Well, I dunno about that. I really like his standup from back then. That said, there was a lot of stuff that wouldn't fly on SNL due to language.

On the subject of Bill Murray, he did some stuff with Gilda Radner as the dorky brother and sister. He was also in a couple of Conehead skits, IIRC. I don't remember any iconic characters that he had, but he was a very solid performer on the show.

This has to be my favorite SNL bit, with Murphy playing Clarence, the saxophone-playing 5th Beatle
