I'd like to see a John Wooden tree

and they put john pelphrey on it even though he only was a assistant under keady for one year? what is this the kevin bacon connection game?

and hell sean sutton isn't even a head coach yet.. wth

Strange responses so far from Franklin and Ragone, at least strange to me.

I think it's an interesting graphic that puts some detail to something that's been known for quite some time. Henry Iba was truly a pioneer in college basketball and was probably one of the most influential in the sport's history. In fact, I would say that this graphic doesn't even do justice to his impact as several coaches who aren't on it would trace their philosophies to those of Iba.

Well, the graphic says that it's tracing "his style and philosophies," not necessarily direct connections to him as an individual. My point was that there are guys like Bob Knight or Coach K who aren't tied directly but have still said many times that Iba's influence on them as coaches was incredible and significant.

What's stupid about these diagrams is that sports is pretty much a small world. You can find anyone who's ever coached a Super Bowl team and connect him to any other successful coach in the league. It drives me nuts when they do that with Bill Walsh - like he's the father of modern football or something.

The fact is, if you have success, your assistants get hired. They probably have success. Their assistants get hired. Sooner or later, they bounce around the league, and have worked with damn near everyone there is to work with. Especially nowadays, with NFL coaches changing so often. And basketball coaches change even more frequently.

I'm going to make a Sam Wyche coaching tree or something, just to prove my point.

This is not intended at all to be rude, but I don't think you guys understand what I'm saying or the point of the graphic. It's not simply meant to trace the connection of Henry Iba to currently active coaches, although it certainly does do that. The tag line of the article seems to be an eye catcher more than anything else.

The point of the graphic, as I understand it, is to trace the influence of Henry Iba's teachings on modern day college basketball. The easiest way to do that, and obviously the choice of the graphic-maker, is to create a tree of all the people who are in some way connected to Iba. Although it makes for an interesting looking picture, I don't think it's really the point of the examination. The point seems to be in that opening paragraph:

"Few coaches are as identified with their team's style of play as the late Henry P. Iba. [...] his style and philosophies are alive and well across college basketball."

I think that about sums it up.

I should add I'm a fan of the Henry Iba school of thought, I just think the chart goes a bit far.

Always been a fan of Wyche myself. Although he did once call the stupidest run out the clock at the end of the game fiasco of a play I have ever seen.

I always felt that the Organization just wasn't interested in winning moreso than Wyche wasn't capable.
