FOF2004: NFL Invades The Aloha State
Arizona Cardinals On The Move?
Phoenix, AZ (AP) - After years of frustration, including losing records, lack of attendance, no profits and only one playoff appearance in 21 years, owner William Bidwill has decided to move the team. The team and the city of Honolulu has reached an agreement in principle for the Cardinals to move to Hawaii for the start of the 2004 season. If the vote is finalized by the other NFL owners, the Cardinals would become the Honolulu Hawaiians. Furthur details to follow. Last edited by jshipman2 : 11-25-2004 at 10:47 AM. |

Owners Approve Move
Phoenix, AZ (AP) - The NFL approved the move of the Arizona Cardinals to Honolulu Hawaii by a unanimous vote of 32-0. The move will be effective for the start of the 2004 season. For now the Hawaiians will play at Aloha Stadium until a 73,000 seat facility can be built for the 2006 season. Owner William Bidwill has announced that he should be ready to name a new GM within the next couple of days. |

Hawaiians Introduce GM
![]() Honolulu, HI (AP) - Honolulu Hawaiians owner William Bidwill called a news conference at 11am this morning to annouce a change in the Hawaiians organization. Bidwill has decided to relinguish GM duties. Bidwill was quick to hire someone to replace him, as he has decided to hire Justin Shipman. Shipman graduated from Pittsburg State University, a Division II college, in December 2000. For the last two years, he has worked with the Pitt State football program as a regional scout. "I very happy with Mr. Bidwill's decision to hire me. It has long been a dream of mine to one day be the General Manager of an NFL franchise. I wish the best of luck to Coach Broyles and the Pitt State football program. Our first order of business is going to be for me and the coaching staff to evaluate our roster and the free agent market and try to see where and how we can improve this team." |

I predict an 8-8 season every year.
8-0 at home, as every team that flies in suffers from jet lag and sunday morning hangovers, and 0-8 on the road as your boys suffer from jet lag and cry about not being in Hawaii anymore. ![]() |

![]() ![]() 2004 Preseason Week 1: Bye Week 2: Honolulu (0-0) @ Minnesota (0-0) Line: Minnesota by 10 Preview: The Honolulu Hawaiians history officially begins with our first exhibition game of the 2004 season against the Minnesota Vikings. Not expecting too much in this game as we try to get the feel for a lot of new players and personnel. Result: The first quarter started off very sloppy as both teams opened with three and outs. On our second possession QB Terrell Wickham hit WR Anquan Boldin for 17 yards, Boldin would fumble but was able to recover. On the next play, Wickham threw an interception. Minnesota took over at their own 45. The were able to move the ball to our 46 yard line and it looked as though we stopped them on 4th and 1. But we got called for offsides on the punt and Minnesota kept the ball and that would lead to a 51-yd FG from K Morten Anderson, giving the Vikings a 3-0 lead. Minnesota would put together another nice drive at the end of the 1st quarter and Anderson would miss a 42-yd FG wide right with 9:18 left in the 2nd quarter. It looked as though we would respond after Wickham hit WR Larry Fitzgerald for a 2-yd gain and Boldin for 34-yds. After a 3-yd run from RB Troy Hambrick, RB Emmitt Smith bust through for a 7-yd gain down to the MIN22. But on the next play, Wickham would get sacked and lose the football and it would be recovered by Minnesota at their own 28. The Vikings would take the ball and march down to our 34 but the defense held and Anderson would miss another FG, this time a 51-yarder wide left. After two straight runs that got us nowhere, Wickham broke off a 25-yd scramble that kept the drive alive. Wickham then hit TE Les Torres for a 6-yd gain and RB Marcel Shipp added six yards on three straight carries to setup a K Neil Rackers 37-yd FG with :26 left to send it to halftime 3-3. Rackers kicked