Arizona, 1960-1961
After a long off season to think it over, I decided to stay at Arizona for another year. The AD kept me on, but his message to me has changed for the worst: Code:
I guess I get much more leeway with such a poor program. I keep my coaching staff intact again this year. Scheduling. I go for all cupcakes…I guess that is what the teams I scheduled were thinking too. Code:
Recruiting. We have 2 scholarships to offer this year. SF and SG look to be our most pressing needs, but the need is not that great this year, so we can stray from that if there is someone who looks like a good fit here. We are able to land the SG we have been heavily recruiting. SG Cyril Goddard is from Tucson, AZ. He is only a 2 star recruit and not ranked at all Regionally, however, he is an Arizona All-American, and from what my scouts tell me, he fits our program perfectly. Code:
We are also targeting a great looking point guard.

Arizona Roster
Centers 50 Joel Davenport C Jr 6' 9" 236 Scottsdale, AZ Joel gets the start at Center for the second year in a row, thanks to his great defense and very solid rebounding talent. His offense is still way behind the curve, but we already have a very good scoring threat in the post, so we can manage. 34 Ali Fink C So 6'10" 234 Tucson, AZ Fink is the second backup player off the bench at the post positions. He will backup both the PF and C positions. I don’t expect to get him too much playing time this year. 55 Brian Shuster C Fr 6'10" 240 Weaverville, CA Brian is way down on the depth chart. He is about the same quality player as Fink, but has no experience yet, so he will be the third big man off the bench. Power Forwards 53 Grant Weber PF Sr 6'10" 265 Eloy, AZ Grant gets the start at PF again this year. This will be his third year as a starter, although he has had academic problems in the past. He is a legit scoring threat in the post, and his defense would be considered average. He is also average on the boards. He starts because of his offense, primarily. 2 Andrew Collier PF So 6'10" 266 Millbrae, CA Andrew is a very solid player and will most likely be starting next year. For now he is our main backup at the two post positions. 23 Eric McIntyre PF Fr 6'10" 254 Plain City, UT Eric gets a red shirt this year. Small Forwards 30 James Millsaps SF Jr 6' 8" 241 San Diego, CA James get the start at SF for the 3rd year. On defense, he struggles on the inside, but does a fine job on the perimeter. On offense he can score from anywhere on the court. 44 Eberhard Kreckel SF Jr 6' 7" 240 Weimar, Germany Kreckel plays some amazing defense inside and outside. Normally, I would start him, but I need him to backup both the SF as well as the PG positions. He will see a good amount of court time. 52 Romeo Knight SF So 6' 7" 220 Ennis, MT Romeo plays like a SG, and will probably see most of his time backing up that position this year. Shooting Guards 51 David Kieffer SG Fr 6' 1" 176 Broadus, MT Maybe against my better judgement, I give the freshman the start at SG this year. He plays the best defense out of all of my guards, and he has a fine looking offensive game as well. Point Guards 5 John Bates PG Sr 6' 0" 176 Bayard, NM Bates has the best shot according to my scouts, but his defense is way behind, and I cannot give him the start because of that. He will backup the point. 24 Clinton McCrary PG So 6' 0" 196 Apache Junction, AZ Clint gets the start again at the point. He is my best perimeter defender. His offense is coming around very nicely as well. 35 Alexander Landis PG Fr 6' 3" 191 Ogden, UT Alex gets a red shirt this year. Same strategy as past year. If it doesn’t work, why change it? We are running a man to man defense and will help out Weber on the inside when needed. We will try to press on occasion this year. We will run at a medium pace, but possibly pick up the pace and press more if that is not working, since we have some decent depth this year. Weber and the freshman, Keiffer are the go to guys on offense.

November 13, 1960
Arizona (0-0) at Mississippi (0-0) Our defense played great in the season opener, but the offense was almost non-existent. Seems like a repeat of last season. We lost, 57-44. Weber led us in scoring with 16 points, while Millsaps added 10. Code:
November 17, 1960 Arizona (0-1) at Kent State (1-0) We play maybe the best defense I have ever coached and we pick up a 63-37 victory. Kieffer, the freshman, led the team in scoring with 17 points today. Millsaps added 11. I am not too concerned with our out of conference results, but I want to see us do the things we need to do in order to win in our conference. Code:
November 22, 1960 Arizona (1-1) at Miami-Ohio (1-2) We lose a close one on the road today, 55-51. The defensive effort is still there every game. We just may need to tweak what we do on offense though. Millsaps led us with 16 points and Keiffer added a dozen. Weber has been quiet the past two games. Code:
November 27, 1960 Arizona (1-2) at Ball State (0-2) The offense is still a non-factor in our games. We drop this one, 62-43. Millsaps led the team in scoring with 16 and Keiffer added 10. Davenport grabbed 11 boards. Weber is getting into a lot of foul trouble and it is affecting his offensive game. Code:

