House Arrest--FOF5.1b Style

HOUSE RULES

BEGINNING
: Empty Cupboard fictional league. Sim through 2004, cut all players on my team, start Empty Cupboard in 2005.

TICKET PRICES: Price comparison may at no time exceed prices of Tennessee and Carolina.

STAFF: No hiring new staff until contracts run out on old staff.

RENEGOTIATIONS: Cap outs only. No extensions or other contract restructuring. If he's overpaid, I either have to suck it up, or cut him. If I want to keep a guy around, I have to sign him on the open market.

FRANCHISE TAG: A player may be given the franchise tag only once in his career. After that, I'd better hope he's still willing to sign with me on the open market.

DRAFTING: A few restrictions on when QB's can be taken. It can be too easy to acquire a solid QB in the draft at times. I want to restrict that as follows:

Round 1: If his future potential is 70 or better, I must trade up into the Top 5 picks to draft him if I want him.
Round 2: Future potential must be <55
Round 3: Future potential must be <50
Rounds 4 and beyond: Future potential must be <45

I think this will allow for a bit more realism in how I acquire QB's.

RESTRICTED FREE AGENCY: If I want to re-sign one of my RFA's, I must do it in the very first week of the 20-step process.

20-STEP PROCESS
: I'll start with a version of the FOFL's house rule for FA signings: Any contract offer totaling more than 10% of the current salary cap must include at least 20% of its total value in a signing bonus.

8-STEP PROCESS: All offers to non-rookies in Late Free Agency must be made in the very first week of that stage.

TRADES: Pick(s) for picks or pick(s) for player(s) only. No trading away player(s) for pick(s). Trading only allowed during Amateur Draft stage.

To make this as difficult as possible. I quicksimmed a few times until my team won the Front Office Bowl in 2004, thus giving me the worst possible drafting situation with which to begin. Let's see how well I can do.

DRAFT
1(32)--QB Norbert Nybo--18/61--Pretty impressive bars and combine. He's a potentially long-term solution.
2(32)--SE Clay Dresback--23/44--Pretty decent-looking punt return ratings, and I expect that he'll be much better than advertised as a receiver, too.
3(32)--MLB Donovan Stone--21/51--Solid run defender. Could be leading tackler for a long time.
4(32)--RCB Brett Raffensperge--18/47--Pretty decent coverage skills for this late in the draft.
5(32)--TE Roosevelt Polk--17/48--Could be a solid pass-catching TE.
6(32)--WLB Bernard Hoover--21/42--May be good enough to start at SLB.
7(32)--RB John Stine--27/38--Mr. Irrelevant, but he'll probably end up as a starter, at least for this season.

Not many surprises here, although the play of SE Jake Hahn is worth noting. He might turn into a pretty good possession receiver for us. Considering that Dresback is more of a deep threat, they could be a pretty potent combination.

DRAFT
1(4)--RDT Jeffrey Crawford--49/71--Big ol' run-stopping defensive tackle.
2(4)--RCB Carl Morris--29/55--Potentially very good cover corner.
3(4)--LT Phil Andrews--16/50--If he can live up to his decent potential, it would be nice. A bit of a reach, I think.
4(4)--RG Kent Boeck--14/44--A high performer at the combine.
5(4)--TE Glenn Buchanan--26/44--Nice combine. With a little luck, he can complete the starting receiver corps.
6(4)--LCB Fernando Buckner--19/34--6.88 agility score, decent elsewhere. Worth a shot this late, imho.
7(4)--RT Henry Price--8/40--Unlikely to pan out, but if he does, he could be an above average pass blocker.

Of note is that 7th-round draft choice RT Price is an immediate breakout, and 3rd-rounder LT Andrews only dropped one point. It would be VERY nice to see these two guys pan out and become our bookend tackles. Also of note is that 1st-round pick Crawford ruptures his Achilles Tendon in the preseason and misses the entire season.

Hmmmm....QB Nybo took a significant step back, stats-wise, using pretty much the same game plan as last year's. If he doesn't get it going better than this next year, I may be looking at another QB. A relatively bright spot was the play of RB Antoine Donaldson.

