Schlepping Through the Hinterland - A FOF Dynasty

This dynasty will chronicle the life and times of a GM in the Great American Football League, a fledging professional football league that plays in some of the most remote outposts in the country - as well as in smaller cities.

The GAFL slogan is "Football for Everyone," and the league's goal according to their web site is to "provide a fan-friendly atmosphere of hard-hitting, rock 'em, sock 'em, throwback football.

So, we'll see where this one goes.

This dynasty will begin - well, once we get to the same year as it - to take players from high school from my New Jersey HS Dynasty, who will be imported into this GAFL dynasty.

I'm going to take over a team after a few seasons, but for the first few years I'm going to simulate out to get some idea of what the league is. We're using fake players, of course.

Welcome to the 2013 season of the Great American Football League (GAFL). I'm not sure what team I'll take over, but I'll figure it out.

We're going to import the 2012 draft class from the NJSIAA.

Pirates Web Site

The Gulf Coast Pirates are coming off an 8-8 season, but have a ton of space under the cap. The team, which last made it to the Great American Bowl in 2006, is looking to reclaim the glory of the past.

The Pirates have $72 million of cap space, but need to sign virtually an entire team with that money.

D.T. Hughes, the team's GM, is poised to put together an excellent club for fans in 2013.

To get things jump started, we hired Jeremy Sutter as our defensive coordinator. In 9 years as the DC in Rio Grande, he helped lead the team to two playoff appearances.

He rated a 9 on the Dark Cloud scale, a measure of strength of coordinators and coaches. (3 for Excellent, 2 for Very Good, 1 for Good, 0 for Average and -1 for Terrible).

We were really interested in signing the best players available. After a 3-year playoff drought, we're looking to get the club back into the playoffs.

Here are some of the players we signed as unrestricted free agents:

CB Bennie Henson - 4 yrs/$26.64 million.
Henson spent the past five years in Wyoming. He was the 2006 All-Pro at cornerback. Over the past five years, he had at least 4 interceptions. He's never missed a start in his 9 year career.

MLB Kevin Mortensen - 4 yrs/$32.33 million.
Kevin returns to Gulf Coast after he spent the last two years in D.C. Last season, he was the All-Pro at Inside Linebacker and was a 2nd Team selection in 2010, with Gulf Coast. He had 142 tackles last season and 2.5 sacks.

WR Ricky Dean - 3 yrs/$13.58 million.
Ricky is a 9-year veteran who spent his entire career with Fort Collins. He was a 2nd-team all pro in 2011, and caught 6 TD passes last year. He had 1186 yards receiving, his 7th straight 1,000 yard receiving season.

CB Keith Reid - 5 yrs/$54.08 million.
Last year's All-Pro 2nd Team Cornerback, Reid is a six year veteran who had 7 INTs last year. He has never had fewer than 5 INTs in a season.
