Oh Shi... (Computer problem)

Ok. I have no clue what to do with a computer other that turn it on and play FOF. I am able to do simple things like installing new drives and such, but as far as problem solving I am a moron.

New problem on my computer. Last night a program crashed that I have used over and over (but not in a couple months.) It's a program to balance the volume of wav files. Every time I try to use it now, it operates at such a slow pace that it is unusable. It used to move along fairly quickly. I figure something has to be taking a huge amount of memory up or something. How do I check it out? I have windows XP.

That's the minor problem.

This is the "Oh Shit."

After it crashed on that program, it wants to check my "F" drive every time I start it up. It runs thru the files & folders check fine, but when it goes to check the free space it locks up at 27% every time. It's an 80 gig hard drive that has about 12,000 mp3 song files on it. Most of them are backed up, but I was about to do an updated CD backup of the songs, because there are several that are not backed up (and I stupidly missed which ones when I put them on the drive.)

Do I need to back up the files and format this drive?

If so, is there a simple way to find which files are most recent?

Thanks...

I think it's time to at least delete Girl You Know It's True by Milli Vanilli.

Done. It didn't fix the problem though... Should I just blame it on the rain?

If you do, Rob or Fab, whichever is alive, will hunt you down, and sing it in your ear for eternity. Press delete, I dare you!

This just made me check mine:

13,021 songs over 44.48 Gigs.

Now I wish I could find the time to record my 7" vinyl to PC.

I would try booting into safemode and running chkdsk, then scandisk on the drive. I know that in windows 2k you can skip the chkdsk, try that and see if it will boot.

The drive manufacturer will probably have some sort of utility on their site that checks for serious problems beyond what scandisk and chkdsk do, too.

Thanks! (You too JeffR)

The weird thing is that the apparent disc problem is on a different drive (F) than the drive that was in use when the program crashed (C.)

Also, any ideas how to check what the hell is causing the system to slow down so much?

is it all programs? or just that one program that you are using on your F drive? If there is a problem on your F drive, it could be spilling over and causing your system to slow down. I will assume for a second that the F drive is a seperate physical disk and not just a seperate partition on that disk. If that is the case, you could open your case up and unplug that drive, and see if your system speeds back up. If the F drive is simply a seperate partition, then your best bet is to try running scandisk and seeing if it doesnt help. If the problem shows any sign of getting worse, I would reccomend backing up all the data you can salvage as soon as possible. If your drive is failing it could fail at any time, and its better to err on the safe side.

Thanks Airhog.

F is a separate drive. I don't actually do anything with it other than store mp3 files (and play them from that drive) Any work I do is on the C drive. I'll try unplugging it tonight when I get home from work and seeing if that helps. I already started copying files to the C drive just in case.