For the first time, two of my staff members' contracts expire. I failed to mention that another thing hampering this career is that my scout is Poor in Young Talent. His contract runs out after this year. The Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator whose contracts run out this year are pretty good, but better options are available. I rehire my 51-year-old Head Coach (G/G/G/VG/VG) for a four-year stint, and I hire a new Offensive Coordinator (VG/G/G/VG/AVG/VG, age 53) to a 4-year deal.

I get two bits of really bad injury-related news: Last year's first round pick, RDT Jeffrey Crawford, dropped all the way from 52/71 to 23/41 in the offseason. Also, SLB Bernard Hoover drops from 36/45 to 18/24.

In free agency this year, I sign a 9 2nd and 3rd-year guys who are available and are better than my current starters, but at this point I'll only mention the three who graded at 4.0 or better....

K Richard Conway--5.7--Rated 67/96 in accuracy, mediocre elsewhere. Should be good enough at this point. 2-year deal.
FB Carl Singleton--4.1--Pretty good blocker and safety valve receiver.
SLB Jon McElroy--4.7--68/100 in run defense. Good pass rusher. Below average coverage skills. He gets a modest 3-year deal.

DRAFT
I have the 1(1) pick this year. With SO many needs, I decide to deal it to get more draft picks. I drop down to #5, and also pick up the 2(5), the 3(5), and the GB first round picks for the next two seasons.

1(5)--MLB Al Stephenson--50/89--A likely star in an important defensive position.
2(1)--RB Stan Hevey--29/48--4.45 speed and good-looking elsewhere.
2(5)--LCB Randall Lentz--22/41--Lots of signs are there that he could be a shut-down corner for us.
3(1)--SS Geoff Estell--21/37--Should help against both the run and the pass.
3(5)--FB Renaldo Wilcox--48/72--Yeah, I signed a FA, but this guy should be a stud.
4(1)--RCB Lawrence Hinojosa--12/48--With a little luck, this draft could now finish off our secondary.
5(1)--LT Antonio Huntley--13/43--I move him to RG.
6(1)--QB Brock Money--13/40--Just in case he's needed...
7(1)--SE Reggie Freeman--21/39--Only four WR's under contract, and this guy could be something.

Immediately after the draft, LCB Lentz drops to 13/26, but RCB Hinojosa jumps up to 13/54. Lentz may go unsigned.

QB Nybo suffered a compound leg fracture in week 10. Ouch! I'm also concerned about RCB Carl Morris, who suffered a 33-week torn quad in the last game of the season. Defensively, we didn't play all that poorly, and we were pretty good against the pass. Looks like I need a defensive lineman or two to help stop the run, and I'll be ok. The offense is still up in the air though.

Forgot to mention that MLB Al Stephenson was named defensive rookie of the year and SLB Jon McElroy was named 1st Team All Pro.

I'm able to get rid of my horrid scout, and get a decent one. He's Good in Young Talent and Defensive Linemen. I sign him to a one-year deal.

QB Nybo drops all the way to 22/30, and can no longer be considered a serious candidate to lead this team. RCB Morris picks up one point, and is out for 8 more weeks. Hopefully, he'll fully recover.

A few key players become RFA's this year, and get decent-sized contracts. The biggest goes to FL Clay Dresback: 5 years, $39.5M. I'm still nowhere near the cap, so I can re-sign everyone I want. Most accept little to no bonus.

In free agency this year, I signed four defensive linemen with run-stopping skills, 3 tackles and 1 end. The best of them is LDT Clarence Bivins, who is rated 57/71 in run defense, 56/66 in diagnosis, and 42/48 overall. He's a fourth year man who started 24 games for Miami over the past two seasons. He gets a five-year deal worth $21.25M.

DRAFT
Due to my trade last year, I have the #7 pick in the first round, going along with the #8 pick in rounds 1-7. The player I want most is likely to go #1 overall. It takes both 1st-rounders and one first-rounder from next year, along with 2(7) and 3(7), but I'm thinking it will be worth it. Here's the draft:

1(1)--RDE Hunter Branch--51/84--If he pans out, he should be a GREAT player.
4(8)--SE Ernest Freeman--18/45--I could use another good receiver. Hopefully Freeman can fit the bill. He also has some kick return skills.
5(8)--TE Desmond Lieberman--26/48--Neither of the TE's I've drafted so far look like the solution there.

