OK guys, I'm here and caught up - absolutely slammed at work this morning, I've been on for an hour and just managed to read through the picks from last night and get everything on my sheet. I have picks from Larry McG, Racer and Izulde, but nothing from Noop/DT who is up with 5.12 and 6.1...hopefully one of them will get here soon...

6.3 - Judas Iscariot- Evil Historical Person - Classical Age

He may not have the evilness you would term with Nazi Germany or serial killers, but Judas' single traitorous act will stand the test of time. His name has become synonymous with betrayal.

I sent you an updated list with some parameters. What can I say, I'm a draft nerd. I should be around until about 3 or 4 pm though.

Is it to late to change the year because I just copied and pasted from my list without thinking because I have a different one on my desk top. I want to change Jefferson to 1700's

I'm going to email Chief for a decision on that, there have been a few picks since your took TJ, so I'm not sure how he'll feel about that. I'll let you know...

Danny's Pick:

6.4 George S. Patton- Military Leader, WWII (1939) -1950s

I'm actually using two tables to chart picks and unless I were to take an intellectual or a sportmen with my next pick, I can't. Amazingly, we have yet to draft someone from the same category.

OK - I talked to Chief about Noops changing the date for TJ, he doesn't have a problem with it as long as no one else who has picked since that pick (5.12) has a problem with it. Speak now or forever hold your peace...

Izulde's Pick:

6.5 King Louis XIV of France - Ruler/Diplomat (1600s)

Solidified the power of the monarchy in France and created a strong centralized government in a nation that had previously been prone to intrigues, plotting by the Dukes and other high-ranking officials, some very high ranking.

Called the Sun King, his court was a magnificient and splendid one, in keeping with the growing majesty of France as during Louis's reign, the dominant power in Europe shifted from Spain to France as a result of the Thirty Years' War and a subsequent war against the Spanish that saw the French take significant territory from the Spanish.

He was also a great patron of the arts, much as Catherine the Great was, and one of the most notable periods of the rich French literary tradition occurred during his rule.

Legal and economic reforms, some carried out by Louis himself, others by his wisely chosen officials, led to greater prosperity for France and the Code Louis was to have a direct influence on the later, more famous Napoleonic Code.

French colonization also skyrocketed during the 1600s as England and France replaced Spain and Portugal as the dominant colonial powers.

Louis XIV's influence was so great that other monarchs began patterning themselves and their courts after him and his palace of Versailles, with its famed Hall of Mirrors, was one of the most highly regarded estates in all of Europe, the court culture, as previously noted, of such acclaim that others copied it.

Been doing yardwork all morning. I'll come up with some and then my brother gave me some choices for his pick since he's teaching until 12:30 PST.

larrymcg, when I chose Jordan, I had a debate between him or Woods.

6.6 Blackbeard (Edward Teach) - Evil, 1700s

However, colorful legends and vivid contemporary newspaper portrayals had him committing acts of cruelty and terror. One tale claims he shot his own first mate, saying "if he didn’t shoot one or two crewmen now and then, they’d forget who he was." Another legend is that having had too much to drink, he said to his crew, "Come, let us make a hell of our own, and try how long we can bear it." Going into the ship's hold, they closed the hatches, filled several pots with brimstone and set it on fire. Soon the men were coughing and gasping for air from the sulphurous fumes. All except Blackbeard scrambled out for fresh air. When Blackbeard emerged, he snarled, "Damn ye, ye yellow-bellied sapsuckers! I'm a better man than all ye milksops put together!"[5] According to Captain Charles Johnson's A General History of the Robberies & Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates:
Before he sailed upon his adventures, he married a young creature of about sixteen years of age . . . and this I have been informed, made Teach's fourteenth wife . . . with whom after he had lain all night, it was his custom to invite five or six of his brutal companions to come ashore, and he would force her to prostitute herself to them all, one after another, before his face.

AENeuman's pick

6.7 St. Francis Assissi, Good Person, Middle Ages

It is said that one day while Francis was traveling with some companions they happened upon a place in the road where birds filled the trees on either side. Francis told his companions to "wait for me while I go to preach to my sisters the birds".[21] The birds surrounded him, drawn by the power of his voice, and not one of them flew away. Francis spoke to them:
My sister birds, you owe much to God, and you must always and in everyplace give praise to Him; for He has given you freedom to wing through the sky and He has clothed you…you neither sow nor reap, and God feeds you and gives you rivers and fountains for your thirst, and mountains and valleys for shelter, and tall trees for your nests. And although you neither know how to spin or weave, God dresses you and your children, for the Creator loves you greatly and He blesses you abundantly. Therefore… always seek to praise God.

St. Francis Assissi is a great pick for that category. One of the most well known saints because of his love of nature and caring disposition.

The pirate Blackbeard was a clever pick as well. Evil is a very versatile category.

6.9 Robin Hood Cultural Icon Middle Ages

One of the first liberal democrats. Definitely not a believer in supply side economics. His actions undoubtedly would have made Walter Mondale proud. He stole from the rich and gave to the poor.

The Scottish historian John Major, writing in 1521, maintained that Robin Hood was active in 1193-4, at the time of John's attempted coup against Richard, and it is possible to construct an argument which supports this.

On 25th July 1225, the royal justices held an assize at York. When the penalties were recorded in the Michaelmas roll of the Exchequer, they included 32s. 6d. for the chattels of one Robert Hod, fugitive. The account was carried forward into the following year, when he had acquired the nickname of 'Hobbehod', and indicates that he had been a tenant of the archbishopric of York.

Robin was active in the 1190s, an outlaw by 1225, dead by 1247 and a legend by 1261.

6.10 Galileo Galilei (1600s) – intellectual

He contributed greatly to the development of modern science. According to wikipedia, he has been called the “Father of Modern Physics”, the “Father of Science”, the “Father of Modern Science”, and the “Father of modern Observational Astronomy”. He is known for the telescope, his contributions to understanding the solar system better, and his work in kinematics.

I had him high on my list but I already selected an intellectual.

I actually was going to draft him last time around until I realized another era had quite a few famous intellectuals in which only one other person and me could still draft an intellectual in. I would have passed on him again until I realized that era has a bunch of other famous people too.

Racer took the last Intellectual on my list. I wondered if he would stick around to make it back to me in Round 8. Anyway, here is one of the 2 guys I was hoping would make it back to him. Luck me, they did.

6.11 Geoffrey Chaucer - Scribe (Middle Ages)

Although he wrote many works, he is best remembered for his unfinished frame narrative The Canterbury Tales. Sometimes called the father of English literature, Chaucer is credited by some scholars as being the first author to demonstrate the artistic legitimacy of the vernacular English language, rather than French or Latin.

Had to read that book for class. I hated the Knights Tale with a passion. Wife of Bath and Miller's tale were the most enjoyable to me.
