Shaking things up a bit

Obviously last season was not all we had hoped for. The offense died against real competition, and the defense was mauled all year long. Having the oppurtunity to make staff changes this year, we took a long look at willing candidates and made a bunch of moves:

Our first move came at the top of the chain, as Syndicate Coordinator Roger McDaniel was let go. He was having a very hard time attracting interest in the football program from our alumni, and we knew something had to be done. Taking Roger's position is Herb Mullens.

Code:
Herb Mullens - Syndicate Coordinator Age: 44 Academic Eligibility: Very Good Syndicate Investigation: Fair Solicit Donations: Pretty Good

Herb brings us the youthful enthusiasm we'll need to get the program turned around.

Offensive Coordinator- Dave Hammett

Rufus Roche was let go after last season's dismal performance. Dave has no experience so far, but he's young and up-and-coming. Under him we are installing the single back as our base offense.

Code:
Dave Hammett Age: 26 Play Calling: Pretty Good Injury Avoidance: Pretty Good Rehabilitation: Decent Congeniality: Very Good -----Player Development----- Quarterbacks: Fair Running Backs: decent Recievers: Excellent Offensive Line: Teriffic Kickers: Excellent Current Offense: Single Back Formation (1st year)

We made a somewhat surprising decision to keep defensive coordinator Jerry Fulcher on staff. The defense did get beat up quite badly last year, but we think if we can get some better talent on the field that we will produce better results. The fact that Jerry is only 35 also gives us hope that he will improve over time.

Since we only recruit from New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania we realized we only need to worry about our scouts from the Great Lakes, New England, and Mid-Atlantic region. We brought in three new guys who will work well together to build us a winner:

Code:
Carl Johnson Mid-Atlantic Scout Age: 42 Quarterbacks: Pretty Good Running Backs: Teriffic Recievers: Teriffic Offensive Line: Teriffic Kickers: Poor Defensive Lineman: Fair Linebackers: Decent Secondary: Decent Bart Jacobs New England Scout Age: 50 Quarterbacks: Very Good Running Backs: Excellent Recievers: Decent Offensive Line: Very Good Kickers: Fair Defensive Lineman: Very Good Linebackers: Pretty Good Secondary: Terrible Kim Logan Great Lakes Scout Age: 46 Quarterbacks: Excellent Running Backs: Pretty Good Recievers: Fair Offensive Line: Excellent Kickers: Lousy Defensive Lineman: Pretty Good Linebackers: Pretty Good Secondary: Very Good

This group rounds out our changes to the staff. Overall we now have a much younger group who we hope will be together for a long time. In recruiting, we now hope to build a very strong offense, particularly at Quarterback and Offensive Line, and we think we can put together what should be a very solid run defense in a few seasons.

Off-field Plan of Attack

Ahhhh, the refreshing breeze that is the wind of change. After our 4-8 (1-6 conference) 2002 campaign I relished the opportunity for change. I dismantled the cogs of the rusty old contraption that was or old program to make place for what we hoped were the first few nuts and bolts that would one day hold together a gleaming juggernaut of a college football powerhouse. Even the grandest designs have to start somewhere though. In an attempt to maximize the skills of our new scouts and coaches, I devised a formula to derive the potential we have for success in all on-field areas. This formula was a simple one, merely averaging the respective talents of the scouting and coaching staff to come up with an overall feel for our competence at finding and developing talent in a given area. Here were our findings:
Code:
position strength --------------------------- quarterbacks 7.50 running backs 7.50 recievers 7.00 offensive line 9.00 kickers 5.00 defensive line 6.75 linebackers 6.25 secondary 5.75

We realize we will have to be an offensive squad if we have aspirations of capturing a conference title (or even posting a winning record). Seeing that we have the potential to create a nationally-renowned offensive line, we will absolutely attempt to do so. Hopefully we can put the bricks in place to support a balanced offensive attack. We have decided to go with the single-back formation, with a slight emphasis on passing. Our reasoning is that we will need to be a fairly high-scoring squad in order to topple some of the more successful schools.

