The owner of the west fargo stangs doesn't want to sign up to this board but he wants to be in the FOFC cup. He is in the FOFC in hattrick. Is this possible?

Whoa- this looks like it's going to be a 64 team tourney like the NCAA or something. Can I rig it like Syracuse and have all (one) of my games within a few miles of Houston?

Let me address a couple of questions:

Quote:
Alf Trickers are in. Are we playing home/away series ?

This has yet to be determined which is why I started the preliminary signup to try and figure out a format with this many teams.

Quote:
a guy i work with doesn't want to sign up for the forum, but he is part of the FOFC fed, he is the West Fargo Stangs. He wants in.

He sure can. But I need to get him on dacman's list if he isnt there already. One of the reasons is because FrogMan uses that list to compile his FOFC rankings which I intend on using for seedings (minus the automatics)

Here are some preliminary ideas:

It looks like the best way to go with this thus far is group play. What this means is you are in a group of 4 or 5 teams and you play the 3 or 4 other teams once

The winner of each group which will be based on a points system which I will figure out will advance to the single elimination style tournament like we have been doing.

Right now if we use 16 groups with 5 teams in each group we can play 80 teams and we are getting close to that number right now. I may have to make 80 teams the cutoff, I dunno. As of this post we have 62 teams (counting ardent below)

Also ardent is having trouble getting to this board and even though I am having a little difficulty emailing him, I am submitting the Raiders for him.

We have some time to sort this all out so there is no need to worry.

I'd recommend a format of 6 teams per group - it takes 5 weeks to schedule a 5-team group or a 6-team group anyway... Since that means there would only be 11 (or so) groups, I'd suggest that the second place teams in each group have a 1-week playoff to see who advances along with the first place teams in the 'Sweet 16'.

That way, those of us who get seeded into a 'group of death' have a glimmer of hope....

Or we could have 16 groups of 4 or 5 teams and qualify 2 teams per group => 32 teams

Ok the total # of teams is 68.

Here are some thoughts:

17 groups @ 4 a group, 17 group winners + 15 2nd place finishers=32 for single elimination.

13 groups @ 5 a group (65 teams), 13 group winners + MoKan, the_herd and ausonny (#1, 2 and 3 seeds)

11 groups @ 6 a group (66 teams), 11 group winners + MoKan & the_herd + best 3 2nd place finishes.

Math whizzes feel free to come up with more.

A number of alternatives that go from 7 to 11 weeks. The first three are the ones HFP put up...

17 groups of 4 teams (3 weeks)
17 first place and 15 second place teams advance to single elimination (5 weeks)
---------------------
Total (8 weeks)

13 groups of 5 teams (5 weeks)
16 teams advance to single elimination (4 weeks)
----------------------
Total (9 weeks)

11 groups of 6 teams (5 weeks)
16 teams advance to single elimination (4 weeks)
-----------------------
Total (9 weeks)

68 team pure single elimination (7 weeks)
-----------------------
Total (7 weeks)

68 team double elimination (8 weeks)
-----------------------
Total (8 weeks)

17 groups of 4 teams (3 weeks)
17 first place and 15 second place teams advance to second round group play - 8 groups of 4 teams (3 weeks)
8 first place teams go to single elimination (3 weeks)
------------------------
Total (9 weeks)

17 groups of 4 teams (3 weeks)
17 first place and 15 second place teams advance to second round group play - 8 groups of 4 teams (3 weeks)
8 first place teams and 8 second place teams go to single elimination (4 weeks)
------------------------
Total (10 weeks) <=== I kind of like this one

8 groups of 6 teams and 4 groups of 5 teams (5 weeks)
12 first place teams, 12 second place teams, 8 third place teams from the 6 team groups go to single elimination (5 weeks)
--------------------------
Total (10 weeks)

8 groups of 6 teams and 4 groups of 5 teams (5 weeks)
12 first place teams, 12 second place teams advance to second round group play of 6 groups of 4 teams (3 weeks)
6 first place teams and 2 second place teams go to single elimination (3 weeks)
--------------------------
Total (11 weeks)

We will all be in the Cup for at least 2 rounds, probably 3... I think the 7 week one (pure single elim) would make the most sense this season.

I like this option as well.

For this to work though, we aren't going to be able to take a break in the Cup.

This is going to largely depend on how long we have to complete the tournament. With the addition of the 6th Division to the U.S.A., the majority of our teams will last an extra two weeks in the U.S.A. Cup.