December 2, 1960
Arizona (1-3) at Toledo (2-1) I added Millsaps to my list of go to guys, and lowered Weber’s playing time just a bit. I don’t know if that did the trick, or if this was a fluke, but we had the best offensive game of the year, and we won, 74-52. Weber finally broke out of his shell and led the team with 23 points. Millsaps came up huge as well with 22 of his own. Code:
December 7, 1960 Western Carolina (3-4) at Arizona (2-3) Our offense was pretty good again today, in our home opener of the season, but suddenly our defense, previously ranked #2 in the nation, just gave up. We lost at home, 78-68. McCrary had a season high 18 points for us. Millsaps added 15. Millsaps has become our leading scorer, which is a surprise, since I though he would be 3rd, or maybe 2nd on the team. Code:
December 12, 1960 Arizona (2-4) at Memphis (1-6) We get back to basics today and take care of Memphis on the road, 59-52. Weber had a game high 22 points and Keiffer added 10 for us. Millsaps was ice cold shooting today, finished with just 2. Code:
December 16, 1960 Arizona (3-4) at Charlotte (0-8) We play a great game today and beat a truly terrible Charlotte team on the road, 82-62. That evens up our season record at 4-4. Millsaps rebounded from his worst game, with one of his best ever. He scored 24 points to lead all scorers. Weber added 19 and 7 boards. Code:
December 20, 1960 East Carolina (1-9) at Arizona (4-4) We get just our second home game of the year, and we blow it in overtime today, 84-83. A 27 point effort from Weber goes to waste. Knight and Kreckel both scored in double figures off the bench and Kieffer added 10 points. Code:
December 24, 1960 Purdue (3-5) at Arizona (4-5) We wrap up our out of conference schedule at 5-5 on the year with a solid 68-47 victory at home, our first home win of the year. We had 5 players score in double figures, led by Weber with 15 and Millsaps with 13. Kieffer, McCrary and Kreckel all scored 10. Code:
December 29, 1960 Arizona (5-5) at Washington (8-2) This is a pretty tough way to open the conference schedule, but my guys give me a great surprise here as well pull off the 77-74 upset on the road! Millsaps had a career day with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Weber added 16 points, McCrary had 12 and even Davenport chipped in with 10 points and 9 boards. Code:
December 30, 1960 Arizona (6-5) at Washington State (8-2) If you told me I would go 1-1 in the state of Washington, I would have taken it, and that is exactly what we did. We played competitive here, but still lost, 67-57. Millsaps led us with 16 points and Weber added 15. Davenport had 12 boards. Code:
Recruiting. The Point Guard we were after failed to qualify for college. On a whim, I offered that other scholarship to the #12 ranked player in the country, who is from Tuscon, Arizona. You never know, and it could turn this program around, even though the chances of signing him is probably around 1%.

January 5, 1961
Arizona (6-6) at UCLA (6-5) Our main backup in the post, Andrew Collier has been placed on academic suspension for the month of January. We drop this road game, 57-49, and fall to 1-2 in the league, although they have all been road games. Weber led us with 14 points and Millsaps added 11. Code:
January 7, 1961 Arizona (6-7) at Southern California (3-9) I thought we might be able to steal this game, but we were never really in it, losing 70-59. Weber’s nice game went to waste. He scored 19 points and 13 rebounds. Millsaps added 18 points and Davenport grabbed 10 boards, although he was shutout on the scoreboard. Code:
January 14, 1961 Arizona State (6-8) at Arizona (6-8) We get our first home game of the conference schedule, and pick up a huge win over our in state rivals, 74-57. Weber comes up huge again with 25 points and 10 rebounds. This is his second big game in a row. Hopefully he will continue turning it on. Davenpost had a complete game for once with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Millsaps and Knight both added 10 points. Code:
January 19, 1961 Arizona (7-8) at Arizona State (6-9) We end up splitting the season series with the Sun Devils as we lose on the road 79-60. Weber scored 15 points and Millsaps added 14. Code:
January 26, 1961 Arizona (7-9) at California (12-4) It seems all we do is play on the road in the conference, but today we are able to pick up another huge road win against one of the top teams in the league. In overtime, we pull off the 78-77 upset! Weber led all scorers with 20 points. Millsaps added 16 , McCrary had 13 and Kieffer chipped in with 10. Code:
January 28, 1961 Arizona (8-9) at Stanford (7-10) We stay on the road for the 7th time in 8 conference games, and pull off another huge win, 78-72. We are in great shape with a majority of games at home now. In fact 8 of our final 10 are at home. Weber continues to impress with 20 points and 11 boards today. Davenport cleaned up on the boards as well with 13. Millsaps scored 18 and Knight added 10 off the bench. We are now 4-4 in league play. Code:
January Recruiting. That SF decided to go to Santa Clara, so we are back at square one to fill that last scholarship.

Stanford (7-11) at Arizona (9-9) For the first time in I don’t know how many years, we are above 500 in conference play. We get it done in style today, 70-44. Millsaps led us with 18 points and Weber was right behind him with 16 of his own. Davenport chipped in with 8 and 13 rebounds. Code:
February 4, 1961 California (14-5) at Arizona (10-9) Cal is just a half a game out of first place, but we out score them in a real old fashioned shootout, 91-83. Weber continues to put up MVP type numbers. Today he had 23 points and 14 rebounds. McCrary was great, scoring 20 points of his own. Millsaps added 17 and Kieffer chipped in with 10. Code:

February 9, 1961
Southern California (8-13) at Arizona (11-9) Just as things as going great for us, we lay a big egg at home today and lose 71-50. Weber fouled out of the game with only 5 points. Millsaps led the team with 14 points and Collier added 11 off the bench. Code:
February 11, 1961 UCLA (12-10) at Arizona (11-10) We pick up a 10 point victory today, 62-52, to move to 7-5 in league play. A loss would have dropped us back to 500 in league play. Millsaps led us with 15 points while Weber and McCrary each scored 13. Code:
February 16, 1961 Arizona (12-10) at Oregon State (13-9) Oregon State holds the lead in the PAC 10 and they showed us why today, pounding us 86-36. We had no good performances to speak of today. That tends to happen when you lose by 50. Code:
February 18, 1961 Arizona (12-11) at Oregon (4-19) We hit a two game slide with a 66-62 loss today. That puts us at 500 overall and in conference play as well. Millsaps led the team in scoring with 17 points. McCrary added 14 and Weber had 13. Code:
February 23, 1961 Oregon (5-19) at Arizona (12-12) We have 4 games to go this year. All of them are at home. Two are against the top 2 teams in the conference and the other two are against 2 teams in the bottom tier of the conference. We need to go 2-2 to finish at 500. I want to go 3-1, but that means we need to take care of business against Oregon and Washington and pull an upset against either Oregon State or Washington State. And all those aspirations go up in smoke as we lose to the last place team for the second game in a row. Today’s score was 64-62. Weber’s 24 point game went to waste. Code:
February 25, 1961 Oregon State (15-10) at Arizona (12-13) We drop another game at home, 55-46 and now we need to win out to finish at 9-9. Weber scored 16 and that was about all we got on offense. Code:

Washington (15-11) at Arizona (12-14) Grant Weber was suspended for this month due to academics. That is going to make our job even tougher. Our season hopes are dashed by two points today, 63-61. Millsaps and Davenport both scored 12 points. Code:
March 4, 1961 Washington State (19-8) at Arizona (12-15) So, one of our best seasons in about 4 or 5 years might end up being my last one here. We lose, 66-53 and finish 7-11 in conference play. At least we get to go to the PAC 10 tournament as the 8 seed. Code:

First Round Highlights
Every single one of the 1, 2, 3 and 4 seeds won their opening games and advanced into the second round of the tournament. That might be more rare than a #1 seed getting knocked off in the first round. Notables: #5 New Mexico State, #6 Bradley, #5 San Diego State, #6 Valpo, #12 Lafayette, #7 Maryland, #6 Bethune, #5 Utah, #6 Clemson Second Round Highlights What an amazing run for those top 4 seeds in each Region. Heading into the Sweet 16, only two of the top 16 teams in the tournament have lost. In the West Region, #3 Harvard was knocked off by #6 Bradley. In the Midwest Region, #5 San Diego State beat #4 Santa Clara. No ‘others’ to report as we have only 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 seeds in the Sweet Sixteen!

Final Four
NIT Results: St. Bonaventure beats Indiana State. The Match Ups #1 Sacramento State vs. #2 Weber State #2 Wichita State vs. #1 Duquesne In Game 1, the high scorer of the game was Weber State’s Junior SG Patrick Howe. Patrick was ranked #164 overall in 1956 and will be returning next year. He scored 16. Weber State also had two players score 11 points each. Sacramento State had 4 players score in double figures, led by a double double from Junior PF Ed Buckles, ranked #6 overall and a 5 star recruit in 1956. Buckles will be returning next year. He scored 14 and grabbed 11 boards. Senior SF (playing at Center!) Bret Holland also scored 14 to lead Sacramento State to a 76-68 victory! Game 2 is a rematch of last year’s National Semi-Final, which Duquesne won. This year the tables are turned and Wichita State gets their revenge with a 72-66 victory! Junior PF Joe Pomerleau led Wichita State with a double double, scoring 19 points and pulling in 10 rebounds. Joe has already declared for the draft and is trying to win his second National Title. The finals saw a brilliant defensive performance from Sacramento State. They held Wichita to just 59 points in a 69-59 game. In a game that did not see too much scoring, Sac State’s Senior SG John Nesbitt, a 5 star recruit ranked #7 overall in 1956, led his team with 15 points to give Sacramento State their Second National Title!

Season Awards Code:
Enoch is just a Junior this year and will be returning for his senior season at Duquesne. He was a 5 star recruit and ranked #8 overall in 1956. He already has two national championship rings. This year he averaged over 20 points per game and almost 10 rebounds per game. Whatley took a red shirt last year and this year he averaged 16.5 points and 4 rebounds per game. He was ranked #26 overall in 1958. Main took over the North Texas team this year. North Texas has not been to the NCAA tournament since 1951 and this year he won 24 games and also won a NCAA game as an 8 seed. Recruiting Rankings Code:

They replaced him with last season’s Coach of the Year, John Main from North Texas. John has a 104-53 record as a head coach. Arizona fired Marmel after another disappointing season. They replaced me with an Oakland assistant, Ali Peters. This will be Ali’s first head coaching job. Navy fired their coach, James Coker and replaced him with the Bethune coach, Colin Brown. Bethune hired the Duke head coach, Josh Emerson to replace him. Josh has a 140-115 record as a head coach and an NIT Title with Duke. The biggest news of the off season is the retirement of Chris Martinez from Duquesne. Duquesne replaced him with Clemson coach, Frank Spiller. Frank took Clemson to the Final Four 2 years ago and has a 216-184 record as a head coach. More on Chris Martinez later. Chris Martinez retired as the All-Time Winningest coach in NCAA history, and it is not even close. Chris retired with 822 victories. The next closest on the list has 673. Chris retired 3rd on the Winning Percentage list at 0.756%. He has 5 NCAA Titles. He has 5 other Final Four Appearances. He started his career at Florida International and took them to the NCAA’s all 4 years he was there. He then went to Jacksonville for two years and then moved on to Fordham where he established himself and won his first title. In 1944 he went to Duquesne and the rest is history.