With this in mind, we will examine our roster and identify our scouting priorities.

2003 - Scouting Preferences

Again we will only be recruiting from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. We will be allowed to puruse one recruit who is out of our league every two weeks (a 'dream recruit').

Taking a look at the roster and our scouting strengths we will persue:

1.QB - we need help fast
2.T - ditto
3.C - could use at least one up-and-comer
4.DT
5.RB

Obviously anyone else of excellent talent we can snag will also be brought in.

2003 Rutgers Roster - Scout Overview
Code:
Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate Perrin, Daryl 10 QB Sr* 39 73 Rowe, William 4 QB Sr 23 34 Pfaff, Byron 1 QB Fr 7 25

Perrin is obviously the way to go here. Pfaff was an extremely disappointing recruit, and

we now have to hit the QB recruiting, very, very hard.
Code:
Kerr, Hunter 35 RB Sr 45 50 Pierce, Jermaine 31 RB Sr 47 47 Perkins, R.J. 21 RB Fr 28 31 Mendelssohn, Lewis 28 RB So 21 27 Newton, Malcolm 37 RB* Jr 18 41 Jennings, Lance 48 FB Sr 46 56 Bernard, Joe 34 FB So 24 36
Switching to the one back offense will help our depth here quite a bit. Kerr and Pierce

will split carries and Lance Jennings will probably be converted to RB (from FB) in order

to actually get some playing time and provide more depth.
Code:
Lemons, Corwin 45 TE Fr 15 54 Rodriguez, C.J. 49 TE Fr 21 47 Carruth, Jose 80 TE Sr 34 34 Dotson, Melvin 94 TE Sr 18 26 Hawkins, Preston 85 TE* So 14 26 Knight, Bert 99 TE* So 13 25
It's Carruth for now. But we have seen the future, and it is Rodriguez and Lemons.

Schroeder was expected to red-shirt, but will have an immediate impact and learn on the

job. D'Herde, Schroeder, Mathews, and Ishler will all see the ball plenty.
Code:

Young and Old unite here. Arnold Keith and Sherman Blackburn will try to rush the passer

all season long.

I have a feeling the DB's will be getting picked on all year long.

Hoover and Bidwell will be called upon to provide run support in the 46. I figure we might as well try to stop one aspect of the other teams offense.

Running down our schedule, we again start with 3 extremely winnable games. Anything less than a 3-0 start will be a disappointment. We will probably lose almost every conference game, except of course against Princeton, who we have the fortune of having at home again this year. A win over Princeton to retain the old Revolutionary Cannon will put a nice spin on whatever happens this season.

Week 1 Wrap-Up

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (0-0) at Mililani Town [Hawaii] (0-0)

Coaches polls had us ranked at #92, and them at #91
should be a tight one.

Starting out tight, the game would eventually be dominated by our senior quarterback Daryl Perrin. Perrin threw for 2 touchdowns and over 300 yards as our new offense made a beautiful debut. Some solid running helped keep the ball in our hands late in the game, and again we started a season 1-0!

Final Score: Rutgers 31, Mililani Town 17

Player of the week nominees:
QB Daryl Perin was 21 of 26 for 356 yards and 2 TDs (0 ints)
RB Jermaine Pierce had 12 carries for 71 yards and a TD.

Recruiting News

We started off our recruting by going after a few QB's and some other fine Jersey talent. We also went after our first dream recruit of the year (a player with a red or black coding, above our prestige level) and we hope he will eventually join us:

DE Tyrus Hanson
6-2, 249lbs from Pottsville, PA

Tryus is a monster on the field, and would anchor our D-line for 4 years if he chooses to play at Rutgers. Having already heard from Penn State, we are concerned Tyrus will eventually choose a school with a better football reputation.

