Yeah, I thought I wasn't going to like a lot about this team, but I really like the excitement level. Some of the young/new guys have really seemed to be a spark plug so far. I still have some questions about the pitching (questions that should improve when Wood and Prior return), but I'm really liking the possibilities.

They play good defense for the most part (despite the early errors from Cedeno) and have a little bit of speed. More than anything, though, it seems like this team will strike out a lot less than the Cubs teams of the past few years. Of course, that could change, but those are my early impressions.

Not saying I did either, but the Brewers have a decent team this yr, and I think they finished either at .500 or right around there last yr. With all their young talent they should only get better.

I expected their team to be competitive with all the youngsters and maybe start to gel late in the year, but a 5-0 start is surprising. But they have only played Pittsburgh and Arizona.

Well we just witnessed Joe Girardi's first rookie mistakes as manager...

First he takes Miguel Cabrera out for a pinch runner in the 8th inning of a tie game.

Then, still tied, bottom 9th, Mets up...Beltran walks, Delgado singles him over to 3rd, nobody out. A 20-year old rookie reliever pitching, with David Wright, who's the Mets best hitter and is killing the ball so far, coming up. You have to walk him there, and take your chances with X Nady (granted, he's also killing the ball, but play the percentages). The extra baserunner means nothing, and you set up a force at home.

Oh yeah...first pitch...Wright sends a deep sac fly to right. Game over.

Gonna be a long year for Marlins fans.

Saw that as well Logan. I did like however that he was pretty agressive on the bases with his guys. This team is gonna need to find any way to win, so being agressive will help. Glavine looked in pretty good form once again. Hopefully this is his "breakout" year with the Mets.

Good point. I always liked Girardi (and I can't say that about a lot of Yankees), so I hope he's successful. I'm sure he'll learn from today...and he'll learn a lot more from mistakes going forward. We went through some of those first-year manager groans last year with Willie, but he's been getting better too. If this isn't the Mets breakout year, I don't know when it will be. I pegged them for around 92 wins, and if there's some support at the back-end of the rotation, I could see them breaking 100. Let's hope.

Ugh - I'm not a Mets or Marlins fan, but I always find "aggressive" and "manufacturing" runs ends up being "run oneself out of innings and use stupid hit-and-runs" instead of building patiently. For your sakes, I hope not.

Funny you should say that...a good example was Friday night. Mets were up 9-1 in the top of the 8th, but Florida had the bases loaded with 2 outs. Mike Jacobs ripped a single to right, which ended up scoring 2, but Jeremy Hermeida tried going 1st to 3rd on the play. Nady threw to 3rd and got him out by about 10 feet. Inning over.

Sox 5-1 on the year, Schilling 2-0, Papelbon 3 saves (the guy throws serious heat).

Phillies are 1-5. Things don't look like they are going to get better anytime soon. Starting pitching has been bad, and the bullpen isn't much better.

I really wish they would just commit to the rebuilding effort in full rather than do it halfway.

Why would you bring Shizzy in the game when Looper was warm? Then let him walk the entire team?

If you're depending on Pooper, you're in some trouble.

Yes. His "shit" isn't all there yet. Wasn't there during the WBC and isn't quite here/there right now. Hopefully it doesn't take until July because I'd like to have some reason to watch the Twins this year*.

Haha. My thoughts exactly. Trust me MizzouRah, Looper is the last guy you want in the game. I can't believe anyone was willing to give him money to actually pitch, let alone the amount he got from the Cards.

Getting a win is great. Beating the Cardinals is even better. Sweeping them... Ahh, it's a very good night.

LaRussa is definitely in for a challenge with this bullpen, I think it will take a while to sort it all out.

LaRussa has already made some goofy ass calls. Pulls out Carpenter in the 6th the other night - loss - then brings Shizzy in last night in the 8th inning. Bah...

..and LaRussa, get Encarnacion out of the 2nd spot in the lineup.. how many more wiffs does he have to make before you notice he needs to move down in the lineup? Sheeeeshhh....

The Cub fans are a smilin today..

For a 23 year old rookie making his debut (on national TV vs the cards no less), Sean Marshall didn't look too shabby. Though he needs to work on not throwing the exact same first pitch to every batter he faces.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.

I still think the Cards will win the division this year, but after watching the series (I know, I know. Don't make judgments too early), they have more questions than I thought they'd have.

I think the most obvious one is the bullpen, but they've let a lot of quality guys get away. They're not as strong as they've been the past couple of years.

I actually like Encarnacion, but he's a decent replacement for Walker or Sanders, not both. They'll also miss Grudz at second and a couple of those bullpen guys who had been so steady the past couple of seasons.

Even though the middle of their line-up is as good as or better than any in the majors, the group as a whole isn't near as dominating as it's been.

I figured their bullpen would have issues this year anyway, but something about LaRussa (yeah, yeah 7th all time) really gets under my skin with his moves late in games sometimes.

It is early, but Juan is not looking very good... but either is Jimmy E.

We say this every year, BUT if the Cubs stay healthy... look out.

Actually, we want the WC and the NL to win the the All-Star game, that seems to be the recipe.

Rookie Brian Bannister looked good once again for the Mets, went 7 strong innings. Beltran hit a bomb, Wright knocks in another run. Looks like things just might be setting in for the Mets. If/when Floyd gets his bat going, and if we get any kind of offense out of Hernandez at 2B this lineup looks to be amazing. I know it's early yet, but so far so good.

Yeah, stuck at work, I was about to start unleashing my virulent hatred of Keith Foulke, but then I read the recap, that Wily Mo accidentally helped Catalanatto's homer over the right field fence, and it got lost behind the admiration of Jon "Someone set up us the" Papelbon.

Beckett wasn't at his greatest, bgut he was still damn good