The San Jose State Spartans announce the hiring of former Arizona basketball coach, Marmel. It was quite a surprise to get a job offer from this team. They have a prestige of 40 right now and made the NIT last season. I guess the improvement I showed in my last season at Arizona was what got me the job.
I start off with a clean slate of a coaching staff, so I must hire all three positions. Aaron Lapp, Recruiter. Rated 32 Tony Chong, Scout. Rated 40 Eric Murray, Assistant. Rated 42 on both offense and defense. I got a pretty lousy recruiter, so I doubt he will be around for more than 1 year. The other 2 guys I am very happy with, and can only hope they don’t bolt for better jobs in the near future. Scheduling. I am not really sure what to expect this year, so the basic plan is as follows. I have 5 road and 5 home games to schedule. I schedule some of the weaker teams on the road, and at home I get some decent challenges. I also have a home and home with Arizona starting at my place this year. Code:
Recruiting. This year I will have 4 scholarships to offer. C and SF are probably my main needs, but I will be open to anybody that fits my style. I only signed 1 recruit in the early period, and I am struggling a bit to find players who want to play for me. PF John Kim is from Victorville, CA. He is a 3 star recruit and is ranked as the #48 PF in the country. Code:

San Jose State Roster
Centers 51 Jason Seabrook C Sr 6' 9" 261 Mcarthur, CA Jason has started at Center since he arrived on campus, and I see no reason to make a change now. His strength is getting the rebounds, but he plays decent defense and also has a decent offensive game. 22 Charles Nicks C Sr 6'11" 323 Provo, UT Charles started in his sophomore year and then a few games last year. This year he is my starting PF. He is the best defender on this team, and also a great rebounded. He is not going to provide us with a lot of scoring, but on occasion he will have a nice game. 54 Xander Rose C So 6'10" 242 El Cerrito, CA Rose is at the bottom of the depth chart and will not see any playing time. Power Forwards 32 Alfred Ballard PF Sr 6'10" 259 Riverbank, CA Alfred is at the top among a bunch of pretty under whelming power forwards I have. He will be our top backup at the low post positions this year. 0 Timothy Brown PF So 6' 7" 246 Corvallis, OR Tim really doesn’t add anything that Alfred doesn’t provide. He will be the second backup to the post positions. 20 Lenny Turcotte PF Fr 6'11" 241 Compton, CA Lenny is a unique player. He plays pretty decent perimeter defense, and can score down low pretty well. He also has a marginally jump shot to draw out the defense. His passing skills are very good as well. I think I am going to slot him in as a backup at both SF and PG as an experiment. Small Forwards 5 Gordon Davis SF Jr 6' 7" 232 Vista, CA Gordon Davis is nothing to write home about. He can get down and dirty in the paint and score for us, but other than that, I am not impressed. Still, he is the best we got and will get the start. 45 Douglas Yarborough SF Fr 6' 7" 224 Larkspur, CA Doug gets a red shirt this year. Shotting Guards 33 Edward Coleman SG Fr 6' 4" 207 Cupertino, CA Ed gets a red shirt this year. 31 Cornelius Strom SG Fr 6' 5" 191 North Las Vegas, NV Strom also gets a red shirt this year. Point Guards 3 Joseph Durkin PG Sr 6' 0" 193 Stockton, CA Durkin gets the start at the point this season. He plays excellent defense and is average in other aspects of his game. 1 Brett Stump PG So 6' 2" 192 Merrill, OR Brett gets the start at the SG spot this year. Again, I am not impressed at all with this kid. I don’t think we will get much from him on either side of the court. 10 Burl Peden PG Fr 6' 3" 197 Cloverdale, CA Burl will backup the two guard spots, and if he is not good enough to start over these two schmoes that I am starting….you can guess. We will run a man to man defense this year. Davis is our go to guy on offense. We are going to run a pretty basic attack, nothing fancy this year on either side of the court. The AD expects me to compete for the conference title. I see now way in hell that is going to happen in the next couple of years with these guys and a bunch of incoming freshman. The worst teams I had in Arizona looked better than this squad. Who knows though, maybe this conference is really terrible and I will be better than expected. When I think I have bad teams is usually when I overachieve. Plus we get to play UTEP twice.