off to Minnesota to start the 3rd quarter and WR Randy Moss took the kickoff and returned it 97-yds for a TOUCHDOWN!!! After another stalled drive by our offense, the Vikes marched 46-yds on eleven plays to setup another Anderson FG of 51-yds for a 13-3 lead. QB Otis Hansen and the offense responded with Hansen hitting 5/9 passes for 56 yards on the drive that setup a 39-yd FG from Rackers, cutting the lead to 13-6. That is as close as we would get as the Vikings added a QB Gus Frerotte 5-yd TOUCHDOWN pass to RB Moe Williams and a 10-yd TOUCHDOWN run from RB Michael Bennett. Final Score: Vikings 26, Hawaiians 6 Game MVP: MIN DE Kenny Mixon - 2 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble Injuries: SS Adrian Wilson - Broken Finger (Probable: 2 Weeks) C Alex Stepanovich - Strained Elbow Tendon (Out: 5 Weeks) Offensive Leaders: Rushing: QB Terrell Wickham - 3 carries, 27 yds, 0 TDs Passing: QB Otis Hansen - 9/21, 101 yds, 0 TDs, 0 INTs Receiving: WR Anquan Boldin - 7 rec., 103 yds, 0 TDs Defensive Leaders: LB Raynoch Thompson - 7 tackles, 4 assists, 1 sack LB Ronald McKinnon - 7 tackles, 3 assists Last edited by jshipman2 : 12-02-2004 at 05:19 PM. |

![]() ![]() 2004 Preseason Week 3: San Diego (1-0) @ Honolulu (0-1) Line: San Diego by 4 Preview: The team performed about like we expected they would in our first preseason game. If we are to win any games this year we must get a running game. Hopefully, one of the RB's will step up this game and give us some nice runs to open up the passing game. Result: The game got off to a quick start for us as we won the toss and took the opening drive 87-yards on 10 plays, capped off with a QB Terrell Wickham 12-yard scramble for a TD. The Chargers first possession set the tone for the rest of the game, as they were forced to punt and the punt was fielded by WR Karl Williams and returned 89-yards for another TD to put us up 14-0. San Diego would close the gap to 14-7 late in the 2nd quarter when QB Drew Brees hit WR Reche Caldwell for a 31-yd TD. The Bolts then took the second half kickoff 63-yds and K Nate Kaeding hit a 30-yd FG to pull within four. Not to be outdone, we came marching back with a 67-yd drive and K Neil Rackers hit a 36-yd FG to put us back up by a touchdown. QB Otis Hansen would throw an interception with 6:59 left in the 4th that San Diego converted into three points on a 27-yd Kaeding FG. That's as close as they would get. Final Score: Hawaiians 17, Chargers 13 Game MVP: HON DT Darnell Dockett - 6 tackles, 4 assists, 2.5 sacks Injuries: SS Adrian Wilson - Broken Finger (Probable: 1 Week) C Alex Stepanovich - Strained Elbow Tendon (Out: 4 Weeks) Offensive Leaders: Rushing: RB Marcel Shipp - 12 carries, 94 yds, 0 TDs Passing: QB Terrell Wickham - 11/11, 59 yds, 0 TDs, 0 INTs Receiving: WR Anquan Boldin - 5 rec., 36 yds, 0 TDs Defensive Leaders: LB Ronald McKinnon - 10 tackles, 1 assist DT Darnell Dockett - 6 tackles, 4 assists, 2.5 sacks DE Bert Berry - 2 tackles, 2 assists, 0.5 sack DT Erik McGee - 1 tackle, 1 sack Last edited by jshipman2 : 12-02-2004 at 05:20 PM. |

![]() ![]() 2004 Preseason Week 4: Oakland (1-1) @ Honolulu (1-1) Line: Oakland by 4 Preview: We continue to look forward to the start of the regular season. The running game really took off last game and we will look to get a strong showing from one of our undrafted rookie QBs. Result: A meager crowd of just 39,700 witnessed the best offensive showing of their new team thus far. Oakland took the opening possession and quickly drove down the field at will, getting a 10-yd run and a 58-yd run from RB Justin Fargas to setup a 6-yd TD pass from QB Kerry Collins to WR Doug Gabriel. K Sebastian Janikowski missed the extra point but the Raiders were up 6-0. Honolulu's first drive resulted in a punt and Oakland put together another nice drive, keyed by big runs and finished off with a 9-yd TD to Gabriel and again Janikowski missed the extra point. After the first quarter, the Raiders led 12-0. Oakland started the 2nd quarter with the ball