Counting the draft, I will have 59 players under contract, so I trade away 6(8) and 7(8) for a 5th rounder next year.

After preseason, former first-rounder Jeffrey Crawford gets cut. Might as well take the cap hit now. He's down to 35/40. He had a major injury in his very first season. As the season approaches, RCB Morris drop to 31/34 and gets put on IR for the season.

Bottom line: I need to find a QB. Burke came back from injury, then got hurt again, but I doubt that he's the solution.

Working on 2009 right now, but had to go ahead and post this. I have the #2 pick in the draft. Meet Sammy "The Solution" Summers.

This year brings a new scout and defensive coordinator. The scout is signed to a 3-year deal, and is best at young talent, QB's and RB's. The D-Coordinator is quite good overall, and is young. He gets a five-year deal.

Free agency rolls around, and a player that, to my experience, is a rarity in 5.1b is available: a very good QB in his 5th season. Jacksonville's QB Marty McKnight, drafted 1(14) in 2005, had an 87.7 rating last season. I pursue him hard, but he signs with Tampa Bay. Former 2(1) pick RB Stan Hevey gets cut. Also cut is former 2(4) pick Carl Morris, who was severely impacted by an injury. I also sign the following players worth noting:

RG Robert Tyler--6.9--This 5th-year man, drafted 1(13) by the Eagles, was All Pro last year. He should provide immediate help on the offensive line.
C Ian Lofton--5.7--I re-sign him on the open market.

DRAFT
I have the #2 pick in round 1, and the #1 in the other 6 rounds. I also have the 5(19) pick. As was mentioned in the previous post, I get a stud QB. Nice!

1(2)--QB Sammy "The Solution" Summers--35/74--There's really nothing that I don't like about this guy. Hopefully this phenom will pan out and avoid injury.
2(1)--LG Rodney Jeffries--35/57--LG is right now the weakest link along the offensive line. Looks like he can shore it up.
3(1)--WLB Rex Pierce--20/55--Another "weak link" position right now.
4(1)--LT Lionel Rice--15/47--Only two tackles are under contract.
5(1)--FL Bob Goldsmith--17/43--Has a chance to be a solid WR3.
5(19)--LCB Shawn Connell--22/37--Probably a stretch for him to pan out, but it is getting late in the draft.
6(1)--MLB Dixon Otis--22/38--Probably no better than a backup.
7(1)--RB Howard Conroy--33/36--Big and strong back.

In important post-camp news, "The Solution" is up to 41/75. Also of note is that Rodney Jeffries is now 41/63 and Shawn Connell is 26/47.

Sammy "The Solution" Summers leads us to our first playoff appearance--a wild card berth. The defense, led by 1st Team All Pro RDE Hunter Branch, stepped it up a notch as well. RT Henry Price was a First Team All-Pro, but suffered a ruptured achilles tendon in the playoff game. Here's hoping for a full recovery. All in all, I am pleased. What's better is that 15 of my 22 starters are under contract for next year--a very important figure considering the house rules I'm using.

The entire staff remains this year. SLB Jon McElroy gets franchised and then signed to a five-year deal.

Most of my FA moves are simply re-signings of players from last year, with two exceptions:

FL Scott Macon--4.0--2yrs/$2.11M--He's a possession-type receiver. I sign him as insurance/WR3. He's a 6th-year man who has never caught more than 33 passes in a season to date.
RB Josh Finister--8.6--3yrs/$39.0M--He's a 6th-year man, rated 79/81. I figure with an improving offensive line and QB, and a still-pretty good cap situation for now, I'd spend big bucks on a flat 3-year contract fro a stud. I doubt I'll re-sign him for anything close to this kind of money when the contract is up, but I could use a rent-a-stud to help take us to the next level.

DRAFT
1(22)--RCB Richard Wiggins--30/66--Great coverage skills and solid punt returning to boot, and I only have four CB's under contract.
2(22)--SS Butch Humphrey--30/49--Good speed, size and strength.
3(22)--FL Randall Dodge--29/45--Could be quite good.
4(22)--RB Austin Kimble--32/38--Quite fast for a 244-pounder. A potential T.J. Duckett clone.
5(22)--FS Joel Randle--12/47--A smart and athletic player.