I cannot speak for other teams, but I do not see myself getting knocked out of the U.S.A. Cup until at least week 6, and I am sure some other teams will do just as well, or better. That means we will probably have a maximum of 10 weeks for the tournament, and possibly less.

68 single elim doesnt work does it?

68/34/17?

This one would work:

17 groups of 4 teams (3 weeks)
17 first place and 15 second place teams advance to single elimination (5 weeks)
---------------------
Total (8 weeks)

These do also:

17 groups of 4 teams (3 weeks)
17 first place and 15 second place teams advance to second round group play - 8 groups of 4 teams (3 weeks)
8 first place teams go to single elimination (3 weeks)
------------------------
Total (9 weeks)

17 groups of 4 teams (3 weeks)
17 first place and 15 second place teams advance to second round group play - 8 groups of 4 teams (3 weeks)
8 first place teams and 8 second place teams go to single elimination (4 weeks)
------------------------
Total (10 weeks)

Anyways, I will put up all available options in the dynasty poll forum so you can vote on them, as soon as we sort them out.

I think, HFP, you need to close off the entries at some point (possible around 72 teams since that's a nice mathematical number) so we can better have a look at how to set the tourney up. I'll try to come up with some ideas in the next day or so, as well.

No matter what amount of teams we have, we would have an odd number eventually. From 66-80 that is.

I think we're ok with a 10-week event. If you survive to week 7 of the Cup, you're one of the top 128 teams in the Cup... the equivalent of a 6th place team in Div III.

Anyone that good shouldn't have a problem taking an auto-loss in his first game of the FOFC cup and still advancing

Alternatively, we could say that anyone still alive in the 7th week of the cup gets an automatic bye to the second round of group play...

While I am here, I will discuss the seeding structure:

These are the first 4 seeds:

1. the_meanstrosity (Cup II winner)
2. the_herd (Cup runnerup)
3. ausonny (Consolation cup winner)
4. Pilotman (Semifinalist lost to the_herd)

*RavenHawk would have been the 4th seed, but he didn't sign up.

The rest of the seeds will be based on your FOFC FrogMan ranking. I think I will make the cutoff for that 2 weeks into the league season, no matter if we have teams still in their countries cup. That way I will have a definite number and can structure the groups accordingly.

So MoKan (the #1 seed) will have the 68th ranked team in his group, the_herd will have the 67th etc to fill up the groups. (assuming we go with the group play idea which is pretty likely)

Also, I will try to put our foreign friends into groups with each other even though it might mess up the seedings just a tad. Why I am doing this is for example, poor 3ric has had to travel extensively at 6k a pop for the last 2 cups. This way it will help alleviate some of the costs to our foreign participants.

Edit: Except I just realized poor 3ric has no one else in Sweden to play hah. Well it was a good thought.

The cutoff for signing up or the cutoff for actually participating? If you mean the cutoff for participating then as long as you mean AFTER the 3rd round of the cup games, because there are still 4096 teams in the USA cup after today, but with only ~2700 human teams in the US, many of us will be playing bots in the 2nd round too and are likely to win.

Hmm...I think maybe 1 foreign team each group, but guareenting that they get 50/50 home/away games might work better. Definately not perfect, though.

I like dacman suggestion of seeding non-US in separate groups and assure them of having 50/50 home/away games. That could save some precious money !

How about add 2 more teams and then:

a)14 groups of 5 (4 weeks), then 14 1st, and 2 best 2nd place teams advance to single elimination (4 weeks) -- 8 weeks total -- or 14 1st, 14 2nd and 4 best 3rd place advance (5 weeks) -- 9 weeks total.

b)10 groups of 7 (6 weeks), then 10 1st, and 6 best 2nd place teams advance (4 weeks) -- 10 weeks total.

The advantage of an odd number of teams in each group is home/away balancing--not so important for lower division teams, but nice for foreign teams and for more income when an upper division team hosts.

No, the cutoff I was referring to is pertaining to seedings using FrogMan's rankings. Your FrogMan ranking after the 2nd or 3rd week of league play will determine your seeding (minus the 4 seeds I mentioned below). The accumulation of data will give a more balanced ranking then what we have currently. In other words, if you are the 70th seed now, you have 3 games to try and get a higher seed.

Ok, 70 teams it is. This is final! Signing up is closed! (mckerney and RonnieDobbs you are both in)

If anyone wants to fire some other ideas for 70 teams, fire away. I will work on this also myself this weekend. I promise there will no more teams.

Edit: this is who I have in the Cup. I just jotted down on notepad. Don't worry if your team name isnt next to your name at this point, its irrelevant.
