Stupid people and intelligent people are radicals, the greater masses are conservative. This has been the political landscape across the globe for around 400 years now.

So of course, there is no suprise. Only that you seem to be trying to exert some kind of (unpleasant) reaction from the liberal members of the board.

I don't think you would find many that disagree that the majority of college faculty have political leanings to the left. The more important question is, for the purpose of their jobs, does it matter? Politics is all about influence, if a person is really concerned about influencing the world, academia would hardly be the first destination.

Big shocker! Seriously, what's the point other than to stir up yet another far left vs. extreme right debate?

Nice how you've covered your bases by only posting 1 real sentence though to make sure you don't get blamed for stirring up useless debates.

Umm, Bubba ... this isn't exactly "Man Bites Dog" here. Hell, I'm not even sure it qualifies as "news".

Actually academia is a VERY good place to influence. You don't influence things today, but as the influence you have over those you teach is immense. You can color everything they learn, economics, history, rhetoric, etc.

However, I would argue that only the "intelligent" are the radicals. Radicals come from all walks of life. Its only the "intelligencia" that thinks whatever they come up with should apply to everyone. Unfortunately, these are the people that are typically living in their glass houses and do not take into consideration human nature. A good example of this is the viewpoint of Lenin and Marx.

Let's spin this the other way.

I guess Conservatives don't believe in a needed public service like teaching.

Not that I really believe that, it's just a plausable theory to the article mentioned.

In today's university, it is hard to heavily influence any student individual beliefs, especially politically. Departments are too big, in terms of students and profs, and you just don't spend enough time with the students. My point is, if you are thinking of impacting the world with your own personal political ideals you are not going to think of the University as one of the ideal places.

Corporate executives, by most accounts, lean pretty far right. Are you suggesting, perhaps, that we have a few of these guys trade places for balance?

Or, perhaps, we should consider that there might be a self-selection bias for both types of professions? And that, just maybe, the fact that certain fields are populated by folks of certain political persuasions might be a reflection of ideologically-driven interests rather than some scandalously-engineered, massive institutional effort to suppress folks of the other political persuasion?

Maybe?

That, of course, is what is really going on.
