#17 Santa Clara (0-0) at Auburn (0-0) It’s a good feeling to start off the season, and my first year on the job, with a very convincing 74-56 victory. The guys seem to be adapting to my defensive style right away. C Farmer was our leading scorer of the day with 21 points. SF Campbell added 14 and PF Fields scored 9 points and grabbed 14 boards. Code:
November 21, 1986 #1 Santa Clara (1-0) at Rutgers (0-0) Game 2 was even better than game 1. We produced more results on both sides of the ball and won 80-49. I still don’t think we are an NCAA team, but you never know because our conference will give us a solid RPI if we can tread water and pull off a few upsets. We had 4 starters score in double figures, led by C Farmer and PF Fields scoring 16 each. SG Nieman had 14 points and 10 boards. Code:
November 25, 1986 #13 Santa Clara (2-0) at Toledo (0-0) We suffer our first setback of the year when we just couldn’t find a way to score in the last few minutes. The final here was 57-56. Sanders had his first good game of the year, scoring wise, with 22 points. Fields added 10 along with 13 rebounds. Code:
November 30, 1986 #13 Santa Clara (2-1) at UCLA (2-1) We lose another close one on the road and fall to 2-2 on the season. The final here was 70-66. Nieman led us with 20 points while Fields and Farmer had 10 each. Code:

December 13, 1986 Penn State (1-3) at Santa Clara (3-3) We get back above 500 on the year and win my first home game as the Santa Clara coach, 74-58. Nieman had a 19 points game and Sanders added 13 points. Dale came off the bench, from way down in the depth chart, to add 10. Code:
December 18, 1986 Fordham (4-1) at Santa Clara (4-3) We win two in a row at home, and this one should look good on our resume come the end of the year. The final here was 78-64. Campbell led the way with 23 points. Farmer scored 17 to go along with his 10 rebounds. Lazarus came off the bench with a dozen points as well. Code:
December 23, 1986 Purdue (3-4) at Santa Clara (5-3) Another great looking performance from us as we win 84-56. To me, that is the perfect final score. Nieman led us in scoring with 22 points today. Sanders added a dozen along with 8 assists. Campbell chipped in with 10 and our two big men combined for 17 points and 18 rebounds. Code:
December 27, 1986 Washington (3-4) at Santa Clara (6-3) Our winning streak reaches 4 games with another blowout at home. The final was 78-57. Nieman scored a game high 18 points and Sanders had a dozen along with 5 assists. Code:
December Notes: We landed our top rated recruit. Center Jamey Reinhart is from Spurfield, Canada. Code:

You were just afraid of UMass and their RPI of 327 they had a couple of years ago
I do think you made a good move by bolting based on all the talent you had leaving. You had 4 guys being projected to get drafted, wow! Good luck with the big boys in the West Coast Conference. |

Notre Dame (4-5) at Santa Clara (7-3) There isn’t much better in life than to start out a new year by beating the crap out of the Irish. We kill them, 89-65. SG Nieman went for a game high 25 points. Fields scored 19 and pulled in 11 rebounds. Farmer was right there with 17 points and Sanders added 16. Code:

January 17, 1987 #2 Pepperdine (12-2) at #23 Santa Clara (10-4) I guess you can say the bright side is we only lost by 10 at home today. We just knocked off the #6 team in the land, and a perennial National Title contender, on their own court! The final score was 85-77! Fields was just a monster today, scoring a game high 22 points and all pulling in a game high 12 rebounds! Nieman added 15 points and Sanders had 13. Code:

