Just saw this on G4. A 250GB 7200rpm drive for $69.99

Also, the special "Office Space DVD Gift Set" looks cool too.

WOW, A 250GB 7200rpm drive for only 69.99....After rebates. What do you think.

Would be a big upgarde from my 50int and 120ext drives. OOPs, MY ext is 120GB Maxtor, not the 40GB which is in my Laptop

Although, I have heard that the Seagate Barracuda runs a little hot. Actually I think they were once refered to as the fryin fish, because they ran so hot you could fry a fish on them. But, this was many years ago.

I got a 200 gb HD for $80 from outpost without any rebates. Generally, a good deal with rebates is anywhere from $.33 or less per gb. Go to fatwallet and look around. Sometimes you can get a $160 gb HD for around $20.

But what speed? 5400rpm?

That is the first thing I thought of when I saw this deal.

Tigerdirect rebates have a terrible reputation over at fatwallet. In general Tigerdirect seems to be considered one of the worst online retailers.

Its actually almost impossible to find a 5400 RPM harddrive in those sizes anymore. I think Maxtor makers a 5400 RPM 160GB harddrive thats actually more expensive than 7200 RPM ones... its mainly for stuff like TiVo where the lower heat of the 5400 RPM is more important than the performance hit.

DOLA, this is pretty much the consensus pick for best 250 GB harddrive. Its less than TD's base price, but no rebate. The one I linked is the SATA version of the one you linked. I have no idea how the PATA version you linked rates.

Of course, I can only speak to my experiences as well as those of my close friends, but I've always found TigerDirect to be outstanding. The one time I had an issue, they corrected it immediately (quickly with no extra expense on my part), and my rebates have always been quick in comparison to other stores. Those I know who have purchased from TD feel similar.

Don't know, though. Maybe I have just been really lucky as I have heard the talk at places like fatwallet as well.
