I saw a commercial for Wellbutrin XL today with NASCAR driver Bobby Labonte. It was an unexceptional non-specific commercial (they didn't say what the product did, and they didn't list the side effects), except for one thing.

At one point, in fairly large letters under Bobby, was the statement, "Bobby Labonte does not use Wellbutrin XL". I can't remember a time when I was told within the commercial that someone who was advertising a product did NOT use it.

BTW, if you care, Wellbutrin XL is an anti-depressant.

After a couple of months off, Levitra is back, and they're changing tactics. There's a woman bragging about how her man takes Levitra and how it makes him so happy and how it works really well. The guy, interestingly enough, is seen but not heard. The commercial hints at what the drug actually does (if we didn't know already), along with the side effects.

Instead of tire throwing contests and Mike Ditka appealing to guys directly, the Levitra folks are trying to pull the men in through the women who love them but are frustrated by what isn't happening behind closed doors. We'll probably see this commercial a zillion times if it's at all successful, and so I may have some more comments later.

They should maybe use that guy from Dell's old commericals, playing as a doctor and giving some guy a drug, and have him saying now "Dude, your getting an errection."

you'd think they'd be able to solve that somehow.

The reality -- the bedroom light flips back on two seconds after it goes out and we hear the pitter-patter of feet as our football-through-the-tire guy runs to the bathroom.

Talking

Another look at the wacky world of prescription drug commercials:

* Viagra has a new commercial - it's black and white, and a woman and a man are going shopping while the voiceover says something like, "Remember when you used to be called 'Wild Thing'?... remember when you wanted to stay indoors for your honeymoon?... he's back". This one isn't as much fun as the "We Are The Champions" ads from a few months back, so I won't say anymore about it.

* I haven't seen many Cialis ads lately (at least on the shows and networks I prefer to watch), but the ones I've seen have been variations of the ones they had been running. They have a new tagline now - "you can be ready" replaces "will you be ready?".

* There were lots and lots of Levitra ads during ESPN's coverage of the World Series of Poker - at least one per hour - in addition to having their logo on the featured table (not at the Tournament of Champions, thankfully). There are three variations of this ad - one where the guy does all the talking, and two where the woman does all the talking. I see the latter two much more often these days. Two comments:

(1) If you're looking for one of the types of women that I think is "hot", this woman is it. She clearly has some miles on the odometer, but so do I, so that's no problem. She has an unusual voice, which is another turn-on. And if you notice carefully, you see that she never, ever looks straight at the camera. Normally this freaks me out, but it works for her. If she came to my door asking me to ask my doctor about Levitra, I would. Yes I'm weak. Then again, I'm about 99.8% sure if she showed up, my "quality of response" would show that querying my doctor about this particular problem would be a waste of time.

(2) I think the guy looks like a cross between Chuck Woolery and Pat Sajak, unusual as that sounds.

* Crestor continues their bad Dr. Seuss imitation with their ads - the older one has a man, the newer one has a woman.

* I always confuse the Flonase flim noir-ish ad with the AFLAC film noir-ish ad, until the duck appears (or doesn't). I like the AFLAC ad better - though I think the one with the synchronized swimmers is the best.

* Back on topic, remember those Vioxx ads? The one with "It's a Beautiful Morning"? Well, we won't be seeing those anymore, now that Merck has pulled it off the market. Doggone it, we can't tell you about ALL the possible side effects in 30 seconds!

Time for another look at the wacky world of drug commercials:

* The Levitra Babe continues to torture me occasionally. It's great that she's so happy, but you'd think she'd brag about something else after awhile. I haven't seen the commercial where the guy speaks in a long time.

* Speaking of long time, I haven't seen any Viagra commericals in months. It could be just the networks I choose to watch & when, or maybe they're relying on Mark Martin to do all their advertising for them.

* As I'm sure most of you are aware, Cialis had a commercial during the Super Bowl. It's most of the same frisky couples (and some new ones), mostly the same voiceover (including side effects), but new background music - "Be My Baby".

* Speaking of Cialis, Medical Hair Restoration has a parody of the older Cialis commercials, complete with the music. I think it's quite funny, but I've always been a sucker for parodies.

* Three new commercials from Bob & the Enzyte clan. The first one has the ever smiling one doing a series of increasingly unlikely acts after taking Enzyte - including rescuing a cat from a tree (I'm sure they meant getting some... well, you know, but they wanted a little subtlety).

The second one is set at a football tailgate. Bob is surrounded by comely young cheerleaders (I think his wife is in the background). We see guys from the opposing team, called the Imps. They have I-M-P-S painted on their respective stomachs. One of the guys has one of his imp horns pointing downward - we know that that's supposed to imply, don't we? In the end, one of the Imps' footballs strays over to Bob, he throws it back to them, and he bops the Imp mascot on the head.

The third one is also set at a tailgate similar to the second. This time, one of the Imps' fans in the background turns around and joins his buddies. He has an "L" painted on his stomach. You can guess the rest.

What can I say? They're still weird.

I belive a stipulation for the hard liquor companies advertising is they have to spend a certain percentage of their budget on public service commercials about the dangers of underage drinking, dwi, etc...

I haven't seen the Imps Enzyte commercial, but I laughed out loud when you described the "L"Imps commercial.
