The Beginning

With years of frustration having fermented deep in his soul, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones finally decided to sell the team. The once proud franchise had toiled in mediocrity for nine years, ever since their last Super Bowl appearance. It was 1995 and Barry Switzer, the former guru of the Oklahoma Sooners, had taken over a team that was built for winning the big game. Almost the exact same team had won Super Bowls XXVII and XXVIII in impressive fashion. The team Switzer inherited would eventually win Super Bowl XXX, beating their AFC rivals the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17. But that win came with a price. Switzer started a long line of sad and pathetic head coaches hired by Jerry Jones. The team went 10-6 in 1996 under Switzer and then fell to 6-10. Switzer was shown the door but the door just kept swinging....Gailey...Campo...Parcells. None of these coaches, including the great Parcells, could break the cycle of losing that had been placed on this team. And the personnel that these coaches were given was even more wretched. So, after years of hearing the cries from the fans that he knew nothing about running a football team (unless you count running them into the ground), a new era is about to begin. This is the story of Justin Shipman, the man that would restore the legacy to a once proud franchise.

2004 Season Preview

For years now, the Dallas Cowboys have suffered losing season after losing season. As the sun was about to set on this once proud franchise, a new owner appeared on the horizon and he brought with him a plan to turn years of mediocrity into something fans could again cheer for. The man that made his millions buying and renovating rundown buildings and then selling them for ungodly amounts of money has no intention of doing that with this team. "I hope to bring a new philosophy to this organization," said new owner/GM Justin Shipman. "They have been run into the ground by an owner that didn't change along with the game. I hope to take my experiences in the real estate business and apply it to the rebuilding of this team." Upon arriving in Dallas earlier this week, Mr. Shipman set down with the coaching staff and evaluated every player on the current roster. The following is a breakdown of the players and a few notes on each position.

The Cowboys added veteran QB Vinny Testaverde in the off-season in hopes to jumpstart a sputtering offense. Testaverde threw for 1385 yards to go along with 7 TDs and just 2 INTs, appearing in seven games as a backup for the New York Jets in 2003. The team also added QB Drew Henson, who gave up baseball to pursue football. Henson and QB Tony Romo look to be very good future backups and should hold down the fort until a franchise QB can be brought in.

RB Eddie George was released by the Tennessee Titans after rushing for 1,031 yards in 2003. The Cowboys quickly jumped on the aging veteran to bring some stability to a backfield that hasn't been productive since RB Emmitt Smith left for the desert in Arizona. They also drafted Notre Dame RB Julius Jones, a move that was questioned when they decided to pass on RB Stephen Jackson. Thus far Jones looks to be a bust. FB Ritchie Anderson was brought in mainly because he is an excellent blocker and is great at catching the ball out of the backfield.

The Cowboys have a couple good WR's in Terry Glenn and Quincy Morgan. Though neither one is great and are probably better backups, they will be expected to do the job of #1 and #2 receivers. WR Keyshawn Johnson is the projected starter at this time but Morgan has a better upside and will probably beat him out in training camp. TE Jason Witten has received only praises from the Front Office and his teammates. Dallas officials believe that he will become the best TE in the league, possibly with one more season under his belt. The kid caught 35 passes for 347 yards in 2003 but only visited the endzone one time. If Dallas can land a QB in the near future, this guy will be the reincarnation of TE Jay Novacek.

A good mix of youth and veteran leadership makes up the offensive line. G Larry Allen is the leader on the line and rightfully so. If the young guys Lehr, Gurode & Rogers can develop quickly, this offensive line will be a solid unit for years to come.

The kicking game is in sad shape. P Mat McBriar won't even make it to training camp before he gets cut. K Billy Cundiff isn't a great kicker but might get by until the 'Boys find a better option. GM/Owner Justin Shipman has made it clear that unlike Jerry Jones who never spent much for kickers and punters, Mr. Shipman believes that the kicking game is the backbone of the team and rest assured that he will find some talent for these positions.

The Cowboys are BIG on the defensive line…..REALLY BIG! They have three dominating linemen which would make a switch to a 3-4 defense seem like the logical choice but don’t have the depth at linebacker to pull it off. DE Marcellus Wiley was signed away from San Diego in the offseason to help bolster a line that already features longtime Cowboy DE Greg Ellis and last years free agent pickup DT La’Roi Glover.