With a near-full roster, I trade my final two picks for a 5th rounder next year. The first four picks all increase in potential, and Randle only drops one point.

In training camp, FA rookie QB R.J. Mahoney gains from 20/44 to 25/50. Another undrafted player, MLB Rick Ball, goes from 24/41 to 29/46. Also, 4th-round pick RB Austin Kimble goes from 32/38-->34/42.

RESULTS
Sammy Summers was injured twice during the season, neither one major, but as a result only played in 7 games. He had a 92.1 passer rating in 166 attempts, and probably could have really been a difference-maker. In addition to the two injuries to Summers, two players suffer major injuries: RG Robert Tyler (Reconstructive Knee Surgery) and SLB Jon McElroy (Ruptured Achilles).

Injuries taken into consideration, this was a pretty good year, and I won't lose that many key pieces to free agency, if any at all. If "The Solution" can play a full season next year, I could contend for a title.

My head coach and o-coordinator both have contracts run out. I end up with a new o-coordinator with similar skills, and the same head coach. K Richard Conway gets the franchise tag.

For the first time, I have to make some actual hard decisions when free agency rolls around. Looking down the roster, the only position that I'd look to upgrade would be RDT, and it turns out that our FA, Jeff Salgado, is the best available 7-year-and-under guy. He gets a four-year deal worth $6M per year. In other FA news, I don't immediately attempt to re-sign SE Jake Hahn, despite his 134 catches for 2000+ yards over the last two seasons. He's only rated 41/41, and I hope to be able to re-sign him later on. If not, Ernest Freeman looks better ratings-wise anyway. No new players get signed.

DRAFT
1(16)--RG Johnnie Henderson--36/57--Starting RG Robert Tyler's future is uncertain, as he's still recovering from knee surgery.
2(16)--TE Timothy Prior--25/46--This guy had an other-worldly combine. I need a backup TE anyway, and I'm unsure whether or not I'll re-sign Glenn Buchanan in late free agency.
3(16)--LT Erik Buchanan--14/40--All three tackles on my roster are in the final year of a contract.
4(16)--LCB Bart Holmes--15/41--Signs of a breakout player.
5(4)--WLB Terry Mayes--12/41--I need depth here.
5(16)--RDT Mack Hoover--19/39--Has some pass-rushing skills, and I need a fourth DT on the roster.
6(16)--LDE Kent Garrison--17/39--Could be a decent backup.

In late free agency, I'm pushed right up against the cap and end up having to decide between SE Jake Hahn and TE Glenn Buchanan. Because Timothy Prior jumped up to 26/50 before training camp, I sign Hahn.

After camp, Prior continues to rise. His climb to 30/56 makes me feel very good about letting Glenn Buchanan fly. Also, Kent Garrison is up to 22/45, and Bart Holmes is up to 19/46. Looks like this will prove to be a productive draft for us.

Heh. The playoff loss was on the frozen tundra: 10 degrees at Green Bay for that one. On the whole, I am very, very pleased, although Sammy Summers is starting to show signs of being injury-prone, as do RB Finister and C Lofton. Lofton only played in 5 games this year, and had THREE different injuries, the last requiring ACL Surgery that may cause him to miss all of 2012. As is shown by the stats, we really didn't have any glaring weaknesses this year. However, several key players are FA-eligible next year, so keeping this team together will be a definite challenge. RDE Hunter Branch was named 1st-Team All Pro for the second time in his 4-year career.

Well since you never got an answer, I don't know how he did it, but I think it was Quik who made his offensive gameplan to where the offense runs the ball up the middle 100% of the plays. 0-16 easy.

But you read SD's post wrong, he actually got the best record, well maybe not best but he won the SB, so he had the worst pick.

I can only assume he re-loaded a few times to get his final happy results.

Only my scout's contract is up, and I sign a better one. He's VG at young talent, and Good or Average everywhere else.

MLB Al Stephenson gets the franchise tag. Sammy Summers makes a nice 12-point jump to 90/90 in the offseason.

