Fox Sports World changes to Fox Soccer Channel
Bah. Bah I say.
I liked the stuff they mention here. Soccer in America received a major infusion of accessibility this week when Fox Sports World announced it would morph into the Fox Soccer Channel come February. (The formal ceremony will come during a 30-second spot on Fox's Super Bowl pregame show on Feb. 6; the revamped network begins broadcasting at 12:01 a.m. Feb. 7.) With 85 percent of Fox Sports World's programming already soccer-based, the network decided to ditch Aussie Rules Football, darts, rugby and concentrate on the world's most popular sport.

I'm all for it.
Over at BS there was talk that there might be some new highlite shows, which would be great, since MLS Wrap is shite (except for Harkes who is excellent) and FSW Report is kind of.. ugh.

I love rugby and aussie football, so this is very much a bummer.

I'm thinking about getting the Aussie Rules net pack, record the games (with Windows Media Recorder, not GREAT quality), and offering it via BitTorrent or something similar.. if I can record it

Darts was the first thing I ever watched on that network, and the commentators cracked me up. I'll miss darts. Aussie Rules Football was the first sport I ever watched regularly, back when I was only about 6 years old. I'll miss Aussie Rules Football. Rugby is the first sport I ever got my wife to watch with me on that network. I'll miss rugby.
I have nothing against soccer, and I watch it on that network from time to time, but I don't really like that they're ditching other stuff that people might like to watch. Well, I can't exactly justify the retention of darts, but the other stuff was really good.

I'm also disappointed about this announcement. If I have to lose rugby (which I just started getting interested in last spring) and Aussie rules, they better be trading those two for La Liga and Serie A as unlikely as that might be.

They are looking into getting La Liga and Serie A from GolTV (the story said GoldTV).. but seriously, seeing the people in here go on about it, would people want to kick together a fund to get the games via the afl.com website? I'd record them (using a streaming video recorder), and put em up on a ftp or something for folks to download.

I'm happy and dissapointed. I LOVE more soccer. I'm loving having Gol TV and I love watching English Premier League on FSW. But I also like watching Rugby and Aussie Rules every once in a while while flipping.

I would cheer with great joy, but I don't have cable or a satellite.

Im actually unhappy about the lack of cricket but yeah, I'd like more Serie A and especially La Liga. If they can get that- I for one would be thrilled.

I, too, will miss rugby.
Though I haven't seen any of it since I got the channel 2 months ago, so I guess I wouldn't really be missing much. But I used to watch it quite a bit when I had the channel a couple years ago.

Well, Rugby is one of my Season Passes on TiVO, this slightly pisses me off.

re: darts
I love it when they show professional darts on tv... its always in a pub and the 'athletes' always swig from pints between shots. |

FSW actually did have La Liga two years ago - problem was, they couldn't ever show Real and hardly ever Barca games because of the contract. I don't know if that's how it is on GolTV, but it seems to me like even if FSW gets La Liga back (and Serie A for that matter) it might be kind of disappointing.

Another move I don't like from Rupert & Co. The switch to college sports last fall meant that I would no longer get 2 hours of the TVG Network, or the half hour race day summaries from Los Alamitos - both of which I considered more valuable than the opporutnity to watch the Washington-Stanford (fill in sport) yet again.
And count me as one that enjoyed the darts coverage on Fox Sports World, so I'll miss that when it goes away. |

On Sunday, I saw a Real Madrid game on Gol TV (against Real Zaragosa) and I believe they show Barca games as well. So no impediments there.

I'm thankful I get to see the EPL, but I can't wait until they (hopefully) expand Gol TV to more regions. I've never seen another top league in action except in Euro competitions.

Isn't Gol TV in Spanish? I don't have it, but I do have FSW. I love it, more soccer the better. Hopefully they can get Serie A and La Liga, that would be pretty cool. I wish somehow they could get more Champions League games on their though. Thats the best soccer there is.
