XP Tech question
What processes absolutely needs to stay up in XP? I remember on win98 that you had to have systray and explorer. What about with XP?

Just start killing them until your PC crashes... nothing like process of elimination... or elimination of processes... whatever.

That's one of the beauty parts of XP. NONE of the startup group items are essential. The Windows neccessary files don't show up in the startup list.

you'll have to do a bit of reading, but Blackviper has some good information on this subject.

Well, frfoot4.exe is probably non-essential...

My best guess is that explorer.exe is probably the only critical process...
You also might want to go into your computer manager and have a look at the services that are set to start automatically... some of them can be safely disabled. |

I think you guys may be talking about two different things. As far as I can tell Astralhaze is talking about taking things out of the startup group on your start menu > programs. I think GrantDawg is talking about hitting ctrl-alt-del and shutting down running processes.

Ah, you are correct. With processes, then explorer.exe needs to stay. Nothing else. I feel like a dingleberry now.

Actually, you can kill explorer.exe without hurting anything. The "kernel" will just respawn the proc.

The more important question is what are you trying to fix? Is your computer running slow or low on memory? You might want to go to the start button and click on the run button and then type "msconfig". This will bring up a console that will alow you to kill most non-essential services.
