regarding NFL kicker injury...
Is it just me or is it becoming common for positional players to be kicking lately? I remember the big deal that was made last year about Wes Welker in Miami kicking a PAT and a FG last season. Today though, I saw Mike Simoneau of the Eagles try to kick an extra point and Mike Bartrum kick off.
And didn't some other team have to resort to this earlier this season? |

The Eagles have done it two weeks in a row.

Sometimes the Cowboys have Jose Cortez doing the field goals, extra points, and kickoffs. I'm not sure what position he plays, but I don't think he's normally a kicker....

After the injury problems Akers had last week, I still don't get why the Eagles didn't dress a second kicker.

What really gets me is the fact that Dirk Johnson (the Eagles punter) can't go out there and make an extra point.

Edit--Wait, isn't he the holder? If he's the holder, then you would have to find another holder. *shrug* Last edited by Raiders Army : 09-26-2005 at 05:55 AM. |

PAT's - Simoneau has done OK (haven't seen yesterday's but the one last week was easily good) and to be honest I doubt a punter would be much more accurate. On a PAT leg strength isn't exactly an issue, and I'm sure he's kicked before which is why he's doing it now. Plus like somebody pointed out Johnson is the holder, so I guess they don't want to shuffle the unit around.
Kick offs is bizarre, I cannot believe a position player would have a stronger leg than the punter?? |

Dirk Johnson is not the holder, its Koy Detmer.
And I guess Johnson can only kick the ball when its in the air, not on the ground. |

Can't you free-kick on a kickoff?

I was just thinking that myself. I think the reason punters normally don't do it is because kickers can get the ball 65-70 yards usually on kickoffs, but punters on average will only get it about 55-60 (given punters usually gross 40-45 and that they're standing 10-15 yards behind the line on punts). Another reason is I think a kicker is less likely to shank it than a punter. Of course, why this doesn't hold for free kicks after safetys, I don't know. As I understand it, it's perfectly legal to tee the ball up after a safety. |

I guess it depends on the guy, but the punter actually handles kickoffs on a lot of teams.

Just heard from a buddy at work today that Johnson can't do any kind of placekicking. He was actually a safety in college and converted to punter real late in the game. Sorta like Tom Tupa I guess.

What ever happened to the art of drop-kicking?

It didn't do anybody good once people learned that you could be accurate by a normal kick . Seriously, the guys on the local sports talk were talking about the last time it was made, and tt was in the early 60's. I hope you don't remember that, since your still in college.

Tupa was great. I still remember Parcells putting him in when Testeverde got injured during that game in 99 I believe. |

The sports talk guys gave the impression that it was still legal, just not used at all. I would really like to see someone try.

Maybe some of the guys kicked in Highschool or something, you never can tell. It seems to me that at most smaller schools, the kicker does double duty and kicks all three..

John Deraney handles all the duties at NC State. The concern, however, is that doing all three overworks him to some extent, not to mention the fact that we don't really have viable backups if he goes down right now.