Sorry to see Arizona end the way that it did. Still, a nice jump in prestige for you should help with recruiting and maybe allow you to have more consistent results in recruiting the type of players you want for the lockdown defensive system.
It was weird seeing all three of the Big Ten teams with RPIs above 200 last season. Plus seeing Illinois with a Top 100 (OK, it was 98) recruiting class. Could things be looking up? |

November 12, 1961
SJ State (0-0) at Memphis (0-0) Winning my first game of my San Jose career is a good way to start things out. We take this one 85-77. Gordon Davis was the game’s leading scorer with 21 points. PF Nicks added 16 along with 9 rebounds. PG Durkin and C Seabrook both scored in double figures. I didn’t know this team was capable of scoring so many points. Code:
November 16, 1961 SJ State (1-0) at Iowa (0-0) We get put back into our place here as we get hammered on the road, 73-55. I knew this team was not capable of scoring 80 points. SG Stump led us ion scoring with 14 points. PF Nicks added 12 and SF Davis had 11. Code:
November 20, 1961 SJ State (1-1) at Notre Dame (0-1) We bounce back with another amazing performance on the road and take a 82-62 win. I am still not convinced. I think this is going to be a real up and down season, never knowing which team is going to show up. SF Gordon Davis had a career high 30 points to lead the way tonight. PG Turcotte, off the bench chipped in with a dozen, in only 12 minutes of play. Code:
November 26, 1961 SJ State (2-1) at Towson (0-3) We come away with another impressive looking win at 81-63. Davis sets a new career high in scoring just 1 game after getting 30. Today he puts in 35 points. Brown came in off the bench and added 10. He got in because of foul problems today. Code:
November 30, 1961 SJ State (3-1) at William and Mary (1-2) We take another road victory here, and today it was a hard fought, close battle. The final was 63-57 and we wrap up our road OOC schedule at a fine looking 4-1. Davis was our only player in double figures and he had 18. Code:
November Recruiting We pick up a second recruit this month. PF Demarcus Sanchez is from Portland, OR. He is a 3 star recruit and ranked #77 in the West Region. Code:

December 5, 1961
Miami (4-0) at SJ State (4-1) We win our home opener, which is always a good thing. The final was 80-72. Gordon continues to light it up. He scored 26 today. Durkin scored 15 and both Seabrook and Stump chipped in with 13 each. Seabrook also grabbed 12 boards. Code:
December 10, 1961 LaSalle (2-2) at SJ State (5-1) LaSalle is a once proud program in the NCAA, but we reduced them to tears with a 82-54 ass kicking today. Gordon led us with 24 points today. Can you say conference MVP? Seabrook had his second consecutive double double with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Stump and Nicks both scored in double figures as well. Code:
December 15, 1961 Arizona (2-4) at SJ State (6-1) This was not supposed to happen. My former team comes into my house and hands it to us, 69-56. Gordon led us in scoring with 15 points and Nicks added a dozen. For Arizona, Collier and Millsaps both scored 15 to lead them to the win. Code:
December 19, 1961 Wisconsin (2-6) at SJ State (6-2) We drop two in a row at home after being handed a 88-67 beating today against the perennially top team in the Big 10. David still got his 20 points and Seabrook had another double double with 17 points and 10 boards. Code:
December 24, 1961 IPFW (7-7) at SJ State (6-3) We lose a heartbreaker today, 61-60. Losing 3 straight is not a good way to head into the league portion of our schedule. Davis led all scorers with 23 points. Seabrook added 11, but nobody else really helped out all that much. Code:
December 28, 1961 SJ State (6-4) at Nevada (2-7) Our first WAC conference game goes according to plan and we take a road victory, 73-67. Nicks took over the role as leading scorer today with 16 points, but Davis was right behind him with 15. PG Durkin added 13 and Ballard came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds. Code:
December 30, 1961 Hawaii (4-6) at SJ State (7-4) We are really struggling at home this year. After a 73-71loss we are just 2-4 at home, but 5-1 on the road. Davis again led us in scoring with 17 points. Seabrook added 15 and Stump had 13. Code:
December Recruiting. No new recruits this year, but we are focusing one two individuals who we want. Well, maybe not want, but will settle for.

SJ State (7-5) at Rice (4-5) Our road luck was bound to run out and it did today with a 74-68 defeat. Davis had 32 points on the day, but it all went for nothing, as he was unable to get much help from his teammates. Code:
January 4, 1962 Southern Methodist (6-5) at SJ State (7-6) We get back home and pick up a much needed victory today, 78-75. David led the way in the scoring department with 27 points. Seabrook came up huge with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Our other big man, PF Nicks scored 9 points along with 14 rebounds. Code:
January 11, 1962 SJ State (8-6) at Southern Methodist (6-7) We end up splitting the back to back series with SM. They beat us today, 84-73. Davis scored a game high 21 points. Durkin added 15 and Seabrook had 10. Code:
January 20, 1962 SJ State (8-7) at Tulsa (7-10) After over a week off and some harsh practices we return to the court and pick up a 70-50 victory on the road. Davis scored 29 points to lead the way. Seabrook added 8 points to go along with his 15 rebounds. Code:
January 25, 1962 Tulsa (7-11) at SJ State (9-7) After beating up on Tulsa on the road, we come home and drop a real stinker, 59-52. Davis was held to just 16 points and Durkin added 11. Code:
January 27, 1962 SJ State (9-8) at UTEP (5-12) Things are starting to unravel as we lose again, 64-53. Davis was held in check with just 14 points while Nicks scored 13 along with 11 boards. Our other 3 starters combined for a whole 6 points. Code:
January Recruiting. We land our third recruit of the year. SF Raymon Lancaster is from Honolulu, HI. He is just a 1 star recruit but was a State All-American in Hawaii. We are hoping he turns out to be a diamond in the rough. Code:

February 3, 1962
Fresno State (12-6) at SJ State (9-9) We play the top team in the league close all day long, but they just had enough to take a game from us on our own court, 58-56. Davis had 17 points and Seabrook had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Code:
February 8, 1962 Boise State (10-10) at SJ State (9-10) I feel like I am still in Arizona right now. We drop another game, 82-71. Davis finally broke 20 points again, scoring 25 today. Once again he got little to no help from his teammates. Code:
February 10, 1962 SJ State (9-11) at Boise State (11-10) We turn around and beat this team on the road, 75-72, right after they beat us at our place. We are a much better road team for some strange reason. Davis led the way with 22 points today. Seabrook scored 15 along with 9 rebounds. Nicks and Peden each chipped in with a dozen. Code:
February 15, 1962 SJ State (10-11) at Fresno State (15-7) We play Fresno close again, but once again they find a way to beat us, 69-66. Davis had 20 and Seabrook added 10 along with 15 boards. Code:
February 17, 1962 UTEP (8-15) at SJ State (10-12) In a game that might end up determining who finishes last this year, we let UTEP sweep us on the season with a 69-55 loss. Durkin had a dozen to lead the team and Davis was held to just 10. Code:
February 22, 1962 Rice (10-14) at SJ State (10-13) A rare home win today might just move us out of the basement of the WAC. The final here was 82-70. Davis set another career high with 36 points on the day. Nicks scored 10 along with 11 boards while Stump also scored 10. Durkin only scored 4 points but handed out a career high 10 assists. Code:
February 24, 1962 SJ State (11-13) at Hawaii (12-13) We are exhausted after the long plane ride and drop this one 76-67. Davis was held to just 10 points while Seabrook was our leading scorer with 15. Code:
February 27, 1962 SJ State (11-14) at Louisiana Tech (9-16) We somehow find a way to win today, continuing to be road warriors, with a 65-64 final score. Davis carried us on offense with 27 points. Nicks scored 10 along with 13 boards while Durkin added 10 along with 6 assists. Code:

Louisiana Tech (9-17) at SJ State (12-14) It almost seems impossible, but teams that we beat on the road, turn right around and be us at home. I cannot figure it out. We lose here 68-61. Davis scored 19 and Seabrook added 13 along with 9 boards. Code:

WAC Tournament
Code:
The only thing that might save us is our decent road record. None of these tournament games are played at home, plus we get to play UTEP. Although they swept us, we really should beat this team. March 6, 1962 (7) San Jose State (13-15) vs. (10) UTEP (9-19) We pick up a victory today to avoid the three game sweep. The final was 69-64. Hicks led the charge with 15 points and Davis was right behind him with 14. Seabrook scored 9 along with his 10 rebounds. Code:
March 8, 1962 (2) Boise State (15-13) at (7) San Jose State (14-15) We pull off the upset over the 2 seed and advance into the semi finals of the WAC tournament with a 73-66 victory. Davis led the way today with 19 points. Seabrook added 15 along with 13 boards and Durkin had 14. It seems we have made great strides, but we are still 2 games away from winning this thing. Code:
March 9, 1962 (7) San Jose State (15-15) vs. (6) Louisiana Tech (12-17) We might have caught a break considering 4 of the top 5 seeds in the tournament have been knocked out. Our defense puts on a show in the semis and we take a beautiful 66-36 victory to move into the Finals! Davis led the way with 16 points and Stump had 14. Both Durkin and Turcotte also scored in double figures. Code:
March 10, 1962 (9) Nevada (12-19) vs. (7) San Jose State (16-15) So it comes down to 2 underdogs fighting for a chance to save an otherwise disappointing season. An NCAA birth in my first season can change the whole direction of this program….not to put too much pressure on myself. As a side note, we have swept the two games we played against Nevada this year. The game went to overtime and Davis did everything he could possibly do to keep our season alive. He went off for an amazing 42 points. Sadly, it was not enough as Nevada beats us in OT, 97-93. Code:
Nevada is in the NCAA Tournament, while we sit at home and watch both the NCAA’s and the NIT on television.

Final Four
NIT: Central Connecticut beats Coppin State of for the NIT Title. The Match Ups #1 Weber State vs. #2 Wichita State #1 Brown vs. #4 Lafayette In Game 1, the best performance went to Wichita’s Senior Center, Chris Davis. Davis was ranked #41 overall in 1957. In his only year as a starter he scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Wichita State. Weber State also had a 16 point scorer in Senior SG, Pat Howe. The difference in the game was Weber State’s depth. Their multitude of players who were scoring a few points here and there gave them the relatively easy 71-55 victory. In game 2, Brown had Super Soph PG, Floyd Delao. Floyd was ranked #62 overall in 1959. He only started 7 games this year, but tonight he was a star, scoring 25 points, which was a game high. However, Lafayette countered with a threesome of players. Junior SG Loren Ryan scored 19, and Sophomore PG Daniel Gray along with Junior PG Palmer Delancey both scored 18 points to give Lafayette the 77-69 victory. The scary thing is that all three of those guys are coming back next season! In the finals, that threesome for Lafayette combined for 44 points, all scoring in double figures. They also have a sophomore Center named Doug Owens who led the team with 19 points. All 4 of those guys will be back next year. But today, Weber State had 2 massive performances. Sophomore SG, Noble green led all scorers with 27 points. Junior Center, Graham Tasker was right with him, scoring 24 points. Both of those guys will be back to defend their national Title with a 99-79 victory!