It is clear that these house rules are going to bring about some tough decisions, rather than just cap finagling. The first major one comes this offseason: RB Josh Finister, despite his pretty ratings, isn't worth the highest salary on this team, and he gets cut in the final year of his contract, saving me $8M in precious cap room. I *love* being forced to make that kind of decision. I'm getting solid production from far cheaper backs, so he's gone. I also have to make the tough decision to let 59/62 LCB Shawn Connell go elsewhere as an RFA. With Finister's salary freed up, I'm able to re-sign several starters and key backups, including SE Freeman, RT Price, and LCB Hatcher. I also keep QB Mahoney around as a backup, and sign a few new players:

RB Chris Parrish--3.4--2yrs/$1.94M--Could give us some decent carries.
LT Maurice Levens--4.8--2yrs/$4M--Will start at LT. Mediocre at both run and pass blocking.

DRAFT
1(28)-WLB Nate Bayer--31/60--Best player available, and I only have 3 OLB's under contract. Also big enough to play MLB.
2(28)--WLB Peter Sarmiento--30/51--Another BPA, but I have a plan for how to handle the positions.
3(28)--LDT Aaron Ogden--15/41--May be better suited to play DE, but I need one of those, too.
4(28)--RDT Conrad Wolfe--21/44--Primarily a pass-rusher. Backup RDT Hoover moves over to LDT.
5(28)--RG Joey Denis--17/36--Strong, smart and quick. Worth a shot in the late rounds...
6(6)--RB Billy Donovan--28/36--This kid outta Clemson caught my eye at one of the combines.
6(28)--QB Luke Lucas--13/41--Probably nothing better than roster filler at QB.

I move Bayer to MLB. Franchisee MLB Stephenson only has a one-year deal, so if all goes according to plan, Bayer takes over in middle next year, and Sarmiento fights for playing time at OLB. Bayer jumps to 32/68 as MLB. I also move Odgen to LDE, and he increases to 13/45. Denis moves over to LG. Bottom line: All seven picks increase in ratings right after the draft.

I got a new stadium approved. A big ol' 80,000 seat monster with natural grass. It'll be ready in 2017.

Training camp brings more good news. An undrafted player worth nothing is SLB Geoff Castillot, who went from 23/33 to 26/43 and causes me to cut last year's 5th-round pick, WLB Terry Mayes. Nate Bayer is up to 33/73, and pretty much assures that this will be Al Stephenson's last year in a Falcon uniform. Also, two undrafted WR's increase from 36 future potential to 41. Their names are Skip Hickman and Gerald Quinoz, and may be worth noting.

RESULTS
SLB Jon McElroy suffers a ruptured achilles tendon. SS Geoff Estell undergoes reconstructive knee surgery. Summers goes down with a high ankle sprain in Week 11, and misses nearly the entire postseason making me *very* glad that I figured out a way to keep R.J. Mahoney around. He's questionable for the Front Office Bowl, but he starts it....and WINS IT!

Well, uh, I guess "RB Chris Parrish--3.4--2yrs/$1.94M--Could give us some decent carries." was the understatement of the year, huh? This 35/38 running back got it DONE for us this year, and cost us a paltry $880K under the cap. I wonder if he'll hold out next year, as he'll only be making $1.06M. Heck, even if he does want big bucks, that one season was worth it. And, for those of you scoring at home, RB Josh Finister signed a fat four-year deal with the Bungles, and suffered a torn rotator cuff in Week 5, missing the rest of the season. His numbers? 67 carries, 265 yards, 3.95ypc, 1TD.

What's best about this title is that it shouldn't be terribly difficult to keep most of the team together. In all likelihood we'll say goodbye to MLB Al Stephenson because of the emergence of Nate Bayer, but otherwise I wouldn't be surprised to be able to afford to keep nearly every other key player. We may end up making a cut or two due to injury decline, though (looks in SLB Jon McElroy's direction), but the bottom line is that somewhere around 20-21 of the 22 Front Office Bowl starters will probably be Falcons again next year.