Portland (13-8) at Santa Clara (13-7) We get back into the Win column here with a 67-51 final score. This also evens up our conference record at 4-4. Neiman led us in scoring with 14 points. We had 3 other players score 10 each: Campbell, Sanders and Howard. Code:
February 12, 1987 Santa Clara (14-7) at San Francisco (11-10) San Fran has fallen to the bottom of the league standings, after once being a very strong program. We handle them pretty easily, 73-59. Nieman scored 19 points to lead the way. He is clearly emerging as our go to guy on offense. Campbell added 10 points. Code:
February 14, 1987 Santa Clara (15-7) at St. Mary’s (12-9) We pick up another solid road victory, 82-75. This win puts us right in the middle of the pack. There are 3 teams clearly better than us, but below us, the teams are clearly inferior to us. I think a 4th place finish is what we are shooting for, unless the top teams beat up on each other a bit. Nieman led the was again with a team high 18. Campbell and Sanders had 12 each and Farmer added 11. Code:
February 19, 1987 #6 Loyola (18-7) at #22 Santa Clara (16-7) We pull out a 2 point victory today when Nieman breaks the tie with 51 seconds to go, and they miss three shot attempts on their next possession. We actually pull into a tie for 3rd place with a 65-63 victory today! Nieman scored 22 including the game winner. Fields had 11 points and 12 rebounds while Sanders scored 10. Code:
February 21, 1987 St. Mary’s (13-10) at #22 Santa Clara (17-7) We manage to pull out another close one, our second time in three days. The final was 82-79. Nieman went for another 18 points to lead the team. Fields had another very strong game with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Sanders also scored 14 and Campbell added 10. Code:
February 24, 1987 San Francisco (13-12) at #17 Santa Clara (18-7) After a couple of great wins, we got cut down to size by getting upset at home today, 99-94. The defense played so terrible today and we had 17 turnovers. Fields is putting together a string of brilliant performances though. Today he scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Code:
February 28, 1987 #17 Santa Clara (18-8) at #8 San Diego (22-5) We pull off another huge upset on the road in the final game of the conference schedule. The final was 85-83. We have one more OOC game coming up and then we head to the WCC tourney on a real high! We had 5 players score in double figures today, led by Farmer with 17 and Fields with 16. Campbell had 15 while Sanders had 14. Howard scored 10 off the bench. Code:
March 6, 1987 Southern Utah (6-21) at #20 Santa Clara (19-8) We barely pull this game out. Hopefully, we were just looking ahead a bit. Anyway, we get our 20th win of the year by a 81-78 final score. Nieman led us in scoring with 19 points. Farmer had 13 along with 11 boards while Campbell had 15 and Fields added 11. Code:

(1) #2 IUPUI (28-5) vs. (4) #16 Santa Clara (23-9) We hung tough with IUPUI, mainly thanks to Sanders, who led us in scoring with 16 points and Farmer who added 13. Nobody else could get their offense going though, and we get knocked out of the tournament by a 70-61 final score. Code:
Sweet Sixteen Highlights In the West, #1 Pepperdine advances over #12 Wyoming. They will face #7 Florida A&M, who beat #6 Loyola. In the Midwest, IUPUI will face #3 Idaho State, who knocked off #2 Texas A&M CC. In the South another #1 advances when San Diego beats #5 Harvard. They will play #2 Lehigh, who got by #1 Wake Forest. Yeah, it is coming back. I have just been pressed for time, and have not been able to do much with either of my dynasties. This is my favorite of all time, so I will be picking it back up soon, with any luck.

Quick Recap:
We left off at the Elite eight in 1987. Newsworthy is the fact that Penn State (one of the teams we have been following along, and who have been largely unsuccessful for 50 years) has reached the Elite Eight. Santa Clara, my team, finished the season ranked #16 in the polls and reached the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 1979 (when we advanced to the Elite Eight ourselves). We lost to IUPUI….and the story continues. Elite Eight In the West Region, #1 Pepperdine advances to the final four with a victory over the 7 seed, Florida A&M. In the Midwest, #3 Idaho State knocked off the top seeded IUPUI team to advance. In the South, another #1 seed advanced when San Diego beat Lehigh. Finally, in the East, the #15 seed, the unlikeliest of teams, beat #5 Western Illinois, 82-77 to reach the Final Four!

Final Four
NIT Finals: Boise State beats Youngstown State for the BIT Title. The Match ups (1) Pepperdine vs. (1) San Diego (3) Idaho State vs. (15) Penn State Talk of re-seeding the Final Four rose up this weekend as the first game was considered the true Championship game. Amateur bracketologists and gamblers nation wide balked at the idea. Still, this first game was a great one that came down to the wire. Pepperdine’s Wilfred Sappington, just a sophomore, carried his team with 17 points and 10 boards on the day. San Diego’s Senior PG had just a slightly better game with 20 points and 5 boards, along with 3 assists. He also hit the buzzer beating shot to give San Diego the 62-61 victory! In game 2, Penn State’s run came to an abrupt end as Idaho State’s Senior PF, Benito Marin scored 23 and Junior SF, Victor Rosa added 20. The final score was 85-66, but this one felt like it was over at halftime as Idaho State led 54-29. Still, an amazing season at Penn State, and one they will not likely forget for quite some time. In the Finals, Idaho State put on another amazing show and wrapped this game up by halftime with a 44-27 score. They tacked on 3 more to their lead in the second half and win the National Title by a 81-61 final score!