again after another punt from the Hawaiians. Collins moved the team downfield with a 16-yd pass to WR Jerry Porter and a 12-yd pass to Gabriel. After a RB Tyrone Wheatley 9-yd run, Collins found Porter for a long strike TD of 39 yards. Trailing 19-0, Honolulu finally put together a drive with QB Terrell Wickham finding WR Larry Fitzgerald for two long passes to setup a K Neil Rackers 46-yd FG to cut the lead to 19-3. After trading punts on the next three possessions, the Hawaiians took possession after an Oakland punt and on the first play, Wickham found a seam and scrambled 64 yards for the score, making it 19-10. Oakland would answer before half with two big pass plays that setup a Collins to Porter 3-yd TD. The Hawaiians went to half down 26-10. The Hawaiians defense would prove to almost be the difference in the 2nd half. Wickham took the opening possession and hit WR Karl Williams for a 20 yard gain and then hit him for a 41-yard TD to cut the Raiders lead to 26-17. After holding Oakland on their next drive, the Hawaiians used a good mix of run and pass to move the ball down the field. The drive looked as though it had stalled but Honolulu faked a FG and RB Marcel Shipp was able to find a hole and pickup 6-yards for a first down to keep the drive alive. RB Troy Hambrick then broke off a 16-yd run and after a DEFENSIVE PASS INTERFERENCE penalty on Oakland put the ball on the OAK13, Hambrick plunged in from 2-yards out to pull the Hawaiians within two at 26-24. Both teams traded punts for the rest of the game until the final few minutes of the 4th quarter. The Raiders pinned the Hawaiians down on their own 5-yard line. Hambrick picked up 8-yards on a run around the left end and then Shipp added 5 more running off left tackle. QB Otis Hansen was then sacked by DT Ted Washington for a 3-yard loss and then got called for a DELAY OF GAME. Hansen then found Williams for 8-yards but the Hawaiians offensive line broke down again and DE Bobby Hamilton got to Hansen for a loss of six, bringing up 4th and 16 with 1:17 left in the game. Hansen would find FB Obafemi Ayanbadejo for 15-yards and the ball went over on downs. Oakland would try to give the Hawaiians another chance with QB Rich Gannon fumbling the ball (Oakland was able to recover) and Janikowski missing a 39-yd FG with :42 left. But Hansen's first pass would be intercepted by SS David Terrell at the 50 to seal the game. Final Score: Raiders 26, Hawaiians 24 Game MVP: OAK QB Kerry Collins - 24/33, 231 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INTs Injuries: DE Terry McElroy - Severe Headaches (Doubtful: 2 Weeks) C Alex Stepanovich - Strained Elbow Tendon (Out: 3 Weeks) TE Freddie Jones - Broken Ribs (Out: 4 Weeks) Offensive Leaders: Rushing: QB Terrell Wickham - 2 carries, 66 yds, 1 TD Passing: QB Otis Hansen - 13/19, 154 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT Receiving: WR Karl Williams - 4 rec., 84 yds, 1 TD Defensive Leaders: LB Ronald McKinnon - 10 tackles DE Calvin Pace - 5 tackles, 1 assist, 1 sack LB Leon Joe - 1 tackle, 1 assist, 1 forced fumble Last edited by jshipman2 : 12-07-2004 at 09:21 AM. |

![]() ![]() 2004 Preseason Week 5: Honolulu (1-2) @ Denver (0-4) Line: Denver by 12 Preview: Denver enters the final preseason week with an 0-4 record. But we are not going to look past this game because the Broncos are always good at home and a favored by 12 points. It will be nice to get this one out of the way and look forward to Week 1 of the regular season at St. Louis. Result: The game got off to a slow start with punts be traded for about half of the 1st quarter. On Denver's 2nd drive LB Ronald McKinnon stepped in front of a QB Jake Plummer pass and picked it off and returned it 18-yds for the first score of the game, putting Honolulu up 7-0. On the Broncos next drive, SS Ifeanyi Ohalete layed a vicious hit on RB Tatum Bell causing him to lose the ball and it would be recovered by CB Duane Starks. Honolulu QB Terrell Wickham then hit TE Reuben England for 19-yds. The