LBs Dat Nguyen and Dexter Coakley are consistent contributors to this defense. Nguyen has surpassed the 100+ tackle mark in two out of his last three seasons. Although Coakley has only had over 100 tackles once during his career, he has been consistently in the 85-95 range. He also has a knack for interception passes, having picked off ten during his career and returned four of those for TDs. After these two, the Cowboys are really lacking any depth. Bradie James looks to become a good backup down the road but will be forced to start this season.

This team has prided itself in the building of its secondary of the last few years. They started off by drafting FS Roy Williams from Oklahoma to play alongside and learn from SS Darren Woodson. Then they managed to land CB Terence Newman from Kansas State. When Newman reaches his potential, they will have a pretty dominating secondary. Woodson is getting older and the possibility of retirement always looms but Woodson has made it clear he wants to play in the big game one last time.

Dallas bombs Vikings 38-24

Minneapolis, MN (AP) -- The Minnesota Vikings played host to the Dallas Cowboys today at the Metrodome in Minneapolis but the outcome was a little different than the Vikings had intended. The Vikings talked smack all week long that the Cowboys 4-0 preseason was just a fluke and that they were a team of destiny. They thought the Cowboys were just a roadbump on their way to the Super Bowl. Dallas showed up ready to play, backed by the play of 40-year old QB Vinny Testaverde (342 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT).

Lead by QB Daunte Culpepper, the Vikings took the opening possession and moved the ball at will on the Cowboys defense. The drive would span 80-yards and would be capped off by a 1-yd TD run from RB Michael Bennett. Dallas' first drive didn't fair too well as the team moved backwards, losing three yards on a three-and-out. After a hold by the Dallas defense, WR Terry Glenn lit a fire under his team. "I ran over to Vinny after our first series and told him that CB Antoine Winfield was giving me a ton of room and that if he threw me the ball I would be open for a TD," said Glenn. Testaverde came out and was on target, unlike on their first possession. On their fifth play, Testaverde spotted Glenn streaking down the leftside of the field with Winfield playing five yards off of him. The result was a 45-yd TD pass to Glenn to knot the game up at 7-7.

After a brief exchange of unpleasantries between WR Randy Moss and Glenn, the Vikings took the field. The Dallas defense apparently fell asleep again because the Vikings marched down the field, continually burning the Cowboys secondary with ten and eleven yard catches. Culpepper would eventually hook up with Moss on a 5-yd TD to put the Vikings back up 14-7. The lead didn't last long, as once again the Dallas offense flexed its muscles and put together a drive that ate up almost six minutes of the 2nd quarter and ended with Testaverde finding Glenn once again, this time for a 30-yd TD. "The game was starting to get the feeling of being a shootout, so I decided to unleash the guns once more," Testaverde commented after the game. The defense once again put the clamps on Minnesota forcing a punt but on the ensuing drive Testaverde would make his only mistake of the game, throwing an interception to CB Ken Irvin. That would lead to a 42-yd FG from the ageless wonder K Morten Andersen. Dallas found them selves down 17-14 at the half.

During halftime, Dallas headcoach Preston Reeves gave his team a long stern talking too. "I basically told the guys that we had them on their heals and that if the defense stepped up, we were going to win this game." The defense responded in a big way, holding Minnesota to three possessions in the 3rd quarter. Two resulted in punts and the other an interception. Testaverde connected with WR Randal Williams with 2:40 left in the 3rd quarter to put the Cowboys back up by a score of 21-17. "At that point we knew that they couldn't continue to hang with us. The defense had just stopped them on three straight possessions and you could tell that they were demoralized," Testaverde commented.