Just thought I'd tell everyone what happens next:
San Jose State, 1962-1963. Here is the new message from the AD: Code:
Assistant Coaches. I fired my recruiter and brought in a new guy, slightly better and about 10,000 dollars cheaper: Pat Rimmer, Recruiter. Rated 41. Scheduling. Same approach as last year. We schedule some of the worst teams on the road, and bring in some better teams for our home games. We also have the second half of the 2 game series with Arizona. Code:
Recruiting. We have 2 scholarships to offer up this year. Center is a big need. We did not sign anyone in the early period, but there are two great looking centers we are clearly in the lead on! |

NCAA Pre Season Review
Last year we had a first time champion in Weber State. Both Weber and Lafayette come back with most of their key players returning. You know they would both love a rematch in the finals, but of course, with the tournament, that is a long shot! This year we have ten 5 star recruits and only 1 has declared for the draft. 5 of them have already committed to schools: #2 PF Gabriel Ward, from Clinton, SC: Penn #3 PF Joseph Nino, from Richlands, NC: Army #4 C Jody Burnett, from Daleville, VA: Wichita State #6 PG Eli Stoker, from Dunsmuir, CA: Sacramento State #10 SF Riley Lavender, from Washington, DC: Wyoming And the others: #1 PF Herve Glorieux, from Biarritz, France: Northern Arizona #7 PF Bradley Bodine, from Houston, TX: Brown #8 SF Tim Jones, from Cloncurry, Australia: Wichita State, Weber State #9 PF Clarence Randall, from Lonaconing, MD: Wichita State, Brown Pre Season Polls Code:

San Jose State Roster
Centers 54 Xander Rose C Jr 6'10" 244 El Cerrito, CA Xander will get his first start this year, at Center. He is not very good. His defense and his scoring are below average. He loves to get the offensive boards and putbacks though. He puts little effort on the defensive boards. He is starting because he is all we have. Power Forwards 0 Timothy Brown PF Jr 6' 7" 247 Corvallis, OR Tim is also a first time starter, at PF. He is average on both defense and offense. Like Rose, he love to hit the offensive boards for putbacks. We should get a lot of second chance points this year. He also lacks the desire on the defensive end of rebounding. 20 Lenny Turcotte PF So 6'11" 244 Compton, CA Lenny has a terrible defensive game, but is a pretty good scorer in the post. He will be the #2 backup at all three positions: C, PF and SF. 2 John Kim PF Fr 6' 8" 249 Victorville, CA John gets a red shirt this year. 30 Demarcus Sanchez PF Fr 6'10" 230 Portland, OR Demarcus also gets a red shirt this year. Small Forwards 5 Gordon Davis SF Sr 6' 7" 234 Vista, CA Gordon gets the start at SF this year after averaging over 21 points per game last year. He is out #1 scoring option and we hope he can be the leading scorer in the nation. 45 Douglas Yarborough SF Fr 6' 8" 226 Larkspur, CA Doug is a really great all around player. He is the main backup at C, PF and SF, but will see most of his playing time at C and PF because Davis will not get much rest this year. 42 Raymon Lancaster SF Fr 6' 8" 221 Honolulu, HI Raymon is going to be a good player for us, but he is buried in the depth charts right now. He may even get a red shirt next year, we just didn’t have a third one to give this season. Shooting Guards 33 Edward Coleman SG Fr 6' 4" 210 Cupertino, CA Ed’s defense is just atrocious. That is not going to get him much playing time on my team, except for the fact that he is forced into the backup point guard role. 31 Cornelius Strom SG Fr 6' 5" 193 North Las Vegas, NV Strom is not much better than Coleman, and has no point skills to save him from bench duty. Point Guards 1 Brett Stump PG Jr 6' 2" 194 Merrill, OR Brett gets the start at the point, and he should do a pretty good job for us this year. He was a strictly a role player as a starter last year, but improvements should come with that year under his belt. 10 Burl Peden PG So 6' 3" 197 Cloverdale, CA Burl is not good, but he is our best option out of 3 really lousy players to start at SG. We will try to pick up the pace of the offense a bit this year. Davis is our go to guy, of course. On defense, we are going to have to run a 2-3 defense to make up for the lack of defensive talent on this team. We will need to double team inside quite a bit, but only occasionally on the outside. We won’t be pressing or trapping much at all.

November 18, 1962
SJ State (0-0) at Baylor (0-0) A great offensive performance give us a nice 89-63 opening day victory on the road. Davis starts out the season with a 27 point game. Rose contributed 16 points and Stump added 12. Code:
We enter the polls at #25 after this win. It won’t last a week. November 22, 1962 #25 SJ State (1-0) at Robert Morris (0-1) After going up by double digits, we hold on for a 80-79 victory. Davis led the team in scoring with 18 points. PF Tim Brown had a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Rose scored 15 and Stump added a dozen points along with 8 assists. Code:
November 26, 1962 SJ State (2-0) at Eastern Michigan (1-0) Our offense was not up to the challenge today and we lose the first of the season, 68-64. Davis fouled out with just 8 points. Brown had a dozen and so did Rose, along with 10 boards. We also lost PF Lenny Turcotte for about a month due to injury. Code:
November Recruiting. We got our first recruit, C Jere Scott from Smithfield, UT. He is a 3 star recruit and ranked as the #28 Center in the Nation. Code:

