FOFC Track Championship Series:Daytona

The season of TCS racing will start soon. We will be racing at Daytona (Night) in the Pepsi 400. In the first part of the series, which ended up being a test series, Eric Anderson led the points for most of the races. Will what he learned carry over to the series or were the other drivers just holding back? We'll find out soon.

Jim Bender driving the #1 Pittsburgh Steelers car started off the day in 7th place. But early on he fell backwards and was involved in a wreck with B. Cole. Things didn't look good as some damage was visible on the back of the car. But amazingly, Bender brought himself back to the front and after taking the white flag in 4th, moved himself up quickly and took over the lead from Kai Collins to win the first race of the series.

89 lead changes were scattered throughout the 160 lap race. 31 drivers out of 42 led a lap in the race. The most belonged to Ray Zerback who led 31. Polesitter Craptacular led 4 laps and finished 25th 1 lap down. 9 caution flags flew. All for relatively minor incidents. Curtis Parsons, S. Silvers and Al Kaholic were the only drivers who didn't finish.

A major wreck on lap 46 took out 7 cars and damaged many more set the tone for the rest of the day. The damaged cars from this accident caused havoc the rest of the day and caused only 7 cars to finish on the lead lap. Sonny Daze took advantage and led the final 34 laps to win easily. 19 drivers led laps on 70 lead changes. 15 cars in all were knocked out the race.

A late caution set up a greta finish between 4 cars. Benny Rudd in the #27, Al Kaholic in the #69, Joe Hamilton in the #16 and Crpatacular in the #7. At the start of the last lap, Kaholic held a slight advantage, but Rudd passed him heading down the backstretch and held him off for the win. Kaholic led the most laps with 41.

95 lead changes among 17 drivers took place. Only five cautions but numerous cars were taken out. 17 cars did not finish. Polesitter #5 Lemke finished 26th, 8 laps down.

For about 50 laps, Al Kaholic and Eric Anderson dominated the race. No one could touch either of those two. But on lap 113, Anderson clipped a lapped car and was knocked out the race.

I might try and get a race or two in tomorrow. Look for at least one.

M. Tokunaga in the #44 car thought he was going to have to settle for a top 5 finish. With 8 laps to go, the top 4 had pulled away from him and looked to be heading for a battle at the end between those four. But, a caution on lap 153 gave Tokunaga life again. After the restart Tokunaga quickly moved up and took over the lead on the backstretch of lap 159. IB Long, Fields, and Jim Bender all took shots at Tokunaga on the final lap but did not suceed.

79 lead changes were scattered throughout the race involving 21 drivers. IB Long led the most with 44. A major accident on lap 106 took out 7 cars and gave heavy damage to others. The yellow flew 11 times.

I like this season better already. Cole has moved up from 30-something to 18th overall.

It appears he has a qualifying problem as he almost always start at the back.

This was easily the most exciting race yet. The lead changed constantly, 120 times to be exact. Only 1 caution for a minor incident involving #44 Tokunaga and #30 Cole. With only 5 laps left, drivers had to make pit stops to get a splash of fuel. Shane Kormelink and T. Hudson's teams made the quickest stops. The two got out ahead of everyone else and battled for the final 4 laps with Kormelink barely edging out Hudson at the line.

#33 B Nowell led the most laps with 23. Polesitter #87 J. Jefferson led 6 laps and finished 3rd. Points leader Jim Bender lost the draft at one point in the race and ended up going a lap down. He had a very strong car but could never regain that lap and finished 34th.

Another terrific race. 112 lead changes among 25 drivers. Craptacular in the #7 car took the pole for this one. As the laps wound down, no one could tell who would win. And then a caution on lap 152 of 160 bunched the field back up. 8 cars seperated themselves from the rest. Craptacular took the white flag in 3rd. And positioned himself in the perfect spot heading into turn 3. He dropped below C. Richard going into 3 and took the spot, and then held off Richard and Nick Phillips to take the checkered.

2 cautions flew. One which knocked both Al Kaholic and T. Elkin. Chris Snow led the most laps with 23.

Another very exciting race in the TCS series. 119 lead changes among 21 drivers. This one was won by Curtis Parsons under caution. Parsons and IB Long both led 21 laps to lead the most.

Polesitter Shane Kormelink led 19 laps and finished in 5th. 2 caution flags flew. One caution was caused by a wreck which knocked out Newsday, C. Lemke, and Al Kaholic. The other caution flew for a one car accident which involved M. Allen. Al Kaholic now had 5 DNF's in 7 races.

With 10 laps left, pit stops for a splash of fuel were needed for all cars. A pack of 9, who had established themselves as the top before the stops battled it out in the pits and on the track after the stops. Nick Phillips and Bobby Mask stayed in the top 2 spots for most of the final laps. Mask took the white flag in first but heading down the backstretch Phillips took the spot from him and took the checkered.

126 lead changes took place over 160 laps. 1 caution flag flew for D. Wilson. Polesitter #37 M. Waddams led 8 laps and finished 13th.

Look for me to finish up the TCS series at Daytona today.

A major surprise winner in Race #9. #30 B. Cole who has had a horrible season thus far pulled off a major upset with the win in Race #9 of the TCS series at Daytona. His car looked strong all day and led 21 laps after starting 21st. 2nd place went to #37 M. Waddams who led the most laps with 28 after starting 32nd. Shane Kormelink, who came into the day 20 points back of leader T. Hudson lost a header while leading the race on lap 41. It went from being a day where it looked like he would take the points lead to one where he finished 42nd and dropped to 6th, 121 back of the leader with one race left. #58 T. Hudson had a horrible day and finished 37th. He is now 3rd in points. Jim Bender regains the points lead and has a 64 point lead over S. Silvers.

#51 Nick Phillips took the pole for this race, after he won the last one. He ran well and was up front almost all day. But in the last ten laps he began to fall back and finished in 20th.

118 lead changes among 27 drivers took place. 1 caution flag flew. Two drivers, Kormelink and #5 C. Lemke failed to finish with header problems. 34 drivers finished the race on the lead lap.

All day, eyes were glued to the cars of Jim Bender, Sterling Silvers, and T. Hudson. Bender moved up quickly from his 12th starting spot and took the lead for 2 laps. But, that was all he would lead. He fell back and ran between 15th and 35th for much of the day. This gave hope to both Silvers and Hudson. Silvers ran well, stayed in the top 10 for most of the race and was hoping Bender would stay in 25th and back. Bender didn't stay there though, with about 25 laps to go, Bender began to move. He moved his way through the field and got himself up to 3rd. The top two cars, Wade Moore and H. Gloss had distanced themselves from the field already. Silvers stayed in the top ten and Hudson raced in the top also. But with Silvers up there, Hudson's chances diminished greatly. After a few laps in the top 5, Bender fell back again. Heading into the last lap, Silvers still had a chance to win the title. He needed to move up from 7th and had to have Bender lose a few spots. Bender dropped from 20th to 22nd on the last lap but Silvers could not gain any spots and finished in 7th. Hudson finished 4th. Bender wins the title by 15 points. Meanwhile, Wade Moore salvages a terrible series at Daytona by winning the finale over H. Gloss.

10 races, 10 different winners. Craptacular won 2 poles. Bender and Long had the most Top 5's with 4. Bender, Silvers, and Hudson, 1, 2, and 3 in the points had the most Top 10's with 6. Al Kaholic had the most DNF's with 5. Every driver but #32 M. Allen led a lap. Ray Zerback led the most laps with 109. Silvers, Newsday and Zerback led a lap in every race. Bender completed all but one lap out of 1600.
