Just got a call for a 2nd interview tomorrow at 3, I'm feeling confident on this one. I hope it goes well.

My girlfriend is graduating grad school on Dec 10th and moving in with me (she lives in NOLA right now, about 2 hours away) and she got her first interview set up today also. Could be a great day for us career wise.

Decided to go back to work, start my new job on the 17th. It was great to be home with my son for his first 9 months, and we are blessed we have the resources to allow me to do that, but I think I am ready to get back into the workforce. I was pretty lucky to get the second job I interviewed for and am excited to start.

I am a little stressed about putting Colin into daycare, but I think it is nothing more than the usual neurosis about that sort of thing from a parent. I know he will love it once he adjusts, which knowing him will likely be a quick process.

Been on the job for a month and I love it. Feels really great to be back working. I enjoyed my time with my son, but something was missing for sure. The company I work for is great and the people are great, I have had no trouble getting back into it and learning my new job.

Colin loves his daycare. We found a woman who cares for 5-6 kids from her home. It is a great loving enviorment. IMO much better than a daycare center.

The transition for my wife and I has been a bit of a challange and dinner time is a bit hectic and rushed since I usually cook and we like to eat around 6 and have Colin in bed around 7. I wish we could spend more time with him at night but that is life, and it is nice to have extra incom, almost all of which is going into savings and paying off bills. One thing that we have done that is nice is hired a cleaning lady, that gives us a lot more time on the weekend.

All in all things have been great, couldn't be happier.

Congrats Lathum.

My last update on here was right before the 2nd interview- thought it went well, but no go. Got a nice "no thank you" letter about a week after.

Still at my current job, had a good meeting with my current boss on the first of the year, got a good raise and went over what is expected / what I need to do- so I feel a lot better about it, the work still sucks, but at least I get paid more.

I start orientation at my new job today. I left my job of 5.5 years for a competitor due to being tired of the stress (related to certain employees). They tried to keep me by offering more money/change locations but I explained to them that I don't feel it's appropriate to basically threaten to quit to get my way at a job ("I'm going to quit unless you promote me/give me a raise/move me/etc...").

I'm really glad the whole hiring process is over as the waiting is the worst. 2 weeks of "where are you going" isn't a blast either.

But 2 weeks of no responsibility is.

Well, I am on the hunt now...nothing is official yet, we have 2 1/2 months off and they talked about RIF.

People are jumping ship and getting other jobs already....I may still have a job by default....BUT, I am seriously looking and may have another one lined up. We will see.

How would you feel if your team lead left. He recommended you to management for the position. You pretty much meet all of the requirements as far as experience, etc.

Boss tells you that your not quite ready to be a lead. They plan to hire someone outside the company, but over the next year they want to transition you into a lead role. They give you a 7% raise

Should the raise make me angry? It feels like payoff money in a way. So you feel I'm worth more money, but not more responsibility?

BTW, this is in a software development group. It will probably take some time for a new person to come in and learn the code base and how its put together. So, I'll also get to train the guy on the system.

Its frustrating, because hiring a developer outside, most likely from an agency is a big roll of the dice.

They give specifics on what skills you are missing that prevent you from being a lead along with a plan on how they will train you in those skills so you can be a lead a year from now? And if not their reaction to you asking those questions might answer your own questions...

They didn't, and I didn't ask at the time of the meeting I had, but when I get a chance, I will.

Stupid question but regardless, here goes: what is the best resume template to use? I haven't filled out a legit resume in years, and as I go through Word all of them seem way too fucking flashy to me. Perhaps I am just going crazy but isn't there a traditional resume template somewhere that is pretty safe to use with most industries?

Airhog,

I was in a similar position. Part of the issue is that they wanted to make some larger changes with-out having to have me be the face of those changes. It was a really frustrating year. A year where I pursued, to varying degrees, a couple of jobs that came up which were interesting to me. And then, as promised, I got the job bump in both responsibilities and salary.

To me the increase in pay is them trying to show they're serious about transitioning you to a lead role. They're willing to pay you more, for the same work, as the first part of a transition. My view might be tainted by the positive out come I experienced, but to me the raise feels more like a gesture of good faith rather than a pay-off.

Thats a good way to look at it. I think that part of my problem is that being upset about the decision has made me take a hard look at the things that are done that I don't like, and if I want to continue to work for a shop that does those things. And I don't foresee management changing their opinions about those things either. Either I live with them, or I go somewhere else

More money for the same responsibility seems like a win to me.

I kid I kid, I see your point. I agree with Gstlmack, find out what skills you need to work on, lay out a development plan with your boss and ask for regular check ins, developmental sessions.

If this is the case, and it's certainly possible, then they should be more than willing to discuss the transition process and any skills you need to acquire to make it official.

The best one for most is the basic chronological resume:

Objective Statement
Summary of Qualifications
Employment
Education
Licenses/Certifications

You don't need it to be fancy unless you're in graphic design. Times New Roman 10-12 point font.

Well, I was made a great offer, and I accepted a new position. Looks like I will be leaving my current job in a few weeks and step into a new role.

I'm going to work for a financial/banking startup thats close to hitting it out of the park I think.

Next generation banking software. Basically the product you would see as a bank customer if you used online banking.

But I have the interview tomorrow at 2 pm....I am nervous, it has been 4 years since I have had a job interview that was serious.

Good luck on the job hunt. Things are starting to pick up in Phoenix and it seems like a good time to look for something better (esp compared to the last couple years).

Vibes helped.

They called me today, I go in and meet on Monday...they are taking me out to lunch to meet with one of the owners and an engineer and then I am finalizing everything with them after lunch.

Won't say I am unofficially employed again yet.....that will be reserved for Monday after lunch.

Won't say I am unofficially employed again yet.....that will be reserved for Monday after lunch.

Does not surprise me in the least, you'd be surprised what the quality of your "competition" probably is. You were probably a breath of fresh air to them.

And today, I received my official offer.

I start at the new company in 14 days. Back to working at a small company, where I can prove myself instead of just being another cog in the machine.

Great base pay, great commission and it's back in true IT...hardware side....love it...
