Xom is apparantly trying to make up for his poor treatment of me in my last game-I have a blue devil pet (was an orange demon till Xom changed him) and just now he gave me two artifact weapons, one a sabre, the other a mace, about 10 seconds apart from each other-both are chaos, the sabre is also +1 dex, the mace gives resist cold, magic resistance, and stealth.

Died when an orc pack killed my pet demon-and I was poisoned, but Xom revived me, and I drank all my potions and the last was healing!

Well I managed to do a little better, albeit, not by very much.
I didn't have any good weapons, and just a handful of mutations, so I was surprised I got as far as I did. I think it had to do with my ability to shoot a bow, as I was able to kill most creatures before they got next to me.

Lack of posts does not mean lack of trying. I just have not beaten my best score yet. I know I've done 50 attempts at DSCK on my home computer and probably another 50 on my laptop. This is such a frustrating combo. I can usually make it to the Temple, but rarely make it to the Lair. Whoever wins please make the next one something easy like Mountain Dwarf Fighter.

I've got a guy that's better than my best score I'm sure, but not anywhere near Lonnie's best. Will play for a bit tonight and may kill him off if I don't die before then and post before deadline tonight.

I'm having troubles too..though I'm not really doing all that worse than my usual attempts. This dude's rough beyond even the obvious Xom burden, 'cause he's got entirely mediocre stats (12s and 13s) AND skills (seemingly -1 at everything).

Well I should know better than to post I'm working on a character. Got attacked by something I couldnt see with no healing left-read a scroll in desperation and it was acquirement-asked for armor, and got a helmet. Picked it up but couldn't use it before I died...and in a truly Xom inspired moment guess what it was? a helmet of see invisible. "Xom thinks that's hilarious!"
Code:
Frustrating playing a warrior type because you really don't have much of a chance against big groups of monsters unless you get lucky and find something during your travels. avoided all portals as a result with my characters in this challenge. And Xom's really too chaotic I think given how many of us died to one of his "interventions" |

We've only been on DSCK for a week, so we still have a week to go! (although I'm going to play something different anyway to break up the Xomness) You at least had some nice artifacts on that run though. Too bad you didn't get that see invisible helmet on a few turns earlier. Unseen Horrors are a bitch because they attack like bats, but you can't see them so unlike an invisible Orc Mage, you can't just find where they are standing and hit them. Best thing to do is get off the level as soon as you can. Usually they hit and run so they are not next to you when you go up or down stairs.

I've been playing City of Heroes a bunch and haven't given this one any attempts. With the low scores, it looks like I may be able to snipe second to last place with a little luck though

My most promising DSCK to date. He had the tools to go further, but I let my own idiocity take over. No blaming Xom on this one.
17625 Chaotic the Nimble (level 12, -1/87 HPs) Began as a Demonspawn Chaos Knight on Aug 30, 2011. Was a Plaything of Xom. Slain by an eight-headed hydra (8 damage) ... on Level 6 of the Lair of Beasts. The game lasted 02:14:57 (21919 turns). I was lucky with my demonspawn mutations, I had demonic guardian 3 by level 9. That helped me out a great deal as I was running around. I almost felt too powerful. The other thing that helped was Xom gifting me this: the +6,+1 crossbow "Reannearr" {god gift, elec, rElec MR}. My axe was cursed at the time so I assume Xom thought it was funny to give me a good crossbow I couldn't use... but I was sneaky and had a remove curse scroll. He also gifted me this rod: b - a +3 rod of venom (2/11) (in hand) {god gift} which had a. cure poison, b. poison bolt, c. poisonous cloud, and d. poison arrow. The last thing that really helped was me finding a spell book with only one spell in it: animate skeleton. Now back to the death story. I had taken out a Hydra already, pfft no big deal. I also had two skeleton friends with me that I had raised from blink frogs. They were pretty tough. I round the corner and see a 8 headed Hydra. So I have a plan, give it a poison arrow and a poison bolt from my wand and let it fight my blink frog skeletons while I shoot it with my crossbow. Sounded like a great plan. I poisoned it really good and the skeletons got it down to orange health. Since it was still poisoned, I though I would kite it around and hope that it died. If it recovered from the poison I would then try to hit with a wand of fire.and hope it killed it before it could attack me as I was down to less than half health myself. For some reason it was faster than me. I double checked the wiki and a hydra is speed 10 and I didn't even hit it with my axe of Chaos that might have hasted it. So since he had a step on me, all eight heads got a chance to take a bite and I was left with -1 hp. My only guess is that Xom hasted it or slowed me, because I'm pretty sure I've kited hydras around before. Now of course in this time of need my demonic guardian chose not to show up. The Balrag and Executioner are mighty fine friends to have in those times. The Executioner slayed a whole room of elephants while I just sat there. Wish he would have came along for the Hydra.