December 1, 1962
SJ State (2-1) at Towson (0-2) We move to 3-1 on the season with a 76-63 victory. A nice recovery after our first loss. Stump led the team with 19 points. Yarborough came off the bench to add 13 and Rose scored 8 along with 10 boards. The bad news was the injuries are starting to pile up and these are much more series injuries. Center Xander Rose is out for 40 days and SG Peden is out for 60 days. Code:
December 5, 1962 Cal Poly (3-0) at SJ State For this game we have Yarborough as the Center and Strom as the new SG. That leaves us with just a SF and SG on the bench to backup all the positions. I think we are in for a rough stretch with a 7 man team. We are able to score a lot today, but the defense was nowhere to be found and we lose in our home opener, 91-83. Davis came up with a 26 point night, and Yarborough had a huge game in his first as a starter. He scored 15 and grabbed 10 boards. Code:
December 10, 1962 Idaho (3-1) at SJ State (3-2) We drop two in a row at home with a 82-72 defeat. Davis led the team with 18 points while Yarborough and Stump each scored in double figures as well. Code:
December 15, 1962 Fordham (2-2) at SJ State (3-3) We finally pick up our first home win of the season thanks to a nice defensive effort. The final here was 62-52. Davis scored a game high 21 points. Brown came up with 12 points and 10 boards while Strom had 12 as our new starter. Code:
December 19, 1962 Temple (1-5) at SJ State (4-3) We put together a little 2 game home winning streak with a 74-63 victory. Daivs had 20 points to led us to the win. Brown was huge on the boards with 18, to go along with his 13 points. Strom and Stump each scored in double figures as well. Code:
December 24, 1962 Denver (4-5) at SJ State (5-3) We are now on a legitimate winning streak as we take this one 74-65. Davis scored 21 and was the game’s high scorer once again. Yarborough had a double double with 11 points and 14 boards. Brown grabbed 15 boards and Stump added 13 points. Code:
December 28, 1962 SJ State (6-3) at Arizona (4-4) This game will wrap up our out of conference schedule, and it was circled on our calendar when the schedules came out. However, our team gets swept in the two year series with my former team. We lose today, 79-68. Strom led the squad with 17 points while Davis was held to 10. Yarborough is playing great as a starter. He had 12 points and 14 boards. Code:
December Recruiting We wrap up the recruiting this year with the signing of Center John Churchwell from Garden Grove, CA. He is a 3 star recruit and is ranked as the #30 Center in the Nation. Code:
And of course, it would not be my team without some bad news. We lose our currently starting PG Stump to academic suspension for the next month. As the league schedule begins, we have a 6 man roster.

January 3, 1963
SJ State (6-4) at Fresno State (3-7) We find out that PF Turcotte can play, although he is not at 100%. He will backup in the post and Coleman will backup the guards. We open up conference play on the road against last year’s first place team and find out we still have a lot of work to do. We get killed, 74-54. Davis scored 19 points to lead us while Brown had 9 points and 14 rebounds. Code:
January 5, 1963 SJ State (6-5) at Hawaii (7-5) We stay on the road and lose by a huge margin at 91-56. Davis scored 22 points to lead all scorers, but it was not nearly enough. Turcotte added 16 points. Code:
January 8, 1963 SJ State (6-6) at Louisiana Tech (4-5) We get Xander Rose back from injury, although he won’t be at 100% quite yet. Our new starting lineup is Rose, Brown, Davis, Yarborough and Coleman. Yarborough played so well in his starting stint that I find a place for him at SG. We play a much closer game this year, but still fall to 0-3 in league play with a 69-66 loss. Davis led the team with 22 points. Yarborough added 16 points and 7 boards while Brown had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Code:
January 10, 1963 Southern Methodist (7-4) at SJ State (6-7) We finally get a home game in conference and still cannot pick up a victory. The final here was 86-80. Davis had 20 points while Turcotte had 16 off the bench. Rose and Yarborough both scored in double figures as well. Code:
January 17, 1963 Rice (1-12) at SJ State (6-8) We juggle the lineup again. Rose at Center, Brown at PF, Davis at SF, Yarborough at SG and Turcotte at PG. All that change leads to a 77-68 win, although we should be able to beat Rice with any lineup. Yarborough led the team with 23 points. This kid is only a freshman and thanks to injuries we discovered him a bit earlier than I would have. Davis added 20 and Turcotte had 16 as the new point guard. Code:
January 19, 1963 SJ State (7-8) at Nevada (8-7) We pick up a much needed road victory in league play with a 70-62 final score. Davis scored a game high 25 points. Turcotte added 15 from the points. Rose and Lancaster each scored in double figures and Brown grabbed 18 boards! Code:
January 24, 1963 Nevada (8-8) at SJ State (8-8) We get back home and Nevada just turns around and beats us on our home court, after we beat them on theirs. The final was 76-71. Yarborough scored 21 to lead the team. Davis was held to just 12 and Turcotte had 14 at the point. Code:
January 26, 1963 SJ State (8-9) at Rice (1-15) We bottom out in this game with a completely embarrassing 72-48 defeat to a 1 win team. Davis had 22 points and everyone else flat out stunk it up. Code:
January 31, 1963 UTEP (4-10) at SJ State (8-10) We pick up a much needed win here with a 75-70 final score. Davis had a season high 32 points tonight. Rose is getting back into shape. He scored 14 and had 12 boards. Code:
