Coincidently, this is the next book I have on my list to get.
Cobb's Away Down South This is one of the major subject areas I studied in grad school and am still interested in the subject of regional identity and characteristics. Cobb's book is getting great reviews. |

Btw, the main book we studied in grad school on Southern regionalism was Cash's classic, "Mind of the South", written in the 1940s. I'm glad to see that Cobb builds upon what Cash wrote and bring to the modern era.
Now if we can Southerners to learn more about the mind of Westerners, New Englanders and Midwesterners.... |

Very interesting reading & most definitely spot on the subject of my recent ponderings. Thanks very much for pointing me to it.

In which case, I believe you qualify as "more insightful" than the average person. Watching the confusion that ensues when a northeastern liberal (of any color) crosses the path of a black Southern conservative & the topic turns to some social concern can be downright hysterical at times.

Ironically enough, I was watching GameDay on Saturday and they showed a small group of black students wearing Georgia garb and cheering and I actually had some of these thoughts cross my mind, that no matter how badly white Georgia treated they or their ancestors in the past, they still considered themselves Georgia fans and supporters (both the school and the state).
Now that I think on it, I'm reading Turtledove's Days of Infamy alternate history on a Japanese invasion of Hawaii and one of the central conflicts of the book revolves around some young Japanese-Americans in Hawaii who consider themselves Americans even if none of the whites think so and actually hate Japan for invading. It does make sense. If it's your home, it's your home, warts and all. |

I've got to pick up the sequel to this, comes out Tuesday. I'm getting behind on my alt-history reading, I still haven't read Drive To the East yet (2nd installment of the Settling Accounts trilogy) nor have I gotten a chance to grab Never Call Retreat which is the finale to the Gingrich/Fortschen trilogy.

Errumm...last I checked, the Japanese did not invade Hawaii and occcupy Honolulu and force the American defenders into prison camps. They BOMBED Pearl Harbor, but they didn't INVADE Hawaii.

I was focusing on one of the central conflicts. Change invading to attacking and it would be a true story. I forgot what was the name of the unit but it was highly decorated. |

Well, except the charcters in the book aren't soliders, they're civilians & totally non-combatant (at least in the first book, not sure what they'll do in the second installment). They're central figures because a good number of the residents of Japanese descent seem to welcome the invasion force, (i.e. they're collaboraters) including the father of the two kids in question.
That aside ... Quote:
Most likely you're thinking of the 100th Infantry, 442nd Batallion These Japanese American units suffered an unprecedented casualty rate of 314 percent and received over 18,000 individual decorations. Many were awarded after their deaths for bravery and courage in the field of battle. Among the decorations received by the 100th/442nd soldiers were one Medal of Honor, 52 Distinguished Service Crosses, 560 Silver Stars, 28 Oak Leaf Clusters to the Silver Star, 4,000 Bronze Stars and 1,200 Oak Leaf Clusters to the Bronze Star and, perhaps most telling of the sacrifices made by these gallant soldiers, 9,486 Purple Hearts. The 442nd Combat Infantry group emerged as the most decorated combat unit of its size in the history of the United States Army. For its service in eight major campaigns in Italy and France, the 100th Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team earned eight Presidential Unit Citations. http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita.../100-442in.htm
