Rio Olympics 2016: Russian diplomat tackles, kills robber near Olympic Park

We're not even at the opening ceremony yet and Russia just killed a guy.

"Russian Diplomat" might be a little click-baity when it´s really a local working for the russian consulate.

True. These news sites know that people are always Russian to conclusions...

To see how much points the US wins by.

France is the only team that can give the US a challenge.

I really don't see France being much of a threat to challenge US based on how they've been playing lately. They definitely look like less than the sum of their parts.

Well there's no other team then if France can't do it. Their starting five has four NBA players and the best Euroleague player.

Argentina is old as dirt and Spain doesn't have Marc Gasol.

I think that's 100% correct - there is no team that can give them a serious challenge. Going to be interesting to see what happens next Olympics, because a lot of the traditional powerhouses outside of the US are getting very, very old at the moment, and don't seem to have the stallions in the stable to replace their aging stars.

Yeah, but this is the USA v. China. Its kind of like the USA v. the USSR back in the day.

Although womens gymnastics is a bigger rivalry, I want to show China who is the best.

Beating them in gymnastics would be so much better. China knows they have no hope in basketball. The USA losing to China in Mens basketball would be similar to the Golden State Warriors losing to the Iowa Hawkeyes in basketball.

So much for France being the second best team. Can't understand taking a bunch of EuroLeague guys instead of Fournier. Surely his game is perfect for the international arena?

Was a great race. One of the best of the year. Such a shame for Nibali, who looked for all the world that he'd played it perfectly

Bogut converted 6 alley-oops if my count is correct. France just way overplayed the 3pt line and gave up back cut after back cut.

It's mind bogging how bad France execute on offense. A ton of turnovers and the only time they looked dangerous was the last 5 mins of the 2nd Q when Tony Parker basically played iso ball... and then they never really tried it again.

Start to the gymnastics (my guilty pleasure sport ) was pretty extreme. German Andreas Toba tearing his ACL in warmups and still going in the competition (yes, yes, it´s the discipline most suited for it but it´s still fucking heroic) and basically ensuring Germany reaching the final in the team competition, then the french guy breaking his everything in the leg

Also Nibali (cycling) breaking both collarbones, Porte and Henao also with bad injuries from falls. Nibali and Henao both were in the leading group with Majka. Terrific race overall, very unusual course for an olympic race, scenic as hell and great drama.

I get what you're saying but, honestly, if she's being ripped for socio-political reasons do we have to just ignore that here?

If she were being attacked for something that the left adores, I don't believe for a second we'd be asked to avoid defending her / villifying her attackers, so ...

These Olympic basketball games thus far have not been close. Figured Brazil/Lithuania would be a great game but Brazil looks lost and Lithuania is on fire.

USA womens basketball team will do more damage than the mens I think.

They brutalized Sengali and set the US olympic scoring record.

What do you mean more damage? They are both heavily favored to win the Gold. And the Senegal score was sort of expected. Books had USA 57 point favorites. A lot of other countries dont have the youth programs nor the size to compete with some of the richer and more populated countries in these Olympic sports. Sort of like sticking Winona State University out there to play Alabama in college football.

What I mean is the Womens team is going to blow out everyone. While the Mens team will see, maybe, one good opponent.

I understand all about youth programs.

And your winona st'alabama comparison is not a good one. I would say it was more like a HS team vs. Alabama.

Women could have put up 200 if they wanted.

Meh, Spain and Australia are good womens team. The USA will have to play well them games. The mens biggest obstacles will be Spain and Lithuania. Doubtful anyone but Spain on their best day could beat the USA men or womens.

I tell you what. When you have a 6"5" super star guard coming off the bench, there is no one that will be close.

This is the best womens team ever assembled. I would compare them to the 92 dream team as far as talent.

The 92 dream team would beat the women by 60, lol. I know what you meant just being silly.

You are probably right that it is the greatest womens team of all time I just find your reactions to a win over Senegal of all teams mildly funny. I mean Spain and Austrailia will probably beat them by 50 easily as well. Its not like this lopsided win over Senegal is a landmark victory in this history of US Womens hoops.

It just seems to be relevant since that's the dominant headline about it after, oh, the first ten minutes or so that followed "U.S. wins first gold of Games" (otherwise I wouldn't have the slightest idea what was even being discussed)

It isn't like the FOFC politicized it in a vacuum or something, that's what I'm getting at. If that's the trending storyline about it then that's just what it is.

The Olympics are at least as much a pop culture event as an athletic one, have been for some number of years now. Just seems unrealistic to think that aspect can be ignored when it arises.