Hawaiians then used a good mix of short passes and runs to setup a 54-yd FG from K Neil Rakers early in the 2nd quarter, increasing the lead to 10-0. Denver got a good kick return on the kickoff and had a short field to work with. Plummer made them pay, hitting WR Triandos Luke for a 35-yd TD, cutting the lead to 10-7. After a short drive resulted in a punt by Honolulu, Denver started a drive that would eventually stall out and K Jason Elam would miss a 39-yd FG. The Hawaiians got good field position after the missed Denver FG. RB Troy Hambrick found a hole for a 9-yd gain and Wickham hit TE Les Torres for 13-yds, setting up Rakers for another 54-yd FG with :23 left before halftime. Halftime score: Hawaiians 13, Denver 7 Denver would come out of halftime hot. Plummer hit TE Duane Carswell for 9-yds and then Luke caught a 28-yd pass from QB Danny Kanell that would be called back for holding. Kanell then hit WR Ashley Lelie for 11-yds but the drive stalled and Denver would send their punt team on the field. They faked the punt but got called for a false start and then were forced to punt. The next few drives by both teams resulted in three and outs. The Broncos put something together at the end of the 3rd quarter but again were forced to punt. Honolulu got called for being offsides and the 5-yds was enought to put Denver in FG range for Elam. Elam would hit a 55-yd FG to make the score 13-10. After a Honolulu punt to open the 4th quarter, Kanell gave the ball right back when he threw an interception to SS Adrian Wilson, that Wilson returned to the DEN30. Again the Hawaiians used a good assortment of short runs and passes to setup Rackers for a 28-yd FG, increasing the lead back to six. The Broncos drove right back with three big pass plays from Kanell to WR Rod Smith, FB Patrick Hape and Luke. But two straight plays resulted in dropped passes and Denver settled for a 39-yd FG from Elam. With time winding down in the 4th, Honolulu was forced to punt once again and Denver got the ball back with 2:46 left. A false start penalty backed them up and again the receivers got the case of the drops but an ILLEGAL CONTACT penalty on Honolulu gave Denver the 1st down. Kanell then hit RB Rueben Droughns for 14-yds, Luke for 14-yds and Bell had an 8-yd run taking the clock down to 1:05 and the Broncos had the ball on the HON26. The Broncos tried to give it away though, as Carswell fumbled with :34 left but was able to recover. Finally the Broncos lined up for the FG but was called for delay of game. It didn't matter though as Elam hit a 39-yd FG with :24 left to send it to a 16-16 tie. In overtime, Honolulu won the toss but after what looked like the start of a good drive they got called for UNSPORTSMAN LIKE CONDUCT and were forced to punt to Denver. First play, Kanell hit Hape for 35-yds. The Hawaiians defense came back and held but an ILLEGAL CONTACT penalty kept the drive alive for Denver with a 1st down. The Broncos would drive a little closer and Elam would hit his 3rd 39-yd FG of the game for the win. Final Score: Broncos 19, Hawaiians 16 Game MVP: DEN K Jason Elam - 4/5 FGs, 1/1 XPs, Long 55 Injuries: C Alex Stepanovich - Strained Elbow Tendon (Probable: 2 Weeks) DE Terry McElroy - Severe Headaches (Doubtful: 1 Week) TE Freddie Jones - Broken Ribs (Doubtful: 3 Weeks) DE Calvin Pace - Broken Clavicle (Out: 6 Weeks) DT Brock Edwards - Plantar Fasciitis (Out: 14 Weeks) Offensive Leaders: Rushing: RB Marcel Shipp - 15 carries, 61 yds, 0 TDs Passing: QB Terrell Wickham - 12/15, 79 yds, 0 TDs, 0 INTs Receiving: WR Larry Fitzgerald - 3 rec., 25 yds, 0 TDs Defensive Leaders: LB Ronald McKinnon - 6 tackles, 3 assists, 1 INT, 18 yds, 1 TD SS Adrian Wilson - 4 tackles, 2 assists, 1 INT, 10 yds, 0 TD |

