That's my guess. It is a big train.

And perhaps John Riggins for "Diesel"

So that's all of them. I looked to find a pattern by sport, but I couldn't come up with anything. I thought perhaps there's a "telephone game" kind of pattern, but again, couldn't make it work. It must have something to do with those file names, but I got nothing there.

bump.

Anyone got anything? I'm stumped. I think the letter/number combos indicate a cyper of some sort, perhaps which letter(s) of each name are to be used, but I can't figure it out at all.

I tried a couple of equations (L - 1 = K for instance) but didn't get very far. The thought was that if some of the resulting letters were M, A, Y, and we could find the correct way to get them in that order...but like I said, wasn't working.

The only other thought was that if the numbers were months (all under 12) and the letters were days (their numerical equivalents), they could be dates as expressed under the Euro convention. Worth exploring I guess, but not convinced.

Anyone think it is important that Jerome Bettis is the only one on this list still active?

Errr...Well in retrospect, this clue is deceiving. The 'may' reference was something I took out of the puzzle before posting ...what it should say is:

Don't be discouraged,
don't you fear.
When you find the 'fish',
the answer is near.

I believe cuervo was on the right track with his previous effort.

Fish = "LOOKINGATAREDHERRING", or something to that effect if I'm deciphering it right.

Basically I acted on the from Aaron to Williams clue and sorted the list into alphabetical order according to nickname. The above string is what appeared.

That's about where I left it a couple of days ago. The 'may' clue confused me a bit, but I guess I was on the right track - I just haven't duplicated my work yet (I didn't save the spreadsheet).

Possibly too simple, but the answer isn't a play off "near" is it. If you got the red herring message through the pictures, perhaps that has no relevance other than to tell us to go another way.

Heres a few thoughts, not sure if they are helpful.
1. A red herring is always a useless clue in most adventure games. Since enigma has told us we are close when we find the red herring, I believe we are on the right path.
2. I think there is something in the list that doesnt fit, and is the red herring, and is the anwser to the puzzle, or will lead us to the anwser.
3. The only other thought I have is the numbers are near the red herring, but im not sure that helps any.

From "Admiral" David Robinson

Nicknames are a part of sports
as much as "taters" or "slams".

Put them in alphabetical order according to nicknames and read the file names. Along with a message of "Looking at a Red Herring" (which IS the red herring), you'll see numbers that correspond to letters in the player names (L-1 for "MichaelJordan" = M, O-10 for "LanceAllworth" = O, etc)
String those letters together to get: "MORGANBENCHROSEPEREZ" -- What was the collective nickname of Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, Pete Rose & Tony Perez?

bigredmachine

Next puzzle will be up within a few days.

Ahh, tricky. Nice puzzle. I thought of pulling letters from the names, but dismissed it when I saw some of the numbers were larger than the length of the last names...didn't even occur to me to include the first names.