Week 2 Wrap-Up

Western Michigan Broncos (0-0) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-0)

The Coaches Poll had us flyin' high at #22 and Western Michigan at #111. I think it's too early to trust these though.

This was a tough loss to take. Western Michigan ran over us for 192 yards, and did just enough to beat us. Our run D was surprinsingly bad (even in the '46' defense) and their 5.0 yards per carry made the difference.

Perhaps the bit of an edge Western Michigan needed was provided when starting defensive tackle Bernard Strong's left leg snapped like a twig. His compound fracture means he has played his last game for the Scarlet Knights. Last year's rushing leader Hunter Kerr also suffered a broken clavicle and will not return for at least 6 weeks. All-in-all it was a costly defeat.

Final Score: Western Michigan 27, Rutgers 20

Player of the Week nominees:
QB Daryl Perrin was 22-of-39 for 275 yards with 2 TD's and 2 INT's.
RB Jermaine Pierce tacked on 18 carries for 74 yards.

Recruiting News

We contacted 4 Wr's and 4 safeties this week that seem to have a lot of promise, we hope to look for a star QB to pursue next week.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-1) at Connecticut Huskies (1-0)

The Coaches Poll placed Connecticut at #54 and us at #65. Still I was confident we could win against a lousy team on the road.

QB Daryl Perrin was absolutley outstanding, and our offense put up more than enough points to win the game while our inferior Defense struggled to stop sucha crummy opponent. Still we walked away victorious, helping ease the pain of last weeks' loss at home.

Final Score: Rutgers 41, Connecticut 24

Player of the Week nominees:
Freshman DE Terry Jackson had his coming out party, 8 tackles, 1 assist , and 4 sacks.
QB Daryl Perrin was amazing, 23-for-35, 330 yards and 3 TD's (0 INT)
RB Jermaine pierce had 104 yards on 18 carries.

Recruiting News

Not finding a stud QB to go after as our 'dream recruit' we instead rang DT Marcus Browning.

This 6-3 260 machine, could be a run stuffing and pass rushing force up the middle for us. We're very close to Marcus (12 miles) and his main priority is to stay close to home. Hopefully he'll join us and keep his talent in side the Garden State.

Week 4 & 5 Wrap-up

We had week 4 off, so we spent all our time getting to know our recruits a little better. We're still very wary of next year's QB position, and we reallyhope we get a recruit we want there.

Before our game with Virginia Tech We recieved some bad news. WR Lance Mathews injury from the previous week turned out to be serious - Lance will now miss the rest of his senior year with a broken tibia. While this is a major blow to our recieving corps, it is a small positive in the regard that it provides true freshman Ricardo Schroeder a good oppurunity to contribute to the offense and further develop his skills.

Week 5

#14 Virginia Tech Hokies (1-0) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-1)

We are now ranked #63 in the coaches polls. We were hoping for a big upset at home, but VT was favored by 10.

Predictably, we opened our conference schedule by getting our asses handed to us. We did manage to open with the first score, and even take a 7-3 lead into the second quarter. After our initial luck, everything fell apart. VT ran all over us (this is espcially troubling knowing that we are playing the '46'). We let up 226 yards rushing total, and our offensive output was more than doubled, 505 to 226.

Player of the Week Nominees
Our lone bright spot of the week was our rising star, DE Terry Jackson.
DE Terry Jackson - 11 tackles, 4 assists, 1.5 sacks.

Week 5 Recruiting

visiting:
CB Toby Walsh - Collingswood, NJ
should be a lock to commit to us, but he won't contribute in his first year.

'Dream Recruit'
DE Jamal Ellison - Pittsburgh, PA
6-5 240 pass rusher with 69 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 3 int's in 8 games.