![]() ![]() 2004 Regular Season Week 1: Honolulu (0-0) @ St. Louis (0-0) Line: St. Louis by 11 Preview: Week 1 finds us traveling to St. Louis for our first game of the season. St. Louis features two great running backs in Marshall Faulk and rookie Stephen Jackson. QB Marc Bulger is the leader of the offense and has Pro Bowl receivers Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce at his disposal. The Rams have a lot more talent on offense then we do but their defense is average at best, so we will see what happens. Result: This game was over almost as soon as it started. The Rams used 2 FGs from K Jeff Wilkins and a 51-yd TD pass from QB Marc Bulger to WR Torry Holt to lead at halftime. Halftime score: Rams 13, Hawaiians 0 The Hawaiians were only able to manage 2 FGs from K Neil Rackers in the 2nd half. St. Louis added a 9-yd TD from Bulger to Holt and a 4-yd RB Marshall Faulk TD run to win this one easily. Notes: The defense did a horrible job of stopping RB Corey Dillon the whole game. Dillon ended up with 128 yards rushing. They did clamp down in the 2nd half and hold New England to just the four K Adam Vinatieri FGs but with an anemic offense like ours, that's just too many points. Our offense turned the ball over four times in the game which is way to many. QB Terrell Wickham has yet to find his groove, as he has yet to throw a TD pass and has now thrown 6 INTs in his first two games. If RB Marcel Shipp doesn't start producing better numbers, look for RB Emmitt Smith to get more playing time. The big surprise of this game was the breakout performance of WR Karl Williams. With the injury to WR Anquan Boldin, Williams will need to step up big time. Thanks to a wonderful 4 INT day by QB Terrell Wickham, we have decided to replace him with QB Otis Hansen as the starting QB. RB Marcel Shipp will now move aside also to give more carries to RB Troy Hambrick. S Cory Hall had 4 INTs for Atlanta, which is just crazy. Injuries are really starting to mount. Game MVP: NO QB Aaron Brooks - 27/39, 293 yds, 3 TDs, 2 INTs; 15 carries, 47 yds, 1 TD Notes: This was without a doubt the best game we have played all season. We lead for much of the game but allowed a TD run to QB Aaron Brooks with 1:13 left in the 4th quarter that gave the Saints a 28-24 lead. But after a good kickoff return from WR Anquan Boldin, QB Terrell Wickham threw the ball deep on a hail mary and New Orleans got called for DEFENSIVE PASS INTERFERENCE at the New Orleans 1-yd line. That setup Wickham's 2nd TD pass of the game to WR Larry Fitzgerald giving us a 31-28 lead with :39 left to play. Brooks would complete two big passes in a row to setup K John Carney's 53-yd FG with :02 remaining to tie the game at 31-31 and send the game to overtime. The Saints got the ball first in overtime and marched to the HON43 yard line before he connected with WR Devery Henderson for a 43-yd TD but it got called back on a HOLDING penalty and we forced the Saints to punt. We quickly went 3 and out and were forced to punt ourselves. Brooks again drove New Orleans down the field at will and capped off the drive with a 5-yd TD pass to WR Joe Horn for the win. Even though we lost this one, it was truly the best this team has played so far. We decided not to bench Wickham yet and it really paid off. It was good to see him finally use his scrambling ability instead of staying in the pocket. Offensive Leaders Rushing: QB Terrell Wickham - 11 carries, 70 yds Passing: QB Terrell Wickham - 23/42, 241 yds, 2 TDs, 0 INTs ![]() Receiving: TE Freddie Jones - 6 rec., 66 yds Defensive Leaders LB Ronald McKinnon - 7 tackles, 2 assists LB Raynoch Thompson - 7 tackles, 2 assists, FF S Ifeanyi Ohalete - 6 tackles, 3 assists S Adrian Wilson - 6 tackles, 3 assists, 1 INT for 54 yds, 1 TD DE Bill Schwartz - 4 tackles, 1 sack LB Karlos Dansby - 4 tackles, FF DT Darnell Dockett - 2 tackles, 1 sack LB Steven Lucas - 2 tackles, 2 assists, 1 INT for 6 yds Injuries DE Calvin Pace - Broken Clavicle (Questionable: 2 Weeks) G Spencer Ross - Strained Triceps Muscle (Questionable: 3 Weeks) WR Karl Williams - Bruised Ribcage (Questionable: 4 Weeks) LB James Darling - Strained Triceps Muscle (Questionable: 4 Weeks) RB Marcel Shipp - Broken Thumb (Questionable: 5 Weeks) RB Emmitt Smith - Strained Deltoid Muscle (Out: 2 Weeks) DT Brock Edwards - Plantar Fasciitis (Out: 10 Weeks) P Robert Janssen - Severe Hamstring Pull (Out: 12 Weeks) |

