Highlights
Not a terribly exciting first round. All top twelve teams, that is, all of the #1, #2 and #3 seeds were victorious in the first round. That is probably more unlikely to happen than a 16 seed winning. Oh wait, that happened last year. You just never know around here. The 4 seeds did not fair quite as well. #13 Texas Southern beat #4 San Francisco and #13 Coastal Carolina beat #4 Loyola Marymount. Other notable to advance: #8 New Mexico State, #5 UMKC, #6 Canisius, #9 Drake, #5 Santa Clara, #9 Norfolk State, #12 Grambling, #7 Delaware State Second Round Highlights The upsets waited for round 2 this year. We have only two #1 seeds left. In the West, #1 Northern Arizona was taken down by #8 New Mexico State and in the South, #9 Norfolk State beat #1 Brown. We only had a single 2 seed get knocked out this round and that was Wichita State, who was beaten by #7 Delaware State. All of the 3 seeds are still alive. The two remaining 4 seeds both advanced as well. Other notable to advance: #5 UMKC

Sweet Sixteen highlights
We are down to just a single #1 seed and that is Duquesne in the East Region. They will face #7 Delaware State, who knocked off #3 Troy State. In the South, #5 Air Force beat #9 Norfolk State to advance to the Elite Eight. They will face #2 St. Bonaventure, who knocked off #3 Bethune-Cookman. In the Midwest, the #1 seed, Arkansas State was taken out by #4 Sacramento State. They will face #2 Fordham in the next round. Fordham beat #3 Southern Illinois. Finally, in the West, #5 UMKC will face #2 Denver. Elite Eight highlights Starting in the West, the higher seed prevailed as #2 Denver took care of #5 UMKC to be the first team to advance to the Final Four this year! The higher seeds did not prevail across the board though, particularly in the East where the only #1 seed, Duquesne, failed to advance this year. They were beat by #7 Delaware State. In the Midwest, #4 Sacramento State makes a return to the Final Four by beating #2 Fordham. Finally, in the South, #2 St. Bonaventure takes care of #5 Air Force to round out this year’s Final Four field.

Final Four
Alabama State beats Coppin State for the NIT title. The Matchups #2 Denver vs. #2 St. Bonaventure #4 Sacramento State vs. #7 Delaware State In game 1 Denver relied on their point guard, Kenny Wilhite. Kenny is an outgoing senior and was ranked #75 overall back in 1936. He led the team with 17 points tonight. The Bonnies used a lot of muscle to overcome the hot shooting of Wilhite. C Mario Pearman, another Senior and ranked #123 in 1936, poured in a game high 22 points. Their starting PF fouled out with a big goose egg, but their backup PF played great, scoring 10 points and grabbing 5 boards in just 19 minutes of play. The muscle inside was way more than Denver could handle and St. Bonaventure wins this one, 79-68. Delaware State used no bench at all today. They had just 6 players contribute. Senior PG Jesper Tran led the team with 25 points and 6 assists today. Also, Curtis Batchelder and Antonio Jones each had a double double for Delaware State. The lack of depth worked against them late in the game though. They had a lead, but you could see the slowness in them as Sacramento State stormed back. Sac State was led by PF Lon Marques and his 16 points, but it was SF Josh Marty, the #8 recruit in 1940 as a JUCO who grabbed 11 boards and hit his 9th and 10th points of the night on the game winning buzzer shot to give Sac State the 75-74 victory! The Final was all defense and St. Bonaventure has that in spades. They allowed only 1 Sac State player to break double figures and that was PF Lon Marques with just 10 points. Meanwhile, the Bonnies PG Garfield Hall, just a sophomore, but ranked #53 in 1938, led the team with 15 points as St. Bonaventure is your 1941 NCAA Champions with a final score of 60-45!
