Coaching: No coaches decided to retire, nor were they lured away. This is at once a blessing, and a curse. Since we are not a top team, not many coaches are amenable to come to Ft. Worth as of yet. All coaching contracts were up for review, but the overall dismal application group forced the roll-over for all coaches except one. Our new Syndicate Coordinator is:

Freshmen Roundup: 2005
TCU is proud to introduce the newest Fightin' Horned Frogs. As Coach Purple is fond of saying, "I hate freshman. You stake your life, your career, on a bunch of 18 year old kids, and if they suck, well, you're SCREWED." Coach Purple has said he plans on redshirting the entire class except a TE, depending on future injuries. The newcomers are, in order of their signings:
As Coach Purple perused the ratings for his latest freshman class, he let out a sigh and decided he needed to lighten up a bit. Whereas he, like any other coach, would like to see freshman like Graham Elliot everywhere he looked, Coach Purple realizes you can't tell what you have for a year or two anyway. "I guess I am a bit dissapointed, but we are working with a less than stellar scout when it comes to certain positions. I guess Ike Palmer may be the QB we hoped when we recruited him, but it won't matter until next year what his ratings or abilities are since he won't be playing until then, anyway. We'll just do the finger-crossing thing, and see what 'develops,' pun, poor as it is, intended."

Texas Christian Projected Starters: 2005
The upgrade at most positions is very good, especially the offensive line. G Cornelius Bishop made an incredible leap from last year, and RB Graham Elliot's estimate is 19 points higher. It's a shame he is maxed, but maybe the estimate will prove false since he has 2 more years. This is an incredibly young team, with only 2 seniors on the starting squad, and only 2 more who are non-redshirt juniors. Unfortunately, most of our decent back-ups are redshirting freshmen, so injuries could be a problem. Our offensive coordinator is excellent at injury prevention, though, so at least on that side of the ball, and for Elliot's sake, injuries should again be minimal. One other note. QB is, again, a sore spot. Freshman QB Ike Palmer actually has a higher current estimate (29) right now than does the starter, Joey Hidy (27). However, Coach Purple believes the year of training and learning will help a great deal, so redshirt it is. With the low scout level at QB currently for Deep South, a year may not raise Palmer's estimate, but that is the choice we have made.

Recruiting Outlook: 2005
Unlike previous years, we are now getting to the point where we have some good players at most every position. We can be a bit more selective and specialized in the recruits we look for and the size or Athletic Preparation we reach for. Also, with our now 75 Prestige, there are no more "black" recruits who do not even know how to spell TCU (except those whose major we do not offer). That being said, we have only 13 spots open to recruit, so that makes each player a bit more important than before. Next year, we should be OK, but the next year we will be short by many scholarships again, so hitting on as many as possible this year is imperative. We must upgrade the defense, which has given up over 20 points a game every year so far.

Schedule and Predictions: 2005
Schedule:
History:
Predictions: "I feel with the schedule we have and the improvement from last year we could have a really great year," said Coach Purple at the 1st Frog Club meeting of the year. "From a quick glance of the opponents we have, there are 5 games you would put in the win column immediately from teams ranked in the 100's. "Ohio State looks like a toss-up, but we have scouted them extensively and we know they have little offense to speak of. Their starter at QB is rated 17. Their top RB and their top OL are both out due to academics. We feel we can shut them down somewhat with the improved defense we have, and though their defense is good, we think we can score enough to beat them." Coach Purple said Memphis is probably too good at this point, but don't tell our players that. Southern Mississippi may be too good as well, but they are not in Memphis' league, either. We catch a break by not playing Cincinnati this year, one of 3 teams in C-USA rated above us. Coach says we should beat Louisville, so the key to the year is Tulane. Beat them and we could be 9-2 and assured a bowl invitation. Lose and S. Miss may take the second C-USA spot. Coach's prediction for 2005 is...8-3. Bowl game is a hope, but not a given. With a little luck, we could go 9-2 and not be totally surprised.

