"Mediocrity" defined?
Okay, I'm not impartial on the subject at hand, so I'd like some outside input.
The team described below is a high school team, about medium sized for their competition, in a small region (which accounts for the quirks of how many winning/losing teams they play each year) My question is: Is it be fair to describe them as a "posterchild for mediocrity"? 2005 YTD: 6-3 overall teams they've beaten are 19-36 teams they've lost to are 21-6 6-0 vs teams with a losing record, 0-3 vs teams with a winning record 2004 3-8 overall teams they beat were 6-27-1 teams they lost to were 67-31-1 Lost 1st round playoffs 42-13 3-2 vs teams with a losing record, 0-6 vs teams with a winning record 2003 6-5 overall teams they beat were 17-51-1 teams they lost to were 32-26-1 Lost 1st round playoffs 42-16 5-1 vs teams with a losing record, 1-4 vs teams with a winning record 2002 10-3 overall teams they beat were 31-82 teams they lost to were 20-17 10-1 vs teams with a losing record, 0-2 vs teams with a winning record 2-1 in playoffs (won 2x vs sub-500 teams, then lost 56-13) 2001 4-5 overall teams they beat were 8-28 teams they lost to were 28-28 Lost 1st round playoffs 41-6 3-2 vs teams with a losing record, 1-3 vs teams with a winning record 5 years total 29-24 overall 2-18 vs teams with a winning record 27-6 vs teams with a losing record Post-season avg vs team w/winning record is a 45-12 loss You make the call -- "Average"? Or "Mediocre"?

Mediocre...
Record vs winning teams is terrible.. If they were even just 7-13 vs winning teams I'd say average...

Definitely seems like a middle of the road team to me. Obviously isn't the caliber of a powerhouse team, but also obviously better than many of the other schools. Then again, I would have killed for any of those records when I was in HS.

Average. While it's true that one of the main definitions of mediocre is "average", it's got a perjorative connotation that specifies "low-quality" or "inferior". Mediocre is the mid-to-high end of the second quartile. This team is probably at the low end of the third.