The Cowboys defense only got stronger in the 4th quarter. After a Dallas punt got the quarter started, it took only one play from the Vikings for the Cowboys to start to pull away. Once again Culpepper would be picked off, this time by S Darren Woodson. Woodson would dance and weave his way 32-yds for the TD and a 28-17 lead. The Vikings finally showed life after the interception return, as they drove 45-yds on six plays but as was the case in the second half the 'Boys made a stop when they needed too and Andersen would send a FG wide that would have pulled them to within eight. The Cowboys got a little offense going when the managed to drive just 31-yds and setup newly signed K Barry Rickard for his first ever NFL FG attempt. The kid was true, nailing a 42-yd FG to increase the lead to 31-17. Culpepper would find CB Terence Newman on the second play of their next drive and just as Woodson did in the 3rd quarter, Newman returned it 67-yds for a TD and an insurmountable 38-17 lead. After the Cowboys went into their prevent defense, Culpepper managed to get a late giveme TD when he hit WR Marcus Robinson for an 8-yd score. The win came at a cost for the Cowboys, who lost DE Greg Ellis for the next 9 weeks with a stress fracture in his leg. "Greg is a huge part of our defense. He brings veteran leadership and really helps the young guys. We will do our best to find a replacement until he can return but the loss will surely send a ripple effect through the team," GM Justin Shipman responded after the 38-24 win.

Dallas, TX (AP) -- S Darren Woodson's two interceptions helped setup two scoring drives and rookie K Barry Rickard kicked four FGs, as the Cowboys were able to hold off the Cleveland Browns 33-31 on Sunday. Woodson's two INTs gave him four in just two games. "I was just really able to read Jeff [Garcia] like a book today. It just seemed like everytime he dropped back, I knew who the ball was going to," Woodson said after the win.

Cleveland used a good mixture of running and passing plays to move down the field on their first possession, a drive that started on the CLE09. After a twenty play drive that consumed 9:32 of the 1st quarter, RB William Green would plunge in 3-yds out for a 7-0 lead.

After sputtering for much of the 1st quarter, the Dallas offense finally started putting something together towards the end of the first. RB Rashard Lee gave them great field position after a 29-yd kick return. QB Vinny Testaverde then hit a wide open WR Patrick Crayton for 12-yds. Testaverde would find his favorite target, WR Terry Glenn for a 32-yd TD that tied the game at 7-7 only minutes into the 2nd quarter. The Cowboys defense looked as though they had toughened up a bit after holding Garcia to three straight incomplete passes. But recently signed rookie DT Geoff Fields picked up an unnecessary roughness penalty that kept the Browns drive alive. "Geoff had a double-edged sword sort of a day," GM Justin Shipman commented after the game,"he picked up the penalty that would eventually lead to a FG for Cleveland but ended up recording 1.5 sacks in his first NFL game, so I can't be too disappointed." After K Phil Dawson kicked a 33-yd FG to give the Browns a 10-7 lead, Testaverde came out firing. Dallas' offense was unstoppable for the rest of the 2nd quarter. Testaverde hit three consecutive bombs of 35, 20 and 29 yards, the last one a strike to WR Keyshawn Johnson in the back of the endzone, giving the Cowboys a 14-10 lead. The next two Cleveland drives would end in interceptions by Woodson. After the first interception the Cowboys could managed only a 20-yd FG from Rickard but Testaverde would hit Johnson again after the second as the Cowboys scored 24 points in the quarter to take a 24-10 lead into the locker room.

"It was probably the best quarter of football I've seen played in my 20 years of coaching," head coach Preston Reeves told the team at halftime,"if we keep this up, no one will be able to touch us all season long."

The Cowboys defense wouldn't keep it up though, as the Browns quickly started inching their way back into the game at the start of the 3rd quarter. The Browns quickly went back to what worked on their first drive of the game and used a good mixture of running and passing to throw the Dallas defense out of whack. The drive would be capped off when DE Marcellus Wiley bulldozed Browns T Ryan Tucker. Garcia sensed Wiley, side stepped him and scrambled 3-yds for a TD, pulling his team within seven at 24-17. The Browns defense then forced a three and out on the Cowboys and they were forced to punt for just the second time in the game. Dallas returned the favor on the Browns next drive, thanks to an illegal block on the punt return that put Cleveland deep in their own territory. Testaverde got back on track and eventually the Cowboys settled for a 37-yd FG from Rickard. Garcia got the Browns closer with a 43-yd pass on the first play of their next possession. After Fields sacked Garcia, he found WR Dennis Northcutt for 13-yds as the 3rd quarter came to a close.