All coaches/scouts remain under contract, so no changes there. First thing to note is that SLB Jon McElroy drops all the way to 27/28 and gets cut. He'll count 1.36M against the cap this year and next, so nothing huge lost there. I probably won't sign anyone to replace him. Undrafted rookie FA Geoff Castillo started 14 regular season games and the entire postseason, and we did, uh, well enough with him. No one else still under contract suffers a significant injury decline.

I use the franchise tag on LG Rodney Jeffries. The former 2(1) pick is rated 85/85, and is a two-time All Pro in only four seasons.

Well, I managed to get outbid in attempting to re-sign FB Renaldo Wilcox, so I sign another. In addition, I make a few decisions to fine-tune the team, specifically to address our defensive weakness last year--stopping the run. I let SS Butch Humphrey become a FA. He has good overall ratings, but mainly due to his coverage skills. He's only 38 in run defense--not the kind of strong safety I need right now. Here are the new guys:

FB Phil Farrish--6.5--5yrs/$17.5M--He's actually a better run blocker than Wilcox, and a decent safety-valve receiver as well. He's a 6th-year man.
SS Glen Nikaido--5.0--2yrs/$2.2M--Much better run defender than Humphrey was, and not bad coverage skills.

No earth-shattering changes for the reigning champs.

DRAFT
1(32)--SS Carlton Mooney--36/65--FA signee Nikaido is just a short-term fix. This guy could be long-term.
2(13)--RCB Junior Michl--25/52--I trade 2(32) and 3(32) to get this pick. He looks worth it to me.
4(32)--RCB Zach Bullock--17/43--I'll figure out how to keep 6 CB's happy for a year or two, but I can't pass him up.
5(32)--WLB Warren Webb--19/40--Only three OLB's under contract.
6(32)--P Bobby Perry--67/81--Already better than my current punter.
7(32)--RB Bruce Price--21/35--Here's hoping Mr. Irrelevant 2013 can be productive one day.

Looks like a nice draft.

NOTABLE POST-CAMP CHANGES
RCB Michl is up to 30/60
WLB Webb is 22/45
RCB Zach Bullock--22/50--(Told ya I couldn't pass him up. Moved to LCB)
RB Price drops and doesn't make the team.

The Panthers were our undoing this year, defeating us twice in a four-week span when it mattered most. That's a real shame, because our three best players--our three All-Pro's this year (QB Summers, LG Jeffries, and RDE Branch)--are becoming free agents after this year. It is highly doubtful that I'll be able to keep all three around. It may be transition time in Atlanta...

BAD timing there, Ben. I've got an expensive stadium under construction, and my coach and both coordinators' salaries all run out, leaving me with having to hire all three after a season of heavy financial loss. I make sure everyone is signed past the time that the stadium will run out, and make offers to the cheapest decent-looking guys out there. I manage to grab a G/E/E/G/E d-coordinator in the first stage, a VG/G/A/G/VG/VG o-coordinator in the second, and a G/VG/VG/VG/E head coach in the third. All but the d-coordinator are a step down from the kinds of guys I had, but all are livable, so that's good.

Tough decision on the franchise tag. Summers would be a no-brainer, if it wasn't for R.J. Mahoney. Mahoney is also a FA this year, but surely could be kept on for MUCH less cash. On the other hand, there are no obvious on-roster replacements for RDE Branch or LG Jeffries. Looking over the FA list, though, it looks like I could find a solid-or-better guard more easily than an end or QB. Because I have two QB's to pursue, and the next-best DE to Branch in the current pool is only 58/58, I decide to put the franchise tag on RDE Hunter Branch. {Gulp.}

Free agency rolls around, and I get more of what I wanted with these house rules. When the dust settles, here are the key players who depart:

OUT WITH THE OLD...
QB Sammy "The Solution" Summers--He wanted an astronomical amount: 5yrs/$188.47M, with a $51M bonus. My owner wouldn't even allow that much bonus money to be paid out, and also wouldn't allow the salaries he wanted in the last three seasons of the deal. I tried to put together a shorter deal to his liking, but even that didn't work out. He signs a 5-year deal worth $196.18M with Oakland, with a bonus of $46.35M.
RB Howard Conroy--Only 3.88 ypc last year, and would have cost over $2M in cap space this year, so he gets cut.
RB Chris Parrish--one-year wonder, apparently. He becomes a FA.
SE Jake Hahn--The 10-year vet is still a pretty good possession receiver, but I have a bunch of good receivers.
LG Rodney Jeffries--I get outbid for him by San Diego, to the tune of a $24.55M signing bonus.
LDE Herman Grogan--I wanted the price to come down, and I waited too long. He immediately took the first offer get got, an $8.67M/3yr deal from Denver. He's not all that talented, but I liked his cheap price tag and cohesion help.
SLB Geoff Castillo--He wanted a pretty big contract, and I've got good young LB's. I move Rex Pierce over from WLB, and still have Sarmiento and Webb to battle for the starting job on the weak side.
LCB Richard Wiggins--His piss-poor run defense (0/2) always limited him to mainly being a nickel back, and he wants starter-caliber cash to remain a Falcon. Buh-Bye. Philly gives him a 13.7M signing bonus.

...AND IN WITH THE NEW
RG Gabe Harmon--5.2--3yrs/$7.5M--He'll start at left guard in place of Rodney Jeffries. Decent all around.
RDE Cary Cash--3.6--3yrs/$4.5M--He'll start at LDE. Pretty good run-stopping skill, which is the main thing I need there.

Most importantly, R.J. Mahoney decides to remain a Falcon. He gets a flat contract that'll cost me only $5M in cap room for each of the next four seasons. Here's hoping he can cut down on his INT's a bit. Everything else about him looks pretty good. Here's his player card, as of the time I sign him:

Pretty big changes this year, all made necessary by the impact of the House Arrest rules. Liking it so far.

Another thing worth mentioning as far as the dynasty goes is that our 2007 6(1) pick, QB Brock Money, signed a 5-year deal with Tampa Bay this year. He's improved over the years, and had a solid season with Buffalo last season: 326 for 540, 3780 yards, 21 TD's, 13 INT's, 84.4 QB rating. We'll be facing him in our own division now.

DRAFT
1(29)--QB Conrad Butterworth--18/59--R.J. Mahoney isn't exactly a sure thing anyway, and with some development, Butterworth might end up being better than Mahoney.
2(29)--SS Phillip Hoffman--25/60--Fast enough to play CB, but big and strong enough to be a run-stopper as well. Will get moved to FS due to his 4.42 speed, and the presence of young probable-stud-to-be SS Carlton Mooney.
3(29)--RT Allen Tom--20/43--Perhaps a bit of a reach. Will get moved to LT.
4(29)--SLB Jerome Sawyer--18/44--He had a pretty nice combine and may have some upside.
5(29)--RB Ryan Wright--25/38--I have only two under contract.

In late free agency, I pick up a pretty solid-looking FB as a backup, Omar Syvrud.

Sawyer and Wright are both cut after the pre-season.

Heh. I was thinking "transitional year" at the start of the season, but R.J. Mahoney was thinking otherwise, despite an anemic running game. But for an injury to leading receiver Ernest Freeman in the NFC Championship game that kept him out of the Front Office Bowl, we probably would have won the whole shebang. It was Mahoney, Mahoney, and more Mahoney this year. That $5M cap cost is right now looking like the best bargain in football, and he's signed at that level through 2017. Next year is a "good-news-bad-news" situation. The bad: 8 Front Office Bowl starters, and several other pretty key players become FA's after this year. The good: It looks like I'll start the year with nearly half of the salary cap free: over $70M. I should be able to craft the 2015 Falcons very much to my desires.

Oh yeah, RDE Hunter Branch won his fourth 1st-Team All Pro Award. The Raiders didn't put much of a team around Sammy "The Solution" Summers. He had a 91.5 rating, with 19 Td's and 5 INT's in 12 starts, but the Raiders only went 7-9.

All staff members remain under contract, and none are liabilities.

It is a fairly easy decision to pin the franchise tag on RCB Lawrence Hinojosa. He's our best DB, and only two other CB's--both young--are under contract.