His priorities are academics and distance, which will actually provide us a fair oppurtunity at landing him, group team prayer has now become mandatory in order to facilitate landing our top recruits.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-2) at Brigham Young Cougars (1-2)

BYU was favored at home by 8.
The Coaches Poll had us ranked #71 and BYU at #58

This game was the ultimate embarassment! We kept it close in the first quarter, but then everything went haywire in the second. On 5 straight posessions we turned the ball over inside our own 40. Yes, on five straight posessions, we turned the ball over, and watched BYU waltz right into the endzone. Once they scored 49 points in the second quarter, the game was completely out of hand.

Final Score: B.Y.U. 70, Rutgers 19... pathetic.

Player of the week nominees:
hell no.

no changes this week, we expect a wave of visits next week (hopefully!)

should be a lock to commit to us, but he won't contribute in his first year.

West Virginia Mountaineers (3-1) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-3)

The coaches poll had West Virginia ranked at #43 and us at #82. W.Virginia was favored by 2 on the road.

West Virginia absolutley dominated us. Running for over 300 yards on us, the game was never a serious contest. They went into the half up 20-0, and never looked back.

Final Score: West Virginia 41, Rutgers 20

Player of the Week Nominees
DE Terry Jackson - 8 tackles, 6 assists, 2.5 sacks
WR Neal Gray - 6 catches, 159 yards

Recruiting
Sadly there were no new visitors this week. ugh.

Dream Recruit

RB Stephen Warren - Roselle Park, NJ
Tough-running kid who could see decent playing time if he is to commit. Probably a very unlikely recruit for us to land at this point.

As a fellow alumnus (BA, 1972, MBA 1974) Let me say how happy I am to see this thread. Good luck returning the Scarlet Knights to the Garden State Bowl glory years!

I see you are up to the crucial week 8 in recruiting. A win is close to a must, but as long as you prevent any of those visiting from choosing elsewhere, you will have done well.

BTW, I'm Cranford High class of '68 and my wife is Berkley Heights (Governer Livingston). So I'd be interested in knowing about any recruits from those two HSs, good or bad.

I havent even bothered naming the bowls yet (since im not near making one) but i think im going to bring back the Garden State Bowl rather than a corporate named one.

I attended North Plainfield high, and we played Governor Livingston yearly... we actually played some classic shoot-outs against them, and if i recall correctly they would generally beat us (just barely).

Ill be glad to report on the GL and Cranford recruits. Also, for season 3 im going to be moving to a much more user-friend format. I'll actually try to be a little more detailed, and much more interesting and engaging...as well as developing my individual focus on a few players.

thanks for reading!

Week 8 Review

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-4) at Miami of Florida Hurricanes (3-3)

Coaches ranked Miami at #33 despite their .500 record, while we continue our freefall in the rankings, now #94. Miami is favored by 15 at home.

Webster's dictionary will rewrite the definition of the word 'humiliation' after witnessing this game. We managed just 33 total yards of offense, and our running game was held to -29 yards. I hope none of our potential recruits caught the highlights of this game. It was horrible.

Final Score: Miami 52, Rutgers 0.

Player of the Week nominees:
Please be serious!

Recruiting
As OldGiants pointed out, week 8 is of absolute importance in the recruiting game. Many prospective players are visiting the campus, and getting blown out won't exactly convince them this is where they want to be.

visiting
We have too many visiting players to mention individually, but we can toss out some highlights. 3 of our 'dream recruits' are checking out the campus this week, and 3 quarterbacks as well. QB is a dire position for us to land some talent at this year, as our current crop of signal callers look terrible.

rejections
We knew there would be some bad news, and here it is. We wish these guys the best of luck elsewhere (unless of course, they are in the Big East).

Knight Knews

Jermaine Pierce was caught committing a serious violation of team rules. Though the violation does not warrant Syndicate involvement, Coach Thompson has decided a strict precedent must be set, and Jermaine will be suspended for the remainder of this (his final) season.