WEEK 1
The Game:
A 27 yard punt return by CB Marty Dotson got the Frogs stared at the Ohio State 21, and RB Graham Elliot took it in from 6 to tie the score. After another Buckeye punt, TCU went 48 yards to take the lead on a 20 yard Joey Hidy to WR Ellis Twisp td pass. Frogs were up, 14-7 after the 1st. After a Buckeye fg cut the lead to 4, QB Hidy threw an interception and Ohio State took advantage, moving 82 yards in 9 plays to take the lead. With 15 seconds left in the half, K Vincent Boo tied it up with a fg made possible by a 53 yard Hidy to WR Gino Pauly strike. 17-17 at half. The Frogs took the 2nd half kickoff 80 yards in 12 plays, capped by another Elliot scamper, this from 8 yards out. After several punts in the 3rd quarter, QB Hidy was sacked at the TCU 32 yard line and fumbled, Buckeye recovery. 4 plays later, State tied the game 24-24. With 7 minutes left, OLB Ethan McCareins intercepted at the Frog 6 yard line. Then, with time running out, Ohio State drove deep into Toad territory at the 18, but a running play did not stop the clock, and TCU squirreled out for a second time. In overtime, the Buckeyes inexplicably ran three straight times, netting 8 yards, and kicked a field goal to take a 27-24 lead. TCU got their chance and seemed to make better plays as Elliot ran 3 times for 12 yards. On first down, the Frogs switched-up on the Buckeyes and QB Hidy found WR Ellis Twisp on a 13 yard td strike for an overtime thriller of a win. Coach Purple said "We did not really deserve this victory, but we aren't giving it back, either. We are a young team, and apparently not as good on defense as we had hoped, but that is no excuse. Neither is playing before 81k+ fans. If we want to succeed, we better learn quickly." Final Score: TCU 30 Ohio State 27 (OT) Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 29 carries for 155 yards, 2 td DT Dusty Aceves 5 Tck 3 Ast 2 Sck Injuries were confined to: none Year to Date:
Recruiting: New recruits we are looking at:
I know this looks absurd, going after all these top recruits, hanging the future of the Frogs on the supposition that we, who are ranked a meager 55th, could hope to lure these guys to Ft. Worth. However, it may not be that crazy. To wit, 6 of the 12 are from Texas; only one is below 87 for their fit score; only one does not emphasize Academics, and he has Distance as his first emphasis and he's from Texas. The only school with a higher prestige than TCU in the state is UTEP. So it may appear foolhardy, but rest assured if we get even half of them, that would be remarkable. And, yes, we do/will have back-up players on our list. The main problem is that this is a HORRIBLE year as far as Academics goes, so we must try to get what we can, and these guys are it for now.

WEEK 2
The Game:
For the 2nd time in two games this year, the drive after the opening kickoff was taken all the way for a score, this time by the Frogs. A 69 yard march was highlighted by RB Graham Elliot, who accounted for 65 of the yards on the drive. WR Ellis Twisp took it in from the 4 on a reverse. The Beavers were never in the game, despite QB Joey Hidy having a horrific day, completing but 5 of 17 for 93 yards and a pick. For once, the defense ruled the day, collecting the first shutout in Coach Purple's tenure and holding Oregon State to 222 total yards. The Toads had 3 interceptions on the day, and CB Roy Martinez blocked a late 4th quarter punt which was returned by ILB Ben Spillman for a score. Coach Purple said, "That is more like it. We want to DOMINATE teams that we should dominate, not give up 350 yards of offense to every team we play. Well done all around." Final Score: TCU 38 Oregon State 0 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 36 carries for 239 yards, 3 td S Rondell Riekens 2 Tck 1 Ast 3 Int Injuries were confined to:none Year to Date:
Recruiting: Bad news already on the recruit trail, as 3 of our hoped for Horned Frog recruits are already visiting schools we don't think we can compete for them with. We must switch tracks to our back-ups now so as not to be caught in a bind. We still have offers out, but will pull them in a few weeks if no new developments occur in a positive vein. The 3 are:

WEEK 3: NO GAME
Standings: NEXT WEEK Recruiting: This week we made sure our top group each had a phone call and a visit, then we made some inquiries as to some back-up recruits for some of the more unlikely players we have targeted. We have no visiting players as of yet, nor are there any other recruits visiting schools to report on.

