Went Missing
Whenever I see this, I cringe. Is this grammatically correct? If not, what is the right way to say someone's location is currently unknown?
Did the news outlets always state it this way and I've only recently noticed?

One reader asked me to scold people who use the phrase "went missing." Sorry. I have to admit that I don't really mind it. It has a folksy feel to it, and it does at least make some sense, unlike the phrase, "turned up missing." How about if we scrap both and all agree to use "done got lost"? Aside from that one columnist, most everything else I find relating to this recent development indicates that it is an adoption of a British colloquialism.

I think it has essentially become an idiom, and therefore immune to traditional grammatical analysis.