I never take on hydras if I can help it, especially the ones with more heads-too much risk involved for me. Does sound like you had a pretty powerful character there with that mutation and sweet rod of venom. My current guy has also found a necromancy spellbook and learned animate skeleton. I especially liked having Sigmund and Edmund as friendly assistants. Found three other spellbooks with this guy and one is summoning, so have summon small mammal from that one so far, and on top of that I have a box of beasts that Xom likes me using. Oh an amulet of faith to keep those crazy Xom moments coming.

So far I've rocked about 10 knights, and they've all been 200 points or less. Xom seems to like to make butterflies appear around me at random. He's also made me his teddy bear.
My most promising guy to date got a +2/+2 Hammer of Protection on level one and some Plate Mail, then was killed as soon as I went down stairs to level 2 - literally instantly. A worm was right next to the stairs and Terrance shot me with some fire. That kind of sucked. |

Is it me, or does Xom seem to really like to torment you?
Played thru with another couple dozen games, and it seems like I can't even get beyond the third level of the dungeon without Xom taking half my heath away just for kicks, or throwing 6-12 demons at me from out of the blue. I feel like Vince, the last run thru, as soon as I finish off the 2nd level of the dungeon, I start my trek to one set of the stairs to level 3, and boom, Xom sends 6 demons at me. HELLO, I'm still a very weak character with nothing in my pathetic inventory that can help me in any way, shape, or form!!! Xom definitely needs an overhaul in this version, as he seems to hinder more than help, and when he does actually help, it seems like it only takes a turn around the next corner, and then he's back to trying to kill you. |

I've been looking for something like this ever since I was underwhelmed with the Dungeons of Dredmor's game mechanics.
My best so far Code:
Xom confused me and left me to the tender charms of a Centaur. Boo! |

Welcome Narcizo! and oof! What a horrible time to get confusion! Centaurs can be downright nasty if you have no quick way of taking them out from a distance or being able to take cover until you can get into hand to hand with them.
I still play Dungeons of Dredmor from time to time. It's hard to make it past the first level because there always seems to be a "Room of Death" either a room filled with about 10 mobs or an actual visit from Deth. I tend to ignore the crafting skills when I choose my starting skills because the actual crafting goods can be few and far between in the dungeon-same with throwing/archery-I usually run out of starting ammo pretty quickly-need to start with more. good luck the rest of the way! |

I think I got to about level 7 or something with a blood mage fireball caster and then was rushing too much and stood on a trap of bling which created a bunch of money that fell on my head and killed me. So that wasn't very good. Lost interest in starting up again after that.

Welcome Narcizo, the good news is there are only a few days in this Demonspawn Chaosknight tomfoolery left. Now I will say that will all respect as I think it made me a better Crawl player overall. I started a Halfling Assasin after 100 or so - slam my head in the the wall - Xom sessions. I am now level 27 (the max) and am roaming around trying to pick up a few more runes before I go after the orb. Now that I have announced it to FOFC, I'm sure I'll die in the next 1000 turns by poking myself in the eyeball with a fork, but it is my best character to date. I am still trying the DsCk on my work computer but can't get past level 11 consistently.

The thing I like about this is that every game is really different - even starting with the same class and race. Admittedly that's partly due to Xom and all but if you start with the same build in DoD you, basically, have to play pretty much the same way.

