ESPN is reporting this now. A shame.

I never like the guy since he was always tearing throught the Cowboys o-line, but I always respected him and his talent.

RIP, MoD

I am a huge Reggie White fan.... he was one of the most devastating lineman to ever play football. What a shame he dies so early....

Man...don't know what to say. It's funny, just last night his comeback with Carolina popped into my head and I tried to quick calculate how long ago he started in the USFL. Sad, sad. A definite Philly favorite. One of the all-time greats.

Well, here's hoping Reggie is hanging out with Jerome and doing some catching up...

When I turned on ESPN after waking up this morning (just before 11:30), this is what they were talking about. I had thought that maybe this happened last night, and they had just brought it up. Now after seeing this post I realize that I turned it on just in time for the announcement.

Golic was choked up and couldn't make it through his part, and they needed to come back to him. Jaws looked very shaken as well.

So I go over to ESPN.com to see what they've got in the way of details, and find another football death also linked there:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1953393
TAMPA, Fla. -- Vanderbilt running back Kwane Doster was shot to death early Sunday when someone fired at the parked car he was in, police said.

Doster, 21, of Tampa, died at Tampa General Hospital after being shot near the Ybor City nightlife district, police spokesman Joe Durkin said. Detectives were trying to find the killer and determine a motive.

Doster and two friends had stopped their car while "cruising around" when another car pulled up beside them, Durkin said. Several shots were fired at Doster's car, and one hit him in the chest while he was sitting behind the driver. No one else was hurt.

"I don't believe any words were exchanged," Durkin said, adding that investigators didn't know whether Doster was the intended target.

Police believe three people were in the other car.

A message left for a Vanderbilt spokesman Sunday was not immediately returned.

Doster ran for 437 yards and one touchdown this season for the Commodores (2-9). For his career, the junior running back had 1,621 yards rushing, 256 yards receiving and seven touchdowns.

Is ESPN still reporting massive heart attack? The article I read said he died of respiratory failure from sleep apnea. What a strange way to go (if true).

I always admired those Philly D's, and I rooted for the Pack when they were going to Super Bowls, so I remember Reggie White fondly.

He did say some God-awful stupid things at times, though. But none of us are flawless.

RIP Reggie.

Happy holidays to you too. Just keep your mouth shut next time if you don't have anything postive to this sort of "tribute" thread.

Even he later admitted that it was the dumbest thing that he ever did. I guess we can't ever make mistakes. Great football player, and even a better human being.

That is terrible to hear. If I remember correctly, he was a pretty good special teams player as well.

Very sad. The best DE, and possibly defender, I have seen. A player you never wanted your team playing against. Did his comeback for Carolina cost him receiving his HOF induction 'til now?

Sleep Apnea is quite the killer. Anyone who is overweight is at risk as the fat around the neck muscles falls in and obstructs the airway. This causes cardiac arrhytmias (sp?) which can be lethal. I'm hearing this is what killed Reggie. In any case, his loss is very sad

Yes. I believe he won't be eligible until 2006. If he hadn't returned, he would have been eligble for this past class.

What is considered ''overweight''. Am also wondering how many people died annually from sleep apnea.

Sounds about right. The reason I posted my statement in part is that I'm sure I'm not the only overweight guy on this board. I get checked for sleep apnea every 2 or 3 years. It might be worth asking your primary care doctor about if you are overweight and have any of the warning signs (I've always been a loud snorer.)

the results? yeah all those Superbowls are had to argue....oh wait.

ok, maybe a bad place to joke. but you raise a questions I had, and this is if the Packers would retire his number. Sure he was not there as long, but everyone in the orginization over the last 15 years give hom a ton of credit towards bringing the franchise back to life.

One of the articles I read today said that Mike Sherman and someone else in management had talked about retiring his number at next year's home opener ... and this was before he died.

John Candy went down to Sleep Apnea as well.

I actually had the surgery several years ago. I was then and am now roughly 5'10" and 245 lbs. When I had my sleep study they determined I had an average of 72 major episodes an hour. The average duration of those "major" episodes was 45 seconds. My Blood Oxygen level dropped as low as 52% the night they did my home study.

My doctor evaluated the results, and called me immediately back to his office. He had a respiratory therapist meet me there to set up a C-Pap machine for me right then and there. He essentially told me I was incredibly lucky to be alive. Since the surgery I still have apneas, but they are very short duration, and not near as dramatic with the gasping and such.

I will never forget the first night I used the C-PAP machine. I woke up the next morning, and was lying in EXACTLY the same position I had started the night in. It was the best night of sleep I had had in years.
