If Larry can hurry up and make his pick, I can post Colt's before I leave and it should run fairly smoothly after that

I'm running out for a while. Here is my pick since Colt cant take him.

8.4 Nikola Tesla- Intellectual, Pre-WWII 20th cent

Considered by many to be the man who Invented the modern world. Tesla was one of histories most original and greatest inventors and thinkers. Some of his contributions include AC power, the Radio, Radar, X-Rays, Automobile ignition system, wireless communications and many others. Even today, many of his theories are still being proven.

8.5 Confucius - Intellectual (Classical)

One of the greatest philosophers of all time and one whose codes and edicts are heavily in use today, particularly people and even the occasional government or two in Far East Asia in countries such as China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, etc. It has also influenced and blended in with the major religions of those countries.

His is a world view that emphasizes morality, ethical behavior in relationships, and meritocracy in leadership among other things is a truly inspired one, with lessons and ideas for people of any nation or culture to draw and learn from.

Nice pick although it means I'm not drafting my classic era person until the 12th round now. This is the era that I thought had a lot of famous intellectuals including Euclid (founder of Geometry), Archimedes, Plato, and Socrates.

I can see where some people would consider him a religious figure, but for me, he's a philosopher whose philosophy happens to go well with various religions and he's not a religious leader as such.

I agree but the category doesn't strictly imply religious "leader", just one who has huge impact on peoples through religion. Confuciusm certainly has.

agree. in fact he is pretty anti-Buddhist. he basically took 1 part of the 8 folded path, right action, and ignored the rest. the practice is for purely earthly happiness.

8.6 King David - Cultural (Ancient Age)

He is depicted as a righteous king—although not without fault—as well as an acclaimed warrior, musician and poet (he is traditionally credited with the authorship of many of the Psalms).

The Psalms are perhaps the most widely read literature in the history mankind (or something like that). The cultural impact of the Psalms, plus the stories of David and his kingship, have been enormous throughout Western Civilization; not to mention an inspiration for many artist, musicians and scribes.

If it's Joe Louis, the boxer, he should definitely be listed from 1900-Pre WWII.

Nicely done, though I personally would've put him in the religious category. I didn't even think of him until I saw this I'll admit.

He could've gone in several categories, esp. Ruler since he did unite the tribes. But I was thinking more along the lines of his impact throughout history and one can point to culture more than anything else.

8.7 Frank Lloyd Wright, Artist, 1900-39

Wright promoted organic architecture, was a leader of the Prairie School movement of architecture, and developed the concept of the Usonian home.
Already well-known during his lifetime, Wright was recognized in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects as "the greatest American architect of all time"

As a person who often has difficulty getting up stairs, I appreciate him

I thought it was the person's life time and not necessarily the time in which they actually did things. I was trying to employ a little strategy, I should have consulted with Chief Rum. If he objects I will change it.

That is cutting awfully close. Nothing wrong with the categories, the voters might think otherwise.

It's tricky for the Sportsman category. For everything else, the person pretty much did their thing for the entirety of their life, and fit into the category you put them in until their death. But for sportsman, they were done being a Sportsman by their 40s. FWIW, Joe Louis did stay in the spotlight and was a relevant pop culture identity for most of his life, appearing on game shows, at pro wrestling shows, etc. (mainly because he owed so much in taxes and needed every paycheck he could find).

8.8 Frank Sinatra, Musician, (WWII 1940-1959)

His eyes earned his nickname, but his singing made him famous, "Ol' Blue Eyes" voice is as easily recognizable on the airwaves as his face is on the big screen. His music is played still today on dedicated radio stations, in specially themed cofee shops and in every casino in Las Vegas.

8.9, Jessie Owens, Sportsman, 1901-wwii

At the 1936 Berlin Olympic games, Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals (in the 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter relay and the long jump) , set two Olympic records, and tied another. This humiliated Hitler. Owens' victories were an affront to Hitler's racial theories - Hitler had assumed that the "Aryans" (the Germanic race) would easily win.

8.10 Franklin D Roosevelt (WWII-1959) – Ruler/Diplomatic Leader

He helped America get back on track to prosperity after the Great Depression. He was also the president of the United States at one of the most pivotal points in history. If it weren't for some of his decisions, we could have been living in a very different world. He was also elected to more terms as President then any other person in American history.

Gone longer than expected, but it seems I only missed one pick.

For me, it was between Charles Dickens or another as my 1800s scribe. Both have importance for different reasons. I went with Dickens because the quality of his work, and the everlasting appeal of A Christmas Carol. A very important literary figure of the period.

This was going to be my #2 pick. I was pretty sure early on that he would get picked pretty quick. Now is as good a time as any to pick him.

8.11 Michael Jackson - Musician (1960s-1970s)

The seventh child of the Jackson family, he debuted on the professional music scene at the age of eleven as member of The Jackson 5. Jackson later began a solo career in 1972; he became a pop icon and was named the "King of Pop" in subsequent years. Five of his solo studio albums have become some of the world's best-selling pop records: Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995).

Jackson became a dominant figure in popular music in the late 1970s as the first black entertainer to amass a strong crossover following on MTV. The popularity of his videos aired on MTV, such as "Beat It" and "Billie Jean", helped bring the relatively young channel to fame; videos such as "Black or White" and "Scream" made Jackson a staple on MTV into the 1990s. He transformed the music video into both an art form and a promotional tool. Jackson popularized physically complicated dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk. His distinctive musical sound and vocal style influenced numerous hip hop, pop, and contemporary R&B artists.

Jackson has donated and raised several hundred million dollars for beneficial causes through his Dangerous World Tour, charity singles and support of thirty-nine charities. However, other aspects of his personal life have generated significant controversies, including his plastic surgery, lightening skin tone due to vitiligo and eccentric behavior that have damaged his public image. He was accused of child sexual abuse in 1993, although the matter was settled out of court. In 2005, Jackson was tried and later acquitted of further child molestation allegations and several other charges. He has been the subject of long-term financial difficulties and health concerns.

Jackson is one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. His awards include eight Guinness World Records, including one for Thriller as the world's best-selling album, thirteen Grammy Awards, thirteen number one singles in his solo career—more than any other male artist after the creation of the Hot 100—and the sale of over 750 million units worldwide. Jackson's highly publicized personal life, coupled with his successful career, has made him part of popular culture for almost four decades.

I have a question in regards to scoring. Do the judges ranking everyone from each category from 1-12? For example, if a person received 2 12's and 2 11's, he would get a score of 11.5

Or do they give a score that they see fit?

My plan was to just take rank picks. Who's your top pick, or top three or whatever. Then tabulate it all on a point basis. I'm sure some voters will get in depth to it, but, IMO, too much depth will scare most voters away.
