Interesting Japanese Drilling Project

"Japanese scientists are to explore the centre of the Earth. Using a giant drill ship launched next month, the researchers aim to be the first to punch a hole through the rocky crust that covers our planet and to reach the mantle below."

Too bad I read Journey to the Center of the Earth ten years ago and don't remember a word of it, or I could make a really witty remark here.

As long as it doesn't cause some sort of volcanic problem or bring back some organism that is hearty and could wipe us out, I'm all for it.

Previously undiscovered bacteria that can survive the anticipated 100C temperatures of the upper mantle could be useful on the surface. Heatproof enzymes isolated from bugs brought back by earlier Japanese drill missions are now used in washing powders.

Ummm... I'm sure there are easier ways to come up with compounds that can be used in such important tings as WASHING POWDERS!!!

Maybe this time they can find a super bacteria that will finally be able to soften hands while doing dishes...