Game MVP: HON DE Bert Berry - 4 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 FF Notes: This was another close one, except this time the outcome was a little different. We took a 7-3 lead in the 1st quarter after RB Kevin Barlow fumbled the ball and S Ifeanyi Ohalete picked up the ball and rumbled 38-yds for the TD. The 49ers would add a TD pass from QB Tim Rattay to TE Eric Johnson in the 3rd quarter and would sack QB Terrell Wickham in the endzone for a safety making the score 12-10 in the 4th quarter. Wickham took the team on his shoulders late in the 4th after starting at the SF48. He completed a 24-yd pass to WR Anquan Boldin and added a 10-yd scramble on the next play. After a few short runs, RB Troy Hambrick scored on a 4-yd TD to give us a 17-12 lead. With a 1:28 left in the game we had SF backed up on 3rd down and 28. But a DEFENSIVE PASS INTERFERENCE call gave them life and a first down at our 22. Rattay would throw and incomplete pass before being sacked by DE Bert Berry and DE Bill Schwartz on the very next play. Rattay lost the ball and Berry would recover to seal our FIRST WIN ![]() Offensive Leaders Rushing: RB Troy Hambrick - 23 carries, 63 yds, 1 TD Passing: QB Terrell Wickham - 14/27, 132 yds, 0 TDs, 1 INT Receiving: WR Anquan Boldin - 7 rec., 98 yds Defensive Leaders LB Raynoch Thompson - 9 tackles, 1 assist LB Ronald McKinnon - 6 tackles, 3 assists CB Nick Sawyer - 6 tackles, 1 assist DE Bert Berry - 4 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 FF DT Darnell Dockett - 3 tackles, 2 assists, 1.5 sacks CB David Macklin - 3 tackles, 1 INT for 6 yds DE Bill Schwartz - 2 tackles, 2 assists, 1 sack, FF S Jeff Brady - 4 tackles, 3 assists, FF Injuries CB Nick Sawyer - Broken Finger (Probable: 1 Week) DE Calvin Pace - Broken Clavicle (Probable: 1 Week) WR Karl Williams - Bruised Ribcage (Probable: 3 Weeks) RB Marcel Shipp - Broken Thumb (Probable: 4 Weeks) G Spencer Ross - Strained Triceps Muscle (Questionable: 2 Weeks) LB James Darling - Strained Triceps Muscle (Questionable: 3 Weeks) RB Emmitt Smith - Strained Deltoid Muscle (Out: 2 Weeks) DT Brock Edwards - Plantar Fasciitis (Out: IR) P Robert Janssen - Severe Hamstring Pull (Out: IR) |

Game MVP: BUF DE Chris Kelsay - 4 tackles, 3 sacks Notes: We turned this one into quite a game despite coming in as 11 points underdogs. Buffalo lead 13-6 with 2:33 left in the 4th quarter and we were putting together a nice drive. QB Terrell Wickham decided to go for the homerun and CB Troy Vincent picked it off (imagine that) in the endzone for a touchback. Our defense quickly made Buffalo go three and out to get the ball back with 1:44 left. Wickham put together some good passes but the offensive line allowed two sacks that really hurt us and we just didn't have enough time left to finish it off. Game MVP: HON QB Terrell Wickham - 25/37, 218 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT Notes: We used four K Neil Rackers FGs (25,35,39,47) and a TD pass from QB Terrell Wickham to WR Eugene Cabrera to beat the Dolphins. The Dolphins could never really get anything going on offense. RB Emmitt Smith continues to provide a good running attack, having gained at least 60 yards rushing over his last two games. The bad news is: injuries. LB Ronald McKinnon will miss the next 43 weeks with a compound leg fracture and DE Calvin Pace is out again with a wrist injury. Also, the flu bug has hit the team with ten players questionable. QB Kurt Warner was on fire and our defense couldn't stop the pass for anything. RB Ron Dayne had a good game filling in for an injured RB Tiki Barber, as he had 98 yards rushing. Front Office Decisions
