Three Italian teams in the Final 8.

As screwed up as Serie A is, they sure can put teams into the late stages of the CL

I'll try to post the rules for the quarterfinals to final after the draw has been taken place on Friday (and providing I can get internet access pretty soon to). I have a feeling it won't be as early as next Wednesday.

Oh, and te updates standings will be up too, of course. But I'm not in a rush, I sucked big time again myself.

Okay, here goes the third round of the competition. Listed below are the eight remaining teams listed as in a knock-out tree (though the tree it self is missing ). The thing to do is name the semi finalists, the finalists and the winner. My own prediction will follow as an example. The points to be scored is 40 when you have all correct. The logic behind it is used before, but not to be posted by me at this moment. Let's show the tree-less knock-out tree:

Milan AC
Internazionale
Olympique Lyon
PSV (Eindhoven)
Chelsea
Bayern (Munchen)
Liverpool
Juventus

Example: MIJB#19's prediction:
SEMI: Milan, PSV, Chelsea, Juventus
FIN: PSV, Juventus
WIN: PSV

ooh- can we lay off on picking the semi and final winners ? I"m not sure about that, and injury etc could happen by that time. I'd be cool with picking the rest now..

Yes, it's the winner of the first two teams MIJB listed against the winner of the 3rd/4th teams listed. Same with the bottom 4 teams listed in order.

Nope, the idea is to pick the winners of the enitre playoff tree. That is, if you want to play along.

For those confused, sorry for that. I listed the eight teams in order as it would be a playoff tree, but I guess it can be confusing without adding the 'tree' itself.

As posted by Cartman, the fixtures are:
Quarterfinals
Milan AC vs. Inter
Olympique Lyon vs. PSV (Eindhoven)
Chelsea vs. Bayern (Munchen)
Liverpool vs. Juventus

Semifinals
Milan AC or Inter _ vs. _ Olympique Lyon or PSV (Eindhoven)
Chelsea or Bayern (Munchen) _ vs. _ Liverpool or Juventus

Final
semi final A winner vs. semi final B winner

As in the previous two editions, it's all one tournament.
* Max 40 points in the group stage
* Max 16 points in the 2nd round
* Max 40 points in the Quarter finals to winner stage

I still haven't had/taken the opportunity to post the new standings and insert the recent predictions, but will do so next Tuesday or Wednesday. In the meanwhile: keep the predictions for the quarterfinals through the final coming!

Crap, that Luis Garcia goal was incredible. Has to be one of the top goals of the year. Liverpool have really put themselves in a good position here, it will be interesting to see how Juventus plays the last hour.

Looks like the gamble on Liverpool is going to pay off for Crapshoot.
And so is my gamble on PSV... If they can beat the team from Milano.

An early spoiler, we've got only two contenders left for the title of best UEFA Champions' League 2004/2005 tipper. The one person is most likely to win it all, unless PSV and Liverpool both reach the final, in which case the second contender wins the overall standings. Additionally, we've got seven contenders left for the 1-2-3 rankings. April 26th and 27th we'll know a bit more about who to expect to see win this thing.

By the way, it's a good season to be a Dutch soccer fan, we're having semi-finalists in both European competitions (PSV in the Champions' League, AZ in the UEFA Cup). England (Liverpool and Chelsea in the Champions' League) and Italy (Milan AC in the Champions' League, Parma in the UEFA Cup) have two each as well, Portugal (Sporting CP) and Russia (CSKA Moskva) are still represented in the UEFA Cup with one team.

Little update on the day before the final, the final will decide who the 2004/2005 predictions champion will be. We still have the same two candidates left for the title, but I won't reveal who they are. Just to avoid giving away the potential heart breaking news in advance, I kee the secrecy and wait with posting the final scores until Thursday morning.

Final Standings For 2004/2005
Okay, it came down to the last penalty kick to decide the champion of this season and I have to say that the eventual runner-up may want to re-think his supportering of Liverpool, since an AC Milan win would have given him the predictions title. Moriarity is the new champion of FOFC in UEFA Champions' League prediction!

Something doesn't look right. If Crapshoot was ahead of me and he picked Liverpool whereas I picked AC Milan ... I would think he would win.

Even if I came in second, I'll happily concede knowing that Liverpool won the CL. In fact I picked against my favorite team every round .... shows what a true fan i am.

I'm kinda curious as well- since we both picked 3 semi-finalists correctly, and I picked the finalists correctly.

Crapshoot picked AC Milan to beat Liverpool in his prediction above.

Maybe it would have been fair to have posted the scoring system again. The big decission maker is being spot on and being close. Let's give the table with Prediction (pr), Actual round (ar), points scored (ps). (01 = winner, 02 = finalist, 03 = in semis, 05 = quarter finalists)

pr ar ps
01 01 13
01 02 06
01 03 02
01 05 00
02 01 06
02 02 11
02 03 02
02 05 00
03 01 02
03 02 03
03 03 07
03 05 00
05 01 00
05 02 00
05 03 00
05 05 03

Points breakdown by team for Moriarity and Crapshoot:
M. C. team
06 06 Milan
00 06 Liverpool
07 00 PSV
03 07 Chelsea
03 03 Inter
03 00 Lyon
03 03 Bayern
00 03 Juventus
25 28 (all)
36 32 (previous rounds)
61 60 (total)

Being completely right gives a huge advantage here, while being semi-right will cost you about half of the points. Had Milan beaten Liverpool, Crapshoot would have gotten 12 points more, Moriarity only 7 more. Bitch about the scoring system, but that's what I've used the previous two seasons as well.

Okay, I stand corrected by myself, te scoring system is the same as last season (2003/2004) as I used the same spreadsheet, however in 2002/2003 there was a different scoring system due to the CL competition format being different as well.
Clearly my statement above that the quarter finals through final stage would give a max of 40 points wis incorrect as well, the perfect score adds up to 50 points.

Didnt mean to bitch dude- sorry for giving that impression. I don't understand the system, that's all. The same result can result in different points for both parties ? No big deal, in any case.

The 'bitch' part wasn't as a serious comment as it may have looked. I realized I forgot to post the scoring system only now and figured it could have been confusing. I hope everything is clear now and you both (Crapshoot, Moriarity) can be happy about the final score of yesterday's game. The rest can still bitch about the scoring system, afterall, they didn't win.

Ahh, I didn't look all the way back (I was going by his comment that he was the only one to pick Liverpool all the way through).

Anyways, I love a good controversy. Plus i like bumping any thread where i actually win something along with my favorite team.