Myron Buckner, a WR from TX, is the #4 recruit and the #1 WR in the country. TCU is his only visit so far. As for the rest of the week, we contacted a number of alternate players in case we start losing recruits. We still have only 12 scholarship offers on the table, but that will change as we start losing young men to other schools in the coming weeks.

WEEK 5
The Game:
East Carolina seemed to have a lack of interest, as well. The Pirates had but 12 first downs and 157 total yards. They had only 22 minutes of possession, threw 3 interceptions and punted for a 30.8 average while forcing TCU into but 1 punt the entire afternoon. With this information, you might think the score would be 80-0. However, TCU was in a very generous mood. The Frogs delivered unto E. Carolina 17 penalties and QB Hidy needs to run and hidy as he threw SIX interceptions. Two of these were returned for Pirate touchdowns, accounting for 14 of E. Carolina's 17 points on the day. Coach Purple was not amused. "Take away Elliot's player off the week and we could have been beaten because of inept play and poor preparation. A coaching meeting needs to be held or Memphis will tan our ass next week." Final Score: TCU 37 East Carolina 17 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 42 carries for 292 yards, 1 td **National Offensive Player of the Week** DE Riddick Ackerman 5 Tck 1 Ast 3 Sck OG Cornelius Bishop 5-19 Block 0 SkA Injuries were confined to:none Year to Date:
Recruiting: Not a good week on the recruiting trail. We do have our second player visiting, and it is DE Gilbert Herek, who we sort of gave up on a few weeks ago. Now we will hope we land him, because our top group seems to be abandoning TCU quickly. C Freddie Burnett, T Marco Gardner, DT Carlos Surtain, OLB Andre Ames and CB Al Caudle have all lined up at least one visit to other schools and not Cowtown. That means our search is widening and if we cannot find good replacements, we may not offer but 10 scholarships and hoard the rest for 2007, when we could be 6 or more short of a full compliment.

Worth last week and a running back who may replace Graham Elliot in a few years if we are lucky. We now have 10 visiting recruits, including all remaining players we had addressed as priority choices at the start of the year. We still are hoping for a G,T,OLB,ILB,CB,S to round out the 10 scholarships we had hoped to hand-out this year. After that, we will try to get some decent walk-on help at several undermanned positions, and maybe a K just in case. In The Fold:

WEEK 9
The Game:
The game saw 5 missed field goals, 3 by usually reliable Frog K Vincent Boo from 23, 39 and 39 again. TCU had 11 penalties to nullify any good offensive drives they may have had. This was not a well played game, but Coach Purple wasn't too upset. "A win is a win, and it's our first over Tulane since I came to TCU. We'll take any win and be proud, if not very pleased." Final Score: TCU 7 Tulane 3 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 28 carries for 152 yards, 1 td OLB Ethan McCareins 6 Tck 3 Ast 2 Int QB Joey Hidy 11 of 14 for 131 yards 0 Td 0 Int Injuries were confined to: Ackerman RECOVERED OLB Ethan McCareins PROBABLE-1 Sprained Ankle TE Gary Boone DOUBTFUL-4 Pulled Groin Year to Date:
Recruiting: WR Myron Buckner has accepted a scholarship offer to attend TCU. We are very excited to have him. Unfortunately, 3 other players accepted offers from other schools, though none of them were on our top hope list. We now have only 8 recruits visiting our campus. We are looking at QB Vinny Madison, #9 recruit in the nation, from NC. Coach Purple knows we have a QB already, but Madison in a 70 AthPrep, 82+ scouted prospect. It is hard to pass that up if the chance is there to land him. As you know, QB has been a bane to the Frogs throughout Coach Purple's tenure in Ft. Worth. The more prospects we bring in, the better our chances to end-up with a keeper. None of the players we have at QB ended-up what we expected, so we'll take a flyer on another one. In The Fold:

The Game:
QB Joey Hidy had one of his better days to compliment RB Graham Elliot's rushing and receiving. Elliot had 167 yards on the ground, but also had 7 receptions for 72 yards and another score. K Vincent Boo missed another field goal, which is very distressing for the tight games that could occur down the line. The defense also came up with 5 sacks on the day. Final Score: TCU 44 S. They are ILB Brent Houghtlin, OLB Gino Sanford and S Dale Burgower. We have back-up players waiting, but they are not in the same zipcode as those we want. In The Fold:

WEEK 11
The Game:
As for the game, it was crazy and the biggest squirrel-job ever. RB Graham Elliot started TCU out well with a 12 yard 1st quarter td run for a 7-3 lead. There were 4 missed field goals in the 1st half, 3 of them by UAB K Deon Penrod. Those misses, and other screw-ups by the Blazers, would prove costly in their effort to take the series lead. QB Joey Hidy threw 3 interceptions on 3 consecutive drives in the 3rd quarter, one leading to UAB taking the lead, 10-7. TCU retook the lead, 14-10, on a 26 second, 2 play drive capped by a 35 yard td reception by WR Gino Pauly. That ended a wild 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter was even wilder. After trading field goals for a 17-13 Frog lead, TCU kicked-off and the Blazers were forced to start on their 1 yard line following a penalty. On the first play, UAB QB Miller completed a pass to WR Connell for 99 yards and a touchdown with 1:17 left in the game. Blazers 20 Frogs 17. QB Hidy then threw his 4th interception of the game and UAB had the lead and the ball with 0:53 left in the game. However, on 2nd down following a Frog timeout, the Blazers fumbled the ball and Ethan McCareins recovered at the Blazer 26 yard line. Following two Elliot runs and two TCU timeouts, K Vincent Boo kicked a 37 yard field goal with 0:17 seconds to send the game into OT. In OT, Boo kicked another field goal for the Toads and, following 2 incompletions and a sack by DT Dusty Aceves, UAB K Penrod missed from 40 yards and TCU was victorious. Final Score: TCU 23 UAB 20 (OT) Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 30 carries for 257 yards, 1 td Injuries were confined to: DE Ackerman RECOVERED Year to Date:
Recruiting: We had no commitments this week and we lost one of the 3 remaining players we wanted. ILB Brent Houghtlin, #8 national recruit has chosen to sign with Oregon. That leaves us with 2 players to focus on, plus the 2nd QB we wouldn't mind getting to commit. They are the only 3 visiting players. We are now scouring the lists to find the best walk-on candidates we can since we will be taking 5 or 6 of them, depending on the next few weeks. In The Fold:

WEEK 13: We Are the Champions
The Game:
What did matter was that Cincinnati somehow managed to lose to East Carolina, giving TCU its first C-USA championship under Coach Purple. The Frogs smothered Louisville, giving up only 11 yards rushing. QB Joey Hidy did throw 2 more interceptions, but RB Graham Elliot ran for 200 yards and the many penalties didn't hurt the cause. The defense registered 6 sacks and picked-off 3 Cardinal passes to make this a great day in the rain. The Skillet game vs. SMU next week will end a great campaign as TCU awaits the bowl pairings. Final Score: TCU 34 Louisville 10 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 31 carries for 200 Yds, 3 Td ILB Hardy Singleton 9 Tck 2 Ast 2 Sck 3 Defn Injuries were confined to: TE Boone RECOVERED ILB Bates RECOVERED Year to Date:
Recruiting: The Horned Frogs received the expected acceptance from OLB Gino Sanford this week, ending the suspense of this year's recruiting. QB Vinny Madison is the only player left visiting Ft. Worth, but since we already have a recruit at QB, it isn't imperative that he come to TCU. We have been scouring the services to find decent walk-on candidates for next year. We have 25 to chose from so far, and we will be weeding them out as the next few weeks go by to get down to the 5 or 6 that will be coming to TCU. In The Fold:

The Game:

The game was tight until the end as the Ponies overtook the Toads in the fourth quarter and, with 6:21 to go in the game, they led 31-30. Frog QB Joey Hidy, however, would not let the Frogs lose on this day. Hidy had his best game of the year with 3 touchdown strikes and no interceptions. With 2:00 minutes to go, RB Graham Elliot ran it in from the 1 yard line on a 55 yard drive orchestrated by Hidy's short, crisp passing. Smu could not sustain a drive after the ensuing kickoff and TCU had a 10 win season at the expense of their hated rival. Now TCU awaits their bowl opponent. Final Score: TCU 37 SMU 31 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 31 carries for 195 Yds, 2 Td QB Joey Hidy 18 of 25 for 284 Yds, 3 TD 0 Int Injuries were confined to: CB Carmazzi RECOVERED WR Gino Pauly PROBABLE-6, Broken Hand OLB Ethan McCareins PROBABLE-1, Bad Cold Year to Date:
Recruiting: The Horned Frogs closed out the recruiting season with another top recruit. QB Vinny Madison chose TCU. Whether he was thrilled about it or not is the question. For some reason, all the other schools he was visiting retracted their offer, much like OLB Gino Sanford. We don't pretend to understand, but we are thrilled, nonetheless, as Madison is the #1 ranked QB in the nation. Now we await the walk-on parade for week 16. In The Fold:

If anyone looks at this, you may notice a bit of a lack of effort in the game reports lately. I get tired of writing longer reports to myself sometimes, as evidenced by the curtailment of the "National Anthem" feature that may or may not have been amusing.
I will write better reports when I feel like it or if a game is particulary interesting to me. More later.

2005 Seattle Bowl
The Game
Following an exchange of punts to start the game, Miami drove 85 yards in 9 plays to take a 7-0 lead at the end of 1 quarter. At this point, TCU took control momentarily, driving 80 yards in 10 plays and tying the score on a RB Graham Elliot 8 yard run. On the ensuing drive for the 'Canes, S Rondell Riekens intercepted a pass and returned the ball 41 yards, all the way to the Miami 3 yard line. QB Joey Hidy hit Elliot for a 3 yard td on 1st down, and things looked good for the Frogs. Unfortunately, the good fortune did not last long, as Miami tied the score on the ensuing drive, which was set-up by a fine kickoff return. Miami missed a field goal with 1 second left in the half, and we were all knotted-up at 14-14. The 2nd half began well as TCU drove 65 yards in 14 plays, but K Vincent Boo missed a try for 3- points, and Miami seized the opportunity. The 'Canes proceeded to march down for a field goal of their own to take the lead, 17-14, and when QB Hidy threw an interception on the next possession for the Frogs, Miami took control of the game, driving 58 yards in 10 plays to take a 24-14 lead. That proved to be the end of the scoring as K Boo missed yet another FG and QB Hidy threw yet another interception to thwart any Toad hopes of a comeback. While the game was close, Coach Purple lamented the inability ,once again, of his team to shut down another conferences' weak sister in a bowl game. "Now you know why I haven't felt I can schedule a top team for one of our games. It is like losing to Memphis. We can win and win, but when we play a ranked team, we still do not compete well." Final Score: Miami 24 TCU 14 Players of the Week: Congratulations RB Graham Elliot 28 carries for 116 yards, 1 td WR Ellis Twisp 6 receptions for 98 yards, 0 Td OLB Ethan McCareins 11 Tck 1 Ast 1 Sck Injuries were confined to: end of season Year to Date:

Recruiting Final: 2005
How can we not be excited to have these players coming to Cowtown next year. Not only are they highly rated but they are a very intelligent group as well. Also, they are fairly well prepared to come in and help, especially after a year of work and study. Due to the high # of penalties, Coach Purple has stated he plans to increase the time spent in practice for next year, so it will help the team get better if we do not need to use too mush time on academics. Even the walk-on players have the ability, overall, to be decent back-ups in case of injury in a few years. We obviously were very lucky that the number of academic and Texas players worked for us with the small number of recruits we could go after. We didn't need to extend ourselves with lots of contacts, so each player we looked at fit TCU quite well. It could be a good idea to recruit fewer players than 16 most every year so we can use our resources more wisely. We still have a small budget, so visiting players outside Texas is still problematic. We must use what we have with care if we are to continue our improvement.

Heisman Victory for a Frog
In a stunning vote, TCU RB Graham Elliot was awarded the Heisman Trophy as the top player in college football. Elliot, a redshirt junior, garnered 130 votes to edge Arizona RB Phil Branch, who received 124 votes. Temple QB Anthony Sprotte, who won the award last year, was 4th. The shock was due to the fact that Branch broke Elliot's year old all-purpose yards in a season mark and was the leading rusher in the nation, ahead of Elliot, who was second. Congratulations to Horned Frog Graham Elliot