Coach Thompson issued this statement:

"Obviously this was a difficult decision to make, telling one of our best players he's done with his college career isn't easy. But I believe in order and committment to both the team and the entire Rutgers community. Jermaine Pierce has let Rutgers University down, and we are forced to move on without him."

Jermaine Pierce is currently the Scarlet Knights leading rusher with 383 yards on 79 attempts. Jermaine opted not to publicly respond to his suspension.

Week 9 Review

With our squad having the week off, our scouts set out to try to salvage what was quickly turning into a potentially poor recruiting class. If we didn't get a significant number of committments this week, we'd probably be looking at a pretty lean number of impact freshman.

#16 Boston College Golden Eagles (5-1) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-5)

The Coaches poll ranked B.C. at #16 and us at #102. B.C. is favored by 15 on the road.

We gave this game our all. Constantly fighting from being down 2 touchdowns, we kept the game pretty close until the very end, when we finally succumbed to the powerful B.C. running game. Our highlights were an amazing 81 yard reverse for a touchdown by Wide Reciever Chris D'Herde, and the solid performance out of senior QB Daryl Perrin.

Final Score: Boston College 41, Rutgers 30

Recruiting
no rejections...thats good news i guess.

Code:
committments! C Donnie Geffen South Shore High School Brooklyn, NY OT Tommie Weaver Brewster High School Brewster, NY S Donovan Barlow Nazareth Area High School Nazareth, PA
this brings our recruiting class to 13 people, we may go non-scholarship for the last 3.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-6) at #12 Syracuse Orangemen (6-1)

The Coaches poll ranked Syracuse at #12 and us at #105. Syracuse is favored big at home, by 27.

Well, our run defense just cannot stop anyone, we were crushed by a bowl-bound powerhouse in their stadium. So much for the happy feeling of at least knowing we were making it competitive.

Final Score: Syracuse 51, Rutgers 14

Player of the Week nominees:
WR Ricardo Schroeder (freshman) 9 catches, 138 yards ,1 TD.

this leaves us with one more spot to fill.

Week 13 Review

Princeton Tigers (0-10) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-8)

We were favored by 13 over Princeton. The Coaches' poll ranked us at #108 and Princeton dead last at #125.

Princeton has yet to win a game since moving to the Big East, and we hope to extend their losing streak to 23. Due to scheduling issues, we are again hosting the game - so at some point in the future we may be traveling down to Princeton in consecutive years.

Our season had been a disappointment so far. Losing every marginal game, we found ourselves still hoping for our first conference win in the last week of our season. We wanted to send out our seniors on a high note, and retain the symbol of our battle with these Ivy League snobs, the Revolutionary Cannon. Having won the rusting piece of history back last year, we were in no mood to give it up.

An excellent kickoff return gave Princeton the ball at our 36 yard line to start the day, and before we could blink we were down 7-0. After I tore into the team for their lack of energy, we whizzed downfield -- 97 yards in 7 plays -- and evened the score at 7-7.

QB Daryl Perrin was uncharacteristically on-target, and we took a 14-7 lead into the half. So far, so good!

In the second half, Princeton's ground game embarressed us, plowing through us for throughout the 3rd quarter, and scoring 10 consecutive points to take a lead heading into the 4th quarter. 17-14 Princeton.

Daryl Perrin found Jose Carruth with 7 minutes remaining to once again put us in the lead 21-17. Our defense again struggled against the run though, and a 51 yard drive put Princeton in command with just 1:01 remaining.

The following drive will surely stay with our graduating class for the rest of their lives.

Out of timeouts and furiously trying to move the ball, Daryl Perrin hit on 3 passes to our recieving corp, and with just 10 seconds remaining our offense scrambled to the line of scrimmage, first and goal at the Princeton 6 yard line. In an amazing display of courage, Daryl Perrin called a run at the line of scrimmage, a draw to converted fullback Lance Jennings: Lance showed he hadn't lost his strength as he bowled over Princeton's middle linebacker Irv Kruse to give us the 28-24 victory!

