Mistakes On My College Transcript
Today, I received my semester grade sheet from college. As much as I would like to have an 'A' in Intro to Psychology, I'm very certain that I only had a 'C'. At least I'm certain because I figured my grade by the syllabus. I've sent an e-mail to my professor, but I doubt she will be answering very soon because of the holidays. This is very perplexing to me because I was very average in my test scores. Maybe I wasn't putting enough weight in the other areas. Could this be an error on my part or is this a college administrative mistake?

I think your only error was actually e-mailing your professor about it.

Ah, but you see. It's a psych class. The syllabus was intentionally misleading, and the professor gave different grades, just to observe the various responses of students.

Wow, I thought that your strange sexual techniques would have brought you down to a D, not raised you to an A...

On another note, does anyone remember the Full House episode where Kimmy convinces D.J. to change the grade on a test of hers from an 'F' to an 'A'? Boy, Danny was upset with his teenage daughter. I can hear the assuring "everything is going to be all right as long as we've learned something" music in my head right now. You know, the music that cues at about 26 minutes into the show.

I had that happen to me too. I took two classes at a junior college, when they transferred over they were both A's instead of the B's I coasted through.

I've had classes that I thought I'd get a C or B in and gotten As. I'm just stunned you actually e-mailed the professor about this. Someone needs to kick your ass.

Yup, I thought it was so clever at the time. I never really looked at an F and seeing a way to turning it into an A... but sure as hell, there it was. |

Wow..this has to go down as one of those classic posts.
Here's yer sign. Just kidding...1)There was probably a curve. 2)Even if there wasn't, the grade most likely won't get changed. So, I'm sorry. You're most likely stuck with an A.

Maybe the Professor grades on a different scale. instead, he gives you the first letter, and makes you figure out what he meant. (hey, life skills) So, a C could stand for Cool or Competent, but also could be Crazy.
A might mean Arrogant or assho..er.. yeah.. I'm trying to think of a good comment beginning with A, but er.. I'm having trouble.. hey look, a monkey! (runs the other way)

During my first year of teaching, I had a student transfer out of my school. It was goodbye, good riddance, and please never darken my classroom door again. Anyway, I had written an "F" on Athena's withdrawl form. I received a phone call a few days later asking me to go down to registration. I'm worried about what I may have done wrong. I was asked if Athena had actually received an "A" in my class. She had gone through and turned her straight "Fs" into a 4.0 GPA.

If I hadn't e-mailed her, I would have felt guilt like you wouldn't believe. I like to believe that I am a honest person and that type of guilt would be very hard on me. Worst case scenario is I will get a 'C'. Not a big deal to me and I would feel better about making it known that there was a mistake. Besides, I will probably be told that the class was curved and I will happily take my 'A'. I won't mind the jump on my GPA either.

I had to e-mail a Prof once because the bitch gave me a B instead of the A that I deserved. Turns out she hadn't entered in a grade for a paper that I had written, so I had to dig that bastard out and go show it to her to prove that I had an A.
Never had anyone give me too high of a grade, though...

I had a similiar situation once...I had to write a two to three page paper on something...I have no clue what about...anyhow, I hand it in (thinking it to be the worst piece of crap ever)...I get it back...A.
I begin to look at it, half a page or two is completely missing...just gone...printer must've eaten it. So being a stupid freshman that I was...I go and talk to him (not pointing anything out about the paper, just stating that I didn't think I made a proper effort)...and my prof says... "well I was only looking for punctuation in this one..." End of a discussion... That is why I think English profs (for the most part) have it easy, they either like your work and can justify good grade for it, or they hate your work (no matter how good) and pan it. |

I've probably had my overall GPA boosted nearly a quarter of a point from getting grades higher then I should. I'm a kissass at school and I'll be glad to subject myself to it for better grades

Okay, I received an e-mail from my professor. She told me that she gave me an 'A' on for the semester because of my volunteer project and an 'A' on the final exam. Still doesn't make any sense to me, but I'm not going to argue myself out of better grade than I anticipated.

Congratulations on your A. I think you did the right thing by contacting the professor--as the years pass, all these grades won't matter, but you'll probably wonder whether that one grade was legit or not if you hadn't asked. Anyway, that's not unusual to get a grade higher than a straight calculation of your mid-terms, final, etc. would warrant. A lot of professors take improvement into account--if you do crappy in the beginning of the course but get it together and do well at the end, a lot of professors will give you the benefit and will emphasize the latter half of your body of work. That might be what's going on here... |

I was struggling in the early goings. She never discussed the material in class; instead read articles from the internet. When it came to test time, I was totally lost in what she wanted us to get from the chapters. I eventually started studying every little thing in the chapters, and my grades improved dramatically.

i fucking hated my sophmore year English teacher. mind you - you're supposed to be grading on grammar and punctuation - no matter what the topic. he asked us to write a 2 page paper on one problem in society and a solution for that problem. i think i used my "take all the homeless people and put them in the army so they can contribute to society instead of being leeches" idea. whatever, might be radical, might be the best idea since the remote control. he gave me a C on it because the idea wasn't very likely to happen. as like any solution to the world's problem are going to be found in a sophmore level English class??? i can just picture the headlines "World Hunger solved by students in a sophmore level English class! More on Page 2". in any event as long as i *wrote* it well what the fuck then? if i were to see him on the street i promise i'd run him over. i'd roll down the window and shout "is that too radical an idea for ya, Hand?!" (his name was Professor Hand). |

Just bee happy with it. Most humanities (Social Science : Psych, Sociology, anth. ) proffesors are real liberals in factoring your grades. I think their theory is that as long as you are in class then you get an A. Oh, What was the teacher's way of teaching? Socratic or something else?

Back when I was a teaching assistant, I knew several professors who factored improvement into the equation but didn't want to tell the students ahead of time so that this didn't become an excuse to perform badly early. Congrats on your A.

That's exactly what I do with my students. And Chemical Soldier - I'm not sure what experiences with higher education you had to lead you to that conclusion (which I understand you're exaggerating for comedic effect), but I can tell you they're very different from my experiences. I'm a psychology professor, and my students have to show up and work their tails off if they're to earn an A. From what I've seen, the same can be said for all of my colleagues at my current institution and at the institution I attended for graduate school. I can't speak for the humanities, but at least for this social science (psychology) I have yet to see anybody arbitrarily hand out A's for just showing up. I'm sure there're some of those folks out there, but my suspicion is that they are a tiny minority of the faculty. [/end boring, irrelevant academic blubbering] |

This sort of reminds me of something a friend did. Now, this friend is a racist. I am not. I guess you could say, " Your a friend with a racist? You need to pick better people to hang around with. " Whatever. He is really good to his friends, and has never done anything to annoy me, other then his occasional racist rant. As a joke, in his sophomore english class we had to write a persuassive essay. His was slavery, not against, for. The writing was probably A-, maybe B+ material. He got a D- and a page and a half lecture written to him. I still remember wanting to bust up laughing when that teacher asked my class, " Is anybody here friends with **** ******? " To which, my other friend who was in my class goes, " No, but I hear he is a racist. " Good times. When he got it back we laughed about it. Should we have laughed about something like that? Nah, but we were sophomoric sophomores... or something. Immaturity. Hell, I don't know. |
