Here is my next pick since Colt is not eligible to make this selection.

12.4 Nerfititi- Woman, Ancient Times.

The Sun Queen was married to Akhenaten and mother in law to the most famous Egyptian Phaeroh Tutankhamun. Nerfitit had a major influence on religion, politics and future leaders of Egypyt. She and her husband changed Egypts religion from a polytheistic religion, to a monotheistic religion. Some have called her the most influential woman in Egyptian history. She was also immortalized in Egyptian culture for her beauty and was long considered the most beautiful woman to ever live.

She also had a huge effect on today's lingo. In ancient times, men could would comment on what a nice pair of Nefertiti's a woman had. This became shortened in later terminology.

Have you read Michelle Moran's novel?

No, I looked it up just now though. Seems like it could be a good read, though not generally the type of book I would read.

I found it a pretty decent read. Not earth-shattering or anything, but a pleasant one.

12.3 Christopher Wren - Artist - 1600s

I assume great architects fall under this category. Wren was a leading architect of his day and his best work, St. Paul's Cathedral, survived the London fire of 1666.

Yes, probably, but at this late stage I didn't think it mattered as much. Still, there's 3 good names from that era left I think, probably more.

Must be something weird going on. I also had Internet issues today (well, yesterday now). So both moderators were out today.

We're still almost to the end, though, which is terrific. Eight more picks to go! Let's see if we can get it done today (Sunday), so I can post the voting thread to start off the week.

Remember that some people can fit multiple categories. For example, Jackie Robinson could probably fit as a cultural icon.

I'm interested to find out if the person I am picking next is the person Spleen considered taking and never did in the first couple of rounds. I have Classical Age and women left. Since I'm the only person left with a classical age, I don't think it hurts to say that.

Izulde still hasn't checked in??? That is odd. The last PM I have from him says that he will make his Scribe pick when he gets back from a work meeting.

I have internet again, hopefully for good this time...I was able to latch onto a public wireless signal, so I've got my fingers crossed that nothing happens with it until we can get someone out here to get ours working again...

Michael Jackson as a Cultural Icon was who I was thinking about.

Do you have the only era pick left as well? Is it possible someone ahead of you could make your choice for another category besides Sportsman? I am really not a big fan of voting ahead and haven't enjoyed it when others did it to this point. If era and category are both clear and free, then go ahead. If not, and you're certain you won't be here later, I would send the pick and a backup choice to me and olie instead.

Or, come to think of it, you could go ahead and post it, but be forewarned, that person is still in play for others to choose, and if they do, then you'll have to chnage your pick.

12.5 - Junot Diaz - Scribe (2000s-Present)

It has only been eight years into the 2000s and so this selection should not be about those writers who have accomplished their peak in prior decades, but about a young, rising star who has already achieved significant acclaim.

Enter Diaz, whose short story collection Drown was an overnight sensation, a series of interconnected short stories chronicling the Dominican-American immigrant experience. The relatively recently released The Brief Life of Oscar Wao won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize and at just 39 years old, Diaz's future for a long, productive career of best-selling literature seems quite bright.

12.6 Rustichello da Pisa - Scribe (Middle Ages)

He was the scribe for one of the most popular and famous books of the Middle Ages: The Travels of Marco Polo.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travels_of_Marco_Polo

The Travels was a rare popular success in an era before printing.
The impact of Polo's book on cartography was delayed: the first map in which some names mentioned by Polo appear was in the Catalan Atlas of Charles V (1375), which included thirty names in China and a number of other Asian toponyms.[4] In the mid-fifteenth century the cartographer of Murano, Fra Mauro, meticulously included all of Polo's toponyms in his map of the world. Marco Polo's description of the Far East and its riches inspired Christopher Columbus's decision to try to reach Asia by sea, in a westward route. A heavily annotated copy of Polo's book was among the belongings of Columbus.

I think most of us have picks like that...it's part of the challenge of limiting us to one pick per era and only one category pick. Makes it fun. Your list has some impressive names.

I sincerel;y apologize for delaying us so badly. I had a one on one matchup with a new Vanity and sink in the bathrom today and it went almost 7 rounds (aka hours) and 6 trips to home depot...but I finaly achieved VICTORY!!!, well a minor one at least. I still have to somehow mount it to the wall or floor to stabilize it a bit.

ANYWAY

12.8 Pierre-Augusta Renior, Artist, 1800's

And with that my Draft is done, YAY!

There are some really fabulous late round picks...it would be a shame after all that hard work if all the draft picks weren't voted upon...i can't believe the erudition required to come up with a person to match the time frame VOTE ON EVERYBODY!!!

12.9 William Penn , good person 1700s

Founded the colony of Pennsylvania. He was one of the first great heroes of American liberty. When Protestants persecuted Catholics, Catholics persecuted Protestants, and both persecuted Quakers and Jews, Penn established an American sanctuary which protected freedom of conscience.

Almost everywhere else, colonists stole land from the Indians, but Penn traveled unarmed among the Indians and negotiated peaceful purchases. He insisted that women deserved equal rights with men. He gave Pennsylvania a written constitution which limited the power of government, provided a humane penal code, and guaranteed many fundamental liberties.

The French philosopher Voltaire, a champion of religious toleration, offered lavish praise. "William Penn might, with reason, boast of having brought down upon earth the Golden Age, which in all probability, never had any real existence but in his dominions. "

LWSFS's final pick

12.9 William Penn - Good Historical Person (1700's)

From LWSFS:

Founded the colony of Pennsylvania. He was one of the first great heroes of American liberty. When Protestants persecuted Catholics, Catholics persecuted Protestants, and both persecuted Quakers and Jews, Penn established an American sanctuary which protected freedom of conscience.

Almost everywhere else, colonists stole land from the Indians, but Penn traveled unarmed among the Indians and negotiated peaceful purchases. He insisted that women deserved equal rights with men. The French philosopher Voltaire, a champion of religious toleration, offered lavish praise. "William Penn might, with reason, boast of having brought down upon earth the Golden Age, which in all probability, never had any real existence but in his dominions. "

Although little is known about the women, she is perhaps the most famous women in the world. Christians believe she was a virgin when she conceived Jesus of Nazareth.

Okay, two picks left, and we know BK already has his pick. So just need spleen to check in, and then BK and we're set.

I am away at work all day tomorrow (both jobs), so no voting thread tomorrow, although I will get it up tomorrow night.

12.12 Roger Federer - Sportsman (2000-Present)

I could list his 12 Grand Slam titles or the fact that he's been the #1 ranked player since 204 for a record 231 weeks. Instead though I'll sum him up this way: He's been the Tiger Woods of Tennis.