After a poor showing our first season as the Honolulu Hawaiians, we feel a few changes need to be made. First as free agency approaches, we are looking at the QB position as a #1 priority (via draft or free agency). RB Emmitt Smith finally called it a career and announced his retirement, so we will also be looking for a quality RB. Despite a 4-12 record, head coach Butch Clodfelter he agreed to a 3-year / $3,110,000 contract extension. However, he will have new offensive and defensive coordinators as the team decided to go in a different direction. We signed offensive coordinator Tony Weller to a 3-year / $3,020,000 contract and defensive coordinator Buddy Meyer to a 3-year / $2,190,000 contract. It was hard to justify tying that much money up in one player but I think Matt is worth every penny we will be paying him. With the receivers he is surrounded by, he should thrieve in our system. QB Brian Griese - (53-53, 30) - 1 year / $1.47 million: We would have liked to have had QB Terrell Wickham back as the backup but the undrafted punk wanted starting quarterback money and just wasn't worth it. I was able to get Brian in late free agency for next to nothing, considering he could still be starting for most teams. Was willing to shell out the 1.47 million to have an insurance policy this good. QB Hardy Makredkakis - (4-35, 22) - 1 year / $240,000: Undrafted free agent, potential for good accuracy, avoiding interceptions & throwing the deep pass, has awesome current holding ability so will see time on special teams. RB Maurice Morris - (39-51, 25) - 1 year / $570,000: Would have liked to drafted a young stud RB in the draft but nothing was available. Wasn't much on the free agency market either, so we decided to gamble on Morris. If he can provide us with 1,000 yards rushing and a hand full of TDs, I will be happy. RB Grady Hoffman - (17-27, 21) - 1 year / $240,000: Undrafted free agent, great elusiveness and speed to the outside, should break some big gains when he sees playing time. FB Obafemi Ayanbadejo - (42-43, 30) - 3 years / $2,110,000: Resigned to be the starting fullback but will take a backup role after we drafted a young FB, last season he rushed for 101 yards on 18 carries and had 1 TD, caught 22 passes for 142 yards. TE Freddie Jones - (56-56, 30) - 4 years / $9,760,000: Resigned at the end of the '04 season, caught 19 passes for 173 yards in just 10 games due to injury, probably resigned for too much since TE isn't a big part of our offense but with Hasselbeck on board could really blossom plus with the skills he has at run & pass blocking didn't want to let him get away, great at third down catching and avoiding drops. TE Les Torres - (22-48, 22) - 2 years / $900,000: Resigned to backup starting TE Freddie Jones, saw action in all 16 games last season (started five in place of injured Jones), had 10 catches for 93 yards, potential to be great at run blocking and route running. WR Brady Small - (12-25, 22) - 1 year / $240,000: Undrafted free agent, signed primarly to be a kickoff/punt returner. G Kris Dielman - (8-33, 24) - 1 year / $400,000: Played for San Diego in '04, signed to be a starter on a sad offensive line, best option available after training camp but could become a decent backup if he can reach his potential in run and pass blocking. G Andrew Hayes - (6-27, 22) - 1 year / $330,000: Undrafted free agent, signed to be a backup guard, has decent potential at pass blocking, not a strong upside. G Peter Kido - (11-34, 23) - 1 year / $240,000: Undrafted free agent, signed to be a backup but might me thrust into starting role if guard taken in 5th round doesn't sign, has potential to be a very good run blocker. T Todd Fordham - (40-53, 31) - 1 year / $1,150,000: Played for Carolina in '04 in a reserve role, signed to become a starter, has no blocking strength but has awesome potential at run blocking and is an average pass blocker. P Everett Michels - (42-55, 22) - 1 year / $330,000: Originally signed in '04 as an undrafted free agent, wasn't going to be retained after taking a punter in the draft but after cutting the rookie punter Michels was resigned, had a good rookie year with an net average of 40.3 yards and put 30 inside the 20 in just 14 games played; has very good hang time