Biggest Busts in a Draft

After running our draft, a GM had a top 10 overall pick drop dramatically in ratings, along the lines of -17 current ratings and -54 in Future potential. Has anyone else encountered such a swing in a players ratings right after the draft? I have heard of busts, but good lord, did he lose a leg in right after the draft or something? There is a discussion on the NAFL Board about this one pick.

I can't remember the exact numbers, but I had a 1st-round OT (picked around No. 10-12) go from a low 70s potential before the draft to something like 18 potential after I picked him. His bars were literally barely visible. He still asked for a huge contract, but I just cut him.

I had a SP guy go from 45/59 to 9/19 after a holdout! I traded him for a punter out of spite.

A first rounder in the CFL was something like 2/3 immediately after the draft a couple seasons ago.

In my single player league, the Raiders took QB Winfred Phelan with the #1 pick in the 2003 draft. As I recall he was underdeveloped, but had 85+ potential. They were unable to get a contract signed, and Phelan re-entered the draft in 2004. This time the 49ers took him #1 overall. His bars were 12/84 and he was rated #1 on the green page. San Francisco ended up starting a mediocre 10 year vet in a 3-13 effort that year. Would have been best to play him...

Phelan must have spent the 2005 offseason on the Ricky Williams training regimen because he was down to 12/64 and zeroed out in several categories after reporting to camp. But with no better option, the 49ers started him for all 16 games. Phelan went 6-10 with 14TD's and 23INT. He started in 2006 and 2007, after which he is rated 50/62 and has a career TD to INT ratio of 50 - 76. They extended his contract and the fans love him, so it looks like he'll be in San Francisco for a while longer.

He’s not a complete bust, for after being chosen #1 overall twice, he’s been a huge disappointment. I’m going to keep following this guys career, been interesting thus far.

Update: Phelan, who has an 84 volatility rating, had a ratings crash going into his 6th season. He is now rated 33/35 and his time in SF appears numbered as they brought in one of the leagues best QB's on a 2 year contract. Phelan is currently unplayable with his current ratings distribution. He'll probably hang it after after this season or next. Now he truly ranks as a great bust.