Yup. Hard decisions still abound. The frustrating part, however, is that I'm not sure I'll ever be able to hold on to a marquee player under these rules. I may add an exception to renegotiating--something along the lines of: "One player on your roster may be designated as a renegotiation exception. He may be renegotiated with at any time with no house rules. However, as long as he is on your my roster, all other player are subject to the house rules." This might allow me to be creative with a stud like Sammy Summers or Hunter Branch. I'll think more about it, and perhaps implement something next year. At any rate...

OUT WITH THE OLD...
RDE Hunter Branch--Under these house rules, I simply can't afford to keep a marquee player past his rookie contract and franchise year. I'll definitely make a change in that house rule next year. It lowers the fun factor when none of my top-tier players can stick around. The Raiders sing him to a 5 yr/$150.90M deal.
RT Henry Price--Former 7(4) pick is a 2-time All Pro, but suffered a big ratings drop after an injury. He has mentored former backup (and former undrafted FA,) 6th-year man Don Chauvlier to the point where the two are now equal in current ratings, and Chauvlier has some upside. I take a minor ($1.6M) cap hit this year and next year in cutting Price.
TE Timothy Prior--He has very nice pass-catching abilities, but never developed into having decent run-blocking skills, so I decide to keep Lieberman on as TE. Prior signs with Jax.
SE Ernest Freeman--Yeah, he caught 72 passes for 1,154 yards, but I saw what I perceived to be a better, cheaper option in free agency. I hope I don't regret not pursuing him. Da Bears sign him.
TE Desmond Lieberman--Well, I TRIED to keep Lieberman on as TE, but the ungrateful wretch signed with the Cowboys.
RDT Jeff Salgado--There was a better, younger, cheaper run-stopping RDT available.
SS Glen Nikaido--He'd been pushed out of a starting job last year anyway.
LT Allen Tom--Last year's 3(29) pick has a conflict with position leader, and dropped 3 points.

...AND IN WITH THE NEW
MLB Quinn Leff--5.5--3yrs/$6.0M--A steal at this price. He should provide a quality backup for Nate Bayer.
RDT J.C. Burns--3.7--3yrs/$4.5M--This third-year man is a pretty decent run-stopping DT. He should get decent playing time.
FL Renaldo Lowe--6.7--4yrs/$31M--9th-year WR who knows how to get open. Clay Dresback will move over to SE.
TE Eddie Graham--4.4--2yrs/$2.8M--Since I didn't get to keep either of my two solid TE's, I grabbed this guy. Former undrafted FA who is an excellent run-blocker, and half-decent receiver as well.
RB Chris Parrish--3.2--1yr/$1.18M--I bring him back as a cheap backup.
RDE Nolan Villagomez-6.9--3yrs/$6.9M--He's a liability against the run, but a pretty good pass-rusher.

More significant changes. I think with the addition of the keep-a-stud-exception, I'm *really* going to love this set of rules.

DRAFT
1(31)--TE Lee Morrison--44/70--There's not much to dislike about this guy. Could be all-around stud. Could start this year.
2(31)--C Mitch Douglas--21/63--Looks like he's got what it takes to eventually start.
3(31)--RG Junior Brkich--23/48--Better at pass blocking than run, but could be decent at run.
4(31)--LCB Corwin Drake--18/47--I'm thinking he'll improve.
5(10)--RT Mel Colbert--20/40--Best current rating of any remaining tackle.
5(31)--LDT Heath Seibert--20/43--Will get moved to LDE. Run-stopper.
6(31)--WLB Edwin Brady--20/34--Might be better than advertised. Will be moved to SLB.
7(31)--RB Dean Broome--26/35--Taking a flier on him.

In late free agency, I pick up a pretty solid-looking FB as a backup, Omar Syvrud.

Sawyer and Wright are both cut after the pre-season.

Interesting season. We were inconsistent on offense all year, but still managed to go 14-2. However, the inconsistency bit us in the but in the playoffs. The main source of the inconsistency was QB R.J. Mahoney. He was The Good (4,037 yards, 7.86 ypa), The Bad (57.8 completion percentage), and The Ugly (23 Interceptions) all in the same year, and in our playoff loss, he was just plain ugly. Conrad Butterworth continues to develop, and I have to consider when he might be ready to take over for Mahoney if R.J. puts up another year like this.