Cleveland finished off the drive on the first play of the 4th quarter, when Green again found the endzone to pull the Browns to within three. Again the Cowboys next drive ended with a Rickard 47-yd FG. After a three and out by Cleveland, the Cowboys got the ball back once again. Testaverde converted for a first down on a 3rd&11 with a 14-yd pass to Glenn. But the drive stalled out and rookie P Harvey Fortenberry would pin Cleveland on the CLE02 with a nice coffin corner punt. On the second play, RB Lee Suggs put the ball on the turf, thanks to a jarring hit from S Roy Williams. S Lynn Scott pounced on the ball for the recovery at the CLE08. The Browns defense stepped up big time, somehow keeping the Dallas offense from finding the endzone for the 4th time in the game and instead the Cowboys settled for an 18-yd FG from Rickard, making the score 33-24. Garcia again drove his team down the field and with 1:07 left in the game, found FB Terelle Smith for a 1-yd TD. After recovering the onside kick, the Browns ran out of time and the Cowboys held on for a 33-31 victory.

As the sun was about to set on this once proud franchise, a new owner appeared on the horizon and he brought with him a plan to turn years of mediocrity into something fans could again cheer for. The man that made his millions buying and renovating rundown buildings and then selling them for ungodly amounts of money has no intention of doing that with this team. "I hope to bring a new philosophy to this organization," said new owner/GM Justin Shipman. "They have been run into the ground by an owner that didn't change along with the game. I hope to take my experiences in the real estate business and apply it to the rebuilding of this team." Upon arriving in Dallas earlier this week, Mr. Shipman set down with the coaching staff and evaluated every player on the current roster. The following is a breakdown of the players and a few notes on each position. Testaverde threw for 1385 yards to go along with 7 TDs and just 2 INTs, appearing in seven games as a backup for the New York Jets in 2003. The team also added QB Drew Henson, who gave up baseball to pursue football. Henson and QB Tony Romo look to be very good future backups and should hold down the fort until a franchise QB can be brought in. RB Eddie George was released by the Tennessee Titans after rushing for 1,031 yards in 2003. The Cowboys quickly jumped on the aging veteran to bring some stability to a backfield that hasn't been productive since RB Emmitt Smith left for the desert in Arizona. They also drafted Notre Dame RB Julius Jones, a move that was questioned when they decided to pass on RB Stephen Jackson. Thus far Jones looks to be a bust. FB Ritchie Anderson was brought in mainly because he is an excellent blocker and is great at catching the ball out of the backfield. Though neither one is great and are probably better backups, they will be expected to do the job of #1 and #2 receivers. WR Keyshawn Johnson is the projected starter at this time but Morgan has a better upside and will probably beat him out in training camp. TE Jason Witten has received only praises from the Front Office and his teammates. Dallas officials believe that he will become the best TE in the league, possibly with one more season under his belt. The kid caught 35 passes for 347 yards in 2003 but only visited the endzone one time. If Dallas can land a QB in the near future, this guy will be the reincarnation of TE Jay Novacek. G Larry Allen is the leader on the line and rightfully so. If the young guys Lehr, Gurode & Rogers can develop quickly, this offensive line will be a solid unit for years to come. P Mat McBriar won't even make it to training camp before he gets cut. K Billy Cundiff isn't a great kicker but might get by until the 'Boys find a better option. GM/Owner Justin Shipman has made it clear that unlike Jerry Jones who never spent much for kickers and punters, Mr. Shipman believes that the kicking game is the backbone of the team and rest assured that he will find some talent for these positions. They have three dominating linemen which would make a switch to a 3-4 defense seem like the logical choice but don’t have the depth at linebacker to pull it off. DE Marcellus Wiley was signed away from San Diego in the offseason to help bolster a line that already features longtime Cowboy DE Greg Ellis and last years free agent pickup DT La’Roi Glover. Nguyen has surpassed the 100+ tackle mark in two out of his last three seasons. Although Coakley has only had over 100 tackles once during his career, he has been consistently in the 85-95 range. He also has a knack for interception passes, having picked off ten during his career and returned four of those for TDs. After these two, the Cowboys are really lacking any depth. Bradie James looks to become a good backup down the road but will be forced to start this season. They started off by drafting FS Roy Williams from Oklahoma to play alongside and learn from SS Darren Woodson. Then they managed to land CB Terence Newman from Kansas State. When Newman reaches his potential, they will have a pretty dominating secondary. Woodson is getting older and the possibility of retirement always looms but Woodson has made it clear he wants to play in the big game one last time.
