My original post was "... just pick Christmas already, Bucc" but I thought I'd be nice.

Heh! I was wondering who'd pull that one off the second I saw a birthday category.

edit: And for what it's worth from the peanut gallery, despite the obvious controveries, it's a totally legitimate pick in my mind.

Except that scholars largely believe that a person existed that became the legend that is Jesus Christ. I think you could apply that individual to this category.

I think the only question is on the date -- no one really knows when this man was born. Most Christian holidays are designed around old pagan rituals to make people more comfortable when converting.

However, I told Bucc in PM that it was a legitimate pick. It's just a risky one for some voters.

It's not my draft, but I would think once you pick they're stuck.

I'd strongly recommened not allowing changes once the pick is posted.

Figuring out which categories to target first is a key stragegic element to these drafts. In a draft like this where there's some overlap (not to mention a wildcard category) it loses a lot of the fun if you can just move your picks around.

Shame Maple Leafs. I really wanted to see all Canadian dates. I bet this will be dominated by U.S. dates, and I just don't know those at all (not that I know Canadian dates well, but I'd be more interested in them).

Someday, I'll get one of the top 3 picks and make it easy. To me, the three most famous dates are 9/11, 7/4 and 12/7 plus 12/25 if you want the most anticipated holday of all time.

Well, Pearl Harbor was a Canadian date, they just still believe that crap about it being the Ja --

But I've said too much.

1.10 - Birthday: January 15, 1929 - Martin Luther King birthday

Quote from www3.kumc.edu/diversity/national/kingday.html

Quote:
King was born on January 15, 1929 and gained national prominence during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The boycott began when Rosa Parks, a 42 year old seamstress, refused to give up her seat to a white man on December 1, 1955. A Montgomery city ordinance at that time required black individuals to give up their seats to white individuals. The boycott lasted 381 days and served as the impetus in the creation of Southern Christian Leadership Conference. SCLC was founded by Dr. King and others in order to work for civil rights legislation.

From this point forward, King's name became virtually synonymous with the civil rights movement of the late 1950's and early 1960's. He was at the center of almost every major demonstration and was arrested many times. In April 1963, he composed Letter from the Birmingham Jail. Later that year, King delivered his most famous speech when he told participants in the March on Washington "I have a dream."

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is now one of the few true National Holidays celebrated by the United States, every third Monday of January, around the time of his birthday.

Next pick is something that might not be as popular as others, but its historical significance is unquestionable. Barely makes it in despite that Columbus crap.

2.1 - War: August 6, 1945 - The atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

The detonation of "Little boy" marks the first, and only one of two uses of Nuclear Weapons in the history of the world. Nine days later, Japan would surrender to the United States. It would usher in the atomic age, the Cold War, and fearful anticipation for the civilization-ending World War 3.

There are a few dates I'm surprised haven't been picked yet. It's going to be interesting to see how many of the dates I considered obvious 1st round picks slip into the later rounds.

For me, "events" are more important. If the choice is

a) an event I think is amazing but I don't remember when it was or
b) an event I know the date of but I don't find very significant

I'm going for (a).

OK, I'll say it... this is just an incredibly America-centric pick. Without denying it's impact, there have been so many disasters around the world that have been orders of magnitude worse that this pick seems out of place.

Yes, but how many have heard of most of them? It's a popular vote thing.

In my defense, I would have taken the Tsunami hands down but, the date was blocked.

That should have been Maple Leafs' pick.