Got greedy in an Ossuary - I realised that it wasn't going to go anywhere but I had to try anyway.
Code:
Not far from getting to 2000. Guy didn't have a lot going from him so it's weird that he's my most successful character to date. A potion of experience helped, admittedly. |

yeah I find it hard to resist going in those portals too, especially ones I haven't been in yet (come on wiz lab!), but I've pretty much ignored them in this challenge-just not enough good gear/fighting ability to risk it.

Good luck Lonnie! Yeah I'm still playing a challenge character, but have started a couple others just for sanity's sake. Have a nice ghoul monk and halfling hunter up. The halflings initial sling skill (level 6) with 30 or so +1 sling bullets is just crazy good for a starting character. Was thinking of suggesting a halfling assassin for the next one or a "pick you hunter weapon of choice" pick a halfling (sling), centaur (bow), and a species that starts out with darts and a bonus in throwing skill (kobold?) |

My best so far.
Code:
Got stuck in a couple open levels, was running from a yak and a troll that was on the way on the previous level and had something invisible on me that I could not shake or get good bearings on due to the open levels-kept summoning stuff in hopes they could take it out, but alas not to be. This was an interesting turn with the comp character-turned into more of a hybrid chaos knight/summoner with all the spellbooks I found, plus the box of beasts. Had no healing potions at the end, or teleport scrolls, had a ring of teleportation on that did not activate in time. This likely will be my best character for the comp. |

Your muscles are flexible, but weak (Str -1, Dex +1).
Your muscles are strong (Str +1). I like those mutations back to back, heh. I thought my last one was starting out to be a good one, killed an ogre really early and got 2 levels off that one kill (I think on dungeon level 2), had a fun time in a big room when Xom turned me into a dragon for a short while, but still died super early on like level 5 or something when I was having a bit of a hard time with a sky beast and xom summoned a few more bad guys to seal the deal. Its quite possible though that I only have the patience for bruisers, an assassin or ranger type would be interesting next, maybe something with a little more survivability than the mage but a little more finesse than the troll? |

30788 Eric the Head the Nimble (level 12, -8/82 (87) HPs)
Began as a Demonspawn Chaos Knight on Sept 1, 2011. Was a Plaything of Xom. Mangled by an alligator (16 damage) ... on Level 3 of the Lair of Beasts on Sept 3, 2011. The game lasted 03:54:40 (17899 turns). Nooooooo! Stupid Swamp of Doom. Never going in a swamp again. He had a +2 sling of fire and +6 bullets so he just kicked everyone's butt. Until he went in the swamp and got jumped on by a demon-summoning nutter. So basically ran away from him several times and should have just high-tailed it out the swamp there and then. But I wanted to kill him/find what was at the bottom of the swamp. Eventually common-sense prevailed but just too late. Then to be killed by an alligator, that resisted a paralysation ray? After killing multiple hydras. That's so wrong. The only other time I've been close to death was when I encountered a killer bee hive. That was nasty.

A new leader in the clubhouse, I believe. Those alligators are damn tough when you first meet them. Especially when you think it just another crocodile and then it takes a nice big chomp.

My best this time around is a 1071. Similar to the last one, I've been playing a *ton* of FM and League of Legends and my # of attempts here is a lot lower than it was with the first challenge. I'm glad we're doing them though, I'm getting to try out character types that I would rarely pick if I were just playing on my own.

I would recommend Mountain Dwarf Fighter, Spriggan Enchanger, or Merfolk Skald. Any of http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.ph..._for_beginners should be good.

I generally like stealthy characters with a bit of magic thrown in. Anyone have a problem with a Spriggan Stalker? They look a bit fragile but it looks like they'll shoot up in the relevent skills very quickly and, apparently, they're really quick. I don't want to pick anything that people won't have fun playing though so if that's considered too, well, anything (easy/hard/boring) then I'm open to change.

we can certainly try one-its a different way to play with the alchemy thrown in there-I much prefer the older version of the stalker than this version, but you wouldn't know anything about that. Spriggan is a very good choice for a stalker due to its lesser food requirements, speed, stealth, and magical skills. |

don't be so modest. Starting Crawl (or any roguelike if you are new to them) is very overwhelming-you have no idea of the "right" way to play, and each background plays differently. No idea what the mobs are and what they can do to you-especially the uniques, etc. And it only gets worse the deeper you go when you first start out. So it was a job well done. |
