Have some of you been recruiting already? Or is that AI recruiting?

No, I got a senior walk-on at SF.

Does your walk-on always come from your school's location?

Walk Ons are random year scrubs. They exist to provide extra bodies in case you have a run of academically ineligible players.

And the AI doesn't recruit. They just get newly generated freshmen every year.

One thing I'd *love* to see would be the change in current attributes over a specified time frame (whether it's since the past week/start of the season/etc, of course having multiple selectable options for this or some sort of chart system would be even better).

Most of the reason I've set up a spreadsheet is to chart information like that to see how well players are responding to certain training types, but if it were presented in their player screens (or a history area of some sort), it could eliminate that need, especially with how you've now set up the training screen.

Damn, so walk-ons will never be decent enough to really contribute?

Which is the one thing I really can't do with the way the players table is constructed (without a big overhaul in how that data is stored, at least). Each attribute is simply altered each training update: it doesn't care about past updates, and there's no field in the table to store such info.

Also, to do that right, we're talking a few thousand players right now, and that's with 200 teams. Figure you need 20 values per update (16 for stats before/after, and a couple more to identify the player) per player. That would get big...rapidly.

If you leave 'em on your squad and train em a bit, they could be passable. But no, they're likely never gonna be anything you'd WANT to put out there. They were meant to act as emergency players.

And may be even more handy in a pinch if I add injuries like I want to.

I've started. Unfortunately, the guy I'm targetting at the moment wants to go out-of-state whereas I'm in his state. He'd be perfect as a continuation player for the squad I already have...

Moderately is also spelled wrong in the recruiting pull-down menu, if we're looking at typos.

Yes!

What I'm stuck trying to do is copy and paste the output into excel and make something of it.... But because it's in a multi-row/multi-column format it makes it difficult...

So like... if not a csv if each player had their stats go down one column instead of across two or something.. it just makes it difficult to compare, track improvements, etc.

If you're willing to do a more spreadsheet friendly output feature, I'd like to throw my vote in for numerical representations for the skills. Even if it's kept on the site using the naming convention, would be really nice to have those as numericals for spreadsheet use.

Also put in the Midgets and Trees. It's likely not perfectly accurate because of the way I store height, and I can't produce an average height without making the code really really complex. But more fun.

Changed in the CSV. Bear in mind, that's not the REAL stat value, just a 1-20 representing each level.

Damn people wanting numbers. You'd think this was a text sim forum or something.

You can always pile those two kids one above the other and use them as Center.

I'll check this out now, thanks! I was just using a VLOOKUP to change them to 1-20, so it wasn't a huge problem for me on the numbers vs. text .

Can't we have games tonight?

I'm also remembering how much fun I had with this.. I'm sure I'm influenced by it being done by an FOFCer that is very receptive to feedback..

Anyway.. I need to dig into recruiting next, I just haven't decided what kind of strategery I want to attempt there...

I was wondering though about another offensive style.. I was going to use Run and Shoot until I actually read it.. what I was thinking was more a pressing, aggressive offense rather than one of those shoot 100 time a game offenses ...

It sounds like we need to be careful though - I think he was careful to mention that these are just representations, not values. I take that to mean that not all ratings are equal. In other words a 10 is not 10x as good as a 1, etc, etc..

Right CW?

I mean, is that what the Run and Shoot is? Is it aggressive or insane? Is it the kind of offense that in real life you'd expect to be scoring like 140 points a night, or just 80 points?

Mind you, it's been awhile since I wrote the engine, but it's basically the machine gun theory of basketball. You're not relying on ball movement to get an open shot, you're relying on getting it up there as much as possible as quickly as possible. You're not gonna get necessarily an open shot, you're gonna get a shot.

It's not an INSANE level, none of the offenses are, it just relies on getting a shot up instead of passing it around.

Right CW?

The numeric/word versions of stats represent a range of numbers equal to the "real" skill, just like Hattrick did, and yes, they are not all equal ranges.

Gotcha. I'll probably play with it at some point, but I think it fits less with the age adjustments for my team anyways. Before those adjustments I think it would make sense, but now my talents fit some of the other offenses a little better.

hey CW, anyway to make it so that we can change our team names? i think i like the Dean Houston University Violators much much better. i was at work when i did my team so i did it really quickly during my lunch break. or can you do a one-time name change, as annoying as that might be.

also, congrats on making a very simple but fun game. it could be the start of something. if you would like me to make logos or something let me know, i like doing anything that increases the eye candy element of something.
