Free Beer!

For folks in Phoenix anyway. Guess where Arles wants to go tomorrow night?

Homer Simpson would be in heaven.

ReZurrection Gallery in Tempe, courtesy of Four Peaks Brewing Company, will be giving out free beer (to those with a valid I.D.) at an exhibit opening from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday celebrating "The Art of Beer."

Appropriately, the subject of the show is about 150 neon beer signs representing about 30 brands, from vintage 1960s to current-day models.

People will sip fine microbrews amidst a soft-colored glow as they admire the craftsmanship of a vintage blinking "Miller" sign or the jaunty curves of the tubes spelling out "St. Pauli Girl."

Hops-heads can thank Larry Graham, owner of Graham's Neon in Mesa, for this evening of brew bliss. He has amassed the signs throughout the years - mostly from people who bring them in broken and sell them to him.

He said he's liquidating the lot because - no spit-takes, please - he's not really a collector of beer signs. "When you (fix them) all day, you don't really care to look at one at night," he said.

They'll be tagged from $90 to $400 and will make a great complement to any home, assuming the homeowners want to re-create the ambience of a corner pub.

In fact, ReZurrection Gallery co-owner Darci Johnson said, bar décor is quite the rage.

"People are always looking for neon signs and we don't have any," she said. Until now, of course. She said customers are always looking for free-standing bars, too.

"Instead of putting in a dining room table," she said, "they'll put in a bar."

It's all part of the Rat Pack trend in home furnishings: "Cocktails are back in vogue. Young people are having cocktail parties," Johnson said. She said one customer even decorated a whole room in cocktail couture, including photos of Frank Sinatra and a black vinyl padded bar.

ReZurrection Gallery also carries vintage barware, which is priced at 25 percent off through the end of January. The show runs through Feb. 9.

I think I've been to that gallery once before, many moons ago, back when I lived in Phoenix. It wasn't much to look at, and it doesn't surprise me that they need to give away free beer to get people to come out.

I think a couple of these neon signs would make a lovely addition to any home! Maybe you and Arles should invest and redecorate