The cannon remains ours! take that you bookworms!

Final Score: Rutgers 28, Princeton 24

Player of the Week nominees:
QB Daryl Perrin 24 of 33 for 337 yards and 3 touchdowns (1 interception).
Not a bad way to end your college career.

Lance Jennings, converted from fullback to running back earlier in the year, had saved his best performance for last with 18 carries for 107 yards and one huge touchdown to keep the Revolutionary Cannon in our posession.

True Freshman Defensive End Terry Jackson was named national defensive player of the week!

Terry had 11 tackles, 5 assists, and 2 sacks in our game against Princeton. We hope this puts Terry over the top for the all-freshman team.

Season Review

well, it obviously could have been better...but lets take a quick glimpse at it:

QB
Having Daryl Perrin back will be a really big plus. He had a much improved 2nd year as starter, and he'll provide some veteran leadership next season. While his completion percentage could use work (52 percent), he's managed to avoid the INT pretty well over the last two years. We don't see why he cant throw for 3,000 yards and 25+ touchdowns next year.

RB
We lost Jermaine Pierce to suspension, and now we'll lose him and Lance Jennings to graduation. While our running backs didn't do much for us this year, we probably will be lucky to match their totals next year.

WR/TE
we're losing a decent amount of seniors here, but we're also quite young at both positions. Ricardo Schroeder surprised many with his leage-leading yards and catches after he only became starter due to injury. He has a bright future. Our young tight ends will also be better with a year of adjustment behind them.

OL
I suppose we can only get better here...We allowed 50 sacks and only averaged 2.5 yards a carry. Our offensive success begins and ends here, so hopefully some freshman will push the incumbents next year.

DL
I can't say enough about freshman DE Terry Jackson, he was a monster this year, and will sureley be among the best in the natino by his senior year. Aside from him though, we are incredibly vulnerable to the run. Something has to be done.

LB
This is a group that was both old and bad this year. We didn't recruit as well as we would have liked, so we may move some players to LB to help us out next year.

DB's
Statistically speaking we didn't do that bad, but we got run on so much, it's difficult to tell. I think next year we will have enough depth at safety to have them help out at cornerback.

Homer,

Just found this again. Good to see you're still at it. This is an interesting read! I'm on board.

Are you going to post your recruiting results?

I think i'll just list them here, then do an in-depth look at them at the beginning of the 2004 season (which i'll start posting tonight).

I'm trying to find my style with this dynasty, and im also going to finish setting up a web site where people can check out more infor if they'd like.

Additionally, i'm starting a pro dynasty with an expansion team to make use of my draft files.

thanks for reading!

Overall we're quite happy with the recruiting class. Hopefully QB Lewis Meadows can red-shirt and then be ready to start in his second year with us. The wideout recruits mean we should have an excellent crew of WR's in 2 years. The interior line recruits can only make us better. We'll give you a more in-depth look at these guys in the summer of our 2004 season!

The Big Time?

While every player who has ever buckled a chin strap dreams of playing profesionally, few ever get the chance.

Kicker Rico Kafka was invited to the pro football scouting combine and hoped to boot his way into pro ball. A disastorous workout performance coupled with his career 9-for-13 stats made his stock drop like a rock. Why he lost his job as field goal kicker (relegated to only kickoffs) his senior year quickly became evident.

Rated as the 26th best available kicker heading into the draft, Rico knew there was little chance he'd be selected. He wasn't shocked when the phone didn't ring, nor when his agent wouldn't return his calls. But Rico is no quitter. He worked out all season long (while also entering the Geography career he so passionately pursued at Rutgers) in hopes he would latch on with a pro squad. When the opportunity never materialized and the season was over, Rico offically hung up the cleats (including the special cleat for kicking in the snow) and got on with the rest of his life.

Rutgers will produce some pro players yet. I vow this.