and the potential to be one of the best at directional punting. DE J.B. Barrett - (11-35, 23) - 1 year / $240,000: Undrafted free agent, signed to backup DE Calvin Pace, has great potential at pass rushing technique but is below average at everything else. DE Jesse Sexton - (8-37, 21) - 1 year / $240,000: Undrafted free agent, signed to backup DE Bert Berry, has great potential at run defense and pass rushing technique, could develop into a quality backup. DT Rico Stoyanovich - (29-54, 23) - 2 years / $810,000: Originally signed as an undrafted free agent, now looks like he could develop into a starter or a quality reserve, ratings are good (right around the middle on everything), recorded 19 tackles and 10 assists in 15 games in '04. DT Terrell Swanger - (18-43, 24) - 1 year / $240,000: Undrafted free agent; signed to backup Stoyanovich; he is a punishing hitter with great potential at run defense; could develop into a quality backup. DT Jake Curtis - (5-33, 23) - 1 year / $330,000: Undrafted free agent; signed to backup DT Darnell Dockett; decent potential but will probably never make it in the NFL. LB Ronald McKinnon - (61-63, 31) - 3 years / $7,980,000: Resigned at the end of '04 despite a season ending injury that will keep him out until late in the '05 season, recorded 40 tackles and 14 assists with 2 sacks through six games and would have broke 100 tackles if he hadn't been injured; a punishing hitter that is great at defending the run & has great pass rush strength; can play great bump and run defense. S Jeff Brady - (20-41, 21) - 3 years / $1,240,000: Originally signed as an undrafted free agent; started at free safety and played good enough that we feel in love with him; didn't record in interceptions in his rookie season but had 58 tackles and 24 assists; has decent potential and will serve as a backup to this years #1 pick (if he ends his holdout). S Adrian Wilson - (41-45, 25) - 3 years / $1,800,000: wasn't going to be retained after wanting way to much money; no offers were made to him during free agency and was resigned after training camp at a cheap price; appeared in all sixteen games in '04 (starting three); record 2 interceptions for 54 yards and 1 TD; added 36 tackles and 11 assists; not good at run defense or man-to-man but is great at bump and run and zone; a punishing hitter. Rookie Draft 1st Round (3) : S Tito Viera - Mesa State - (34-82, 25) - drafted in the 1st round with the #3 overall pick to provide stability to a pass defense ranked 29th in '04; still unsigned heading into preseason but are hopeful; looks to have all the makings of a future Hall of Famer. 2nd Round (3) : S Dan Voigt - Florida - (27-55, 23) - signed to a 5 year / $5,500,000 contract; has great potential at zone defense and is above average at everything else; with five safeties going to preseason he will need to earn his spot on this team. 3rd Round (3) : CB Clarence Pearson - Arkansas - (21-49, 23) - agreed to a 4 years / $2,870,000 contract; no good at bump and run defense and average at man-to-man but has great potential at everything else; if he doesn't challenge for a starting position I will be surprised. 4th Round (3) : FB Jumbo Kennicott - Florida - (44-68, 24) - signed to a 4 year / $2,470,000 contract; lacks third down running ability and avoiding fumbles but looks to have great potential at everything else; already has great blocking strength and power inside. 5th Round (3) : G Jay Mays - Bowie State - (7-42, 23) - still unsigned heading into preseason but are hopeful; looks to have great potential at both run & pass blocking; lacks blocking strength; could become a solid backup. 6th Round (3) : P Chester Levesque - Indiana - (35-56, 23) - signed to a 3 year / $1,290,000 contract; turned out to be average at best and after deciding to resign P Everett Michels was released. 7th Round (3) : CB Billy Petit - Pittsburgh - (14-35, 21) - signed to a 3 year / $1,210,000 contract; scouts really overrated him and is uncertain if he will make the team at all.
